Will historians then record a continuingslide into the abyss of moral decay, or willthey tell about a nation that corrected itscourse and recovered its greatness? Thenext eight years will undoubtedly deter-mine what they will say. Is it possible fora nation that has hit the moral skids, asAmerica has, to find its way back to theprinciples that once made her great?Could we identify the forces that seem tobe sweeping us along and make a deter-mined decision to reverse them beforethey destroy us?

When the history of the UnitedStates of America is written 200years from now, what will be said

about the quantum shift in moral values thatoccurred between 1960 and 2008?Howwillhistorians explain the incredible moral flip-flop from a nation that outlawed homosex-ual acts from 1776 to 1960 to a nation thatoutlawed speaking against homosexualityjust 48 years later? Will they be able to ex-plain what happened?

The next eight years will undoubtedly de-termine what they will say. 1The final seven years will begin when the Antichristand the international community give their support

to Israel’s right to exist in the land promised to Abra-ham by God. This is called the confirmation of thecovenant (Daniel 9:27 & Genesis 15:18). Israel’s PrimeMinister has openly stated that the number one goal ofhis administration is to obtain the support of the inter-national community for Israel’s final borders. He hopesto achieve this by the end of 2008.

2A war will begin from the vicinity of the EuphratesRiver (Revelation 9:13-16). Most of the Eu-

phrates River is in Iraq. The United States has140,000 troops stationed along the Euphrates at thistime. The conflict between the U.S. and Islamic Fun-damentalism is not diminishing, but increasingaround the world.

3The West Bank (Judea) in Israel will become aplace of great tribulation (Matthew 24:15-21).

Ehud Olmert has openly said that he will withdrawfrom the West Bank (Judea) by the end of 2008. WhenIsrael withdraws, the Hamas terrorist state will takeover in Judea, precipitating a bloodbath.

4The Temple Mount in Jerusalem will be placedunder a sharing arrangement between Jew and

Gentile (Revelation 11:1-2). President Clinton sug-gested the sharing of the Temple Mount in July of2000. It is generally believed this is the only possiblesolution to the Temple Mount dispute whenever theissue is finally resolved.

5The Jewish temple will be built on the TempleMount (Revelation 11:1-2 & 2 Thessalonians

2:3-4). All the furniture for Israel’s Third Temple isnow complete; Israel has her long-sought-for redheifer, which is needed before the re-establishmentof temple worship; and in June of 2005, the newly re-born Sanhedrin announced they were proceeding withbuilding the temple.

6The Temple Mount will be placed under the su-pervision of the world community, and the leader

of the world community, which will at that time bethe Antichrist, will stand on the Temple Mount claim-ing to be God (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4). Ehud Barak,Israeli Prime Minister in the year 2000, suggestedplacing the Temple Mount under UN control in orderto make a sharing of the Temple Mount possible.When the UN takes control of the Temple Mount, theleader of the world government will feel justified inclaiming ultimate authority there.

7A world government will dominate the world forthree and one-half years prior to Armageddon

(Daniel 7:23 & Revelation 13:7). The nations of theworld are increasingly recognizing the authority of in-ternational law. We now have the World Bank, theWorld Trade Organization, the World Health Organi-zation and the World Court—just to name a few. Wehave a World Court to adjudicate the internationallaws of the emerging world government.

8Each person on earth will be required to have amark or a number in order to buy or sell (Reve-

lation 13:16-18). On May 11, 2005, President Bushsigned the Real ID Act. The law requires that everyAmerican must have a national ID card by May 11,2008. Without this card, a person will not be able tohold a job or open a bank account. Without a job ora bank account, how much buying and selling will anindividual be able to do? Oh, by the way, you can’tget your card without giving your number…your so-cial security number.

Ezekiel 38 & 39) Iran (Persia) and Russia(Meshech—root word for Moscovi or Moscow) arenow in alliance. Iran is the leading advocate of “wip-ing Israel off the map.” e

6th Trumpet WatchScientist to Congress: U.S. risks 'catastro-phe' in nuke EMP attackA top scientist has warned that America re-mains vulnerable to a "catastrophe" from anuclear electromagnetic pulse attack thatcould be launched by hostile rogue nationsor terrorists. William R. Graham, chairmanof the Commission to Assess the Threatfrom an (EMP) Attack, presented a new re-port on "one of a small number of threatsthat can hold our society at risk of cata-strophic consequences." An EMP attack ini-tiated by the detonation of a nuclearweapon at high altitude in the range of 25 to250miles over the middle of the continentalU.S. "has the capability to produce signifi-cant damage to critical infrastructures," saidGraham. Because of America's heavy re-liance on electricity and electronics, the im-pact would be far worse than on a countryless advanced.

Pentagon official warns of Israeli attack onIranSenior Pentagon officials are concerned thatIsrael could carry out an attack on Iran's nu-clear facilities before the end of the year. Asenior defense official said it is a move thatlikely would prompt Iranian retaliationagainst, not just Israel, but against theUnited States.

"Hostile" Iran sparks U.S. attack planA second American aircraft carrier steamedinto the Persian Gulf as the Pentagon or-dered military commanders to develop newoptions for attacking Iran. The planning isbeing driven by what one officer called the"increasingly hostile role" Iran is playing inIraq. According to a report in the AsiaTimes, the Bush administration plans tocarry out air strikes by August, and a Cali-fornia and Indiana senator were informed

and plan to voice their opposition to it in aNew York Times editorial. The plan is to befor a "limited" air strike aimedmore at send-ing a message than destroying Iran’s sup-posed nuclear program the report said.

U.S. diplomat says fear of Chinese missilebuildup encouraging pro-independence inTaiwanA second-ranking U.S. diplomat says hefears China's huge buildup of missiles is en-couraging Taiwan's pro-independence incli-nations. China has been adding more than100 missiles a year to the estimated 1,000 ithas targeting Taiwan. Hundreds of thou-sands of troops are based opposite Taiwan,and hundreds of planes are ready to makegood on China's threat to attack should theisland formalize its de-facto independence.

Indefensible spendingWhy is U.S. military spending at the highestpoint, in inflation-adjusted dollars, than atany time since the end of WorldWar II, asksRobert Scheer, who wrote a column for TheTimes, and is editor-in-chief of Truthdig.The 2009 defense budget commits theUnited States to spending more to defeat aragtag band of terrorists than it spent at theheight of the Cold War fighting the Sovietsuperpower. When pressed on why the mas-sive weapons arsenal we already possessisn't sufficient to keep the peace in a sud-denly unipolar world, defense hawks oftencite an emerging threat from China. China'smilitary is focused on assuring the capabil-ity to prevent Taiwan independence.

EU WatchPoland won’t block EU Treaty and Sarkozysays Ireland will have to vote againAfter indicating he would not sign the Lis-bon Treaty, Poland's president has pledgednot to block the treaty to reform the Euro-

pean Union. A newspaper had quoted Pol-ish President Lech Kaczynski as saying thatsigning the treaty would be "pointless" be-cause of the Irish no vote in June. ButFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy spoke byphone with Kaczynski who told the Frenchleader that Poland will not be "an obstacle"to the treaty's ratification. Sarkozy also saidthat Ireland will have to vote once more onthe treaty. His comments were downplayedbut not denied by the French government.At this point, 23 of the 27 member stateshave ratified the treaty.

Israel must share Jerusalem, Sarkozy tellsParliamentFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy told theIsraeli parliament that there could be noMiddle East peace unless Israel drops its re-fusal to cede sovereignty over parts ofJerusalem. Putting himself forward as a pos-sible peace broker, he also offered to mobi-lize French troops if necessary. He saidpeace with the Palestinians was possible ifIsrael, among other things, would acceptJerusalem as the capital of two states.

EU plans international embassiesThe European Union plans to open its ownembassies under a secret plan that criticsfear represents a "power grab" by Brusselsofficials pushing for a federal superstate. It’sthe first time that full EU embassies havebeen seriously discussed. The "Embassies ofthe Union" would be controlled by an EUdiplomatic service created by the LisbonTreaty.

