Architecture

The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses, 3e

Juhani Pallasmaa

978-1-119-94128-6 / 1-119-94128-8

192 pp. Pub: 27/04/12

General & Introductory Architecture

Top of the must read list for any architectural student. It questions the very basis of architectural design – reasserting the importance of all five senses.

This bestselling title has become a classic of architectural theory and is required reading on courses of architecture globally. It asks the far-reaching question of why, when there are five senses, has one single sense – sight - become so predominant in architectural design? With the ascendancy of digital and all-pervasive communication through images, it is a subject that has become all the more pressing and topical. Pallasmaa argues that the suppression of the other four sensory realms in adherence to the visual has led to the overall impoverishment of our built environment, often diminishing the emphasis on the spatial experience of a building and architecture's ability to inspire, engage and be wholly life enhancing.

This third edition is intended to meet students' desire for a further understanding of the context of Pallasmaa's thinking by providing a new essay by architectural author and educator Peter MacKeith. This text combines both a biographical portrait of Pallasmaa and an outline of his architectural thinking. The focus will be on the fundamental humanity, insight and sensitivity of Pallasmaa's approach to architecture and will be illustrated by photographs of Pallasmaa and his own sketches.

Juhani Pallasmaa’s previous positions include: Rector of the Institute of Industrial Arts, Helsinki; Director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture, Helsinki; and Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Helsinki University of Technology. He has also held visiting professorships at several universities worldwide. Peter MacKeith is Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Architecture at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis. Strategic Management

A more accessible version of Contemporary Strategy Analysis (CSA) better suited to the needs of undergrads and also those taking various Masters courses who require a less rigorous and more concise treatment of the subject.

Grant’ CSA has become established as one of the leading textbooks on strategic management for the global market and has been adopted as the required textbook at more than 200 business schools around the world. It has been adopted widely on MBA programmes and also on undergraduate programmes in leading business schools where instructors have ambitious learning targets for their students. Following strong feedback from the market, it has been established that there is considerable demand for a more accessible version of Contemporary Strategy Analysis – this is provided by this book.

It is the process of specifying the organisations objectives, developing policies and plans to achieve these objectives, and allocating resources to implement the policies and plans to achieve the organisations objectives. Strategic management, therefore, combines the activities of the various functional areas of a business to achieve organisational objectives. It is the highest level of managerial activity. Strategic management provides overall direction to the enterprise and is closely related to the field of Organisation Studies.

He has taught at Georgetown, UCLA, California Polytechnic, and University of British Columbia, as well as LBS and worked with companies such as Nortel, American Express, Zurich Financial Services and Lockheed Martin. Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management, 2e

John Mangan, Chandra Lalwani, Tim Butcher, Roya Javadpour

978-1-119-99884-6 / 1-119-99884-0

Strategic Management

Logistics and supply chain management are key aspects of today’s business world. This 2nd edition builds on the strengths and successes of the first edition and is written by a highly experienced author team.

The topics logistics and supply chain management, although often used interchangeably, are in fact distinct. This text covers both: logistics is concerned inter alia with flows of materials and related entities, while the subject of supply chain management is more strategic in nature and as such is a wider, intercompany, boundary spanning concept than is the case with logistics.

The latest edition of Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management conveys to both advanced students and practitioners the diverse operational and strategic content of the subjects of logistics and supply chain management. This text reflects these characteristics by adopting a truly global perspective. Featuring contributions from various experts in the field, the book also provides a variety of pedagogical approaches and there are both long and short case studies included to aid learning.

John Mangan is Professor of Marine Transport and Logistics at the University of Newcastle, previously holding positions at the University of Hull, University College Dublin and The Irish Management Institute/Trinity College Dublin. Chandra Lalwani is Professor of Supply Chain Management, Business School/Academic Director, Logistics Institute, University of Hull. Prior to this, he was with Cardiff Business School and was responsible for doctoral research in logistics, operations and supply chain management. Tim Butcher is Senior Lecturer, School of Management, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). His last role was as MSc Programme Director at University of Hull Logistics Institute. Roya Javadpour is Associate Professor, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, California Polytechnic State University.

