The Geist community is lucky to have an extraordinary bus driver who cares for her living cargo like no other: Linda Blair. Nothing is

more important to her than ge ing her students to school and back to their homes safely. She won’t let them o the bus unless she sees their key, then watches as they secure themselves into their homes. She makes them feel special by taking pictures with them and treating them kindly. She even spoils them with gi s, goodie bags and food!

“I treat people the way I want to be treated,” says 65-year-old Blair, who lives in Admirals Bay. Blair was the rst black driver for Lawrence Township Public Schools, where she drove for 30 years. She retired in 2006 to help her daughter, who had three children at the time. Her plan was to buy a motorcycle and travel with her husband.

Blair’s fate led her down a di erent path as she has dodged some obstacles along the

way — like the time she was withdrawing money inside the Central Indiana Schools credit union across from Lawrence Central High School and suddenly witnessed a bank robbery. “When he [the gunman] covered up my face, I imagined my casket in front of the church. I had just completed my transaction. I can’t believe I made it out alive and that he didn’t take my $210 in cash or my green purse on top of the counter.”

en, in 2000, Blair was misdiagnosed with ovarian cancer. She remembers how the doctor told her to make the most of her time with family and friends. “I knew I was going to die. I was 52 and never drank or smoked…I went and bought a movie camera so I could record myself to congratulate my only grandchild at the time [her 6-month-old granddaughter] for her future high school graduation.” Yet, while having her ovaries removed, the doctor learned that although her ovaries were infected, she did not have cancer.

In 2007 she was diagnosed with bladder cancer. A er having had surgery and six weeks of treatment, she has been in remission for six years. at same year, as a favor to a friend, Blair agreed to drive for a six-week period for Cathedral High School. Six years later, she is still driving for Cathedral! In fact, she now does her own routing and has recruited her husband, Jim Blair. Together, they share about 30 students among morning/a ernoon routes on the west side. ey also drive the band bus and a end ball games to support the kids they have come to adore.

“Linda is so involved with her riders. She’s like a mother to them,” says Ken Kaufman, director of transportation for Cathedral. “ ere’s a line of hugging going on around her bus throughout the year, including students who have already graduated.”

“You’re like another grandmother to many of these kids,” says Blair, who has framed pictures, scrapbook albums and photos

throughout her home of all her former bus riders. She refers to all of them as “her kids” and loves them as much as her own children and grandchildren. She once started hanging framed pictures around the top of the bus interior because she was so proud of her crew. The state police made her take them down for safety reasons. She says, “You see these kids more than you do your own .... They give me pictures because they know I cherish them and I will keep them.”

Her present and former passengers love her in return. They appreciate her advice, birthday and Christmas gifts, treats and pizza. She also provides strawberry shortcake with whipped cream, pound cake and other home-baked goods.

Unfortunately, Blair was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2013. She has finished surgery and radiation treatments. “I continue to stay busy and never stopped moving when I had both cancers,” says Blair, who admits that her husband and the

kids she sees daily give her strength. She admires the support from Cathedral. “Ken Kaufman is one of the best people I’ve ever worked for .... and the parents are wonderful people and have been so supportive. They all acknowledge Jim and me, giving us gift cards, even from parents whose children have gone on to college or no longer ride the bus.”

Blair remains overprotective of all students. “I just try to help them make the right decisions.” She remains positive and unleashes her sense of humor no matter what comes her way. She enjoys playing

slot machines, making crafts, singing for the Eastern Star Church choir and spending time with her husband, two grown children and six grandchildren.

She shares her philosophy of optimism toward the kids when she says, “As a driver, you are their first contact and can make their whole day. If they get on the bus and have already been hollered at, it can stay with them. I want them to be positive at school. They see me every day and feel comfortable with me. In turn, they keep me focused and well.”

Geist just got a bit more spirited. 21st

Amendment recently opened their 19th Indianapolis-area store on Fall Creek Road in the Geist Crossing strip mall, bringing their extensive selection of liquor, wine and beer to thirsty neighborhood consumers.

According to owner Jim James, selection, service and price set his store apart from area competitors. He’s been in the business for more than 40 years, opening the first 21st Amendment store in 1971. Since then, his thirst for providing the area with fine spirits has only grown and he’s excited about his newest Geist location. The 20th

21st Amendment store is already under construction in Westfield, James said.

Shoppers, though, are quick to pick up on James’ and his staff ’s passion for their product.

James is a red wine drinker. His love for the perfect pour has helped him build his store’s extensive wine selection, featuring many direct imports from France, Spain and even South Africa. Barrett Ludy, vice president of 21st Amendment’s wine division, shares James’ passion.

“I just like wine,” Ludy said, “which is both a blessing and a curse.”

Ludy’s passion for wine grew when living abroad. He started his career in the adult libation industry working as a bartender and wine steward in Spain. As a result, he’s eager to share a few Spanish-inspired summer concoctions, just in time for patio sipping season.

Sangria is most people’s first thought when it comes to Spanish wine drinks, but it can be labor intensive. Chopping fruit and chilling the blend can take several hours. Thankfully, there are other, less complicated Spanish-inspired mixtures to be enjoy.

Ludy recommends serving tinto de verano at your next backyard gathering. This refreshing cocktail is made by simply mixing equal parts red wine and sparkling lemonade (or Sprite), then serving over ice with a sprig of mint or raspberries as a garnish.

“It doesn’t even have to be a Spanish red, but of course that works well,” Ludy said.

Later on in the evening, perhaps when the

senses have dulled, Ludy suggests pouring kalimotxo. The simple mixture of red wine and cola (Ludy suggests Diet Coke) is an international version of a wine spritzer. Consider serving over ice and garnishing with an orange wheel or slice.

If you’re curious about these concoctions or other wines, Ludy encourages you to visit the store during the weekly tasting event. From 1 to 4 p.m. each Saturday, you’ll have an opportunity to sample some of the season’s best wine offerings. Right now, he’s been focusing the tastings on Zinfandels to accompany spring grilling and refreshing wines that will help you beat the heat this summer.

Have a large party or function you are planning? 21st Amendment will deliver your order door-to-door saving you the hassle of lugging bottles, cans or kegs around in your car.

Visit 21st Amendment in Geist at 9743-9747 Fall Creek Road, or call the store at 317-823-3070. View other area locations and specials at 21stAmendment.com.

Almost one year ago—June 27, to be exact—Lyle Palmer, general manager and head golf pro at the Old Oakland Golf Club, received one of those dreaded 3 a.m. calls: The clubhouse was on fire, with one-third of the building engulfed in flames.

Four hours later, thanks in large part to the local fire department and a sprinkler system, the fire had been extinguished. The cause of the blaze: discarded smoking material, likely a cigar or cigarette, in an outdoor trash bin.

Fast forward to today, and things are looking up for the 50-year-old private golf club, which is owned by Dawson Development Company. Palmer and the property owners have worked with a group of architects and designers to create a new, contemporary clubhouse, scheduled to open in early May.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a May 1 completion date,” Palmer said.

All told, construction and renovation will cost more than $1 million, Palmer said. The fire was so extensive that furnishings, TVs and even silverware had to be replaced. Although the club’s golf carts were not destroyed, they had be cleaned and scrubbed because of smoke damage. Part of the roof was missing, so snow delayed construction this winter.

Becky Augustin, a member of Old Oakland Golf Club and an independent design consultant, offered her services to help reinvigorate a clubhouse that was outdated and in desperate need of a facelift.

“Old Oakland, to my husband and I, has always been a fixture in our lives,” she said. “So when this came up, I said, ‘I’ll be happy to volunteer for this.’”

She said the old building previously “looked old and tired.”

First thing on the agenda: making the ceilings flat and introducing bulkheads for lighting and accent. The team updated colors to a neutral palette with variations of a warm gray. The flooring consists of attractive carpeting and tile. Furniture will be more contemporary, with dining room chairs and tables resembling light laminate with a slight pattern.

The club’s dining room will have a “sophisticated look,” Augustin said, with two large chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, creating a warm, natural atmosphere.

The patio—always a popular summer hangout spot—will have a “brick paver” texture so patrons will not slip.

The pro shop, dining room and other parts of the clubhouse will have floor-to-ceiling windows with clear views of the course. Another upgrade is an open kitchen.

e social area will include a 26-foot curved wooden bar, complemented by slate tile on the back wall, new TVs, lighted shelving and hanging pendant lighting.

“ e bar is going to the ‘wow’ factor—everyone will be shocked,” Augustin said.

e new building, with its redesign and

updated look, is the “silver lining” following last year’s re, according to Augustin.

“ e re was horrible, but it drew the club close together, and the owners have been really receptive to having this do-over and doing it right,” she said. “ is will be like having a brand new building.”

Lyle Palmer, general manager and head golf pro at Old Oakland Golf Club, hopes to reopen the clubhouse on May 1 after a fire last summer that caused $1 million in damages. (Right) The clubhouse has a “wow” factor with all new updates and furnishings.

The year was 1940, one year after the establishment of the Kiwanis International Foundation. A man named Walter Zeller donated 25 silver dollars to the foundation in order to inspire his fellow Kiwanians to build on that donation. That is exactly what happened! An auction turned that first contribution into $625.

Fast forward to 2014: The Kiwanis Club of Geist meets at 8 a.m. on the second and

fourth Thursdays of every month in the Fall Creek Township Community Room. Even though the club is small, the impact it makes is felt worldwide.

The Geist club is the first model club in the Eliminate Project, a project for which Kiwanis International and UNICEF are teaming up in an effort to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus. This terrible and deadly disease takes the lives of nearly

60,000 babies and a large number of women each year. To eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus, more than 100 million mothers and their unborn babies must be immunized.

As a model club, the Kiwanis Club of Geist must raise $10,500 for the effort in five years. Club members decided their first donation should have some meaning behind it. Member Mike Smith and his wife Susan Rayl, both attorneys, came up with the

idea of donating silver dollars, and they had some to donate. Member Nicole Bryan with Ameriana Bank called her bank and con rmed instantly that Ameriana had enough silver dollars in its possession for someone to purchase that the gi could reach 25 silver dollars. In total, the gi will amount to close to $500. Mike and Susan purchased those, and the Kiwanis Club of

Geist was set to make it rst donation to Kiwanis International for the Eliminate Project.

