INTRODUCTION This marking scheme was used by WJEC for the 2017 examination. It was finalised after detailed discussion at examiners' conferences by all the examiners involved in the assessment. The conference was held shortly after the paper was taken so that reference could be made to the full range of candidates' responses, with photocopied scripts forming the basis of discussion. The aim of the conference was to ensure that the marking scheme was interpreted and applied in the same way by all examiners. It is hoped that this information will be of assistance to centres but it is recognised at the same time that, without the benefit of participation in the examiners' conference, teachers may have different views on certain matters of detail or interpretation. WJEC regrets that it cannot enter into any discussion or correspondence about this marking scheme.

(b) (i) No answer or an incorrect answer. Answers that indicate an understanding of natural versus manmade fibres can be awarded up to 3 marks based on: The sock is made from wool which is a natural fibre and as such will decompose relatively quickly whereas the bag is a manmade fibre – nylon. Manmade fibres do not biodegrade quickly because of the chemical elements in the fibres. A simple one mark answer: The sock is natural the bag is manmade. A more developed response for 2 marks: The sock is made from wool which is a natural fibre which will decompose quite quickly whereas manmade nylon will not. A fully developed response for 3 marks: The sock is made from wool which is a natural fibre which will decompose quite quickly whereas nylon is manmade. Manmade fibres take significantly longer to decompose quickly because of the chemical elements. Candidates need to demonstrate knowledge of the source of

A more developed response for 2 marks: Shipping finished products across the globe causes pollution because the distance a product travels increases its carbon footprint. A detailed response for 3 marks: Shipping finished products across the globe causes pollution and the distance a product travels increases its carbon footprint. This practice adds to global warning. A fully developed response with detail for 4 marks: Shipping raw materials to China and also shipping finished products elsewhere all add to the carbon footprint of each product. (iii) No answer or an incorrect answer - 0 mark Award up to two marks for answers based on: The bias provides an element of stretch or ‘give’ in woven materials so that pattern pieces can be fitted more closely to the body and be more comfortable during wear. It also allows some materials to drape better and provide a more fluid shape (bias cut dresses and lingerie). A basic one mark answer: It allows for a better fit on the body because the bias stretches a little. A more detailed answer for two marks: The bias allows some stretch in the materials so that a much closer fit can be achieved which improves the look or style of the garment.

(v) No answer or an incorrect answer - 0 mark Award up to two marks for reasoned answers based on: Pattern language is a list of instructions that allow pattern pieces to be laid out and cut accurately; failure to do this will impact on the quality of the outcome where pattern pieces may not fit together as intended or important features such as darts will be in the wrong place. A basic one mark answer: Pattern pieces will not fit together if pattern language is not followed. A more detailed answer for two marks: Pattern pieces all need to fit together to make a successful product, failure to follow the markings will mean the product won’t go together as it should.

A two mark answer: Float dyes on a special medium, swirl into a pattern, then lay the fabric on the dye to take the colour. Award up to two marks for answers based on: SILK PAINTING: The silk material should be stretched over a frame; using gutta outline the main shapes of the design; infill spaces with silk paint; gutta forms a barrier so paint is contained in separated spaces. (c) No answer or a technique(s) that would not work - 0 mark Award up to five marks for a detailed answer that relates to one method or details relating to two or more techniques which would give a 3D effect to the panel based on: quilting the whole panel by stitching around a few of the main features; adding sequins or beading; adding French knots – hand embroidery; creating separate pieces that are placed and stitched on top of a similar shape, but stitched at one end only so pieces stand proud. A one mark answer: basic sketch / basic level of detail of one technique that would give some depth. A two mark answer: satisfactory sketch / some detail of one or more techniques that would give some level of a 3D finish. A three mark answer: good sketches / some relevant details of one or more ideas which clearly create some elements of a 3D effect. A four mark answer: very good detail / good level of detail of one or more ideas that would clearly give a clear 3D effect. A five mark answer: an excellent combination of notes and sketches that wold clearly give depth to the panel using one or more recognised techniques.