The Hedgehog Effect: The Secrets of Building High Performance Teams

Manfred Kets de Vries

978-1-119-97336-2 / 1-119-97336-8

300 pp. Pub: 25/11/11

Business & Management

In today's global world organisations rely more and more on virtual teams. This new book provides a clear understanding of how to coach groups of managers, making them into effective teams that can bring greatly improved performance for their companies

The Hedgehog Effect is taken from Schopenhauer's parable describing a group of hedgehogs who need to huddle together for warmth yet struggle to find the optimal distance to feel sufficiently warm without hurting one another – thus sacrificing warmth for comfort. Kets de Vries refers to this as leadership coaching in a group setting can have high pay-offs because changes in leadership behaviour are likely to occur. Group leadership coaching establishes a foundation of trust, makes for constructive conflict resolution, leads to commitment and contributes to accountability: all factors that translate into better results for the organisation.

The book is one of the very few that touches on the topic of team coaching, and that deals with group coaching and change. Its focus is not just on improving the skills of individual leaders, but also on the dynamics of executive teams, providing advice on how to reshape the team dynamics to create a high performance organisation.

Manfred Kets de Vries is Raoul de Vitry d'Avaucourt Chaired Clinical Professor of Leadership Development and Director INSEAD Global Leadership Centre. He is also the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Leadership Development Research with the European Institute for Management and Technology in Berlin (ESMT) and has held professorships at McGill University, Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Montreal, and Harvard Business School.

A Guide to Modern Econometrics, 4e

Marno Verbeek

978-1-119-95167-4 / 1-119-95167-4

512 pp. Pub: 27/01/12

Econometrics

Established as a highly successful textbook, this title serves as a guide to alternative techniques in econometrics with an emphasis on the practical application of these approaches.

Economists are interested in the relationship between different quantities. Econometrics seeks to quantify these relationships on the basis of available data and using statistical techniques and to interpret, use, or exploit, the resulting outcomes appropriately. Econometrics is the interaction of economic theory, observed data, and statistical methods.

Traditionally econometrics has focused upon aggregate economic relationships with macro-economic models as the basis for policy evaluation and forecasting. Recent theoretical developments in this area have drawn attention to the modeling of macro-economic relationships and their dynamics. Since the 1970s econometric methods are increasingly employed in micro-economic models, describing the individual, household, or firm behaviour, by the availability of large survey data sets and by the increasing computational possibilities.

This highly successful text focuses on exploring alternative techniques, combined with a practical emphasis. A guide to alternative techniques with the emphasis on the intuition behind the approaches and their practical reference, this new edition builds on the strengths of the third edition and brings the text completely up-to-date.

Marno Verbeek is Professor of Finance at the Rotterdam School of Management and the Econometric Institute of Erasmus University, Rotterdam. He held previous positions at KU Leuven and Tilburg University, and visiting appointments at Trinity College Dublin and Université Panthéon-Assas Paris II. Stephen Morris, Nancy Devlin, David Parkin, Anne Spencer

978-1-119-95149-0 / 1-119-95149-6

448 pp. Pub: 17/02/12

Economics

Health economics is concerned with the evaluation of the effectiveness of health care, particularly by examining the social opportunity costs of alternative forms of treatment. The peculiar nature of the market for health care - that doctors have a major influence on both supply and demand - has attracted attention, as has the study of the options available for financing such services.