Mark of the Beast WatchBiometric blooper?The U.K. is planning to launch a nationalbiometric identity card next year. The cardwill be convenient, but the whole idea maybe deeply flawed. According to a recent re-

Real ID deadline comes and goes with zerostates on boardThe original May 11 deadline for Real IDcompliance has come and gone, but not asingle state has implemented the program.The Real ID Act had been squeezed into a2005 military spending bill and passed withvirtually no discussion or debate in Con-gress. All 50 states have now been grantedextensions from the Department of Home-land Security.

Rep. Guest stares down a threatMissouri Rep. JimGuest fears Real ID couldlead to a national ID card that could becompromised and threaten the user’s pri-vacy. Rep. Guest wants his state to opt outfrom complying with the Real ID Act. TheMissouri House had passed the measure,but the effort languished in their Senate.Recently the state received a $17 millionfederal grant to develop and test a verifica-tion process for implementing Real ID.

VeriChip going away?Just three weeks after VeriChip launched itsHealthlink ad campaign, the company soldits Canadian unit, Xmark, and put itself onthe block. An executive said it couldn’tstand the “cash burn” of consumer market-ing. VeriChip had been hard-pressed by crit-ics like CASPIAN, which recently releaseda report linking the chips with cancerous tu-mors.

RBS issues global stock and credit crashalertThe Royal Bank of Scotland has advisedclients to brace for a full-fledged crash inglobal stock and credit markets. Inflation isparalyzing major central banks, and a very

nasty period is soon to be upon us accord-ing to Bob Janjuah, the bank's credit strate-gist. "Globalization was always going to riskputting G7 bankers into a dangerous cornerat some point. We have got to that point,"he said. "The Fed is in panic mode.”

Cell phone users secretly tracked in studyResearchers secretly tracked the locationsof 100,000 people outside the United Statesthrough their cell phones. This first-of-its-kind study by Northeastern Universityraises privacy and ethical questions for itsmonitoring methods. Researchers used cellphone towers to track individuals' locationswhenever they made or received phone callsand text messages. The scientists would notdisclose where the study was done; only de-scribing the location as an industrialized na-tion.

Bush signs bill to take all newborns’ DNAPresident Bush signed into law a bill whichwill see the federal government screen theDNA of all newborn babies in the U.S. Crit-ics have described it as the first step to-wards the establishment of a national DNAdatabase. The new law S. 1858, known asThe Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of2007, is meant to represent preparation forany sort of "public health emergency." Sec-tions of the bill make it clear that DNAmaybe used in genetic experiments and tests.

Middle East WatchOlmert: Peace deal has 'never been as close'as nowAccording to Israel's prime minister, aMideast peace deal has never been closer tofruition. "I think we have never been asclose to the possibility of reaching an agree-ment as we are today," Olmert said in a jointnews conference. Israel and the PalestinianAuthority have begun to negotiate issues"that will take us finally to a point at whichwe have never been before."

Third Temple preparations begin withpriestly garbThe Temple Institute has started preparing

to build a Third Temple on Jerusalem'sMount Moriah, the site of the Dome of theRock and the Al Aqsa mosque, by inaugu-rating a workshop that manufacturespriestly garments. Priestly garments havenot been worn since the destruction of theSecond Temple by Rome in 70 AD. Whenthe Temple is rebuilt, the proper outfit mustbe worn in order to perform the duties inthe Temple.

'Olmert met with Osirak attack planner'The New York Times broke a story aboutwhat it claimed was a massive Israeli AirForce drill to simulate an attack in Iran. Onthe same day, Prime Minister Ehud Olmertmet with Colonel Aviam Sela. Sela was thebrains behind "Operation Opera," which,when carried out in 1981, resulted in the de-struction of the Osirak nuclear reactor inIraq. The report speculates that Olmert in-vited Sela to the meeting to hear from thecolonel his thoughts about the chances thatIsrael would succeed in attacking Iran.

Qurei says Israel, PA to start drafting peaceproposalIsraeli and Palestinian negotiators haveagreed to start drafting elements of a peaceaccord. Ahmed Qurei made it clear that thedecision did not necessarily reflect agree-ment on major issues, but this would be thefirst time since negotiations resumed thatanything would be committed to paper.

Bush links optimism for Mideast reform todemocratic IsraelPresident Bush said that 60 years of Israel'sexistence is cause for optimism for demo-cratic change throughout the Middle East."The objective of the United States must beto support our strongest ally and friend inthe Middle East”, Bush said. The Presidenthas expressed confidence that an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement would bestruck before his term in office ends. e

Reply: Revelation 12:7-9 depicts Satan asan angel: “And there was war in heaven:Michael and his angels fought against thedragon; and the dragon fought and his an-gels, And prevailed not; neither was theirplace found any more in heaven. And thegreat dragon was cast out, that old serpent,called the devil, and Satan, which deceiveththe whole world: he was cast out into theearth, and his angels were cast out withhim.” II Corinthians 11:14 also refers tohim as an angel: “And no marvel; for Satanhimself is transformed into an angel oflight.”

Q: Not much has been said about what weare supposed to do in order to survive eco-nomically and in other ways during thegreat tribulation. What can we do to protect

ourselves if we are not going to follow theAntichrist?

Reply: Jesus told us in Matthew 6:25,“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thoughtfor your life, what ye shall eat, or what yeshall drink; nor yet for your body, what yeshall put on. Is not the life more than meat,and the body than raiment?” Verse 33 says,“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, andhis righteousness; and all these things shallbe added unto you.” What a promise! If weput God first, everything else will be takencare of. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’ttake prudent steps, as we are able, to pre-pare for what is coming. There is quite amovement being formed right now to createa barter system among Christians. PerhapsGod will use something like this to care forHis people during the time of the greattribulation. I’m sure God will guide us if wewalk close to Him and are led by His spirit.

Since the great tribulation will be tied toeconomic control, we would all be wise toeliminate as much financial debt as possi-ble. Too much debt contributes towardundue stress, which can hinder our abilityto do God’s work. This is so important sincethis time will be our last opportunity toreach the world for Jesus Christ before it istoo late. Since we know there is a nuclearwar coming, we should lay up supplies tosurvive that war (See our article on “Sur-viving World War III” atwww.endtime.com). And don’t forget, thesame God that fed 2 million Israelites forforty years in the wilderness can certainlyprovide for us during the three and one-halfyear great tribulation. We should also prayfor and talk to our governmental represen-tatives about repealing the Real ID Act anddisentangling from the world governmentthat is now being formed.

LETTERS & FEEDBACKThe followers of Mormonism claim that the book of Mormon was written on golden plates be-

tween 600 BC and 400 AD. They claim that Joseph Smith translated the golden plates into Eng-

lish with the help of an angel in 1830 AD. However, this claim cannot possibly be true because

entire chapters of the Book of Mormon were copied word for word out of the King James Bible.

The King James Bible did not exist until 1611 AD, 1200 years after the golden plates were sup-

posedly completed in 400 AD. Yet the King James Bible was published over 200 years before

Joseph Smith supposedly translated the Book of Mormon. There is only one explanation. John

Smith wrote the Book of Mormon and copied whole chapters from the King James Bible. Smith

also quoted from the works of William Shakespeare, who died in 1616 AD.

Q: My supervisor asked me to provide mydriver's license and submit to being pho-tographed and fingerprinted. She said thatfrom this I would get an ID card (containinga chip) that would grant me access to gov-ernment buildings (I work for the govern-ment and am told that the President orderedall federal employees to do the same). I getnervous anytime someone starts talkingabout microchips. This isn't the mark of thebeast, is it? Is it possible for Christians tobe tricked into to taking it? Or will weknow without a doubt that we are signing

up for (or refusing) the mark? At whatpoint should I say no to such requests?

