May is high blood pressureeducation month

Take the opportunity thismonth to remind your em-ployees that getting theirblood pressure checked is avital part of staying healthy.

According to the Nation-al Heart, Lung, and BloodInstitute (NHLBI), highblood pressure – also knownas hypertension – affectsone out of three adults inthe U.S. The NHLBI alsosays we have a 90% chanceof developing hypertensionafter age 55.

High blood pressurecan lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure andother problems. It’s calledthe “silent killer” becausepeople who have it usuallydon’t have any symptoms.Fortunately, high bloodpressure can be preventedor controlled with lifestylechanges.

The Centers for DiseaseControl and Preventionrecommends the followingimportant lifestyle changesto keep your blood pressurein check:

• Have your blood pres-sure checked regularly.

• Maintain a normal bodyweight.

• Take at least one brisk10-minute walk, three timesa day, five days a week.

• Follow a healthy eatingplan of a diet rich in fruitsand vegetables, and low insodium.

• Quit smoking.• If you drink alcoholic

beverages, do so in mod-eration (no more than twodrinks per day for men andno more than one drink perday for women).

• If you have high bloodpressure and are prescribedmedication(s), take as di-rected.

If your employees haven’thad their blood pressure

checked recently, encour-age them to do so soon.Their doctor can check it, orthey can visit a local healthscreening event for a bloodpressure reading.

Your employees and theireligible family members canalso enroll in Condition-Care to help better manageheart conditions like heartfailure and coronary arterydisease – all at no extra cost. They can work with a nursewho can help them live theirhealthy best.

Benefi ts the American Heart Association

The Grove City Area Cham-ber of Commerce will host the 4th annual Hoops Off Broadway, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, Saturday June 2nd.

This year’s Hoops Off Broad-way will be a playground style tournament for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17, and will be played in the Grove City Town Center. Teams, coordinated by indi-vidual players will have at least three players but no more than four. Each game is monitored by a referee who is given the author-ity to call flagrant or intentional fouls as well as handle disputes, possession of the ball and scor-ing.

The registration fee is $100 per team. Local organizations and businesses are also welcome to sign up for the Free Throw competition.

“Company’s coming” can be a frightening thought. But if you are consistent with a few tasks, only last-minute freshening is neces-sary to make people think you’re a garden pro.

Regular lawn maintenance is a must. Mowing a foot-high stand down to 3 inches just before the party creates a whitish expanse that screams — slacker!

Edge the lawn occasionally. It’s hard work, but a crisp division

between bor-ders and grass makes the land-scape pop. I’ve got all sorts of weeds. Visitors, however, rarely notice the mis-creants because the scene looks well ordered.

Prune errant branches any time they block walks, windows, doors

and other places. Visitors resent being slapped by a branch while lounging on the deck or coming up the sidewalk.

For a quick freshening, concen-trate only on areas where people congregate, such as around the pa-tio or porch. Cut off faded flowers and yellowed leaves. Sweep debris from pavements. For extra visual oomph, buy a container or two of colorful flowers.

Most important — remember

people come to see people. The garden is merely the backdrop. So don’t wear yourself out keeping up appearances.
