Symptoms of Gastric Ulceration in Foals and Horses
Causes of Gastric Ulceration in Foals and Horses
A horse's stomach produces approximately 1.5 litres of acidic fluid per hour. This acid is said to be neutralized by the alkalinity of a horse's saliva. However, saliva is only produced when the horse eats.
If the horse does not eat for long periods, the acid accumulates in the stomach and irritates the lining of the stomach, causing ulcers.
Also if the horse is made to exercise or train on an empty stomach, he is very likely to develop stomach ulcers.
Improper and irregular feeding routine
Long distance travels may sometimes be stressful for horses
Stress due to competitions may be another cause for gastric ulcers
Excessive drugs may cause the acid levels to shoot up giving rise to ulcers
Gastrogard 37% 14 Syringe of 6.15gms - Generic