Reply: This is not yet the mark of the beastbecause the Bible says people will have to‘worship the beast’ in order to get theirmark or number. Obviously, people can’tworship the beast if he is not here yet.That being said, what is happening at yourworkplace is happening all over the worldright now. Preparations are being made forthe implementation of the mark of thebeast. We should never take a loyalty oath toa man or a world government system. Fur-thermore, if the phrase ‘under God’ is evereliminated from the pledge of allegiance, weshould not take that either. I will never takea mark or number on my body or injectedunder my skin. I would die first.Your concern is legitimate. We all must becareful and watchful as we move forward.I’m sure God will give us the insight weneed in the troubled times that are justahead.

Q: Irvin, this is an English speaking nation,not Spanish. Why are you adding Spanishto your DVD’s?

—I don’t like that, Mr. Weller

Reply: There are more than 40 millionSpanish speaking people in the UnitedStates who need the Gospel as much as us.In addition, Endtime materials are not lim-ited to the United States; they are viewed bypeople all over the world, and Spanish isone of the world’s main languages. The goalof Endtime Ministries is to “teach all na-tions…” as Jesus commanded. Like Him,we are not willing that any should perish,but that all come to repentance (2Peter 3:9).

Q: I'm watching a set of Endtime DVD’s,which I have enjoyed. Why is it a big dealthat Turkey can dry up the river? The con-text of the Euphrates River drying up is to-tally supernatural. Every other bowl

judgment is supernatural in its ability orhappening. It seems out of context to saythat in the middle of supernatural events,some natural event (the river under Turkey'scontrol) is the fulfillment of this. Did Goduse a nation to dry up the Red Sea or JordanRiver? No. The same has to happen here.It's a supernatural drying up if taken in con-text. —Thank you, Doug

Reply: There are many instances in scrip-ture in which people have been involvedwith prophetic fulfillments. The bombingsof Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the sinkingof one-third of ships duringWWII was a ful-fillment of the second trumpet of Revela-tion. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster was afulfillment of the third trumpet. The in-volvement of man does not reduce the su-pernatural value of prophecy.

Also in 2008, Colorado made it a crimeto even speak against homosexuality (ex-cept in church), and California outlawedusing words in school classrooms, such ashusband and wife or mother and father, be-cause they might seem discriminatoryagainst children in “nontraditional house-holds.” Have we lost our minds?!

What caused this total reversal in moralstandards?What in the world happened in the forty-eight years between 1960 and 2008 tobring about this radical flip-flop in Amer-ica’s moral values?

We must first understand that Americanlaw was originally based on biblical princi-ples by our founding fathers. The preambleof our Declaration of Independence de-clares that we are endowed by our Creatorwith certain inalienable rights. It followsthat, if we ever cease to acknowledge the

supremacy of that Creator, we will lose ourclaim to these inalienable rights—rightsthat the government didn’t give and conse-quently has no right to take away. DenyingGod’s authority over our government willthus result in the crumbling of the entirebasis for America’s government “of thepeople, by the people and for the people.”Only when people are governed by thehigher principles of God can they escapethe intrusive heavy hand of secular govern-ment. That’s the reason the words “underGod” are absolutely critical in our pledgeof allegiance.

Our founding fathers understood this.Consequently, they reflected their rever-ence for God by basing the entirety ofAmerican law on the teachings of thatGod— as expressed in the Bible.

This is where some opponents of therecognition of God in public life object.They say to recognize the authority ofscripture is to recognize one God above an-other—and they are right! A God unde-fined and unnamed is no God at all, and isrendered totally powerless and irrelevant.Unless we as Americans stop apologizingfor our Christian foundations and beginreaffirming them, those foundations aresure to crumble, which in fact is happeningright now.

The original thirteen colonies reflectedthis respect for biblical principles by enact-

ing laws against homosexual acts. Severalof the colonies actually referred to theBible’s teaching on homosexuality inLeviticus 20:13 when adopting their anti-sodomy laws. These anti-sodomy laws con-tinued to be embraced by all fifty states ofthe U.S. until 1960.

Were our founding fathers wrong for184 years, or are we wrong now?

•1962: The U.S. Supreme Court ruledthat prayer in schools was unconstitu-tional. This was more than a ruling aboutprayer in the schools. It was the officialstamp for the removal of God from everyarea of American public life. It was the de-cision to deny the authority of God overthe government of the United States.

Forces for morality fight back•1996: In an attempt to counter the con-tinuing attack on marriage and traditionalmorality, the Defense of Marriage Act(DOMA) was overwhelmingly passed bythe U.S. Senate (85-14 and by the Houseof Representatives (342-67). It was thensigned into law by President Bill Clinton.

The Defense of Marriage Act states thefollowing:

No state (or other political subdivisionwithin the United States) need treat a rela-tionship between persons of the same sexas a marriage, even if the relationship isconsidered a marriage in another state.

The Federal Government may not treatsame-sex relationships as marriages for anypurpose, even if concluded or recognizedby one of the states.

•2004: Backlash against same-sex mar-riage begins.

Thirteen states pass constitutionalamendments prohibiting same-sex mar-riage—Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky,Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Mis-souri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma,Ohio, Oregon, and Utah. Most of the con-stitutional amendments passed by largemargins.

•2007: By 2007, forty-five states hadpassed laws banning same-sex marriage.Twenty-seven of those states had definedmarriage in their constitutions. Only fivestates were without laws prohibiting same-sex marriage—Massachusetts, New Jersey,NewMexico, New York, and Rhode Island.

The cancer continuesEven though forty-five states passed lawsbanning same-sex marriage, the cancer of

moral perversion continued to eat away atthe fabric of American society.

On October 12, 2007, California passeda bill requiring California public schools topositively portray homosexuality. SB777effectively banned using the terms “Momand Dad” and “husband and wife” in theclassroom. It also granted the right forboys to use girls’ restrooms and lockerrooms, and vice versa, if they choose.

It banned anything being said or studiedthat could be “interpreted” as negative to-ward homosexuality, bisexuality or trans-gender lifestyles. In practice, SB777 willrequire indoctrination to accept alternativelifestyles. Any materials that portray mar-riage as only between a man and womanwill be illegal. Homecoming kings will beable to be male or female, as can home-coming queens. What a mess!

Once this radical law was adopted bythe California legislature and signed byGovernor Schwarzeneggar, it became onlya matter of time until the other shoe ofsame-sex marriage dropped.

Back in 2000, the people of Californiaforesaw the direction that the homosexualagenda would try to take them. Conse-quently, they banned same-sex marriage byvoter referendum. However, since the ref-erendum did not make same-sex marriageunconstitutional, the law was left to themercy of California’s elitist, ‘legislate fromthe bench’ judges.

California courts legalize same-sex mar-riageOn May 15, 2008, the California SupremeCourt, by a vote of 4-3, struck down thestate's ban on same-sex marriage in abroadly worded decision that invalidatedvirtually any law that discriminates on thebasis of sexual orientation. After the oblig-atory thirty-day waiting period, homosex-ual couples lined up to be married.

However, the battle in California is farfrom over. When the court ruling over-turned the will of the California voters, theopposition immediately swung into action.Nearly twice the signatures required to puta constitutional amendment prohibitingsame-sex marriage on November’s ballotwere obtained. If the voters approve theconstitutional amendment in November,the issue will be placed beyond the reachof California’s activist judges and its pro-homosexual lawmakers.


Colorado adopts transgender billOn May 29, 2008, Colorado adoptedSB200, a law adding sexual orientation toits anti-discrimination laws. This new lawforbids speaking or publishing against anysexual orientation, including homosexuals,bi-sexuals and transgender persons. It for-bids denying services because of sexual ori-entation.

This would mean a photographer couldbe forced to perform photography for asame-sex wedding, even if it were againstthe person’s religious beliefs. A printercould be forced to print promotional mate-rial for homosexual events. The possiblescenarios are endless. Some people eventhink SB200 could forbid the selling or dis-tribution of the Bible because of its strongteaching against homosexuality.