Stephen Morris is Professor of Health Economics at University College London (UCL). He is a member of the Health Care Evaluation Group and is affiliated with the UCLH/UCL Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre and the Division of Research Strategy. Prior to coming to UCL Steve worked at the Health Economics Research Group at Brunel University, the Imperial College Business School, and the Department of Economics at City University. Nancy Devlin is Director of Research at the Office of Health Economics (OHE) in London. Nancy joined the OHE in 2009, bringing over 20 years of experience in health economics research. Nancy has published original research on a wide range of health economics topics in economics, health services research and health policy journals. She has experience as a consultant and advisor to Government and non-Government health care organisations in the UK and internationally. David Parkin is Professor of Health Economics and Director of the City Health Economics Centre at City University London. His main research interests are the production of health and health care, the development of health status output measures for health care, health care decision making and studies of health expenditure. He is the organiser of the UK Health Econmists Study Group. Dr Anne Spencer is Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary University of London. Dr Spencer mentors health economists to use modeling techniques to aid decision-making at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). In addition, she is involved in research to apply modeling techniques to improve the design of clinical trials and to develop guidelines for researchers on the use of modeling techniques to inform cost effective studies. Anne is also senior health economics advisor for the Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit (PCTU).

Empirical Finance for Finance and Banking

Robert Sollis

978-0-470-51289-0 / 0-470-51289-X

352 pp. Pub: 07/10/11

Financial Accounting

Empirical Finance fills the gap in the market for a practically-oriented text on applied econometrics and other empirical topics in finance.

Empirical Finance is an area on the intersection between econometrics and finance. As a topic it is less theoretical than its Quantitative Finance counterpart and tends to be more about the empirics of finance – using data to learn

things about financial markets. Empirical Finance instead deals with the applied questions in finance with particular emphasis to financial systems.

The underlying theme of this book will be on how empirical analysis can be used in Finance to test financial theory, model policy implications, and to forecast for investment purposes, rather than focusing in detail on the statistical and mathematical theory behind the models used.

• Fills a gap in the market for a practically orientated book on the use of applied econometrics and other empirical methods in finance.

• Differs fundamentally from traditional finance textbooks by covering some less traditional topics such as Technical Analysis, Interest Rate Modelling and Behavioural Finance.

• Uses empirical examples throughout as pedagogical devices.

• Technically challenging theoretical material appears in separate boxes in each chapter, allowing it to be easily omitted for lower level courses.

Robert Sollis is Professor of Financial Economics at Newcastle University Business School. His main teaching and research interests lie in the area of applied econometrics, with a particular focus on macroeconomic and financial time series analysis. He has published in internationally recognised academic journals (e.g. Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Time Series Analysis), and in 2002 co-authored the textbook Applied Time Series Modelling and Forecasting with Richard Harris.

Accounting For Managers - Interpreting Accounting Information for Decision-Making 4e

Paul Collier

978-1-119-97967-8 / 1-119-97967-6

544 pp. Pub: 27/01/12

Accounting

A new edition of a successful textbook on how accounting information is used by non-financial managers.

Emphasising the interpretation rather than the construction of accounting information, Accounting for Managers encourages a critical, rather than an unthinking acceptance of accounting techniques. Whilst immensely valuable for planning, decision-making and control, users of accounting information need to recognise the assumptions behind, and the limitations of particular accounting techniques.

As in the previous editions, Accounting for Managers links theory with practical examples and case studies drawn from real business situations across a wide range of manufacturing, retail and service industries.

Paul Collier is Professor of Accounting at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He was previously at Aston Business School in Birmingham, UK. Paul was CFO of a listed printing company and has worked in senior financial and general management positions in the UK and Australia. He has also conducted numerous executive education courses.

Macroeconomics - Understanding the Wealth of Nations, 3e

David Miles, Andrew Scott, Francis Breedon

978-1-119-99572-2 / 1-119-99572-8

640 pp. Pub: 03/02/12

Macroeconomics

Revised and updated edition of an internationally acclaimed textbook for introductory courses on macroeconomics.

Economics is a fascinating and useful subject. The questions it addresses are fundamental: Why is the standard of living in some countries so much higher than in others? Why does unemployment sometimes rise sharply in a short time and what can governments do about it? Why do stock market prices sometimes rise by 50% in a year and then crash in the space of a week? When, if ever, should governments borrow to finance spending? Are countries better off by fixing their foreign exchange rates rather than let market forces drive the values of currencies up and down? These are issues that affect the welfare of us all.

