From sheep to Chic: Journey of a Fiber-Arts Artist - rsvp to *07In the SSTFiber-arts educator Natasha Lehrer Lewis has carved out a paradise in Big Rock, IL. Her mission is to keep alive the traditional techniques and skills of generations past: spinning, dyeing, felting, knitting, crocheting, weaving, and more. Not only does she teach these in her fiber-arts studio, Esther’s Place, but also, with assistance from her family, she runs an organic working farm, raises sheep, spins their wool, operates a bed & breakfast, lectures, mentors, practices her art, and finds time to make tea for those who come into her shop. Natasha will bring beautiful visuals, demonstrations of spinning/felting, and inspiration. This creative entrepreneur – and time-management marvel – will also show us some sweet crafts we can make on another visit.

While fleeing the Nazis through war-ravaged Poland, she began saving the lives of people she did not know. Her family wrenched from her, Alicia rescued other Jews from the Gestapo, led them to safe hideouts, and lent them her courage and hope. No event could shatter this remarkable child’s faith in human goodness or her determination to prevail against overwhelming odds. steen & Eileen MetzEileen Metz grew up in mostly in England, but also in Egypt, Uganda, and Wales before going to Canada to see more of the world. Steen Metz grew up in Odense, Denmark. In 1943, at eight years old, he was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia (see Special Events in this Gazette for his April 12 presentation), rescued by the Red Cross in 1945, and returned to Denmark. After completing business school in Copenhagen, Steen began what was to be a lifelong career in the food industry. At this point in their lives, it’s tough to imagine they will find each other in North America! But the Danish food company Plumrose sent Steen to Canada where, he believes, the beautiful Eileen had traveled in order to meet him. (She smiles when he says this.) Together, they lived, worked, and raised their family in New Jersey and Illinois, later living in Pennsylvania and Virginia. After working for Sara Lee for 20 years, Steen moved on but continued to work in the food-service industry for another 25 years. After Steen made that change, Eileen went to work at Sara Lee, teaching in their test kitchens. They have two daughters and four grandchildren in the Chicago area. When it’s cold out, the Metzes regularly escape to Sanibel, FL. Eileen is an avid reader and loves music, theater, and the arts. Steen, also an avid reader, enjoys duplicate bridge and likes to exercise consistently. His passion and life’s mission, awakened late in life, are to do everything he can to ensure that today’s youth 1) keep themselves educated in order to hold on to our most fundamental freedoms; 2) understand what happened during World War II; and 3) are equipped to recognize evil in its early stages, when it’s disguised as something else.

One Anothering seriesBy Karen StathakisApril – Be Humble Toward One AnotherAuthor C. S. Lewis describes humility (or being humble) this way:“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; humility is thinking of yourself less.”In other words, if I want to be more humble, I will be less self-centered and more other-centered. It’s a simple concept that doesn’t necessarily come naturally or easily. However, it is a trait I want to develop more in myself.Looking back, I can see how some of my life experiences have had a humbling effect on me. My husband, George, required hemodialysis treatments 3 times a week for 20 years. For 12 of those years, I administered his treatments on a dialysis machine in our home. Being a caregiver tends to put the needs of the other person above your own. Perhaps there were unrealized benefits from that experience.

Another way I’m being humbled is through this process of aging, including the physical limitations and lifestyle changes that occur. That’s what brought me to The Garlands, for which I’m very thankful and blessed. At the same time, it’s been challenging to have needs I can no longer meet, needs that require asking for help from others, but grateful that help is available. Possibly the greatest awareness of humility happens when I change the zoom lens focused on me to the wide-angle lens that spans the whole world. I feel quite small and humble. Yet, we need to know who we are in relationship to the world God has placed us in. We were all born with talents, gifts and abilities to impact not just our own lives, but the lives of others, near or far. We may discover it can be quite satisfying to consider someone else’s needs before our own. That is an expression of humility.I’ll close with another quote from C. S. Lewis: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”Biblical References: Ephesians 4:2; 1 Peter 5;5; 1 Peter 3:8