The law also appears to allow men whoself-identify as “transgender” a legal rightto use women’s bathrooms, health clubshowers, bath-houses, and any other “pub-lic accommodation”.

A person in violation of the provisionsof SB200 is guilty of a misdemeanor, andupon conviction shall be punished by a fineof up to three hundred dollars or by notmore than one year in prison, or by bothfine and imprisonment.

U.S. House of Representatives forms ho-mosexual caucusHomosexuals are in the extreme minorityin America, but they make so much noisethat it seems like they represent the major-ity. Two openly homosexual members ofthe U.S. House of Representatives, De-mocrats Barney Frank of Massachusettsand Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, are theonly open homosexuals presently in Con-gress. In June, they joined with Republi-cans Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida andChristopher Shays of Connecticut, alongwith 50 other Democrats to create theHouse Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Trans-gender Caucus.

It is astounding that a caucus has nowbeen formed in our Congress explicitly forthe purpose of promoting the cause of per-version in America!

Arizona puts marriage amendment on No-vember ballotIn the midst of the flurry of activity by gayactivists, those who understand that thesurvival of America depends on defeating

the purveyors of perversion continue tofight. The Arizona Senate voted 16-4 toplace a constitutional amendment againstsame-sex marriage on the ballot in Novem-ber. Arizona law already prohibits same-sex marriage, but, without a constitutionalamendment, that could be struck down atany time.

If the constitutional amendment is ap-proved, Arizona will become the twenty-eighth state to declare same-sex marriagesunconstitutional.

Gay assault on the BibleIf homosexuality is OK, the Bible is falseand should be thrown in the trash. If theBible is true, homosexuality is pervertedand wrong. When schools teach that ho-mosexual lifestyles are normal and accept-able, they are teaching that the Bible is nottrue! Speaking of government making nolaws concerning the establishment of reli-gion or the free exercise thereof!

Government is ruling against the Biblewhen it mandates the teaching of respectfor homosexuality, which the Bible lists asvile and against nature.

Some promoters of the gay agenda havedisputed that the Bible condemns homo-sexuality. As a nation whose founding wasbased on the Bible, every Americanshould, at least, know what the Bible actu-ally says about homosexuality.

What does the Bible say?In the first chapter of Genesis, the firstbook of the Bible, we are told that Godmade man male and female. And God saidthat it was very good.

God so wanted the distinction betweenthe sexes to be maintained that inDeuteronomy 22:5, He mandated:

“The woman shall not wear that whichpertaineth unto a man, neither shall a manput on a woman’s garment: for all that doso are abomination unto the LORD thyGod.” God indicated that cross-dressing orthe confusion in the roles of male and fe-male in any form was an abomination toHim.

In the second chapter of Genesis, verse24, God instituted marriage. He said,“Therefore shall a man leave his father andhis mother, and shall cleave unto his wife:and they shall be one flesh.” God made ab-solutely no provision for marriage betweentwo women or between two men.

Not only did God not mention same-sexmarriage, but He strictly forbid it in Leviti-cus 20:13: “If a man also lie with mankind,as he lieth with a woman, both of themhave committed an abomination: they shallsurely be put to death; their blood shall beupon them.”

Notice that God did not refer to homo-sexuality as a sexual preference or as an al-ternative lifestyle. He declared it anabomination!

SodomyThe first reference to sodomy in scriptureis contained in the reference to the destruc-tion of Sodom and Gomorrah by God inGenesis 13:13: “But the men of Sodomwere wicked and sinners before the LORDexceedingly.”

When two angels in the form of menwent down to Sodom to rescue Lot fromthe coming destruction, the men of Sodomattempted to have homosexual relationswith them (Genesis 19:4-5). God rainedfire and brimstone on the inhabitants ofSodom because of their extreme moral de-pravity. From this time on, the sin of ho-mosexuality became known as sodomy.

Two thousand years later in the NewTestament, the sin of Sodom was still beingcited as an example of God’s hatred ofmoral perversion. The passage is Jude,verse 7: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah,and the cities about them in like manner,giving themselves over to fornication, andgoing after strange flesh, are set forth foran example, suffering the vengeance ofeternal fire.”

God hadn’t changed in 2,000 years, andHe hasn’t changed now!

New Testament teaching onhomosexualityThe Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthiansexplicitly describing those who would notbe saved: “Do you not know that the un-righteous will not inherit the kingdom ofGod? Do not be deceived. Neither fornica-tors, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor ho-mosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, norcovetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, norextortioners will inherit the kingdom ofGod. And such were some of you. But youwere washed, but you were sanctified, butyou were justified in the name of the LordJesus and by the Spirit of our God (1Corinthians 6:9-11 NKJV).


While warning us not to be deceivedinto believing that people living immorallifestyles will be saved, Paul also held outhope for all people. He said, “And suchwere some of you.” He plainly said thatsinful lifestyles can be left behind by thesalvation provided by Jesus Christ.

This also disputes the lie that “once anadulterer, always an adulterer,” or “once ahomosexual always a homosexual.”Through being born again, we become newcreatures. As the scripture says, “Oldthings are passed away; behold, all thingsbecome new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The Bible tells us why people becomehomosexualIn spite of being repeated over and over bythe promoters of gay propaganda, there isno valid proof that homosexuals are ‘bornthat way.’

Furthermore, God tells us in Romans1:21-28 why people become homosexual:

“Because that, when they knew God,they glorified him not as God, neither werethankful; but became vain in their imagi-nations, and their foolish heart was dark-ened… Wherefore God also gave them upto uncleanness through the lusts of theirown hearts, to dishonor their own bodiesbetween themselves: Who changed thetruth of God into a lie, and worshiped andserved the creature more than the Creator,who is blessed for ever… For this causeGod gave them up unto vile affections: foreven their women did change the naturaluse into that which is against nature: Andlikewise also the men, leaving the naturaluse of the woman, burned in their lust onetoward another; men with men workingthat which is unseemly, and receiving inthemselves that recompense of their errorwhich was meet. And even as they did notlike to retain God in their knowledge, Godgave them over to a reprobate mind, to dothose things which are not convenient.”

Not one scripture condoneshomosexualityEvery scripture that refers to homosexual-ity, in both the Old and New Testaments,condemns it in the strongest terms. Notone scripture endorses it. Not one!

To contend for any other position is bla-tant dishonesty and utter disregard for thetruth. To justify homosexuality is to re-nounce the Bible.

Will America become a sodomite nation?The promoters of the gay agenda boldlyclaim that the total acceptance of same-sexmarriage in America is inevitable. It’s only amatter of time, they say.

Is it inevitable? If left up to the politi-cians, it probably is inevitable. Most all ofthem hold their finger up to the politicalwinds and then try to go the way they per-ceive the wind to be blowing. It appears thatfew of them really take the obvious teach-ings of scripture seriously, even thoughmost of them boldly claim to be Christians.

President Bill ClintonIt was shocking when President Clintonsigned the Defense of Marriage Act andthen sent a video to Elton John congratulat-ing him on his upcoming homosexual ‘mar-riage’. In the video Clinton said, “If therewere more people in the world like Elton,then the world would be a better place."

Prime Minister Tony BlairBritish Prime Minister Tony Blair men-tioned Elton John and his partner at a newsconference. He wished them well and con-gratulated them, adding, “and to all theother people exercising their rights underthe civil partnership law, I think it’s a mod-ern, progressive step for the country, andI’m glad we did it.”

Condoleezza RicePresident Bush appointed Mark Dybul, anopenly homosexual person, to be globalAIDS ambassador. Secretary of State Con-doleezza Rice presided over the swearing-inceremony, with Jason Claire, Dybul’s malepartner holding the Bible on which Dybulplaced his right hand. According to theState Department transcript, Rice said: “Iam truly honored and delighted to have theopportunity to swear in Mark Dybul as ournext Global AIDS Coordinator. I ampleased to do that in the presence of Mark'sparents, Claire and Richard; his partner,Jason; and his mother-in-law, Marilyn. Youhave wonderful family to support you,Mark, and I know that's always importantto us. Welcome.”

