As per media reports, PGVCL has come up with project of underground cabling for the coastal twin cities of Gandhidham and Adipur in Kutch in order to get uninterrupted power supply even in times of natural calamities. State-owned power distribution company, Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (PGVCL) distributing power in Saurashtra and Kutch will implement Rs.162 crore project to convert the entire existing overhead network of HT and LT lines in to underground network in twin cities. "This is the first-of-its-kind project by a state power company where power supply to entire twin city is being converted into underground network on such a scale. The underground network will have special provision for

telecommunications cable and traffic signal cables in single trench." The entire project is being funded by World Bank via soft loan and is part of National Cyclone Risk Mitigation project of Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). PGVLC officials said that it is an extremely important project considering that Gandhidham is an economic hub that is located in high risk seismic zone V, which makes it prone to earthquakes. Moreover, the coastal towns are vulnerable to cyclones too. Underground cable network will ensure that even during a natural calamity there would be no power outages. After long and continuous efforts of Chamber, PGVCL at last seems to have been convinced to implement this project. We eagerly await for execution of the project.