Ann Updegra Spleth with Kiwanis International visited the Geist club at its April 10 meeting. She accepted the donation and told members more about the progress of the Eliminate Project.

Whether back in 1940 or today in 2014, 25 silver dollars will save many lives in many countries.

Wentico and Company isn’t just a home remodeling company — or a restoration or handyman company — but then again, owner Todd Wentico isn’t just a handyman, carpenter, floor installer or remodeler. His business reflects his work. Wentico began his career as an accountant in a successful, growing corporation. He loved suits, ties and numbers, and held a master’s degree to prove it. His company was buying real estate when Wentico began ruining his beloved suits. The buildings usually needed to be remodeled or repaired, so while visiting job sites, he wound up getting down on his hands and knees, tearing apart old buildings.

He became his company’s vice president of real estate, but the promotion didn’t last long, because Wentico moved on to his new, long-lasting passion.

Wentico and Company has been serving a six-county area in central Indiana for 32 years. They provide a variety of services to clients, including carpet, allergen/air duct and floor cleaning; floor service and installation; mold, water and fire damage restoration; and power washing. “We do whatever you don’t want to do,” Wentico said. “There’s no job I can’t do.”

Recently, Wentico and Company did a small bathroom remodel. It grew into a kitchen update, floor installation and deck

maintenance because the customer was so thrilled with the results of their work. Wentico points out, though, that a one-room paint job is never too small for his crew. In fact, with the summer months approaching, many of his clients are making appointments for deck staining and sealing — a job that Wentico said is often daunting to homeowners, but is very rewarding to him.

“I love looking at a deck and seeing a beautifully finished project,” he said. “During the summer months, where do you spend the majority of your time? Your deck. You host parties and sit outside late into the evening.”

Wentico is so enthusiastic about his work that he and his eight-person crew attend seminars to stay up-to-date with new remodeling techniques and products. He said he finally gets to install a floor in a home with a cement slab by gluing the floor down rather than installing a floating floor. The new process will prevent movement and the need to readjust floating floors that shift after years of use.

If your floating floors do shift, the good news is that Wentico is around to do the

maintenance. There’s a good chance that if you’ve had work done by Wentico and Company before, the crew member who did the work is still on staff. “I have a carpet [cleaning] guy who has been with me for 20 years,” Wentico said. “I’ll put him against anyone else in the business.”

Wentico said his employees are behind the company’s success. Aside from major electrical or plumbing services, Wentico and Company is fully staffed with experts to handle any job. Recently, they completed a $95,000 home remodel in just a few months. He and his staff moved throughout the house in the most efficient, effective way to allow the homeowners to live in the house during the remodel. They started downstairs and laid new flooring, painted all the rooms and installed custom-made kitchen cabinets, a fireplace mantel and bay window seat. They moved on and remodeled all three bathrooms with new tubs, sinks and tile. All the rooms got new doors, and they even

installed a new staircase and banister. The homeowners were only out of their master bedroom for two days, and the crew cleaned up each night so the owners had as little disturbance as possible.

Listening to Wentico recount his remodeling projects proves that he has a passion for what he does, but he isn’t looking to sell the big job to every customer. If he can update quality-made cabinets with new fronts and hardware, he will. He stresses to his clients that care is more important than cost. That’s why he believes in what he does — cleaning your carpet regularly, vacuuming air ducts for a better air quality and treating your hardwood floors with respect. Morse and Geist reservoirs played host to the Indiana Bass Federation’s “Top 8” tournament the last weekend of April. Eight fishermen from 11 teams fished from 7 a.m. until weigh-in at 3 p.m. to find the largest bass in Morse and Geist reservoirs.

“A lot of these guys are weekend anglers that are probably some of the best fishermen in the world,” said Todd Hollowell, a professional fisherman who hosts _Bass Dr._ on the World Fishing Network. (The show airs at 10:30 a.m. Fridays and 8:30 a.m. Saturdays.)

Fishermen launched their bass boats at sunrise and matched up in a boat with a member of an opposing team. After receiving final instructions from the tournament organizer, they set out at 7 a.m. sharp to catch up to five bass at least 14 inches in length.

At 3 p.m., they convened at the marina ramp for weigh-in with the hope of catching the most total weight.

Dan Wise, a Geist Marina employee and Top 8 tournament director, organized and was host to the 88 competitors. He is a member of the Fall Creek Valley Bassmasters, this year’s winning team.

“Our guys come from all walks of life,” he explained. “They love to compete and take fishing seriously.”On the first day of the tournament, Shane Rees snagged a bass weighing 8.17 lbs. on Morse Reservoir.“That’s the biggest bass I’ve ever seen out of Morse,” Wise said. “It might be one of the biggest ever caught in Indiana.”

Rees ended up finishing in fifth place overall with 17.61 lbs. of fish.On the final day at Geist, Craig Rogers caught a bass weighing 6.46 lbs., which catapulted him to fourth place overall in the standings with 18.26 lbs. of fish.

The overall winner was Josh McDermott of Fishers. He came in with 28.06 lbs., four pounds more than second-place finisher Jeff Wehner (24.05 lbs.).

“I just fished shallow all day and moved around to cover a lot of water,” McDermott said. “I love these conditions where I can stay along the shorelines and not have to go out into the open water.”McDermott and nine others will go on to the Indiana state finals July 19–20 at Patoka Lake. If they keep winning, qualifiers progress all the way to the “World Series” of bass fishing: the Forrest Wood Cup, Aug. 14–17 in Columbia, South Carolina.

Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is an initiative launched by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the

American Medical Association (AMA) to provide physicians, other licensed health care practitioners and the public with a prequalified referral pool of fitness professionals who meet the rigorous standards of the ACSM/EIM program. Patients would work with these EIM-certified trainers to provide a continuum of care for their particular needs.

Groundbreaking research has proved that exercise, at the correct intensity and duration, not only improves the quality of life, it decreases the incidence of disease and chronic health conditions, according to the ACSM, a national organization headquartered in Indianapolis.

Dr. Robert Sallis, M.D., chairperson for the Exercise Is Medicine task force and former president of the ACSM, states, “If there is one single thing you could do to dramatically improve your health, there is no doubt that it would be exercise….Regular physical activity, at the correct intensity, is so powerful in maintaining and improving health that it should be prescribed just as a medicine or drug would be.”

Joe Damush, M.A., a certified trainer/owner of Geist Fitness, has been in the fitness industry for more than 30 years. Recently, he and his entire team of personal trainers have been nationally certified to present the EIM program.

To find out more about the Exercise is Medicine program and other health and fitness services, please contact Geist Fitness at [email protected]. Geist Fitness is a locally owned and operated fitness and wellness club serving the Fishers/Geist area for the past 15 years.

NEW RE/MAX PRESTIGE GROUP OPENS IN GEIST

RE/MAX PRESTIGE [email protected]

Wendy and Paul Mitford just opened a RE/MAX office at the Geist Marina Village.

Writer / Janet C. Striebel

RE/MAX Prestige Group has recently opened near the Geist Marina next to Puccini’s. New owners, Paul and Wendy Mitford, may be new to RE/MAX, but they already have an extensive history in real estate. For more than a decade, they have been running two successful real estate businesses by partnering their business management degrees with their personal passions.

Mitford Homes, Inc., their custom home building company, builds around 20 to 30 homes per year. Mitford Realty, Inc. serves as their property management company through which they lease residential housing and commercial o ce space, including the Mitford O ce Suites at the Geist Marina Village.

“In today’s economy, the real estate market is looking up,” says Paul Mitford, co-owner of RE/MAX Prestige Group. “We had a record year and I saw the wave coming. I’ve always been a conservative person. I try to wait to minimize risk. Since we have our location and have seen a huge increase in sales, I feel the timing is right; the wave is here.” Capitalizing on this economic peak, the Mitfords have also begun building a spec home on Geist, in Cambridge, close to the dream home.

According to RE/MAX of Indiana, RE/MAX ranks number one in agent productivity for the Indianapolis Metro area closing 18.7 units (on average) for the last 12 months. In addition, there are 75 RE/MAX o ces in Indiana and 1,279 associates.

Having relationships with many lenders, the new RE/MAX Prestige Group o ers the convenience of a one-stop shop. Essentially, you could utilize its services to build or list a home, or work under the umbrella or full-service brand of RE/MAX by running the business the way you choose. What’s more, this group will represent you even if you use another builder.

RE/MAX Prestige Group o ers a newly remodeled building with private space located in a prime market area with access to a vast array of marketing tools, a solid infrastructure and instant claim to a remarkable brand name. Another perk at this location is the RE/MAX LeadStreet contact system that serves as a mediator between prospective buyers and agents by capturing leads and bringing them to brokers at no cost.

e Mitfords agree that opening RE/MAX Prestige Group was the next goal in pursuing their real estate dreams. “We thought opening a RE/MAX o ce would be a natural complement to our existing companies. We chose RE/MAX because it has the best brand recognition, and we feel the RE/MAX value proposition ts with our other businesses very well.”

e Mitfords are looking for talented brokers. If you would like to join RE/MAX Prestige, contact Paul at [email protected] or call 317-945-7538.

Having worked much of the past year to develop the idea, Faludy said the idea was to combine the industrial-style cu ers from pizzerias with an “Old World” customized feel. He said it’s also designed for easy storage alongside baking pans.

e tool evolved through 11 di erent prototypes, re ning functionally, looks and performance, before Faludy launched a website to market the cu er in early February. He’s optimistic it’ll become a popular gi for guys who already have everything.

“I think guys are pre y hard to buy for,” he said. “ ey already have a shirt and tie and most of the things people think to get for them; I thought this would be a great gi .”

Faludy, 67, has lived near Geist Reservoir for roughly 18 months, since retiring from an executive position with Berkshire Hathaway. He remains active as a business consultant, saying he still works on the board of directors for three domestic companies and one in Australia.

at business background includes manufacturing, and Faludy said that played a role in the development of the pizza cu er. Speci cally, he said this project was also about nding a way to bring manufacturing back to Indiana.

