The Globe Guilders ended 2016
working in Balboa Park promoting
The Old Globe and the holiday tree
at December Nights. We were out in
force this year with many of our new
members making and serving pop-
corn, taking pictures of children (and
sometimes their dogs!) on the lap of
the Grinch, and assisting the Globe
staff with tours of the theatre and the
Grinch production set.
This traditionally has been two fun
evenings, coupled with the challenge
of finding a parking spot and weath-
ering the sometimes very cold weath-
er. This year, however, we were
pleased to find that it was our biggest
mini fundraising year ever, while we
also promoted the theatre to an amaz-
ing 1,000 attendees per hour who
viewed the set and the lovely cos-
tumes in the lobby.
Next came our last social of the year,
to install our 2017 Officers at the San
Diego Yacht Club on a gorgeous sun-
ny day where many strolled out onto
the deck to enjoy the spectacular
view. Many thanks to event chair
Carol Hanson and her committee for
a delightful luncheon, and to Linda
Van Vark for planning the lovely
installation ceremony. I thank all of
you for your vote of confidence in
electing me for a second term to
lead this tremendous group while
we help further the Globe’s artistic
and arts engagement programs in
our 62nd year. I also wish to thank
our new Guilders Board for your
willingness to serve.
We hit the deck running, so to
speak, to welcome the New Year in
January 2017 with a Meet and Greet
for the cast of Picasso at the Lapin
Agile, followed by the cast of Blame-
less. We hope you will mark your
calendars to attend this year’s
lineup of Globe productions and the
four socials planned by the

new 2017 Directory.
Now for the exciting news. We will
be Celebrating Couture 2017 - pre-
sented by Neiman Marcus and the
Globe Guilders - on Wednesday,
August 30th, at the lovely Omni La
Costa Resort in Carlsbad.
We are also pleased to announce
that Jo Ann Kilty, Guilder and Globe
Board member, will be our Honor-
ary Chair. We will have a team of
Guilders to chair this event this
year, including the very talented
Kim Neapole, Lisa Berry Shaw, and
Lynn Silva. You will not want to
miss this very special event.
Lastly, wishing you all a belated
Happy New Year 2017!
Warm regards,

IN MEMORIAM
the most dangerous missions in Vi-
etnam as the first crew in Ryan’s Raid-
ers. He was shot down on his 11th mis-
sion, after which the Ryan’s Raiders
mission was thankfully ended. Ben
spent almost 6 years as a POW in the
infamous Hanoi Hilton, while Joan
would be both wonderful mother and
father to Mark and Ginny. For 3½ years
of the 6, his family would not even
know if Ben was alive. He came home
with many physical difficulties but to a
happy, healthy, wholesome family.
After returning to the AFA, he taught
Aeronautical Engineering. He was then
promoted to Colonel and was selected
to be one of the two Deputy Comman-
dants. He was charged with all military
training, soaring and survival tactics.
He was especially proud of playing a
lead role in bringing the first class of
women to the Academy, accomplishing
the task in a mere 9 months.
In 1976, he became Commander of the
AFA Preparatory School, while also
being a sailplane instructor. After leav-
ing the Air Force, he served as Vice
President of STARNET Corporation, a
small pioneering telecommunication
company, as well as President of the
NAMPOW Vietnam POW organization.
Ben Pollard received the Distinguished
Engineering Award from Purdue Uni-
versity in 1979 and was the recipient of
an Honorary PhD in 2012 from Purdue
University. During his Air Force ca-
reer, he also received two Silver Stars,
two Legions of Merits, two Bronze Star
Medals with the “V” Device to signify
combat heroism, and two Purple
Hearts.
In recent years, computers, teaching
computers, theatre, the symphony, the
family and worldwide travel with Joan
became his new loves. Most of all, his
heart burst with pride as he watched
Ben Pollard was born in Shel-byville, Kentucky and graduated
in engineering from Purdue Uni-
versity. It was at Purdue that Ben
met the love of his life, Joan!
They spent a short time together
at Caterpillar (gaining a streak of
yellow paint in their blood) be-
fore Ben entered into the Air
Force and Pilot Training. Ben
would fall in love again with fly-
ing—the thrills, the excitement,
the other pilots, and especially
teaching students to fly complex,
difficult airplanes. It was a love
affair at first sight.
Then it was back to Purdue for a
Masters Degree in Mechanical
Engineering before the family,
now three with son Mark, headed
for the Air Force Academy in
Colorado Springs. It was another
love affair for everyone: the
mountains of Colorado, skiing,
the West and teaching engineer-
ing to some of the best students,
ever! Along came daughter Gin-
ny, who then completed the fami-
ly. Teaching in the spectacular
AFA teaching facilities with dedi-
cated, bright, fellow instructors
and their families made for won-
derful camaraderie.
But all good things must end. Ben

Globe Guilder Donna Blochwitz died on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, after a
period of declining health. She had
been a member of the Guilders since
2004, serving the organization in various
capacities such as a seamstress in the
Globe costume shop, helping with cast
and crew Meet & Greet gatherings, and
designing a Celebrating Couture print-
ed program, as well as preparing the
frequently displayed membership
board. Being a Globe Guilder meant so
much to Donna. She especially treas-
ured the experience of performing in
Odyssey, directed by Lear de Bessonet,
on the stage of the Lowell Davies Festi-
val Theatre in 2011. Donna was a mem-
ber of the Gaslamp Players, a group of
thespians who perform around the city,
assuming the personas of early San Die-
gans. No one who met her will forget
those beautiful eyes.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE
IN MEMORIAM Millicent Davis Froehlich passed
away on January 2, 2017. She
joined the Guilders in 1969 and re-
tained her membership through
2015. She was very involved in the
Guilders both on the Steering Com-
mittee and the Guilder Executive
Board. Her husband of nearly 66
years, Judge Charles Froehlich, was
very active on the Globe Board as
well as serving as President.