The authors deal with sophisticated issues using advanced economic theory, but in a manner that is accessible to anyone taking a single course in macroeconomics. They begin with real-world economic issues, and describe why these matter, before embarking on economic theory, ensuring that readers emerge with a good practical understanding of the global economy and how economists think about it.

David Miles is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London and former Chief UK Economist of Morgan Stanley. He was appointed to the Bank of Englands interest rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee in June 2009. He is also a non-executive Director of the UK Financial Services Authority. Andrew Scott is Professor of Economics at London Business School, a Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and Scientific Chair of the Euro Area Business Cycle Network. Previously he was a Fellow at All Souls, Oxford and held lecturing positions at Harvard University and London School of Economics. He has won the General Teaching Excellence prize (for which he is regularly shortlisted). Francis Breedon is Professor of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary, University of London. Previously he was at Imperial College Business School and has taught at both London and Chicago Business Schools. Previous editions – Licensed: Italian, Portuguese, Orthodox Chinese

272 pp. Pub: 09/09/11

Architecture

The first up-to-date narrative of Post-Modern Architecture.

In The Story of Post-Modernism, Jencks, the authority on Post-Modern architecture and culture, provides the defining account of Post-Modern architecture from its earliest roots in the early 60s to the present day. By breaking the narrative into seven distinct chapters, which are both chronological and overlapping, Jencks charts the ebb and flow of the movement, the peaks and troughs of different ideas and themes.

The book is highly visual with over 350 images. As well as providing a chronological account of the movement, each chapter also has a special feature on the major works of a given period.

• The first up-to-date narrative of post-modern architecture — other major books on the subject were written 20 years ago.

• An accessible narrative that will appeal to students who are new to the subject, as well as those who can remember its heyday in the 70s and 80s.

• Features the work of premier architects: Foreign Office, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, Aldo Rossi and James Sterling,

Charles Jencks is an American architectural theorist, author and landscape architect. He has written widely on post-modern and modern architecture. His bestselling book The Language of Post-Modern Architecture (1977) popularised post-modernism in architecture and made him the leading author on the subject in the 70s and 80s. He is the founder of the Maggie Centres with his late wife Maggie Keswick, a charity that has become influential for its enlightened provision of uplifting environments for cancer care, designed by some of the world's most renowned architects. Jencks writes and lectures internationally on architecture and landscape design.

Narrative Architecture

Nigel Coates

AD Primer series

978-0-470-05745-2 / 0-470-05745-9

168 pp. Pub: 13/12/11

Architecture

The first book to look architectural narrative in the eye.

To architects the enduring attraction of narrative is that it offers a way of engaging with the way a city feels and works. Rather than reducing architecture to mere style or an overt emphasis on technology, it foregrounds the experiential dimension of architecture. In practice it is just as easy to be minimalist as maximalist in its execution. Nigel Coates' Narrative Architecture is the first publication to look the subject in the eye. It deals with its background, analysis and practice as well as its future development.

• A prominent figure in the design world, Coates has made a significant contribution to furniture and interior design, as well as architecture.

• Features the work of Will Alsop, Diller Scofidio + Renfo, Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas, Bernard Tschumi, FAT, Enric Miralles and NL architects.

• One of the first books to look at narrative in a contemporary context.

• Features over 120 colour images.

Nigel Coates is an architect, designer and educator. Along with eight of his ex-students, he founded the NATO group in 1983. With Doug Branson he began Branson Coates Architecture in 1985, and together they built extensively in Japan and the UK. He is a prolific product and furniture designer, and has designed for Hitch Mylius, Alessi, Fornasetti and Slamp. His drawings and furniture are in the collection of the V&A. He is the author of several books including Guide to Ecstacity (2003). For over 15 years, Coates was Professor of Architectural Design at the Royal College of Art, London.