“ is is a genuine American-made product with 100 percent American-made components, made by Americans in Middlebury, Ind.,” he said. “I think it re ects a mark of cra smanship.”

Originally from Hungary, Faludy came to the United States as a refugee at age 10. He discovered pizza four years later at a YMCA

summer camp and said it’s been a favorite ever since. One of Faludy’s favorite recipes is a Hungarian style pie (see recipe) that he calls the Goulash Pizza.

“Goulash kind of confers a Hungarian connotation,” he said. “Everybody who has tasted it has loved it.”

Faludy said the current plan is to market the cu er exclusively through the website, saying that ts with the customized business model. Looking ahead, he anticipates launching a new line of industrial-sized “Big Ass” barbecue implements this spring.

Asked about the name for his line of products, Faludy said the idea was to be irreverent and amusing.

“It’s all about fun, having a bit of a itude and not taking life too seriously,” he said.

“It’s not vulgar, it’s just kind of cheeky,” he added, at another point. “No pun intended there.”

Video demonstrations of the cu er are available on YouTube by searching for Big Ass Pizza Cu er, or visit bigasspizzacu er.com.

GOULASH PIZZA Start with a frozen thin-crust margherita or supreme pizza.

Add freshly chopped onions on top.

Microwave thin-sliced, spicy Hungarian sausage on paper towels to reduce the fat. Distribute the sausage slices on top of the pizza.

Spoon on a thin layer of lecso — a rich-flavored traditional Hungarian tomato sauce with cooked red pepper strips.

Sprinkle on a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack shredded cheeses to hold it all together.

Season the top with garlic powder, parsley and cracked pepper. Jalapeno pepper slices and/or banana pepper slices are optional.

Bake at 400˚ until the crust browns well.

- with Hans & Joe -In the past five years, we’ve seen an explosion of craft beer in the state of Indiana. Although iconic brands such as Budweiser have lost market share to “upstarts” such as 3 Floyds, Sun King and Upland (the three largest producers of craft beer in Indiana), about 95 percent of beer sold in the state is not made in Indiana. Nevertheless, the amount and quality of Indiana beer is at an all-time high, and the growth rate shows no sign of abatement. In this month’s article, instead of looking as specific seasonal brews, we’ll take a closer look at a few local breweries that are doing a particularly fine job of brewing beer.

3 FLOYDS3 Floyds is the largest and best-known brewery in Indiana. In fact, and with no hyperbole, 3 Floyds is world-famous when it comes to cra beer. e brewery is noted for its use of hops. Sometimes I feel as though I could identify 3 Floyds beer based on smell alone, such is the brewery’s mastery of hops. Dreadnaught, which is a Double IPA, has been consistently rated as one of the nest of its kind for many years, and the recent addition of Zombie Dust has only solidi ed 3 Floyds’ position atop the pantheon of producers of hoppy beers. For any beer drinkers who think that wheat beers are a waste of time, Gumballhead is an explosion of hop avor with relatively li le bi erness.

Most of 3 Floyds’ production comes in the form of Alpha King, Robert the Bruce and Gumballhead, but it is the Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout that puts this brewery on the world map. e beer is only available for purchase in bo les one day out of the year, and you have to go to the brewery to buy it. ese days you even have to buy a ticket ahead of time to enter the property on Dark Lord Day (April 26 this year), as it has come to be known. I have been to this event in years past when it was much smaller—say between 500 and 1,500 people. ese days, a endance can reach well over 5,000.

SUN KINGAlthough Sun King brewed its rst batch of beer in 2009, the brewery has enjoyed a meteoric rise and is now the second largest brewer in the state behind 3 Floyds (which has been around since 1996). Along with its production of great beer, Sun King’s success can be equally a ributed to its use of social media. Sun King causes the average Joe (the kind of person who never cared much about beer as long as it was cold) to start considering not only where a beer is made but also its level of quality.

Sun King’s Sunlight Cream Ale is sure to satisfy the beer drinker who is looking for a BMC-like avor pro le but di erent, and the Osiris Pale Ale will quench the thirst of hopheads. Along with the aforementioned beers, Sun King’s year-round o erings include Wee Mac Sco ish Ale and an IPA that changes with the seasons. e brewery produces many other beers on a rotating basis. One of the nest and best known of these is Grapefruit Jungle, a massive IPA that will be released sometime in the mid- to late summer.

BIER BREWERYBier Brewery rst opened in November 2010. Unlike a few other recently opened Indiana breweries, the consistency of Bier Brewery’s products hasn’t wavered since day one, and while the quality has always been high, it is still ge ing be er with every batch. Bier is one of the state’s smallest breweries, but every ounce of beer made is turned over within approximately two weeks. is high turnover ensures that if you are drinking beer from Bier, generally speaking, you are drinking some of the freshest beer available anywhere.

TownePost.com / MAY 2014 / TOWNEPOST MEDIA NETWORK

Disclaimer: If I were forced to make such a proclamation at gunpoint, and I could consider each and every beer made by any particular brewery, I would have to say that Bier Brewery is my favorite brewery in Indiana due to the unrivaled freshness of its beer and the high level of quality in each and every style.

Not every Bier product is available all of the time. Instead, beers are released on a somewhat seasonal and sometimes arbitrary basis. It’s kind of like a restaurant with a menu that changes every day. And whereas many breweries are best known for a handful of particular beers, Bier makes such a wide variety of extremely high-quality beers that it is di cult to focus on any two or three in particular as head and shoulders above the rest. However, if I could have only three of Bier’s o erings, I would suggest DFG Imperial IPA; Dred Brown, which is a Brown Porter; and any Saison currently available.

BLOOMINGTON BREWING CO.BBC, or Bloomington Brewing Co., is known to some as “the other Bloomington brewery” and is unknown to many, but BBC is a favorite of mine. e Ruby Bloom Amber Ale is a smooth and malty amber ale with no hop bi erness. e Roo op IPA is a perfectly balanced IPA, and BBC’s periodic releases of single hop pale ales are truly not to be missed! As a bartender who sees the dates on the kegs here at Patrick’s Kitchen, I can say that BBC (along with Bier Brewery and Sun King) is consistently some of the freshest dra beer around.

UPLANDUpland has been one of my favorite breweries for seven or eight years now. I’m one of those cra beer drinkers who eschews most wheat beers, but Upland Wheat Ale is one of the few for which I would willingly pay. It is refreshing, great with seafood and shell sh in particular, and o en served with an orange (I strongly advise against this, by the way).

Upland has really di erentiated itself from every other brewery in the state with its sour program. at’s right, I’m talking about sour beer. e brewery makes several fruited Lambics as well as a Flanders Red Ale called Gilgamesh, all of which must be reserved online via a lo ery system.

ese sours are released on a rotating but somewhat regular basis, and it is these sour beers that have put Upland in the national spotlight of cra beer. e brewery recently launched a session IPA called Campside, which is perfect for those hopheads seeking to avoid the sometimes-crushing alcohol content of most IPAs.

Consumer warning: Although approximately 99.9 percent of all beer should be consumed while fresh, it is particularly important to drink a beer like Campside IPA as soon as possible—within a month-and-a-half of its bo ling date. And hooray for Upland for pu ing bo ling dates on its products!

TAXMAN BREWING CO.Everyone hold on to your wallets: e Taxman Brewing Co. has come to Bargersville! Taxman focuses on Belgian styles, but I’m sure that there will be a bit of meandering from the plan. e brewery o ers ve beers in its everyday lineup and will produce other beers as time and space allow. Both the Standard, which is a Belgian blonde ale, and the Exemption, which is a Belgian Triple, are great beers, and I look forward to tasting the Quali ed, which is a Belgian Quadrupel. e Taxman tasting room and restaurant will open in July.

This article is too short to allow for a comprehensive description of every great beer in Indiana, but it is representative of my favorite breweries. As someone who has seen the inside of a few breweries and deals with purchasing and serving the product, I think that these breweries will be around for a while and will continue to improve the quality of their products. If you find yourself in a place that serves any of the products I have discussed, chances are there are others that you should try, too. Just remember: Life is too short to always drink the same beer.

Hockey is a rough sport — full of bumps and bruises — all in the name of ge ing the puck into the goal. at doesn’t mean that players are without heart, though. Just ask Nick Mpistolarides.

Mpistolarides is the 2014 recipient of the Indiana State High School Hockey Association’s prestigious Robert Gillikin Award and his school’s rst nominee for the Hobey Baker High School Character Award since 1991. e 18-year-old senior earned the statewide awards for his positive mental a itude and leadership abilities, both on and o the ice.

ough the hockey community is proud of Mpistolarides for his accomplishments, he remains humble. In fact, he won’t even take all the glory that comes with his own successes.

“I de nitely have to give credit to my teammates, coach, parents and brother,” Mpistolarides said. “ ey have shown me what leadership is and what it really means to be a leader.”

Mpistolarides said he was called to leadership by his coach his

junior year, even though he was o the ice. According to his father, Paul, Mpistolarides su ered a torn ACL injury while playing lacrosse as a sophomore. As a result, he was unable to play his junior year as he recovered.

“My coach told me that I needed to step up and help make the team the best it could be,” Mpistolarides said.

His leadership philosophy is simple. Mpistolarides is dedicated to making himself the best he can be and encouraging others to be their best as well. And though he applies this philosophy on the ice and in the locker room, he also takes it with him everywhere he goes. Mpistolarides helped launch the Best Buddies mentoring program at Bishop Chatard and regularly coaches a Special Olympics hockey team. He’s also a member of the National Honor Society and made the ISHSHA’s academic all-state team.

“When it comes to helping others be their best, I’m never looking to do the least; I’m always looking for ways I can do the most,” Mpistolarides said.

Paul Mpistolarides is proud of everything his son has accomplished. He coached his son’s hockey club before high school and has enjoyed watching his son grow as a player and a young man.

“Hockey is the one sport where freshmen can compete against seniors,” Paul Mpistolarides said. “One of my proudest moments was when Nick scored the winning goal at the state championship game as a freshman.”

