...that’s our way of explaining the world of mission in the 21st century. Our missionaries come from all over the world, and they go to places all over the world. In an important historical shift, now nearly 50 percent of United Methodist missionaries come from places outside the United States. As the patterns of mission service change, local churches are also discovering exciting new roles in global partnerships that foster mutual participation and increased understanding.

The General Board of Global Ministries can help you and your church connect to this “everywhere” mission through a variety of resources and programs—from local activities to financial gifts to a lifetime of service.

The information in this booklet is a brief guide to the many opportunities for you to connect to mission with Global Ministries. More information about these programs is available on the Global Ministries webpage at www.umcmission.org.


There are many ways to get your whole church involved in the mission of The United Methodist Church. You can partner with a church in another country, partner with a missionary, host a Mission Celebration, support a particular Advance project, or challenge your community in gift-giving on a churchwide Special Sunday.

In Mission Together

Global Ministries is working collaboratively with church leaders across the world to plant new churches, especially where The United Methodist Church is new to the population. You can partner with a church in a Mission Initiative country through the In Mission Together program. Conferences, districts, and local churches can support and learn from these vibrant congregations through a partnership covenant.

Whereas the traditional approach to mission is often needs-based, short-term relief, the new vision of partnership embraces asset-based, long-term development. Participants in the mutual mission relationship commit to one another through a 50/50 Partnership Covenant, an agreement to participate equally and proportionally in a ministry or project. In Mission Together (IMT) Partnership Roundtables bring together participants in dialogue, helping to develop this exciting new paradigm of long-term empowerment.

Covenant Relationships

There are more than 300 Global Ministries missionaries serving in more than 60 countries that are available for support through a Covenant Relationship. You can partner with a missionary through a Covenant Relationship to provide financial, spiritual, and emotional support.

This partnership is much more than a financial commitment. The church and missionary form a dynamic relationship, praying for each other and communicating regularly. When you covenant with one missionary, you are supporting the entire United Methodist missionary community, on behalf of one missionary and in that missionary’s name.

Inspire, challenge, &educate Mission Celebrations

Inspire, challenge, and educate church members through a Mission Celebration. These events are also great opportunities to connect with mission projects locally, nationally, and internationally. Through plenary speakers, workshops, music, and personal connection with missionaries around the world, your church community can get actively involved with the global mission of the church. These events can be tailored to churches of any size, and can be held by a cluster of churches or a district.

Explore Advance projects and opportunities to give at www.umcmission.org/give.

The Advance

Build parsonages, supply communities with clean water, dig wells, empower refugees, and train community health workers. These are just a few examples of projects you can support through The Advance. Giving through The Advance enables United Methodists to partner with one another in mission and ministry around the world. The Advance is the accountable, designated-mission giving arm of The United Methodist Church that ensures 100 percent of each gift is used for its intended mission or ministry.

Through this giving channel, you can support specific ministries, missionaries, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s (UMCOR’s) efforts. The Advance communicates with donors, sharing stories about projects and missionaries. You can also track your gifts online.

Special Sunday Offerings

Four of the six churchwide Special Sunday Offerings support Global Ministries programs. These offerings present an opportunity to connect with mission and with the church as a whole, to support ministries that are important to the whole body. These four offerings are:

Human Relations Day supports programs for social justice and at-risk youth

One Great Hour of Sharing supports the administrative costs of UMCOR, which receives no apportionment funding.

Native American Ministries Sunday supports mission with Native Americans and provides scholarships for United Methodist Native American seminarians.

World Communion Sunday supports a variety of scholarship programs.

National Plans

Global Ministries administers four of The United Methodist Church’s six ethnic/language ministry plans. These ministries are supported by general denominational funds.

The national ethnic plans work to expand the ministry of The United Methodist Church in the United States without compromising the ethnic and cultural context of the communities they serve. Common goals of the plans include developing leadership, providing language resources, and engaging young people in their congregations. The ethnic and language ministry plans are:

United Methodist Development Fund (UMDF)

UMDF provides first-mortgage loans for United Methodist churches, districts, city societies, district unions, and conference church extension societies. Loans can be used for new construction, renovations, additions, relocations, and parsonages.

You can invest in this fund or request a loan, depending on the calling and the needs of your church.

Special Program on Substance Abuse and Related Violence (SPSARV)

SPSARV helps United Methodists and partners to be informed and compassionate responders to alcohol, other drugs, and related violence worldwide.

SPSARV organizes The United Methodist Church’s global response to alcohol, chemical abuse and dependency, and related violence by preparing clergy and lay leaders to be informed and compassionate responders to the needs of individuals and families impacted by the disease of addiction. SPSARV provides educational resources and training for the development of substance abuse ministries throughout the United Methodist connection. SPSARV’s HadEnough movement encourages youth and young adults to take leadership on substance abuse issues, and supports young people affected by addiction.

