GCC 2016 GCC 2016 GCC 2016 GCC 2016 Family DayFamily DayFamily DayFamily Day Thanks to all of our employees, families, and friends who joined us for our annual GCC Family Day on Saturday, April 23rd. It was a beautiful day with fun for the entire family. The food was great, the music was good, and we had the opportunity to celebrate the positives with our employees and their families. The kids had many activities and crafts in which to participate, and the adults had a great time as well. Our 2016 GCC Family Day event had the highest participation yet; both from a total attendance perspective and the percentage of our workforce who participated! Family Day statistics are represented below:

GCC 2016 Family Day Attendance by Employee, Guests, and Children

Employee participation represents 44.2% of our total workforce in attendance!

GCC Family Day; Employee Participation Trends: 2010-2016

And, based upon past years, we had another fantastic turnout!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our 2016 2nd Quarter Safety Leadership Education series, Supervisor Leadership Development Workshop - Part III. This training is the third of a three-part series which focuses on building supervisor competencies for effective safety leadership. It was an appropriate follow-up to the last two sessions which included the components of safety leadership, safety coaching, safety communication, situ-ational awareness, hazard control, and ergonomics for supervisors. In continuing with our efforts to provide training based upon employee feedback from the safety perception sur-vey (Travelers Safety View®) that we conducted in late 2014, the final portion of this curriculum concentrated on the following topics: • Post-Injury Management • Accident Analysis • Economics of Safety

At Gilchrist Construction Company, we continue to dis-cuss the correlation between managing our risk and em-ployee education. The more enhanced our skills, knowledge, and abilities, the greater our ability to safely conduct work operations. A topic of interest for 2016 is the enhanced knowledge of equipment, which includes proper maintenance of our resources. We made the commitment early in the year to conduct quarterly training events for employee educa-tion in this area. As part of our Quarterly Equipment Education Series, our partners at Timmons arranged for a vendor to facilitate an on-site Brake Certifica-tion Class on Thursday, May 26th. The curriculum included topics around maintenance, diagnostic, and installation instructions on: - air chambers - s-cams - brakes - cam hardware - brake hardware - manual and auto slacks - drums Congratulations to the 31 attendees below who completed the Brake Certification Class held at the Alexandria Equipment Shop; résumés, matrices, and IDP's were updated accordingly. These participants also received a Brake Certification Certificate of Compliance. Valerie Aymond, Chief Resource Officer

What is Jump Start? Jump Start is the state's pro-gram for school districts, col-leges, and businesses to col-laborate in providing career courses and workplace expe-riences to high school stu-dents, certifying them for the career fields most likely to lead to high-demand jobs such as those in the heavy highway industry. Sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education and The Rapides Foundation, regional Jump Start Teams are working to identify important career opportunities, specific to each region of the state, for which students may earn industry-based certifi-cations and credentials. By offering credentials that give graduates a leg up in Louisiana’s economy of to-day and tomorrow, Jump Start will prepare our high school graduates for a productive adulthood. GCC was proud to have been a part of this program today, as regional educators toured local businesses to learn about career opportunities. GCC was one of several employers asked to host the second annual Jump Start Work Experience Exchange Camp. 20 regional educators participated in a presentation and work demonstration at our main office in Alexandria. We talked with teachers about exciting career opportu-nities in the construction industry, the demand for construction jobs, and the cool technology that exists in our industry.

Thanks to Chad Bordelon for showcasing our high tech resources, including our drone. Our audience was impressed by this state-of-the art technology and expressed excitement about bringing the information they learned back into their classrooms. We are working to educate our future workforce! This is a great example of liv-ing the GCC Core Purpose of "working together to improve ourselves, our industries, and our communities". Thanks again to everyone who participated in Jump Start activities and also to The Rapides Foundation, The Orchard Foundation, and Steph-anie Moreau for coordinating this great event!
