Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth

Fashion fades, but style is eternal

20 yrs from now you will regret what you did not do

The more you study, the more you realize how ignorant you are

When men are rational, freedom wins. When men are free, reason wins.

Fame and riches are fleeting, stupidity is eternal

Men are from mars and women are from venus

One sees great things from the valley, one sees small things from the top

Good art do not choose sides

Intuition is the source of all scientific knowledge

One who aims at nothing usually hit at it

The bad news is time flies; the good news is you are the pilot

Taxes are already paid up in the sweat of the labor

The search for human freedom isn't complete without the freedom of women

Glory is fleeting, obscurity is forever

Facts are the enemies of truth

also expected to be cognizant of the recent developments in the sector from which they hail from.

Interviewers also ask questions on current affairs in the world of politics and business. Through this,

they not only try and assess a student’s knowledge and awareness but also his ability to think.

A candidate may also be asked to share details on his extra-curricular achievements and the

Some guidelines for a Group Discussion

Gather your thoughts and then speak in a clear tone. This way you already have a

structure about what you speak for the next minute or so

One of the most fundamental things: Do not look at panelists

You must come across as a decent person. Remember GD is not a knockout at IIM

Lucknow, so please be polite and courteous

A leader is chosen by virtue and not because of aggression. If you have good points,

people will listen to your points consequently and you will get more airtime

There is a thin line between aggressiveness and assertiveness. Know the difference!

While making a point, try to address all the participants

Body language: Do not make excessive body and hand movements. Also many a times, you

may not get the required space as the venue may be cramped. Be prepared for such

exigencies

Making an entry: Try to identify periods of lull in the GD. Look out for candidates who are

short on points and confidence to make an entry into the GD. Avoid cutting other people in

your panel, allow them to make their points but always be on the lookout for the lull periods

so that you can make an entry and share your thoughts

Keep your entries optimum. If it is a 15 minute GD, then speaking for about 5-7 times (30-40

seconds each will be considered optimum. It should not look as if you are not trying to dictate

terms to people

When you have been given the time to think, jot down all important points and also some

unconventional ones. Try speaking out early, because your points will soon be taken up by

somebody and hence you would run out of points (here the unconventional points would

come to your rescue)

When someone is making a point, try to think on the fly and come up with new points as

the GD progresses

Try not to get involved in 1 on 1 argument. Never argue with a girl. You may politely

disagree

In case you do not get a chance to speak, try summarizing the topic. However, you might

not be always asked to summarize, so do not consider it a given that you will be able to

speak at the end of the GD.

Opinions are best avoided during GD`s, so also personal experiences and inferences drawn

from them

In case of an abstract topic especially, think in a creative way and come up with as many

interpretations as possible. The examiners like different perspectives and innovative ways of

thinking

Structure the GD in your mind. Try to keep a smooth flow of the discussion. The panel

expects logical thought, coherent and creative ideas

If the GD becomes a fish market: First and foremost, you cannot do anything about this

situation. The only way you can escape that you try to moderate the group in some possible

way and also to keep out of the commotion

How to Prepare for the GD/PI Process

Read as much as you can in the coming days. Be abreast with the happening around the

world during the past 1-2 years

Have Mock GDs with your friends or with other call getters

Try to frame an answer for the common questions that can be asked in the interview and

rehearse them preferably in front of a mirror. This way you will gain in confidence

Get information about important facts and figures. It really helps if you can substantiate your

point with a statistic

Last but not the least, remember:

‘One who does not throw the dice will never get a six’

Wish you all the best for the GD/PI process. Hope to see you this year at IIM Lucknow!