Hockey is just one thing both Mpistolarides men have in common. Paul Mpistolarides is the man behind Midwest Uplink, an Indianapolis-based telecommunications satellite company. And like his father, Nick also plans to enter the broadcasting industry by studying telecommunications at Indiana University Bloomington next year.

“I’ve shared some of my best experiences with my dad,” Mpistolarides said. “I’m looking forward to continuing.

Nick Mpistolarides of Bishop Chatard High School has earned recognition both on and off the ice.

With bright pink paddles and fierce survivor spirit, the Indy SurviveOars are taking their fight against breast cancer to the open water.

The members of this dragon boat racing team—a “floating support group”—are all Indianapolis-area breast cancer survivors. Co-founded by registered nurse Lisa Heiden Peters and Kathy Martin Harrison in 2007, the mission of this nonprofit organization (known as INSO) is to provide breast cancer survivors with a strong message of hope, inspiration and encouragement. Today, the group has about 60 active members and two dragon boats.

One of the nation’s fastest-growing team sports, dragon boat racing puts 20 paddlers (10 on each side) in a long, dragon-shaped boat. A drummer beats in sync with the paddlers, motivating the team to the finish line, while a steersperson stands in the stern to guide the boat. The sport has its origins in an ancient Chinese legend: A man named Qu Yuan is exiled from his homeland and commits suicide in the Miluo River in protest against the corruption of his era. To save him, local fishermen take their boats

to the river and splash their paddles to keep water demons and evil spirits away.

More than 2,500 years later, in addition to being a whole lot of fun, dragon boat racing is used as physical therapy to strengthen the upper body, a particular need in women treated for breast cancer.

“Most of us suffer from lymphedema, swelling of the arm,” INSO president Genie Barker said. “Up until five or so years ago, we were told not to lift anything heavier than 5 pounds and to be careful. But we’ve discovered and research has shown that the movement, rotation and exercise with dragon boating actually help with the lymphedema. Not only that, but we found we were getting healthier, and in some cases, in better shape than even before we had cancer.”

The Indy SurviveOars’ paddling season runs from April to October, with three or four races during the summer. They’ve raced as far south as Florida and as far north as Canada, plus competed in Kentucky, Iowa and Indiana. The team will race July 26 in the Chicago International Dragon Boat Festival.

The team practices two evenings a week and Saturday mornings at Geist Reservoir during the season and attend Rowbics classes at Lawrence North High School during the off-season.

In October, the SurviveOars will travel to Sarasota, Fla., for the International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Festival, and in November, the group has its annual Pink Paddle Party to raise funds for race entry fees and travel, training, equipment, insurance and education expenses.

All Indy-area breast cancer survivors are welcome to join the team—and the team always needs volunteers, sponsors and donations.

“As breast cancer survivors, we all have different but similar stories,” Barker said. “But we all ‘get’ each other and are there for each other. You feel you can survive this thing.”

e life cycle of most plants is to bloom and wilt, but Forever Floral specializes in foliage that’s evergreen and never even needs a drink of water.

Founded by Geist resident Rhonda Rolfsen in 2003, Forever Floral is a co age industry that specializes in custom-designed silk plants for home and business spaces.

“People generally call me and say they have a spot in their house where they need something,” Rolfsen said. “I’ll go to their home and take a look, and we’ll come up with a plan for what would look good in that space and go from there.”

Rolfsen said her niche is high-quality silk owers and plants that look like the real thing. She said her handiwork is popular with those who don’t have the time or the inclination to deal with live plants. Common orders include table centerpieces, greenery for cabinets and shelves, and bathroom arrangements.

“Anywhere somebody would have need for a plant or a oral, that’s what I do,” she said.

Most orders take two or three weeks to ll, and Rolfsen said turnaround can be quicker if she already has the necessary materials on hand.

Rolfsen has cra ed silk plants for nearly 30 years, beginning as a hobby while she was a stay-at-home mom. As her children went though school, she’d donate arrangements for fundraisers. is drew a lot of interest and positive word-of-mouth. Rolfsen then moved to selling arrangements on consignment before building a home studio to launch Forever Floral in 2003.

“It just sort of evolved, and I found that I enjoyed it,” she said. “I love owers and plants—they add a lot of warmth and character to a space, and it’s something I love doing.”

Rolfsen said she’s planning an open house in early May in anticipation of Mother’s Day. Spring is typically one of her busiest seasons.

“People are trying to get ready for graduation, and they want their homes to look nice because they’re doing a lot of entertaining,” she said. “It varies; I seem to stay busy year round.”

In addition to working with homeowners, Rolfsen recently completed the rst phase of a commercial o cescape for Exel, a Johnson & Johnson warehousing and ful llment provider located in Monrovia, Ind.

Forever Floral is online at forever oral.us.com. For more information, call 317-823-1152, or email rhonda@forever oral.us.com.

Writer / Janet C. Striebel

After receiving nominations for many wonderful mothers in our community, we gave our readers the difficult task of

choosing only one winner. The new 2014 Geist Mom of the Year is Julie Marks, who intentionally enjoys making the most of every day. She finds a reason to celebrate life not only for her two children, Seth (11) and Brooke (9), but for anyone she knows. By using the Wacky Holiday Calendar, she carefully orchestrates nationally recognized moments like Teddy Bear Day, Movie Day and Ice Cream Sandwich Day. A rainy day might inspire an inside picnic or scavenger hunt.

Julie, with long, wavy red hair framing her genuine smile, greeted me at her beautiful home. She guided me to the kitchen, where I met her daughter Brooke, who was busy coloring Easter eggs with two neighbor friends. Suddenly, I realized there is never a dull moment in the presence of Julie Marks.

Why does she choose to live life to its fullest? “Actually, what drives me are two major events that happened in my life within months of each other: a near fatal car accident and the loss of my mom,” says Marks. In April 1996, Marks was the passenger in a car struck head-on by a dump truck, leaving her unable to work for a year. In August of that year, while she was in

rehabilitation, her mother was diagnosed with a rare terminal cancer.

Marks attributes many of her life lessons to her mom, who was so positive and well-liked by others. “My mom was a tremendous role model, not only as a mother and a humanitarian but as a career woman as well.” Unfortunately, in November 1996, her mother lost her battle with cancer. The viewing had to be extended to two days because there were so many people who wanted to attend, including a couple who came all the way from Japan to pay tribute to her mother.

Losing her mom strengthened her already close relationship to her dad. Marks recalls, “I focused on making his dreams come true. We went to Broadway shows and made each day special. We even traveled together on cruises to Europe and the Panama Canal.”

In 2002, Marks became a mother, which reinforced her determination to cherish every moment. She recalls, “I took both of my children to get their pictures made every week for the first three years of their lives.”

She is saddened that her children never knew their “Grandma Jewell” but thankful for the few short years they had with their “Papa” until he passed away in 2009 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

LIVING LIFE WITH A VENGEANCE“My motto is to live life with a vengeance,” says Marks, who has adapted this philosophy over the years. “We should create unique experiences every day because you never know if you will have tomorrow. I look back at the time I spent with my parents. They were my best friends. I have no regrets.”

As we talk in her living room, Marks points to the framed photos sitting on her bookshelves. She shows me a picture of her wearing a helmet when she attended the Chicagoland Speedway NASCAR racing school experience in 2012. She laughs as she says, “I got my speed up to 140 mph and I was in Kevin Harvick’s race car.” She then points to the photo of her when she participated in a flying trapeze school in Chicago, where she learned trapeze stunts and acrobatics.

In talking with me she shares how death has always surrounded her. She lost her first friend to cancer at age eight. Car accidents have claimed two of her friends, one in high school and another in college, and she has lost many loved ones in adulthood. She believes these experiences have helped shape her viewpoints about savoring life’s moments.

“Julie chooses to live life intentionally,” says good friend and neighbor Jen Searcy, who nominated Marks for this honor. “She’s the cruise director for our neighborhood. She puts a lot of effort into hosting fun events and goes out of her way to make sure everyone is included. Her home is a kid-magnet. I call her my children’s ‘fun mom.’ They call her ‘Aunt Julie’ because she is like family.”

Marks, a single mom, firmly believes the first 30 minutes of when your children get home from school are the most important. “This is when your kids will tell you what happened at school.” Marks grew up playing volleyball, basketball and softball. Her mom never missed one of her games. Being there for her kids has always been her number

one priority. Like her own mother, she has balanced home life and a demanding career as vice president of a Fortune 500 company for nearly 20 years and now as president and partner in her company, Beyond Payroll. Her beliefs, which are unconventional in corporate America, have become widely valued as she has demonstrated exceptional leadership to her employees. Her philosophy states, “No recital or kids’ activities will be missed on my watch,” and she encourages her associates to leave work and be present for these invaluable moments.

In fact, her highly innovative approach has been featured in the leadership books “The Encore Effect” and “You Don’t Need a Title to Be a Leader” and in television/ radio interviews. She has appeared as a recurring guest for the Mom’s Panel segment on the FOX-59 Morning Show.

Philanthropy is also very important to Marks. She has shared her passion for community leadership through involvement in sponsoring a child for the Make a Wish Foundation, leading a house build for Habitat for Humanity, volunteering for the Lawrence Township School Foundation and serving as a speaker and mentor for Dress for Success Professional Women’s Group, and she gives her time as a keynote speaker for many professional and women’s organizations.

Obviously, her children have begun collecting positive memories. Her daughter Brooke says, “I liked when we had Backwards Day.

SOPHIE BLACKWELL (11)“I like how she had Teddy Bear Day. We all brought our teddy bears to her home and played with them. We also had cookies and cupcakes and got to go swimming.”

CLAIRE BLACKWELL (11)“I like how she has sleepovers, fashion shows and how we get to make up dances and go swimming. She makes you always have a smile on your face and you don’t want to leave.”

MADISON SCHAUS (10)“She taught me how to ride a bike in the last two days. She is very fun, always has lots of holidays and is very creative.”

PAIGE GOODNIGHT (10)“I love her and coming over to her house. She made my summer great. She would never leave anyone out. She always throws good parties.”

CATE SEARCY (11)“She always has fun holidays even if no one else knows about them. One time she planned a surprise for my birthday with cupcakes and everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me.”

HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT THE NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN ARE SAYING ABOUT MARKS:

We rearranged the furniture; we ate pork, mashed potatoes and green beans for breakfast and had eggs, bacon and waffles for

dinner. I also like our Happy Jar. We write things that make us happy on sticky notes and put them in a jar we painted. At the end of the year we empty them out and read them.”

“I really like Talk like a Pirate Day,” says Seth, Marks’ son. “We get to have friends over, eat pigs in a blanket (pirate fingers) and green pasta (seaweed). Also, I enjoy Dr. Seuss’ birthday when we watch a movie, decorate the kitchen and have green eggs and ham and blue jello with goldfish inside. “As another tradition, every night at dinner, Marks and her two kids play Rose and Thorn where they talk about the best and worst part of their day.

The children aren’t the only ones inspired from Marks’ enthusiastic energy. “She is the most upbeat, positive friend who lifts you up,” says Crystal Blackwell, friend and former neighbor who also nominated Marks for the Geist contest. “She’s a remarkable

role model and an inspiration as a working career woman who focuses on making time for her children and family.”

Marks’ adventurous spirit has attracted one special new friend this past year. She recently got engaged to Dr. Michael Dennis and is planning a wedding. With a mom like this in charge, this soon-to-be-family will inevitably make more unforgettable memories.

Too often, many of us stay busy in our lives without taking a moment to grasp the present and cherish those most important to us. Sometimes we may need a kick-start of inspiration to feel renewed as we face each day. Marks gives us hope to find strength when she says, “I live each day focused on being fully present with the incredible people I have been blessed with in my life. I look back with no doubts for the past, only excitement for what the future holds.”

Reeda Todd stylists Laurie and Shelby treated Julie to a spa day like no other, complete with a facial, haircut, manicure, pedicure and make-up.

Empty nesters Kevin and Christine Wagner are experiencing a change in priorities. A er spending the last 30 years focusing everything around their three children, they are nally thinking about themselves. ey have transformed their two-car garage by placing maps of all 50 states around its perimeter, making it a colorful, conversational space with new meaning.

“I covered the walls with maps because the yellowing of drywall in garages drives me crazy, but also the maps remind me of places we have lived and visited during our 32 years of marriage,” says Kevin, who lives with Christine in Emerald Springs o Olio Road. “Our kids were born in three di erent states: Arizona, Oklahoma and Kansas. We’re originally from Michigan, but we’ve lived in Fishers/Geist since 1993 and our kids a ended HSE schools. Indiana feels like home now.”

A er his wife taught him how to wallpaper, Wagner started on one wall of the garage with Maine and the East Coast. On the opposite wall, he began with Hawaii

and Alaska, and then worked toward the center. He says, “ e actual wallpapering process is a huge challenge because all the paper state maps come in di erent scales, so Rhode Island may be the same size as Texas.” Although the total garage wall area was covered, he needed to ll in a lot by adding city maps and even some Canadian provinces that they have visited.

“When I come out to the garage, I see our daughter, Amanda (29), in Philadelphia; I see our son, John (27), in Minneapolis and our other son, McCabe (25), in Indianapolis,” says Wagner, who also painted the garage ceiling blue and had a blue epoxy oor installed. “ ese maps give our garage so much color and life.”

e inspiration originated in Michigan where Wagner grew up. He visited his buddy whose dad had the cleanest and most organized garage he had ever seen. Wagner admired how he kept everything in cabinets. Wagner has adapted this notion of a tidy garage but added a new dimension of his own — wallpapering maps. He’s almost

done with his project but still needs to complete his workbench.

“I like a clean garage because I like working on cars and lying on the oor,” says Wagner who worked at Ford Motor Company for 10 years. “I’m not a mechanic, but my kids have always brought their friends to our garage for oil changes and brake jobs.”

ese empty nesters continue to splurge and buy things they wouldn’t have done when their children were at home. Wagner says, “We are buying and doing things more impractically now since we don’t have to always think of the kids rst. My garage is just one part of this transformation.”

Wagner admits that his wife has ideas of her own. She has already bought a height/growth gauge like the kind you see in doctor’s o ces so that she can someday use it for measuring their future grandchildren’s height. Now that the garage is almost complete, she knows it’s her turn to manage a project. She plans to update the kitchen next!

Andrea & Ashley Johnson, husband/wife duo & owners of the Blue Mile, worked with local brewery Flat 12 Bierwerks to co-brand a pale ale beer crafted just for runners.

I t’s not unusual to assume runners are health nuts — and that beer would be the last thing on their postrun go-to list. Indeed, the folks at Flat12

Bierwerks, a cra beer company on North Dorman Street, were a bit perplexed when they were approached about creating a co-branded beer for runners.

But it all makes perfect sense to Ashley Johnson and his wife, Andrea, who are both big cra -beer lovers as well as owners of the BlueMile specialty running stores in Carmel, Fishers, Broad Ripple and other locations in Indiana and Kentucky.

e Johnsons approached Flat12 about coming up with a beer geared toward runners “that people who exercise would like to drink a er they run,” Ashley said. “ ey said, ‘Why would anyone want that?’ [and I said], ‘Well, they’re drinking something, aren’t they?’.… at was when it all started.”

“When we rst moved here in 2000, there wasn’t a lot of cra beer in Indianapolis,” said Andrea, who is thrilled that cra beers have gradually taken hold in the area. “We have this BlueMile [running] series in the summertime, and we started coming to Flat12 [a erward]. Runners and walkers and tness enthusiasts tend to be very active, outgoing and like to try new things. .. . . So they were joining us at the di erent breweries, and we thought that we should have a beer for Blue Mile.

“We started pestering the Flat12 people about it, and they nally agreed. It kind of blossomed from hanging out at Flat12,” she said.

Once the folks at Flat12 were on board, it was just a ma er of coming up with the right beer, which has been dubbed Brew Mile. “It’s an accessible, light, easy-drinking beer,” said Flat12 sales representative Derreck Ramsey of the extra-pale ale. It “drinks clean and has a nishing hop kick.” And the beer’s look meshes nicely with Blue Mile.

“They’ve got a sleek truck. They’ve got cool stores where everything feels like it’s very well thought out,” said Flat12’s vice president of marketing, Bob Weaver. Flat12 has been in the area for three years, and the owners were happy to connect with an established business like Blue Mile.

Once the team came up with the name for the beer and the idea for the label, they started thinking about what the bottle would look like.

“Then we started doing some canning with our Half Cycle IPA, and that’s when we started thinking about runners and the scenarios about where they’re enjoying their beer — whether it’s the finishers’ tent or on vacation or on the beach somewhere or just home. Maybe a can would be preferable?” Weaver said. “So we started going in that direction. That actually provided a really cool look and feel that fell in line with the

way Blue Mile does things. This can feels nice and trim and just put together. It felt like it fit a lot better [than a bottle].”

Ramsey is excited about Brew Mile’s potential, given the great sense of community that’s built into running. “Typically, you’ll get a bunch of people that will meet up on the weekends and go for a run, do impromptu 2- or 3-mile runs, and

then they’ll all go out together,” he said. His goal is to get Brew Mile into all the pubs and restaurants these runners already head to.

“Even people that aren’t runners [will like it]. It’s a great beer,” Ramsey said.

“It took a while for us to get there, but when we got there, it was like, That’s it!” Weaver said, punctuating his comment with a

clap.

Brew Mile, “the official beer of the finishers’ tent,” is available on draft right now and will be available in cans this summer. Ask for it around town, or check it out at Flat12 Bierwerk’s taproom at 414 N. Dorman St. Thursdays through Sundays. For more information, call Flat12 at 317-635-BEER. Learn more about BlueMile at BlueMile.com.

Bob Weaver, VP of Marketing for Flat 12 Bierwerks, led the taste testing with runners to find just the right taste. Watch a video interview about the new beer at TownePost.com.

ATTENTION, ACUTE OR CHRONIC BACK OR SPINE PAIN SUFFERERS! ere is a local medical facility, Midwest Pain & Spine, that specializes in e ective alternative treatments using minimally invasive procedures to diagnose, treat and manage your condition. Don’t assume that all traditionally trained orthopedic physicians have the requisite training and experience required to provide the minimally invasive treatments made possible by the new advanced surgical technologies.

Dr. Steven Levine, who has years of specialized training in pain management, established Midwest Pain & Spine in 2001. e clinic’s goal is to reduce or eliminate pain and allow patients to continue to have a more active and enjoyable lifestyle. Dr. Levine has been a pioneer in the development and use of minimally invasive surgical techniques to eliminate back pain. He is a founding member and vice president of the Society for Advanced Spinal Interventions, an organization dedicated to the education, training and professional representation of the emerging eld of minimally invasive spinal surgery.

Dr. Levine is also a frequent lecturer and educator in the eld of interventional pain medicine.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, in a traditional open spinal surgery, the surgeon makes a 3- to 5-inch-long incision that can damage so tissue and muscle. As a result, there is a greater potential for muscle and ligament injury, and patients may have a di erent kind of pain a er surgery then they felt prior to surgery. is can lead to a longer recovery period and chronic pain. In a minimally invasive surgical procedure, the surgeon uses a small endoscope, which results in minimal damage to muscle and ligaments and maintains the normal structural integrity of the spine. e smaller incision and less invasive procedure cause less bleeding, minimal scar formation and a shorter recovery time.

If you su er from acute or chronic back pain, contact Midwest Pain & Spine to discover the minimally invasive treatments available to treat your painful condition and get you back to enjoying life fully.

I am a full-time college student and football player. My back and leg pain was keeping me not only off the fi eld but sometimes out of class. Dr. Levine was able to accommodate my schedule, and over winter break, I had a minimally invasive endoscopic diske-ctomy. I was awake during the procedure, and about halfway through, I became aware that I was suddenly pain-free! After the procedure, I had very little discomfort and only a Band-Aid on my back. I was able to return to practice and conditioning very quickly, and now I am looking forward to the start of the upcom-ing season. Thanks to Dr. Levine, I have my life back.” —C.L.

