PRIMARY ELECTIONS TUESDAY JUNE 12: Register to Vote or Request an

Absentee Ballot

You need to re-register if you have

moved or even just permanently

changed apartments within

Goodwin House since you last

voted.

In November, we will elect a U.S.

Senator, U.S. Representative, and

Alexandria Mayor, City Council,

and School Board.

Democratic and Republican parties

have primary elections on Tuesday,

indicators for therapy and differences

a chance to meet your therapy team

POETRY REVIEW The scheduled speaker for the

Book Review — in the Auditorium at

3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24 —

has canceled because of illness. Merle

Thompson has volunteered to give us a

review of poetry instead. Merle will

bring some of her favorite poems from

30 years of teaching literature at

Northern Virginia Community

College. This might be a memory

journey for some of you. Come to be

reacquainted with those beloved

classics, or to meet some you’ve never

heard of. Handouts will be provided

so you can follow along.

TRIPS IN MAY All sign-up sheets for May will

come out on Monday, April 30 at

10:00 am. Please sign-up by the

Front Desk.

On Thursday, May 3 and

Wednesday, May 16, we will go to

see the Nationals. If you signed up

several months ago, your tickets have

already been purchased. You will get

a reminder in your mailbox shortly.

On Friday, May 4, join us for lunch

at Hank’s Oyster Bar in Alexandria.

The bus will depart at 11:30 a.m. and

return around 1:30 p.m.

Transportation costs $5.00.

On Wednesday, May 9, come to

Green Spring Gardens as they

present Potomac Valley

Watercolorists “Inspired By Nature”

featuring our very own Gretchen

Thompson. You can also take some

time to enjoy the outdoor area. The

bus will depart at 1:00 p.m. and

return around 3:00 p.m.

Transportation is $5.00 and

admission is free.

On Thursday, May 17, explore the

Burning Man exhibit at the Renwick

Museum. No Spectators: The Art of

Burning Man brings the large-scale,

participatory work from this desert

gathering to the nation’s capital for the

first time. The exhibition takes over

the entire Renwick Gallery building

and surrounding neighborhood,

bringing alive the maker culture and

creative spirit of this cultural

movement. The bus will depart at

10:00 a.m. and return around 1:00 p.m.

Transportation is $15.00 and

admission is free.

On Friday, May 18, enjoy lunch at

the Peking Gourmet. The bus will

depart at 11:30 a.m. and return around

1:30 p.m. Transportation costs $5.00.

On Friday, June 1, enjoy a special

lunch at Chez Francois in Great Falls,

VA. Due to the distance, the bus will

depart at 11:00 a.m. and return around

3:00 p.m. Transportation is $15.00.

The meal is at a fixed price of $45.00.

ENOLA GAY AND BOEING B-29 PRESENTATION Col Willey will cover the story of

the development and use of the

technologically advanced Boeing B-29

bomber against Japanese targets in

World War II. He also will cover the

creation of the atomic bomb. The story

will focus on the mission to Hiroshima

on 6 August 1945 by the most famous

airplane of the war, Enola Gay, and the

aircraft’s subsequent history. Be

prepared to see a significant piece of

history that is on display at the

Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center

near Dulles Airport. The program will

be held in the Auditorium on Monday,

April 30 at 3:00 p.m.

NOVA CONCERT A bus will be escorting residents to

the Schlesinger theater on Friday, April

27 for the Music From Around the

World concert featuring The Nova

Community Chorus, The Nova

Alexandria Band, and The Nighthawks

Jazz Band. The bus will depart at 7:20

p.m. and return around 10:00 p.m.

Admission is free and transportation is

$2.00. Please sign up at the Front

Desk. Eight people need to be signed

up for the bus to transport people.

PHYSICIAN SERVICES Dr. Sam Hong recently began

providing medical care to Small House

residents. He is now expanding his

services to Residential Living residents

in the Clinic and in their apartments.

His Clinic hours will be from 10 am to

noon on Fridays and will be for

Assisted Living or Residential Living

residents. If you would like to be seen

in your apartment, Dr. Hong is able to

come to you. Please call the Clinic to

be placed on Dr. Hong’s schedule. He

will accept appointments for morning

or afternoon on Mondays and

Wednesdays. Friday afternoon is also

available for house calls. Please call

the Clinic at 703-824-1283 or

703-824-1003 with your request.

CZECH FILM NEXT The next in the once monthly

Foreign Film Night will take place

Sunday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. The

film is Kolya, a Czech film which won

the Oscar and a Golden Globe for best

foreign language film in 1997. The

film takes place in Soviet-occupied

Czechoslovakia and is the humorous

story of a classical musician and

confirmed bachelor who has lost his

place in the state orchestra and, for

financial reasons, unhappily has to

take on the temporary oversight of a

small Russian boy. What ensues is not

what he expected.

and companionship to residents and

their families at a special time of life.

As a member of the hospice team,

you’ll receive training and ongoing

support while you visit hospice

patients. Volunteer tasks include

providing respite to family members

and visiting to provide companionship

and comfort.

Goodwin House Hospice volunteers

now have a choice to work at GHA,

GHBC, or in patients’ homes in the

community. Please consider working

in the community, where families have

particular needs for respite, running

errands, etc.

REALITIES OF FIREARMS IN AMERICA

Residents will have an opportunity

to learn about the role of firearms in

our country from someone who knows

the topic well.

On Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m.

David Chipman will speak in the

Auditorium. Mr. Chipman is Senior

Policy Advisor to Giffords, the

organization founded by former

Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and

her husband, Mark Kelly. He currently

also serves on the Firearms Committee

of the International Association of

Chiefs of Police. Previously, Mr.

Chipman served 25 years as a special

agent for the Bureau of Alcohol,

Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

(ATF) during which he disrupted

firearms trafficking conspiracies in

Virginia supplying illegal guns to New

York City. Mr. Chipman is a graduate

of the American University in

Washington, DC and received a

Masters Degree in Management from

the Johns Hopkins University in

Baltimore.