CONNECTING THROUGH SERVICE

There are many ways to serve others through Global Ministries. Opportunities are available for those who are called to give an afternoon, a week, or even years to service. By serving others, we connect with new people and with Christ’s command to “go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37).

Individual Volunteers

The opportunities for individual volunteers include such diverse positions as case managers for refugees, teachers, pastors, camp directors, children and youth assistants, and healthcare administrators and practitioners. The length of service ranges from two months to two years or more.

Through a long-term placement, you can use your personal gifts to engage and live in community with those you serve. The type of work is as varied as the placement sites, offering service opportunities around the world, including the United States.

Generation Transformation

Generation Transformation includes a variety of opportunities for young adults to serve others through Global Ministries. Programs such as Global Justice Volunteers, Individual Volunteers, andGlobal Mission Fellows give individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 the chance to explore your call to ministry and service.

The Global Justice Volunteers program is a short-term service option for young adults. Small teams of volunteers spend 10 weeks, in the months of June through August, learning and working alongside local communities, and exploring the role and responsibility of the church to engage in mission, ministry, and service that seek to transform our world into a more just place.

The Global Mission Fellows program is a leadership development and mission service opportunity that allows young adults ages 20 through 30 to take part in mission and social justice ministries in both international and domestic contexts. The program, building upon Global Ministries’ historic US-2 and Mission Intern programs, is now open to young adults outside of the United States to participate in mission service abroad and in your own home country.

Primetimers

Primetimers offers educational and mission service experience for older adults. Exciting 5- to 10-day events offer opportunities for educational forums, cross-cultural exposure, faith-filled reflection, and greater exposure to the work of The United Methodist Church and the church universal. Examples of educational trips include singing world songs in Jamaica, studying poverty in Kentucky, learning about Costa Rica’s rainforest, and exploring spirituality through a journey in Scotland.

Missionary Service

Individuals and couples interested in a lifetime of service can explore what it means to be a missionary for The United Methodist Church through Global Ministries.

As a commissioned missionary, you are usually (though not always) called to serve outside your country of origin, as a pastor, teacher, doctor, nurse (or in other healing ministries), social worker, church planter, evangelist,and in a variety of other ways through various forms of denominational or ecumenical ministries.

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM)

UMVIM teams go around the world to serve others and meet a variety of needs. Teams are formed in churches, districts, conferences, and jurisdictions.

You can serve nationally and internationally through feeding programs, afterschool activities, job skills training for adults, English classes for recent immigrants, and a host of other vital hands-on tasks. In the United States, many local churches welcome the help of volunteers in the construction or remodeling of buildings and many other service ministries.

Volunteer teams serve around the world in a variety of ways for one to three weeks at a time. Working cooperatively with partner churches, your mission team will assist with the construction of sanctuaries and other buildings, participate in worship services, conduct Bible schools for people of different ages, and come to know and love your sisters and brothers from other cultures.

Disaster Response

When disaster strikes, local churches provide the first response to their communities. Is your church prepared to help in your community? Global Ministries offers you disaster-response training at the local-church level through United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)-trained Early Response Teams (ERTs).

ERTs are often the first to arrive and the last to leave disaster-stricken communities. They come equipped to live and work in areas with few amenities and use their training to help families take those first steps to recovery. In the initial weeks and months after a disaster, the affected communities may not be ready to receive general volunteer teams. Work with your jurisdictional volunteer coordinator to determine when and how to schedule a disaster-response team.

UMCOR and UMVIM work closely together to coordinate volunteer teams so that their time and skills are put to the best use. Volunteers are essential to the long-term recovery of many communities.

CONNECTING THROUGH DISASTER RESPONSE & RELIEF

Relief Supplies Ministry

People of all ages and abilities can participate in UMCOR’s Relief Supplies Ministry, which provides packaged kits to people in need all over the world. You can gather with other United Methodists to assemble these kits and ship them to one of several depots across the United States.

You can also volunteer at the depots to prepare the kits to be shipped to areas of need. Cleaning buckets, health kits, school kits, layette kits, and others provide a tangible expression of love and concern to people in difficult circumstances—whether caused by disaster, war, or other events.

You can explore the Global Ministries website to locate hymns, songs, litanies, and sermons for church services. Discover the resources of Global Praise, a program that gathers and shares music from the global Methodist connection. Browse the songbooks celebrating faith from around the world, and listen to 30-second clips from the songbooks.

Global Praise

Vibrant worship, filled with engaging music that proclaims and activates deep belief, has long played an important role in Methodism and its mission movement. As United Methodists, we sing our faith and attract the attention of others as we make a “joyful noise” unto God throughout the world.

Global Praise is a component of mission that gathers and shares the songs of faith and mission from everywhere to everywhere.


Global Praise facilitates educational training events on the connection of mission theology and global song in the life of the church, and practical ways to engage it. Global Praise staff members serve as consultants to your local church, district, annual conference, and jurisdiction in designing creative multicultural worship services that are bound together by our strong Wesleyan heritage.