As a radiologist, I was well aware that something needed to be done to alleviate my back pain and the severe pain radiating into my leg. I was told I needed spine surgery. I did some research and found Dr. Levine, a well-known expert in the fi eld of mini-mally invasive spine surgery. I fl ew to Indianapolis and had the procedure performed on a Friday. He was able to achieve direct visualization with a small endoscope, and with the use of a laser and small instruments, he was able to remove my disk herniation without having to subject me to general anesthesia. I was awake and comfortable throughout the surgery. I left the surgery center with a Band-Aid on my back and my pain was completely gone. By Saturday evening I was well enough to join Dr. Levine and his wife for dinner. I returned home to Florida on Sunday and was back to seeing my own patients on Monday. It’s been two years and I am still pain-free. I would recommend a minimally invasive diskectomy over open spine surgery to all my patients. Dr. Levine was terrifi c and has more than 14 years of experience in this technique and is actively involved in training surgeons on how to perform this procedure.” —Dr. S.B., Ft. Myers, Florida

e bright blossoms of spring and early summer are a welcome sight this time of year. eir brilliant colors and sweet fragrances are a sure sign that warmer weather is to come. And according to Julie Hollis of Julie’s Flowers of Geist, it’s easy to decorate your home and yard with the fresh spring blossoms you might nd in your garden, at the farmers’ market or even at your local supermarket.

Not only is it easy to brighten up your life with owers, it’s essential.

“A er this winter, we need it! Flowers are an inexpensive and simple way to add a burst of color to what might otherwise seem gray or dreary,” Hollis said.

Flower arranging is an art, but that doesn’t mean you should be intimidated by it. Here are four tips from Hollis that amateur orists can use to create beautiful displays of spring and summer color with local nds.

1. USE WHAT’S IN SEASONSpring is a orist’s favorite time of year. For Hollis, that means using lots of seasonal owers, many of which you might nd growing in your yard or along the Fall Creek Trail.

“Use what’s available at the time to always have access to the freshest owers,” Hollis said.

Right now, that means tulips, lilacs, da odils and more. Hollis’ favorite ower, ranunculus, will appear later in the season. Hollis also suggests supplementing what’s growing in your yard with nds from the supermarket or orist shop to create a full, well-rounded arrangement.

2. LOOK ALL AROUND FOR INSPIRATION ough Julie’s Flowers has been in business for the past 16 years, Hollis is always nding new sources of inspiration when it comes to pu ing together arrangements. She encourages you to look around for inspiration, especially in your yard.

“You can use so many things in oral arrangements,” Hollis said. “Try incorporating twigs, vines and wild owers. Or consider adding spring branches and blooms. Dogwood, crabapple, sassafras and redbud all make beautiful additions to arrangements.”

3. THINK ABOUT TEXTURE AND COLORHollis is passionate about owers and design. For her, that means incorporating both color and texture into her arrangements. inking about these two design elements can help DIY decorators add interest to your arrangement. Consider the items you’re using — the texture might be fuzzy, glossy, smooth or rough — and balance the texture by adding an opposite element.

4. TRY A CONTAINER GARDENWhile cut ower arrangements are beautiful, Hollis suggests trying a container garden to add spring color to your home, garden or patio.

According to Hollis, pansies, snapdragons and other owers are beautiful elements in container gardens.

“Container gardens are great to give as gi s,” Hollis said. “People love seeing things grow.”

She also encourages DIYers to get creative when choosing a vessel for their container gardens. As long as something can drain, it can be used for a garden. Right now, Hollis is honing a natural style with a vintage throwback look. ink about your personal style when choosing a container for the garden, and just go with it.

Hollis’ business, Julie’s Flowers of Geist, is a full-service oral design shop specializing in weddings and special events. For more information, visit julies owers.com or call 317-418-4546.

It should be noted that there will be no mystical appearances by fabled screen actors Henry Fonda, Martin Balsam, Lee J. Cobb, Jack Klugman, E.G. Marshall and other cast members who appeared in the landmark 1957 movie of 12 Angry Men. They are now performing in the big theatre in the sky.

Nonetheless, though, the riveting drama that focuses on the deliberations of the 12-person jury during a homicide trial figures to be one of the most powerful and, potentially, most memorable plays to appear on the stage in the 63-year history of Mud Creek Theater (9740 East 86th).

Undaunted by the challenge is director Michelle Moore.

“If we didn’t have the excellent cast of actors, I would be concerned,” she assessed. “It is so important to have the right people. They have to fit together and I believe they do.”

In the seven shows that run from May 2-17, there are only slight variances from the first

performance on CBS Studio One (1954) and the subsequent movie directed by Sidney Lumet three years later.

Perhaps the most notable alteration is the title: 12 Angry Jurors. Mud Creek officials chose to purchase the play that features both sexes on the juror. The award-winning movie featured 12 white male actors.

Williams’ enlists eight female and four male jurors.

“It is an interesting challenge to have the men and women work together,” she noted. “The story is not just from the male perspective.”

And, of course, the Mud Creek version isn’t in black and white as were many film productions in the 1950s. Instead, this adaptation avoids a particular time frame and doesn’t unveil the race, ethnic or gender of the defendant charged with murdering his/her father.

But one similarity is the purposely and witting strategy displayed by Juror No. 8 (as with its theatre and film predecessors,

the Mud Creek play uses numbers and not names for jurors). In the first poll of jurors, No. 8 (Fonda) was the only juror believing there wasn’t enough evidence for a conviction. But No. 8 brilliantly maneuvers his way through a maze of prejudices and misconceptions by his counterparts and eventually, almost miraculously, persuades all to switch their vote to not guilty.

One-time England native and current Lilly scientist Craig Kemp plays the Fonda role.

“I feel very emotional about playing his part,” Kemp said. “Here is a person who was standing alone and confronting people who disagreed with him. I wish I could be that way as a person.”

Kemp, who is aggressively converting his English accent to a non-stereotype American dialect, is not the only Mud Creek actor moved by the potential process of the legal system.

“There may be prejudices involved sometimes, but due process takes over,” assessed Juror No. 3 Anne Phelan, who plays one of the most opinionated characters in demanding a guilty decision. “I get goose bumps thinking about how the system worked here.”

And there have been others who have been moved by the 90-minute drama. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic and third female on Court, was so inspired by 12 Angry Jurors/Men that she entered the legal system.

“You really hope it makes a difference in how we see things,” said Linda Eberharter, the jury foreman.

“We don’t think this will be a life-changing event, but we hope people will not forget the story.”

Tired of winter? Need some color, some life, some sense of spring?

Don’t fret! Until the spring thaw begins, you can brighten your patio or balcony today with containers of fun-filled flowers and plants.

Called container gardening, potting plants in everything from buckets to clay pots may seem simple, but there is an art to planting, maintaining and — if a person is up to it — adding some decorative flair to outdoor areas.

“The secret to containers is simply attention,” said Rita Beck, co-owner with her husband of Rita’s Backyard, a garden center, gift shop and tearoom in Fishers, Ind.

Greenhouse experts have offered these tips to transforming a patio or balcony into a welcoming and pretty environment as the weather warms.

GET YOUR POTS READY There are different schools of thought here, but in general dirt from last year’s plants can be reused as long as it’s not muddy or in bad shape.

“You do not need to replace the dirt,” Beck said. Because containers need to be fertilized regularly as nutrients are continually depleted, it is not necessary to throw out dirt to buy new, freshly fertilized soil.

Whitney Klein, garden center manager at Geist Nursery, also in Fishers, believes in using fresh potting mix at least every two

years. “If it is getting pretty old and crusty, it is time to change it,” she said.

Both Klein and Beck suggest buying a good planting medium — lighter-weight soil that doesn’t clump and turn into mud when watered.

If you need to buy new pots, buy what you prefer: plastic, ceramic, clay or composite material. As long as the pots have sufficient drainage, plants will grow in just about any kind of container. So there is no need to throw out your back moving a fancy ceramic pot.

BUY COOL-WEATHER FLOWERS OR PLANTS IF YOU WANT TO PLANT NOW If you are eager to plant today, before summer sets in, consider buying pansies

or snapdragons, accented with cabbage and kale, which come in nice purple hues. ese plants can withstand cooler temperatures. Your pots can also be accented with branches cut from early-spring-blooming shrubs, such as dogwoods and forsythias, which will add a touch of green, Beck said. is will be a short-term color boost, and they can be replaced with annuals a er Mother’s Day.

IF YOU WANT TO PLANT ONLY ONCE A YEAR, PLANT ANNUALSAnnuals hold up to the heat and are fabulous if maintained, but cannot be planted until about early May, when the temperatures rise. Annuals bloom all season long and can be colorful and cheery. Geraniums are the most common, but there are numerous others, including marigolds, zinnias, sweet peas, sun owers and pink cosmos. “Almost all of the annuals should do well in containers,” Beck said.

MAINTAIN YOUR CONTAINER GARDENMaintenance comes in three forms: watering, fertilizing and “deadheading,” or snipping off dead or dying buds. “The more deadheading is done, the more lush the plants will be,” Beck said.

Water is also a lifeblood for flowers and plants, especially as the weather gets warmer. The amount of water depends on the weather (rain versus sun, obviously), the temperatures, and the amount of sun your flowers and plants are getting daily. “Plants will tell you, ‘I’m thirsty. I’m looking a little sad here,’” Klein said. She recommended soaking the plants every couple of days, depending on the weather.

Klein also recommended adding fertilizer to the water or plants at least once a week. Flowers can also be given a little fertilizer every other day, but be careful not to overfertilize, since it can burn the plants, she said.

GARDEN ACCORDING TO YOUR STYLE AND TIME COMMITMENTIf you can devote time to maintaining an elaborate garden, then you can plant more containers. But if you have only limited time, it’s best not to overdo it. Plants are living, breathing things and need attention. So try to get a plan in place before buying too much or too little at your local greenhouse.

HAVE FUN & BE CREATIVEBored with your brown clay pots? Don’t like the look of plastic? Try planting in paint cans, old boots, Easter baskets or colored pails. (Remember that drainage holes are important and these plants require the same amount of sunlight.) Mix and match plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs. Throw

in a tomato plant with basil and marigolds, flowers with greenery, blues with reds. Try different combinations to add splashes of color and creativity.

“My advice is to roll with it,” Klein said. “The sky is the limit with container gardening.”