Millicent was a lovely human being.
I knew her fairly well over the years.
Lowell and I attended her daughter's
wedding in La Jolla. Charles was an
active President of the Globe board.
He and Lowell were friends and had
valued Globe Theatre and law pro-
fession connections.
Music was the passion of Millicent's
life. She was a musician with the San
Diego Symphony for many years,
and, for a period, kept a condo in
Mission Hills as a second home so
she would be near the downtown
Symphony. At that time, the Froeh-
lichs lived in North County (I be-
lieve Escondido). Charles and
friends operated a winery.
Millicent had been ill for a long
time.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE
LETTER FROM BARRY
Barry Edelstein with Picasso at the Lapin Agile cast members Luna Vélez and Donald Faison
Happy 2017 from the Globe!
We’re excited to usher in a memorable new year at the theatre, and with it, a slate of fantastic new productions made by great artists. We’ll kick off the year by continuing our creative relationship with two extraor-dinary friends who are returning to the Globe, each for the third time: Steve Martin and Gaye Taylor Upchurch. First up is Steve’s clever and crowd-pleasing comedy hit Pi-casso at the Lapin Agile, which I am thrilled to direct. Next is The Blameless, a compassionate and moving world premiere that was developed in the Globe’s 2016 New Voices Festival and is di-rected by Gaye Taylor.
The rest of the year boasts a fantastic line-up of shows in each of our three theatres – including world premieres, celebrated musicals, thought-provoking plays, enchanting fables, off-Broadway hits, Shakespeare, and more – plus impactful Arts Engagement programs such as Globe for All and AXIS, elegant events like Celebrating Couture and the Globe Gala, and count-less other activities and celebrations.
On behalf of everyone at the Globe, we applaud all your hard work and commitment to the Theatre. We wish you a wonderful start to 2017, and we’ll see you at the show!
Sincerely Yours,
Barry Edelstein Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director

HOLIDAY LUNCHEON AND INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS - DECEMBER 9, 2016
We had a festive luncheon in the Staff
Commodore Room at the San Diego
Yacht Club decorated with colorful
poinsettia centerpieces on each table
inspired by Mary Roberts and Judy
McMorrow. Huge buckets of bright
poinsettias were sold to three lucky
ladies. We even gave away the cen-
terpieces according to the nearest
birthday at each of the ten tables.
Our Social Hour was so much fun for
our 75 guests and the menu delicious,
but the Warm Chocolate Lava
Cake was the big hit of the day.
The recap of the 2016 Fashion
Show given by Ida Sandico-
Whitaker of Neiman Marcus was
enjoyed by all and she answered
questions about putting together
an ensemble show like ours.
Linda Van Vark installed the new
Board for 2017, Suzie Turner
presented the traditional roses to
the President, and all past Presi-
dents in attendance were hon-
ored by Barbara Bolt.
Thank you to my wonderful
committee who made this such a
celebratory day. Special thanks
to Bonnie Wright, who made the
money hat, and Tish Flemming
who wore it. Our net from the
luncheon for The Old Globe was
$1,525.13.
Warmest regards,
Carol Hanson, Chair

December Nights 2016 was a smash hit chaired by
Kim Neapole! There were 3,033 visitors to the thea-
tre on Friday night and 3,115 visitors on Saturday for
a total of 6,148 visitors or over 1,000 visitors per
hour for the six hours of theatre tours!!
Between the Theatre tours (6,148), Grinch photos
(654) and popcorn sales (1,725), the Guilders had an
opportunity to introduce more than 8,500 visitors to
the Old Globe Theatre and grossed over $6,700!
Thank you to the many Guilder volunteers who
made this holiday arts engagement event a huge
success!

HISTORY MOMENT #10 - THE OLD GLOBE THEATRE

It was a ritual, a tradition. In the 1950s and 60s The Old Globe winter season held open casting auditions in Falstaff Tavern, which was originally built for the 1935 Balboa Park Exposition. That Tavern was supplanted by the Cassius Carter Center Stage in 1969, and the Carter was razed and rebuilt in 2009 as the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. Audition notices regularly appeared in the San Diego Union and the San

Diego Evening Tribune, as well as other media outlets. Word-of-mouth also helped to bring expe-rienced as well as would-be thes-pians to try-outs. The turn-out by local and sometimes regional ac-tors, was large, with talented per-formers routinely driving from Los Angeles and surrounding areas. However, since shows in the win-ter season were not Actors Equity Association productions, opportu-nities for Equity union members were limited, though occasional waivers were obtained. Globe Artistic Director, Craig No-el, conducted the auditions, often taking time during cold readings to coach nervous actors. He took a personal interest in every reader. For instance, he advised perform-ers to try differing interpretations of characters, calculating whether, with proper direction, actors had potential to play specific roles, or
could fit with ensemble casts. He understood actors' personalities and worked with them. Those audition sessions were actually valuable tuto-rials for thespians. Audition evenings could be lengthy because so many community mem-bers longed to be heard. Noel al-ways gave each one a chance, stay-ing until the last actor had audi-tioned, even calling some to the front to read second and third times. Old Globe open auditions provided a central meeting place for theatre folk. Visitors saw the same people over and over, but sprinkled in the crowd were new faces, too. This decades long tradition was informa-tive, entertaining and filled with good will. Of course, few were cast. Most were not. But, all anticipated the next auditions. Actors were de-termined to get those roles, and, with hard work and lots of luck, that eventually happened...
The Guilders were there (seated below) with a table full of delicious nibbles. After partaking, the cast and crew set-tled down to listen to Barry Edelstein, Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director.