The reference by Rice to Dybul’s part-ner’s mother as Dybul’s mother-in-law wassickening to those Americans who still be-lieve that homosexuality is an abomination.

Adding insult to injury was the fact thatFirst Lady Laura Bush participated in the

same-sex ceremony.

Barack ObamaEither Barack Obama or John McCain willsoon become the 44th president of theUnited States. Whoever wins the electionwill exercise great influence over the moraldirection of America during the next fourto eight years.

Barack Obama has claimed to favorsame-sex civil unions, but not same-sexmarriages. Either stance is abhorrent toscripture and an abomination to God.

In a letter to the Lesbian Gay Bi-sexualTransgender (LGBT) Democratic Club,Obama disclosed what he really believes.

He stated his support for extending fullyequal rights and benefits to same-sex cou-ples under both state and federal law. Heaffirmed his support of repealing the De-fense of Marriage Act and the military’s“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy, as well asthe passage of laws including sexual orien-tation in hate crime laws and employmentdiscrimination.

Obama also stated his opposition to theCalifornia Constitutional Amendment thatwould eliminate same-sex marriage and toany amendment to the U.S. Constitutionthat would make same-sex marriage un-constitutional.

So much for his professed stanceagainst same-sex marriage! That claimedposition is obviously for political posturingonly.

Obama concluded his letter to LGBTthis way: “Finally, I want to congratulateall of you who have shown your love foreach other by getting married these lastfew weeks.”

John McCainJohnMcCain has consistently stood againstsame-sex marriage, but he has been some-what evasive on the subject of civil unions.Sometimes he seems to be against them.Other times he appears to allow them. Helikes to say that he believes people shouldbe allowed to establish contractual agree-ments such as powers of attorney.

McCain spoke against and voted againstthe same-sex constitutional amendmentwhen it came before the U.S. Senate. He ex-plained that he did this because he is a fed-eralist and believes the power to regulate


marriage belongs to the states, not the fed-eral government.

Can America regain her greatness?More than 100 years ago, Alexis de Toc-queville, a famous French political philoso-pher who authored the now famousDemocracy in America, visited our nationto uncover the secret of our greatness. Hetraveled from town to town, talking withpeople, asking questions, examining everyfacet of our society.

Returning to France, he wrote theseamazing words, “I sought for America’sgreatness. I found it not in her fields andforests. I found it not in her mines and fac-tories. I found it not in her Congress andgreat tribunals.”

“It was only when I entered her churchesand heard her pulpits thundering against sinand preaching righteousness that I discov-ered the secret of her greatness.” Then headded, “America is great because Americais good. If America ever ceases to be good,America will cease to be great.”

De Tocqueville’s conclusion agrees withthe Bible. Proverbs 14:34 says that, “Right-eousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a re-proach to any people.”

Where is hope?Will America follow the path of the RomanEmpire, decaying and finally collapsingfrom within? Or can America pull backfrom the brink of total moral collapse, redis-covering those principles that originallymade America the greatest nation on earth?

There is precedent in history for a nationto recover after teetering on the brink ofspiritual bankruptcy. When revolution wassweeping through Europe in the late 18thcentury, the same societal conditions thatgave birth to the French Revolution werecoursing through Great Britain.

Morally, the country was becoming in-creasingly decadent. Drunkenness was ram-pant; gambling was so extensive that onehistorian described England as one vastcasino. Bishop Berkeley wrote that moralityand religion in Britain had collapsed to a de-gree that was never known in any Christiancountry.

It was in this atmosphere that GeorgeWhitfield and John Wesley began to preachin the streets of England. Their red-hotpreaching ignited the dry thirsty hearts ofthe people.

The ensuing revival cut across denomi-national lines and touched every class of so-ciety. England itself was transformed by therevival. In 1928 Archbishop Davidsonwrote that "Wesley practically changed theoutlook and even the character of the Eng-lish nation."

Some historians have maintained thatthe revival so altered the course of Englishhistory that it probably saved England fromthe kind of revolution that took place inFrance.

Could it happen in America?If spiritual revival could come to Englandat the time of its worst moral depravity,surely it could happen in the United States.

All is not lost! While two states haveembraced same-sex marriage, forty-eighthave not. We should not believe the gaypropaganda that says a Sodom-embracingAmerica is inevitable. It is not! We can winthis battle against the floodtide of moraldecay. And we must!

By now it is obvious that the neededspiritual leadership will not come from ourpolitical leaders. Where then can we lookfor leadership?

De Tocqueville was right when he saidthe thing that made America great was thefact that Americans lived lives of right-eousness. He was also right when he cred-ited the right living of the American peopleto the preachers that filled America’s pul-pits. When he heard these men of prayer asthey preached the scriptures without fearor favor, he understood the power of thegospel of Jesus Christ to transform peo-ple’s lives and even the moral culture of anentire nation.

Are there any true men of God left? Arethey all just trying to produce the biggestcongregations? Are there any left that arenot for sale who will preach the wholeBible, even if it cost them their lives?

If there are any out there, it’s time tostand up now! Tomorrow will be too late. Ifscripture declares that the liar and theadulterer will not inherent the kingdom ofGod, then preach it! If the Bible says thathomosexuality is an abomination in thesight of God, then preach it!

Preachers, you are America’s only hope.Pray your hearts hot! Preach with convic-tion and compassion! The people that lovethe truth are longing to hear it. They are sodisillusioned with rampant religious prosti-

tution!I know that some don’t want to hear.

But the ones that matter—the ones wholove the truth—are starving for true menof God that will set the trumpet to theirlips.

When the final history of America iswritten, will it record the destruction of apeople that did not like to retain God intheir knowledge? Will it speak of a peoplethat apologized for acknowledging Godand making Him the center of our nation?Or will our history tell about the spiritualawakening that swept the “One nation,under God.” Will it tell of the nation thatrefused to remove “In God We Trust” fromits money? Will it speak of a nation thatwas willing to speak the truth in love?Sodomy was wrong in the Old Testament.It was wrong in the New Testament. Andit is wrong in the 21st century.

The answerFrom what source should a society deriveits standards of morality? Can the future ofa nation be entrusted to the latest moralstandards being promoted by Hollywood?Should a nation’s standards be based onthe ever-shifting moral values of the peoplemaking up that society?

Or do these moral determinations comefrom God? And if so, which God? If theanswer is the God of the Bible, then wehave a guide for moral behavior—as ourfounding fathers believed. If not, we haveno solid standard, and consequently we areadrift on the ever-shifting waves of publicopinion—as we presently find ourselves.

Our only answer is a genuine spiritualrevival. When America embraces the Bibleas the word of God once again, homosex-uality will recede as fast as it has risen.

EarthquakesA Sign of the End?

It was a pleasant spring night in theheart of Silicon Valley, 1986, duringthe Reagan years and within a few

months of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.At the age of 15, I had been readingMatthew 24 prior to retiring for some shut

eye. A particular verse struck me, whereJesus said that in the last days there wouldbe “earthquakes in divers (various)places.” Being a new Christian, this reallystruck home with me because I was bornand raised in the heart of earthquake terri-

tory. Tremors were common, but most ofthem were mild and could not be felt. Oc-casionally, however, we would get a quakethat shook homes, sloshed swimmingpools, rattled china cabinets (my mother’sactually tipped over once, and believe it or

not, only one piece of china broke!), andeven caused sidewalks to mildly wave.Even less common, yet burned in theminds of every Bay Area citizen, were thedeadly ones, like the 1989 World SeriesQuake, which caused portions of the upperdecks of both I-880 and the Bay Bridge tocollapse, killing 67 people. We lived withthe continual thought, “Could the big jolthit today?”