Everyone’s family has a story. However, what makes Denisa Nickell Hanania’s family story special is that she decided to share it.

Her latest book, “ e Sharecroppers,” is a stunning piece of historical ction inspired by events experienced by her great-grandparents while working in the co on elds along the Arkansas banks of the mighty Mississippi River nearly a century ago.

“Having a story to tell is like being given a gi that needs sharing,” Hanania said. “ e story almost presents itself, and the author’s job is to put it down on paper clearly so others can see it too. ‘ e Sharecroppers’ was a story I needed to tell — both for the sake of other people and for myself.”

Hanania recently won the Christian Writers Award for Best Fiction for the novel. According to the publisher’s description, the book is “the story of a marriage, of silver dollars, a stolen home and a runaway baby.” Jake and Marina, the novel’s main characters, struggle throughout the years as they raise a family in a world where the years are de ned by the size of the crop and the number of times the levee breaks. And despite the hardships experienced by the book’s characters, “ e Sharecroppers” is an inspiring tale.

“Sharecroppers had a lot of dignity, and in spite of what most of us would think of as horrendous circumstances, they chose to have a good life. Sharecroppers like my great-grandparents never felt sorry for themselves,” Hanania said. “I can remember hearing relatives say, ‘We are not poor. We may not have any money, but we are not poor!’ ere’s a lot of wisdom in choosing to live like that.”

Hanania’s family has since come a long way. ough she now resides “in a noisy house on a quiet street” in Feather Cove, the Purdue University graduate has remained true to her humble roots. Hanania said that it took her “a while to get my head around the idea” of winning the Christian Writers Award.

“I knew the characters would impact readers if I could stay out of their way. My job is to provide a forum for characters to tell their story, to give them center stage,” she said. “Just a few days ago a teacher came up to me and said she was pulling out portions of the book to illustrate great writing to her students. at’s amazing, but it’s also intimidating.”

“ e Sharecroppers” is available in local bookstores and via the author’s website at DenisaHanania.com. Amazon and Barnes and Noble both sell hardback and paper copies in addition to downloadable versions for the Kindle and Nook.

Some people run for fun. Others run for exercise. And still others run to get into shape.

Stacey Draper, a 25-year-old pediatric nurse from Avon, runs for Anthony.

Draper is a member of the group “I Run 4” (often known as “I Run 4 Michael”), a global nonprofit organization that pairs able-bodied runners with children or adults with special needs. The organization has nearly 10,000 members in more than 24 countries, according to its website. Draper, who has been a runner since high school, first heard of the group from the mother of one of her patients. Draper quickly got put on a wait list to be paired with a “buddy,” and she and Anthony Hutchens connected in October, shortly before Draper’s first full marathon.

“This is a mutual encouragement system, and we cheer each other on in our endeavors,” Draper said.

ree-year-old Anthony, of Tracy, Calif., has spastic cerebral palsy, a rare movement disorder where he has muscle spasms without warning. He also cannot eat table food as his body cannot absorb it, so he has been using a feeding tube since November. Anthony has seizures and is currently taking three di erent kinds of seizure medications, said his mom, Kelly Hutchens.

“ e doctor said that Anthony will learn to walk, but he’ll always have a walker,” Hutchens said. “Right now he has a wheelchair.”

Hutchens also joined “I Run 4” so that someone could think of Anthony and run for him and provide inspiration.

e match-up with Draper has been a blessing to the Hutchens family. Draper connects with Anthony almost daily via text messages, or via Facebook — or via old-fashioned mail. When Draper ran in the Indianapolis Marathon in October, her shirt said, “I run for Anthony.”

She also has small beads on her running shoes with Anthony’s name.

Draper frequently takes photos whether she’s at a race or on the treadmill. She’ll send them to Anthony or post them on Facebook. Kelly Hutchens sends her photos of Anthony riding the school bus or playing with his sisters.

Draper also has sent race medals, T-shirts and other gi s to Anthony and his sisters, who are 4 and 8 years old.

“We get excited when she sends a package, and we’ll tell Anthony, ‘ is is from Stacey,’” Hutchens said.

e buddies have not met in person yet due to geography, but the Hutchens family hopes to meet Draper one day, and vice versa.

Since the two buddies were paired, Draper has run one full marathon, and numerous smaller races. She will run the Geist Half Marathon in May.

“Basically Anthony runs the races with me,” Draper said. “You need that encouragement if you are having a hard time, if your legs hurt and your lungs hurt and everything hurts. While not the same [as what Anthony is going through], running is incredibly di cult, but we both have to be strong and push out to the nish line.”

At nearly every country club, you hear members complaining incessantly about slow play. But not at The Club at Putnam Park. That’s because some of its members are wheeling around at speeds approaching 140 mph. Not in golf carts, though. This is a motorsports country club.

While it’s in rural Putnam County, you won’t find a dirt track, demolition derbies, Dale Jr. T-shirts or confederate flags. The club is built around Putnam Park, a world-class racetrack located only 50 minutes southwest of Indianapolis. In addition to access to a world-class track, members of The Club also get to relax in a clubhouse equal to those offered by the finest golf clubs in Indianapolis.

Putnam Park is a 1.8-mile asphalt track made up of 10 turns with a half-mile straightaway where members’ cars can reach speeds in excess of 140 mph. (I can attest to this!) The track was specifically designed with safety in mind, because it is, for the most part, surrounded by flat, grass fields with very few opportunities to make contact with any obstacles. If you unexpectedly leave the track, you’ll end up speeding through a grassy field rather than hitting a wall. This makes for an ideal circuit for amateur drivers who enjoy an occasional adrenaline rush and want to test the limits of their cars and their driving abilities.

Putnam Park came to be in 1990, when Richard Diasio and son Chris Diasio, a Zionsville resident and current owner of the track, started looking for a location to build a private race track. They settled on Putnam County because of its proximity to Indianapolis and the fact that there were few zoning restrictions.

When completed in 1991, the track became — and remains today — a frequent practice facility for various world-class professional racing teams, including Indy 500 teams, Indy Lights teams and the current Audi Motorsports team. Last year, former F-1 and Indy 500 driver Rubens Barrichello practiced at Putnam Park in advance of the Grand-Am Rolex Series race at the IMS.

The track also is a favorite venue for various local and regional sports car clubs and for corporate outings.

DR. MATT PRIDDY of Carmel is a local physician who started running his Porsche Boxster Spyder at Putnam Park as a member of the local Porsche Club. His car is pretty much a stock Spyder. In fact, the day I met Priddy, he had driven his Spyder to the office. He decided to become a member of The Club at Putnam Park after he found himself wanting more track time and greater convenience than he was able to get as a member of the Porsche Club. Dr. Priddy liked the idea of having a country-club atmosphere and camaraderie at a place where he felt safe putting his Porsche through its paces.

JUSTIN TYSDAL, another Carmel resident, was first introduced to Putnam Park when he bought a Ducati motorcycle from a local dealer who would occasionally rent Putnam Park for customer days. He soon decided he wanted more time on the track, so he became a member of The Club. Tysdal still runs his motorcycle at Putnam Park and has added a modified BMW Z-3 to his stable. The day I was at the track, he was having a great father-and-son day as he and his 70-year-old dad were taking turns running his Z-3.

KURT FAZEKAS, a Geist-area resident and his 81-year-old father, Dale, are both members of The Club at Putnam Park. Dale was a two-time national champion of the SCCA. Kurt has a new 911 Porsche Turbo but still drives at Putnam Park one of the special 944 Turbo race cars that his father raced as a member of the Porsche factory team.

To more fully utilize this facility, Chris and his father got the idea of creating a unique motor-sports country club atmosphere built around the Putnam Park track. e Diasios spent in excess of $2 million to upgrade the facilities. e renovations included a new clubhouse and a new, fully functioning garage area (think gasoline alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway). e Club just started construction on an additional building that will provide 10 garages that members can rent year-round to store their cars and equipment.

e clubhouse includes a club room with a bar topped by exotic granite, numerous at-screen TVs, and men’s and women’s locker rooms with travertine-walled showers and private restrooms (think Bridgewater Club or e Hawthorns).

Just like the nest golf or tennis country clubs, e Club at Putnam Park also o ers its members high-level instruction from experienced professionals. Unlike golf clubs, though, Putnam Park’s professional instructors happen to be professional race-car drivers — and their services are included as part of the membership.

Putnam Park began o ering memberships in 2011 and today has about 50 members made up of many people from central Indiana. However, nearly half of the members live more than two and a half hours from the track.

e track is available to members 140 days of the year. Some members use the same cars they drive to the o ce in (think Porsche and BMWs instead of Ferrari or Lamborghini), while others bring out more exotic models. e common element for all members is the desire to continue to improve as drivers and to push their cars, irrespective of the type, to its limit.

A few days ago, club member Kurt Fazekas graciously invited me to ride shotgun with him on a few hot laps around the track in his 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and his older Porsche 945 Turbo. e rides were exhilarating and eye-opening.

In the 911, we began from a standing start somewhere near the beginning of the half-mile straightaway. By the time Fazekas began braking for the rst corner, we were doing north of 120 mph. I thought that was fast — until we had time to pick up some speed during the rst lap, soon to sail down the straightaway at more than 140 mph! (I maintained a rm grip on the door handle during the entire time.)

If you’re interested in driving fast or learning to drive fast in a safe environment and with the amenities of a true country club, take a look at e Club at Putnam Park. For membership information call Chris Diasio at 317-559-1500. Like most country clubs, e Club o ers several di erent membership levels that Chris can discuss with you.

Geist resident Joe Crump and his sister, Kristina Wagner, have created a documentary exploring the WWII internment camps in the United States. What began with Wagner’s thesis from a recently earned history degree grew

into a full-scale documentary. “I began my initial research online and came across an anonymous posting a er a piece on Japanese internment. e posting simply read, ‘What about the Germans who were also interned?’” shares Wagner. Wagner had not heard of German or Italian internment, only of Japanese internment.

