GCCS Bites: Please provide us a brief history of how GCCS Uganda was established. Who were your first clients? Rabih: GCC Services (Uganda) Limited was established in October of 2011. Our first contract was awarded with Tullow Oil in Mid-March of 2012 and work started 1st April of the same year. We started with 34 employees. GCCS Bites: Please describe the nature of opera ons of GCCS Uganda.

Rabih: GCCS Uganda is currently performing full facili es maintenance and specialized labor supply. We are looking to expand our opera ons in to life support services and camp construc on to cover all 4 of our in country capabili es.

GCCS Bites: Please provide us some background informa on on the current projects that GCCS Uganda is working on.

Rabih: Tullow Oil - We are currently providing full facili es for all of Tullow Oil offices and residences in Kampala, Entebbe airport, Hoima town, Buliisa town and the field. We are also providing full camp and field maintenance in Kisinja and Buliisa. We have been contracted to provide specialized labor supply and we currently are providing Electrical Engineers, Maintenance Engineers and Civil Engineers. Others - GCCS Uganda has been performing minor construc on jobs, Electrical and Plumbing set ups, equipment hire and facili es maintenance for various areas of the industry in Kampala. GCCS Bites: What do you wish other people knew about GCCS Uganda? Rabih: With our extensive marke ng, we are widely recognized and there is li le to nothing that people do not actually know about our business. GCCS Bites: How many employees does GCCS Uganda have right now?

Rabih: Currently, we have 125 permanent employees and 30 temporary workers.

The discovery of oil in Lake Albert area in Uganda brought new

opportuni es to interna onal companies like GCC SERVICES to

expand its opera ons in the African region. It was in October

2011 when GCC SERVICES Uganda Limited was established in

Uganda, having its office located in the capital of Kampala. In just

a short period of me, its opera onal scope already expanded

comprehensive maintenance services to Tullow facili es in

Kampala and in the Lake Albert region. In line with the

company’s target to employ local staffs, 99% of their current

employees are local Ugandan na onals. Headed by Rabih Jaber,

Country Manager of GCCS Uganda Limited, he shared with us

how they have started their opera ons and how his team is

working together and aiming to go beyond what is expected.

Page 6: GCCS BITES Issue 01 2013/ March 2013

GCCS Bites: How do you mo vate your employees? Describe your employee recogni on programs.

Rabih: We have a recently organized sports tournament where some of our GCCS staffs par cipated and competed with the other companies working in the Lake Albert Field. This is the first me that we have this kind of ac vity, and we are planning to organize more of these event to mo vate our employees. We are also planning to have a monthly recogni on program for employees like “Employee of the Month”. This will be based on their performance and a cer ficate will be given to the awardee. GCCS also provides trainings to our employees to develop their skills which can be applied to their work areas. GCCS Bites: What would you say are some of the GCCS Uganda’s strongest points? Rabih: It’s the company family atmosphere that creates loyalty and pride among staff which is reflected on the clients. GCCS Bites: How do ISO cer fica ons affect the business opera ons of GCCS Uganda? Rabih: ISO cer fica ons are cri cal in Uganda and mandated by all the clients. We are currently flying under the umbrella of GCC Corporate and in the process of acquiring our first cer fica on which is 9001 which is an cipated within 2013. GCCS Bites: How do you ensure the health and safety of the employees on site? Rabih: All of GCCS employees have full sets of PPE’s and specialized tools for the different trades they are in.