As I pondered Jesus’ words that night, Ibegan to pray. After drifting off to sleep, Iwas suddenly awakened at 4AM by a dis-tinct voice, “Let this be a message fromGod.” Recognizing this to be the voice ofan angel (I had never heard the voice of anangel before, and to my knowledge, I havenot heard one since), I immediately sat upin bed and saw the time. “What on eartham I doing awake at 4AM?” I wondered.As I sat there thinking about what thevoice said and surprised that I had actuallyheard it, my room was quiet and peaceful.After about 20 seconds of calm silence,without warning, one of the largest earth-quakes we had experienced in a long timesuddenly hit. The entire house shook asthough King Kong was at play. I remem-bered Jesus’ words that I had read severalhours earlier, “…earthquakes in diversplaces.” He now had my full attention,and I knew, without question, the purposeof the angel’s voice. He had been sent byGod to wake me up; both literally and spir-itually, to a brand new understanding ofGod’s plan for shaking the earth.

As with most earthquakes, thingscalmed down within thirty seconds. How-ever, the memory of those brief momentshas stuck with me for twenty-two years. Itwasn’t the tremor. It was knowing that Ihad just heard the supernatural voice of anangel. What was the Lord up to? Matthew24 began to take on special meaning forme. It was like He was sending me a clearmessage that I was being born again in thelast days for a purpose. He was showingme that His plan for my life would involvehelping others get ready for His secondcoming.

Proof in the puddingEarthquakes strike suddenly—withoutwarning. We were all recently awakened onMay 12, 2008, by the horrific magnitude 8quake that shook Beichuan, China, leavingover 69 thousand people dead. One fatal-

ity is bad enough….but imagine enoughpeople to make a small city, all wiped outwithin a matter of seconds! It was so po-tent that it actually caused a lake to form,“Tangjiashan Quake Lake.”

According to Physorg.com, “Roughly 8million people have died globally as a resultof building collapses during earthquakes inthe past 1,000 years.”

The severity of earthquakes can beamazing. On December 26, 2004, the 9.3magnitude Indian Ocean quake off thecoast of Sumatra, Indonesia did some in-credible things:

• The shift of mass altered the Earth'srotation slightly and temporarily shortenedthe length of a day by 2.68 microseconds.

• As the second largest earthquake everrecorded on a seismograph, it had thelongest duration of faulting ever observed,between 8 and 10 minutes.

• It caused the entire planet to vibrateas much as 1 cm (0.5 inches), triggeredother earthquakes as far away as Alaska,and launched a deadly tsunami.

In response to Jesus’ words, skepticsoften argue, “Yes, but there have alwaysbeen earthquakes.” However, Jesus didnot say that earthquakes would be exclu-sive to the endtime generation. Rather, hemerely pointed out that they would be inmany places. He implied they would be onthe increase quantitatively and geographi-cally.

United States exempt?It is easy to hear about an earthquakestriking overseas, some 2 or 3 thousandmiles away and relegate it to “just anotherthird world thing.” We sometimes havebeen lulled into thinking that the UnitedStates is exempt from such a natural disas-ter. However, according to the UnitedStates Geological Survey (USGS), “earth-quakes pose significant risk to 75 millionAmericans in 39 states.”

A key U.S. city, Los Angeles, has beenon the alert, waiting for the “big one” tohit. A quote from the Los Angeles Timesleaves little comfort for the loyal SouthernCalifornia resident:

“An earthquake with a magnitude simi-lar to the one that recently rocked China isinevitable in Southern California andcould cause about 2,000 deaths, injuries to50,000 and $200 billion in damage if ithappened today, the U.S. Geological Sur-vey and the California Geological Surveywarn in a new report.

Scientists have examined the effects of ahypothetical 7.8-magnitude earthquakealong the San Andreas Fault. "The ques-tion is not if, but when Southern Californiawill be hit by a major earthquake -- one sodamaging that it will permanently changelives and livelihoods in the region."

Major freeways and rail lines would besevered. The fault crosses such major ar-teries as interstates 10 and 15.

“We are simply not ready for it," saidSue Perry, a U.S. Geological Survey staffscientist who contributed to the report."An earthquake of that size could be theKatrina of Southern California."”

Prophecy of future quakes?Revelation 11:13 speaks specifically abouta major earthquake which will take placein Israel during the battle of Armageddon.In verse 12 we see the two witnesses beingresurrected from the dead, which mostlikely is also the catching away (rapture) ofthe church. Within the same hour, a greatearthquake strikes. This destroys one-tenth of Jerusalem and kills seven thou-sand people. Correlating with this sametime in Revelation 18, Rome is also de-stroyed. Could it be that the same earth-quake which does so much damage inIsrael will also be the very thing which flat-tens Rome? This sequence of eventsmakes prophetic sense. Imagine a quakeso powerful that its force will extend 1,500miles northwest from Jerusalem to Rome!

Sobering is the fact that current indica-tors are pointing toward the prophecy’seventual fulfillment. According to Haaretznews in Israel, seven earthquakes recentlyshook northern Israel within two days.Correspondent Zafrir Rinat reflected on amajor earthquake which struck the area in1927. “It had a magnitude of more than 6and killed 500 people. Israeli experts saythat, because of population growth andhigh-rise construction, an earthquake ofthe same magnitude today would kill morethan 18,000 people.”

Israeli business daily Globes recentlystated, “Minister of National Infrastruc-tures Benjamin Ben-Eliezer has warnedthat the recent seismic activity in Lebanoncould be a signal that Israel is about to behit by a devastating earthquake. The seis-mic history of South Lebanon is similar tothe earthquake in 1956 which registered 6on the Richter scale, and which caused 160fatalities and damage to 6,000 buildings,”said Ben-Eliezer, adding that until 2008,seismic activity in the region was minimal,and that since February 15, SouthLebanon had been hit by more than 500tremors in three waves.”

Last days increaseEvidence shows that the idea of an in-crease in earthquake activity is not justspeculation on the part of prophecy teach-ers. According to the science websitePhysorg.com: Earthquake expert and geo-logical sciences Professor Roger Bilham ofthe University of Colorado at Boulder says,“Unprecedented human fatalities fromearthquakes will occur around the globeunless significant earthquake-resistant

building codes are implemented.”What major factors contribute to an in-

crease in fatalities? Professor Bilhampointed out that in 1950 there were 43“super-cities” worldwide with populationsfrom 2 million to over 15 million, however,today there are close to 200 super-cities.Between the 17th and 20th centuries, therewas a four-fold increase in the annualdeath toll from earthquakes. The majorcontributing factor is the enormous growthof global super-cities. Fully half of theworld’s super-cities are located in areaswhich have the potential of 7.5 magnitudeearthquakes. By the year 2025, more than5.5 billion people will live in metropolitan,super-megalopolis cities.

The bottom line?According to the prophecy of Jesus, earth-quakes will increase as the second comingdraws closer. Jesus gave us this prophecyso that we could prepare spiritually for Hisreturn. Later in Matthew 24, Jesus warned,“Therefore be ye also ready: for in such anhour as ye think not the Son of mancometh.”

Don’t wait until the quake hits to thinkabout what to do, because there won’t betime to think. Get ready now.

How should we prepare for events thatcould potentially usher us into eternity?Jesus gave us the answer. He said, “Excepta man be born of water and of the spirit,he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

After the EU Constitution was de-feated in 2005 by the French andthe Dutch, the European politicians

learned their lesson. You can’t trust the peo-ple!

They had to have a constitution in orderto finish the planned re-creation of the Holy

Roman Empire. But it was obvious theywould never get the unanimous approval re-quired for the ratification of the constitution.What to do?

state of the European Union countriessigned the Lisbon Treaty. Once the treaty isratified by all member states, a Europeanpresident will be elected and a European for-eign minister will be chosen. The rebirth ofthe prophesied Holy Roman Empire will becomplete.

All seemed to be going according to plan.In February, the French parliament ratified.Shortly thereafter, Holland approved thetreaty. It appeared that Lisbon would be rat-ified and the United States of Europe wouldbe official.