Upon completion of her thesis, Wagner shared it with her brother, Joe. “ e historical signi cance and its relevance that still holds true today struck me as a worthwhile project and one of urgency since these internees are aging and dying,” says Crump. e lm explores the li le-known history of the U.S. internment camps from WWII through the voices of those who were detainees. One of these voices is that of Geist resident Anneliese “Lee” Krauter. Geist residents may be more aware of the German internment experience thanks to Krauter, who penned her memoir, “From the Heart’s Closet: A Young Girl’s World War II Story,” in 2005.

Wagner was connected to Krauter through a series of contacts while doing her research. “Anneliese’s story is a wonderful sensory perception of her life and reminds us that a widespread disregard of personal rights continues to be a part of our government’s timetable,” states Wagner.

Upon speaking with Krauter about her experience, and having read her book myself, her memory of the camp and ability to recall details and feelings from that time when she was only 7 years old is incredible. Krauter has architectural renderings of the layout of the Crystal City Internment Camp, located in Crystal City, Texas, where she and her family lived for seven months before being repatriated back to Germany in 1944. e camp was divided into German and Japanese internees quarters. While not segregated, the ethnic groups didn’t mingle much. Krauter vividly remembers most details from her seven months at the camp before being repatriated to Germany. Viewing her father’s FBI le, it’s amazing that he maintained such a love and loyalty to the United States a er all he and his family endured.

e lm gives a respectful nod to those who lost everything but their lives; most of them were American citizens. e U.S. even searched South America for Japanese and Germans, needing them for cha el in the prisoner exchange. In Peru alone, 2,000 Japanese were basically kidnapped and brought to the U.S. camps. e documentary covers lesser-known aspects, such as these facts of the internment experience, preserving this history and educating viewers.

One issue that bubbles to the surface of this lm for discussion is the fact that the U.S. government has formally apologized to the Japanese (with super cial restitution) and to the Italian internees, but nothing has been done to formally apologize to the German internees. e judiciary commi ee in Congress has repeatedly

ignored the oversight. e German internees do not wish for compensation, but an acknowledgement and an apology would be nice, since their experience has been swept under the rug.

e documentary, “Children of Internment,” is currently being screened across the country by request and is being submi ed to lm festivals, such as the Heartland Film Festival. e hope is to have the lm viewed and to open up a conversation of how relevant this history is today. ere are lessons here that should be learned so that history doesn’t repeat itself, but unfortunately immigration issues and detainment are prevalent today.

Bringing to the awareness that this type of “enemy alien” mentality still exists today, one former internee states in the lm, “Not all Germans were Nazis, just as not all those who practice Islam are terrorists.” It begs the question, what haven’t we learned?

To learn more, please visit childreno nternment.com. Krauter’s book is available on Amazon.com and theschatzipress.com and is on the shelf at Big Hat Books in Broad Ripple.

Marching 26 miles through the desert with a backpack full of bricks isn’t easy, but Bill Vernon said it’s a lot more fun with friends.

“It’s completely crazy — that’s part of the enjoyment right there,” he said. “If you are in a group and you know everyone else is feeling the same…that’s when you can either fall back into yourself or you can kind of step up and help the people around you — cheer them up and keep them going. at’s what we do.”

e “we” is Team Ninja, a Carmel-based athletic group founded by Vernon and four friends in 2011. e all-volunteer team’s roster has since grown to about 1,500 members, with interests ranging from hardcore obstacle-course racing to 5K walks.

Team Ninja co-founder Bill Vernon got to meet an actual

survivor of the Bataan Death March from World War II at the

Bataan Memorial Death March in New Mexico earlier this year.

Vernon said the main idea is encouraging people to get active and to do it together.

“People ask me, ‘What is Team Ninja?’” he said. “I kind of call it an outdoor adventure club. Our mo o is get up and do something new. We’re all about trying new things.”

e ve founding members of Team Ninja met through a martial-arts class, and Vernon said they formed a team to get a registration discount on the inaugural Indianapolis Spartan Race — a grueling competition perhaps best described as an obstacle-course race. He said the group had a lot of fun with the team concept and took it to other events; the team grew in a grassroots fashion from there.

“It kind of snowballed,” said Vernon.

Team Ninja has an open membership policy — people can apply to join via the group website or Facebook page. While small donations are requested for some events, there are no fees, and Vernon said any excess funds are given to Riley Children’s Hospital.

“ ere is no membership fee or initiation or anything like that,” said Vernon. “All we ask is that you participate.”

Vernon’s recent jaunt through the desert was for the Bataan Memorial Death March in New Mexico, a trip he shared with roughly 20 members of Team Ninja. He said they’re looking forward to the Geist Half Marathon in May, and are expecting a strong showing.

“I’m hoping to get somewhere between 30 and 50 runners or marchers,” he said. “We will probably have a group that will do the half marathon, another that will do the 5K and a large group that will ruck it — they’ll have a backpack with some weight in it, and they’ll march the half marathon. I’ll be leading that.”

Rucking bricks are typically wrapped in duct tape to protect the backpack, and Bill Vernon said the hikers get creative when it comes to decorating those bricks.

Vernon is owner of Omega Design Studios, a Carmel-based web development company he founded in 1995. He said that part of the appeal of extreme racing is that it o ers a variety of challenges, adding that runners o en become quite a ached to the paving bricks they’ve lugged.

“Once you’ve done one of these events with a brick, it will stay with you forever,” he said. “I have the original six bricks from that rst race on my shelf. It’s something I’m very proud of.”

Vernon said he’s also proud of how Team Ninja has grown, saying it’s been time well spent.

“It’s a huge time commitment, but I love doing it, and I love what it’s doing for the community,” he said.

Team Ninja can be found on Facebook or through its website: teamninja.org.

Bill Vernon is a fan of backpacking with a load of paving bricks, a sport that’s

often called “rucking.”

Writers / Rachel Quade & Chalene Braun

Live horse racing, fantastic food and exciting gaming action all within 30 minutes? Your Girls About Town set out to search for that perfect trifecta of fun and found it at Hoosier Park Racing and Casino in Anderson.

We started our evening at the Homestretch Steakhouse, a fine dining restaurant situated on a tiered terrace with a spectacular view of the entire track. With its wall of windows, there’s not a bad seat in the house!

This classic American steakhouse offered us one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in the Indianapolis area. For appetizers, we had seared ahi tuna, jumbo lump crab cakes and stuffed mushroom caps. The mushroom caps were simply the best we

have ever enjoyed; don’t bet against them! For our entree, we indulged in a classic filet and lobster. It was the perfect marriage of land and sea. Incredible doesn’t do it justice; both were prepared to perfection! Another winner was the dry-aged Tomahawk long-bone ribeye. Boasting a mellow taste that comes from the dry-aging process, these ribeyes were abundant in marbling, rich in flavor and sure to please even the most discriminating steak connoisseur. We were beyond impressed with our servers, the spectacular views and the mouth-watering food and cocktails. Oh…and since grandma said there’s always room for dessert…we indulged there, too. We crossed our dining finish line with the red velvet cheesecake and crème brûlée. Well worth the calories!

After dinner, we headed outside on a beautiful night to watch the harness racing

up close and personal. Nothing says you’re at a racetrack quite like hearing the bugler belt out the familiar “call to post” two minutes prior to each race. As you watch the horses enter the gate, you can’t help but feel the energy and excitement! There’s nothing like a night of heart-pounding racing action!

Live horse racing runs from April to mid-November. You can place your bet at the window or from the comfort of your table with your server’s assistance. Want to be a better bettor? Pick up a program and a tip sheet, and look for even more information on conveniently situated monitors. If you really want to get the inside track on the horses, go check them out at the stables. When the ponies aren’t running at the park, you can watch and bet via simulcast at Hoosier Park.

GIDDY UP TO HOOSIER PARK

Looking for some more thrills? Hoosier Park’s casino offers 2,000 of the newest slots and hottest e-table games in the Midwest. Whether it’s the Wheel of Fortune or the hot new Wizard of Oz slot, there’s gaming action for everyone. The week before we were there, one Hoosier Park regular won $100,000 on Friday night, then came back the next night and won another $100,000! How did he do it? Friday night he won on the $100 Double Diamond slot machine, and Saturday night he won on video poker. Now, that’s a good weekend!

Like any casino, one thing we love is that you can’t tell whether it’s three in the afternoon or three in the morning. Lose track of time, and let yourself get caught up in the action! With all of the lights, bells, whistles and action surrounding your senses, if you can’t have fun in a casino, you just don’t want to have fun!

Not a gambler? Go check out the awesome entertainment at Hoosier Park. Whether it’s outside at the Music Center or inside the all-new Terrace Showroom, you are sure to see why Hoosier Park was voted the best concert venue in 2013 by Midwest Gaming and Travel magazine. You can catch some great shows here! From Cheap Trick to The Beach Boys to The Go-Go’s to your favorite country stars, they’ve all played here. This summer, you can see Clint Black (May 16), Heart (Aug. 1), Little Big Town (Aug. 9) and The Doobie Brothers (Aug. 30). Purchase tickets through the Hoosier Park box office or Ticketmaster.

Hoosier Park also presents other great live entertainment. For the most up-to-date event information, go to hoosierpark.com, or download the free app on iTunes.

It’s tough to really capture the entire Hoosier Park experience in one article, given the many restaurants and bars, ranging from fine dining at Homestretch to more casual choices, such as Johnny Rockets and Naked TCHOPSTIX. The Double R Bar offers some unique and exciting cocktails, and at the Pegasus

Lounge, you can enjoy $1 beers on Friday nights. Cheers to cheap drinks and loose slots!

Want to schedule your next group event? This night is sure to be a winner! Just call Hoosier Park at 1-800-526-7223 and ask for Guest Services. The staff can even set you up with a car and driver. Private rooms are also available to make your event a sure bet!

We had an unforgettable experience at

Hoosier Park Racing and Casino and saved ourselves from having to get on a long flight to Vegas! We want to give a huge shout out and thank you to our Hoosier Park staff hosts—Grant Scharton, Becky Young, Amy Whitler and Jahnae Erpenbach—who showed us why the Indianapolis Business Journal recently ranked Hoosier Park Racing and Casino as the Indianapolis area’s most popular attraction for the fourth year in a row. If you want to win, place and show, giddy on up to Hoosier Park!