Furthermore, we use the PTW (Permit To Work) system where all jobs are pre-planned and analyzed for safety and methods of performing the works. GCCS Bites: Describe the challenges that GCCS Uganda has overcome in service delivery. Rabih: One of the main challenges in GCCS Uganda was with Uganda na onal staffs dealing with the interna onal company rules, regula ons and procedures. We have overcome this through intensive training in all departments which has shown posi ve results so far. GCCS Bites: What was the biggest challenge (or opportunity) that GCCS Uganda faced and how did you manage to overcome it (or take advantage of this opportunity)? What was the most difficult decision you have had to make so far? Rabih: The biggest challenge was the ini al incep on of GCCS in Uganda. We were awarded our first contract mid-March 2012 and we managed to set up the whole company and all of its departments, the vehicles, tools, uniforms and PPE’s, the office space and furniture in 2 weeks me. We managed to simultaneously start the opera ons in 3 different loca on on the target date which was April 01, 2012. The most difficult decision for me was more on the personal side and that is to con nue living apart from my family a er my over 9 years of service to GCCS. GCCS Bites: What sets you apart from the compe on? Rabih: Our current management staff has between us over 10 years of diversified experience in life support services,

construc on, facili es maintenance and labor supply. This is giving us an advantage over local compe on and a good challenge for interna onal companies that are trying to enter the market. GCCS Bites: What posi ve trends in the market do you do you see taking place that will affect the company’s business? Rabih: The lack of qualified facili es maintenance companies with interna onal experience has opened up a new market for GCCS in Uganda besides the oil and gas business. GCCS Bites: How do you assess the economic situa on of Uganda and how does it affect the business? Rabih: The fact that Uganda is land locked creates in itself an economic challenge especially when there are any undesired ac vi es in neighboring countries, specially Kenya which is considered the blood line of Uganda. Currently, yearly infla on is about 24% which affects prices in both the facili es maintenance and life support sectors. GCCS Bites: If you could change one thing about the company, what would it be?

Rabih: Currently, there is nothing that I would change about GCCS Uganda as I personally believe it has set up as a good business model and opera ng very efficiently. GCCS Bites: What is your vision for the company’s future? Rabih: Current opera ons for GCCS Uganda are mainly in Uganda, but I see us growing soon into South Sudan and Kenya and eventually into many other countries of East Africa such as Tanzania, DRC, Rwanda and Ghana. GCCS Bites: GCC SERVICES has a ‘Go Green’ program at company HQ, what environmental ac vity does GCCS Uganda support? Is ‘Going Green’ popular in the Uganda business environment? Rabih: Going Green is becoming popular in Uganda with the influence of the many NGO’s that are in Uganda. As for GCCS

Uganda, we are mainly segrega ng our commercial and industrial waste and working with a specific waste collec on company that does recycling and specialized in industrial waste handling and management. GCCS Bites: What do you think will change for GCCS Uganda over the next five years? Rabih: I see GCCS Uganda growing into all of our in-country competencies which are Life Support Services, Construc on, Facili es Maintenance and Specialized Labor Supply. I also see us growing from our current 125 employees to over 500. GCCS Bites: What new developments or projects are we expec ng from GCCS Uganda for the coming months? Rabih: We are wai ng news from:

a. TOTAL for facili es maintenance in Kampala. b. CNOOC for a 15 man camp for a mobile rig c. Maintenance contract for 200 generators with one of

Uganda Telecom companies d. Life Support Services Contract with EUTMS (European

Union Training Mission Somalia) GCCS Bites: What’s your expecta on for the company for 2013? Rabih: For 2013, I am expec ng the volume of worked performed to be doubled in 2012. The business poten al in Uganda and its neighboring countries is growing and we are working hard on capturing as much as possible for the various opportuni es that are present within our capabili es.

The regional gas boom has a racted a long list of players including super majors (Total, ExxonMobil, and Shell), large interna onal E&Ps (Anadarko and BG Group), hybrid IOC/NOCs (Statoil, Petrobras and CNOOC) and smaller regional specialists (Tullow, Africa Oil, Ophir Energy, Dominion, Cove Energy, Neptune, and Premier Oil). It also has a racted numerous service providers such as Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, Halliburton and others. A report en tled Global Race for African Oil says East Africa will soon be the world’s most important energy producer in 2040, during which trillions of dollars will be pumped in exchange for its natural resources.