However, there was one problem. Ireland

had a law that required any changes to itsconstitution to be approved by a referendumof its people. And the adoption of the LisbonTreaty required changes to the Irish constitu-tion. The Irish vote was held on June 12th.When the votes were tallied, the treaty wasvoted down.

Nowwhat? For the treaty to become law,all 27 members had to ratify. European lead-ers immediately urged the rest of the EUmembers to continue their ratificationprocess. Although no one seemed to havethe answer to the Irish NO vote, it was gen-erally believed that a solution would befound if all other nations voted for ratifica-tion. Some believed that a few assurancescould be given to the Irish on the points thatthey found most objectionable, and then asecond vote could be taken.

Twenty-seven members vs. tenSome European leaders suggested a two-tiered European Union as a solution to theIrish problem. The states that wanted tomove into total unification could, while re-luctant members could be left behind untilthey were ready to take the necessary stepsfor full union.

Bible students have watched the rebirthof the Holy Roman Empire in Europe withfascination, but also with certain questions.The prophecy that foretells the rebirth of theHoly Roman Empire says there will be tennations that will join themselves togetherjust before the Second Coming of JesusChrist.

Daniel 7:24 describes the last-day ten-na-tion union:

“And the ten horns out of this kingdom

are ten kings that shall arise: and anothershall rise after them; and he shall be diversefrom the first, and he shall subdue threekings.”

This passage describes the ten-nationunion that will appear in the endtime. Theking that comes up among ten, replacingthree, is the Antichrist.

This same ten-naton union of the end-time is described in Revelation 17:12-14:

“And the ten horns which thou sawestare ten kings, which have received no king-dom as yet; but receive power as kings onehour with the beast. These have one mind,and shall give their power and strength untothe beast. These shall make war with theLamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them:for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings:and they that are with him are called, andchosen, and faithful.”

It is obvious that the European Union isthe rebirth of the Holy Roman Empire, yetthe prophecies say there will be 10 nations inthe union, not 27. Consequently, Bible stu-dents have wondered howwe get from 27 to10. Could the proposal of creating two tiersin the European Union result in the emer-gence of the prophesied ten-nation entity?

Another possible explanation for the tennations is the organization within the Euro-pean Union called the Western EuropeanUnion. This is the military arm of the EU

and presently is composed of ten members.Javier Solana is the secretary general of theWEU.

Summit of EU leaders about the Irish NOOn June 19, a top-level meeting of EU lead-ers was held at the EU headquarters in Brus-sels to discuss strategy for dealing with theIrish negative vote on the treaty. GermanChancellor Angela Merkel said that the Eu-ropean Union needs the Lisbon Treaty andthat it must be approved by all 27 members.Since Germany has a decisive voice in theEU, this would appear to rule out the two-tier possibility. Merkel went on to say thatshe was convinced Europe would find a so-lution to the Irish problem.

It was the consensus of the EU states thatIreland needed to be given time to work outher rejection of the treaty. However, therewas general agreement that a solutionshould be found by the end of this year. Thiswould allow for the election of a Europeanpresident in the June 2009 elections. If rati-fication is finalized yet this year, that meansthe prophesied rebirth of the Holy RomanEmpire will be fulfilled.

Gay activists regularly claim thatthey were "born that way" andthus cannot change their desires

or stop their activities. Yet there are numer-ous documented cases in which homosex-uals have changed. The Masters-JohnsonInstitute reported that: "A 25-year-old manhad his first sexual experience when hewas 13 years old. It was arranged by hislesbian mother with an older gay man.After that episode, his imagery and inter-personal sexual experience were exclu-sively homosexual.... The man wasmotivated to establish a heterosexual lifestyle because he was sincerely distressedby public disapproval of homosexualityand his personal loneliness. [After treat-ment, he] has been followed for 3 1/2years. His sexual interaction has been ex-clusively heterosexual. He has moved outof the gay community and has changed...his life style."(1)

Was this man's sexual orientation bio-logically determined?

If so, how was it initially set - towardheterosexuality or homosexuality?

And if it was set initially, how was heable to change?

The answers to these seemingly "eso-teric" questions matter a great deal. For

one thing, the political stakes are high. TheMarch 3, 1993 New York Times/CBSNews Poll reported that a majority of thosewho believe that gays "cannot change" fa-vored permitting homosexuals to serve inthe military. Only a third of those who be-lieved it is a choice felt the same way.

Many opinions about gay rights hingeon the question of whether gays are "bornthat way" and/or "can't change." For in-stance, 57% of those who believe it is im-mutable consider homosexuality anacceptable life style vs. 18% of those whoconsider it a choice. However, if homosex-ual activity is no more inevitable or un-changeable than drunkenness or drug use,most people seem willing to insist that ho-mosexuals abandon their destructive be-havior.

Two prominent 'homosexual' psychia-trists, examining the evidence of their ownlives as well as those of others, came to dif-ferent conclusions in this long-running de-bate. The first of these, Sigmund Freud,saw his homosexual urges as pathological.Through self-analysis, he overcame themand eventually rejoiced in the "greater in-dependence that results from having over-come my homosexuality."(2) The second ofthese, Richard Isay, confronted his desires,

pronounced them "natural," divorced hiswife and joined the gay subculture. (3)

In 1992 Isay admitted that the "convic-tion among most, though not all, dynami-cally oriented psychiatrists in general andpsychoanalysts in particular [is] that ho-mosexuality can and should be changed toheterosexuality."(4) Yet, while acknowledg-ing this consensus among his colleagues,Isay called attempts to change homosexualdesire "the greatest abuse of psychiatry inAmerica today." Why? Because the "at-tempt to change is extremely harmful."(3)Instead, society should change to accom-modate homosexuality.

Dr. Isay, who chairs the American Psy-chiatric Association's committee on Gay,Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues, argues thathomosexuality "is constitutional [that is,biological in origin]."(4) To support his po-sition, he cited as proof two 1991 studies -the "gay brains" research of SimonLeVay(5) and the "gay twins" study of Bai-ley & Pillard.(6)

In 1993, Drs. William Byne and BruceParsons, researchers at the New York StatePsychiatric Institute, critically reviewed"the evidence favoring a biologic theory"presented by LeVay and Bailey & Pil-lard.(7) They concluded in the Archives of

General Psychiatry that there “is no evi-dence at present to substantiate a biologictheory" of sexual orientation!

How could these researchers dismiss asinadequate the very studies that were fun-damental to Dr. Isay's argument - and thateven conservative columnist William F.Buckley referred to in 1993 as proving thathomosexuals are 'born that way?'

Byne & Parsons remembered that fromthe 1940s through the 1970s it was widelyargued and believed in the scientific com-munity that male homosexuals had a defi-ciency of male hormones. However, only 3"studies had indicated lower testosteronelevels in male homosexuals, while 20 stud-ies found no differences based on sexualorientation, and two reported elevatedtestosterone levels in male homosexuals."In spite of these other studies, textbooksalluded to the supposed "fact" of hormonaldifferences for three decades. But this "sci-entific" belief was false.

Gay BrainsByne & Parsons observed that the LeVaystudy was based upon a supposed func-tional correlation between the SDN-POAbrain center in male rats and a brain centercalled INAH3 in humans. LeVay reasonedthat since the SDN-POA had an effect onmale rat crouching/mounting behavior,then a corresponding difference in thesame part of the brain would make menhomosexual. He assumed that the INAH3in men was essentially the same as theSDN-POA in rats. But, as it turns out, the"effective lesion site within the anterior hy-pothalamus for disrupting mounting be-havior [in male rats] lies above, not within,the SDN-POA. Thus, the SDN-POA doesnot play a critical role in male-typical be-havior in male rats, and the correlation be-tween its size and mounting frequenciesclearly does not reflect a causal relation-ship." LeVay compared human brains withrat brains but failed to locate the analogousregion. Instead of the "bull’s-eye" that Isayand the mass media celebrated, it was anembarrassing miss!

LeVay's study also had numerous tech-nical problems. For instance, his samplesincluded 19 brains of gays who died ofAIDS and 16 brains from men whose sex-ual orientation was unknown. He assumedthe 16 were heterosexual, even though 5had died of AIDS. More importantly, al-

though LeVay argued that a small INAH3"caused" homosexuality, some of the gayshad an INAH3 that was larger than the av-erage size of the INAH3 of the "heterosex-uals," and some of the "heterosexuals" hadan INAH3 that was smaller than those ofgays. So, some of his gays "should" havebeen heterosexual and vice-versa.

Gay TwinsBailey & Pillard reported that 52% of iden-tical twins of homosexuals were also ho-mosexual. But after the media finishedhyping Bailey & Pillard's results, King &McDonald (8) published a new 'sexual ori-entation of twins' study, which found con-cordance rates for homosexuality of 25%in identical twins. That's half the 52% re-ported by Bailey & Pillard. Drs. Byne &Parsons noted the large proportions ofidentical twins in both studies "who werediscordant for homosexuality despite shar-ing not only their genes but also their pre-natal and familial environments... [which]underscores our ignorance of the factorsthat are involved, and the manner in whichthey interact, in the emergence of sexualorientation."

The evidence supporting the "born thatway" claim of Isay and other gay activists istenuous. It has been uncritically acceptedand hyped by the media and some less-than-careful researchers. But it hasn't beenreplicated by others and is riddled withtechnical problems.

On the other side is a body of scientificevidence that suggests that homosexualityis adopted by people who are confused,sexually adventurous and/or rebellious.This evidence suggests that sexual orienta-tion is flexible, not immutable. And the ev-idence comes from the largest studies onthe subject, conducted by researchers onboth sides of the gay rights debate.

Sexual Preference ShiftsThat sexual desire and behavior are flexiblewas demonstrated by the Kinsey Institutein 1970. It reported (9) that 81% of 684gays and 93% of 293 lesbians had changedor shifted either their sexual feelings or be-haviors. 12.58% of the gays and 77% ofthe lesbians reported a second shift in sex-ual orientation; 31% of the gays and 49%of the lesbians reported a third shift; and13% of the gays and 30% of the lesbians re-ported even a fourth shift in sexual orien-

tation before "settling" into adult homosex-uality. The shifts reported by these subjectsvaried in degree, but some were quite dra-matic - about a quarter of gays and a thirdof lesbians once had heterosexual desiresand 5% of heterosexual men and 3% ofheterosexual women once had substantialhomosexual desires. Heterosexuals in thestudy were much less likely to report shiftsin their orientation. Even so, 29% of 337heterosexual men and 14% of 140 hetero-sexual women reported at least one shift;while 4% of the men and 1% of the womenreported at least three shifts. Immutablethings like eye color or skin color don'tchange once, much less three or fourtimes!

Unlike biological changes, the shifts insexual orientation began at age 18 or laterfor half of both gays and lesbians. Sexualchanges, five or more years after puberty,are exceptionally late and without biologi-cal precedent in development. But changesin tastes (e.g., food or entertainment) oftentake place around age 18.

Other EvidenceThe same Kinsey study also producedother evidence that can not be explained interms of biological determinism, but wouldreadily support the idea that choice is in-volved in sexual orientation and behavior:

74% of their gays admitted to havingbeen sexually aroused by a female and 80%of lesbians said that they had been sexuallyaroused by a male; 19% of their gays and38% of lesbians had been heterosexuallymarried; 20% of gays, 5% of heterosexualmen, 7% of lesbians and no heterosexualwomen had had sex with animals.

Consistent with these results, the Fam-ily Research Institute (FRI) (10) con-ducted a nationwide random survey of4,340 adults drawn from 5 U.S. cities in1983 and found: 82% of those currentlylesbian and 66% of those currently gay saidthat they had been in love with someone ofthe opposite sex; 88% of lesbians and 73%of gays had been sexually aroused by some-one of the opposite sex; 67% of lesbiansand 54% of gays reported current sexualattraction to the opposite sex; 85% of les-bians and 54% of gays, as adults, had sex-ual relations with someone of the oppositesex; 32% of gays and 47% of lesbians hadbeen heterosexually married; and 17% ofgays, 3% of heterosexual men, 10% of les-


bians and 1% of heterosexual women re-ported sex with animals.

These are the kinds of sexual choicesone would expect from the sexually adven-turous or confused. Unless Dr. Isay and hissupporters are willing to believe that peo-ple are "born" to fall in love, get married orto have sex with animals, some measure ofchoice, rather than biological inevitability,must have been involved.

The ability to change explains the FRIfindings that: Overall, 7.8% of women and12% of men claimed to have been homo-sexually aroused at some point in their life.Yet 59% of the once homosexually arousedwomen and 51% of the once homosexuallyaroused men were currently heterosexual;5.1% of the women and 9.4% of the menadmitted to at least one homosexual part-ner. Of these, only 58% of the women and61% of the men were currently gay; 4.1%of women and 5.8% of men reported thatthey had, at least once, been "in homosex-ual love." Yet only 66% of those who hadfallen in love with a member of the samesex were currently gay; and almost a thirdof those who admitted to homosexual rela-tions in adulthood were now heterosexual.

People Can ChangeWhere is the "biological inevitability" or"immutability" in these findings? The evi-dence suggests that people can modifytheir sexual tastes. The FRI survey in Dal-las, (11) similar to the Kinsey survey inSan Francisco, found that 1% of heterosex-ual females and 3% of heterosexual malesat one time considered themselves homo-sexual (i.e., were ex-gay when inter-viewed).

A survey of 50 wives who had no homo-sexual experiences or interests up to age30, but who participated in homosexualsex acts as part of "swinging" (where mar-ried people swap partners) reported that allof these women eventually consideredthemselves to be bisexual.(12)

These are among the findings that seri-ously challenge the claim that sexual ori-entation is predetermined before or afterbirth, or even that it is permanently fixedin adulthood.

What is at Stake?If sexual orientation is actually a matter ofchoice like drug use, we can expect thatmore of our youth will try homosexuality

the more that it is tolerated and encour-aged. Along these lines, Dr. ChristopherHewitt’s (13) analysis of the frequency ofhomosexuality in various societies is sum-marized in the Table: societies that accepthomosexuality have more of it and thosethat disapprove of and punish it have con-siderably less of it.

With the above in mind, consider oursociety's future in light of D. Minkowitz'sDecember 29, 1992 editorial in the na-tional gay magazine, The Advocate:

"I am increasingly impatient with theold chestnut that our movement for publicacceptance has not increased and will notincrease the number of gay men and les-bians in existence. ‘There are more of usthan there used to be,’ historian JohnD'Elmilio has written. Firmly believingthis, I wanted to... argue the morality ofteaching kids that gay is OK even if itmeans that some will join our ranks...."

Indeed. Youth are often attracted to ex-citement and rebellion. The gay movementis growing.

Minkowitz also argued that the 'borngay' claim is nothing more than a smoke-screen: "most of the line about homosex[uality] being one's nature, not a choice,was articulated as a response to brutal re-pression.... 'We didn't choose this, so don'tpunish us for it!' One hundred years later,it's time for us to abandon this defensiveposture and walk upright on the earth.Maybe you didn't choose to be gay - that'sfine. But I did."

When Kinsey (14) asked 1700 homo-sexuals in the 1940s how they "got thatway," only 9% claimed that they were "borngay." In 1970, a similar percentage wasrecorded for 979 gays in San Francisco.(9)But in 1983, after the gay rights movementstarted to politicize the issue of homosex-ual origins, 35% of a random sample of 147gays(10) said that they were "born thatway.

Perhaps those who commit adultery,molest children or practice homosexualityare "born with" unusual biological influ-ences. But there is no hard evidence ofthis. In fact, it appears that participation inthese activities, like drug abuse or anyother chosen behavior, is a combination ofwill and opportunity. No matter how suchdesires come about, members of society arerightly expected to control their behaviorand not endanger others. e
