This is definitely not your father’s law firm. Young and deeply embedded in their Geist community, they resonate with committed energy that’s packaged with experience in a broad band of legal issues and a prestigious client roster to boot. This legal eagles group at Lewis and Wilkins LLP, or LAW, casts aside any pre-determined images of stuffy, hard to approach solicitors.

They operate in a notorious office space (think Schrenker),which they have turned to the good side where laughter reigns and clients feel welcome to show up any time. It’s the best of all worlds as this firm knows exactly why they chose to set up shop in their Geist backyard and how their expertise fits the fabric of this community. They have just celebrated their one-year anniversary in a compact, but beautifully redesigned office location.

This team of practicing attorneys will quickly refer to Geist locales such as Mama Bear’s (just steps away), Bella Vita Ristorante and Scotty’s Lakehouse as their conference room “C” where they meet with their clients and friends. Clients love the fact that they don’t have to drive all the way downtown to get advice on personal or business legal matters.

Living and working in one’s own neighborhood …

“This is a great area to live, work and play. It was a no-brainer to open an office here,” says the affable John Lewis.

Aside from the stress reliever element, Lewis will tell you straight up what LAW and their clients have in common. “There are winners and losers in business, as in life, and we are successful only if our clients are

successful. We help them reach their goals,” he states. “Our clients consider us as part of their team. While some law firms put a priority on the number of clients, we think that places their business first, not the client,” Lewis adds. The LAW firm represents individuals, families, businesses and government offices including the State of Indiana which recently brought LAW in to assist with the State Fair tragedy.

Jim Joven and Steve Koers, both Of Counsel, were involved with Lewis in opening the new office in the Geist area away from the hub of their downtown firm (LAW has offices in South Bend, downtown Indianapolis, and Fishers). Partner Paul Mullin, raised in Geist, operates the downtown Indianapolis LAW office and was a driving force in the decision to open the Geist LAW location.

“This is our community. We all live here. We go to church at St. Simon and Holy Spirit. Our kids go to school here and we coach here. Why not work here?” said Koers. “John and I have

known each other for 16 years, and have both served as attorneys for the Catholic Archdiocese,” Koers added. “We were lucky to have mentors in Bill Wood and Jim Tuohy, who believed that clients are also your friends. That relationship allows us to serve them in all matters of their lives, and it instills in our clients a deeper trust to work with us on their important matters. We hold true to this same thought process.”

Amy Becker handles the large task of serving as the office manager with the same warmth as her bosses. Kelly McKillip is their legal assistant and, they have just welcomed a brand new attorney into the fold, Josh Martin of Fishers.

“Our firm represents a wide variety of clients. Whether it’s a personal will or complex business matters, each client

gets the same superb quality of work and our sincere attention to their needs,” said Becker. At the Geist location, LAW attorneys assist in various areas including estate planning, insurance, business and corporate work.

Away from the office, Lewis, Koers and Joven enjoy baseball, basketball and football coaching assignments at St. Simon, the Fieldhouse, Oaklandon Youth Organization, and Fall Creek Little League. Lewis is President of the Lawrence Redevelopment Commission charged with bringing new businesses into the Lawrence and Geist. Koers is entering his second year as President of the St. Simon Parish Council. Koers also is one of the founding owners of

Indianapolis’ award-winning Sun King Brewing Company. Joven serves as Chairman of the Board

of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

It’s nice to know a friendly and experienced law firm in your own backyard. As I said at the start of this story, they are not your father’s law firm, but they are the attorneys you will want on your side should you ever need one!

J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. She serves as the Executive Director of the WriteStuff Writers

Conferences and Events.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? Sure the hustle and bustle can be fun, but what happens when the excitement of the season gives way to stress and exhaustion? As a yoga teacher, I encourage my students to make time for relaxation every day. That can be hard work on a good day and almost impossible during December. Here are some tips to minimize the stress of the holidays.

Maintain as much of your normal routine as possible. Try to keep to

your regular sleep schedule. Follow an evening of too much food and drink with a day or two of a balanced, healthy diet. Don’t abandon your workouts completely. A few minutes each day of any physical activity will go a long way.

Play with the kids or walk the dog. These activities help lower your

blood pressure while they bring a smile to your face. Any opportunity to be with

people you love in a casual environment should relax you.

Take a tea or hot chocolate break. Sipping a warm beverage will slow

you down. Ten or fifteen minutes to enjoy a cup of tea while you people watch or sit by a fire could be just what you need. If it’s close to bedtime, choose decaf or warm milk.

Use aromatherapy, put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball then

put the cotton ball in a small plastic bag. Leave it in the car, your desk, or carry it in your purse. When your stress level goes up, take a few quick sniffs. It’s guaranteed to change your mood. Lavender and chamomile will relax you. Use peppermint as a pick-me-up. Geranium or sandalwood oils are perfect when you’re under emotional stress.

Be still and follow your breath. You can do this just about anywhere. Sit

with your back tall and bring both feet to the floor if possible. Close the eyes. As you exhale, envision the breath moving down the spine from the top of the head to the tip of the tailbone. Inhale to bring the breath up the spine. Repeat for 10-20 breaths. Instant refreshment!

Laugh often! Laughter is a great stress reliever. It’s fun, it’s free, and

it’s contagious. Let the laughter flow.

When you’re frazzled from all the holiday hoopla take a minute to remember what the season’s really about. Happy holidays!

Lawrence Township School Foundation Launches Campaign to Help Fund Public SchoolBy Ellen Robinson

The Lawrence Township School Foundation has launched the Power of Community campaign as an effort to rally public support for public schools in the form of financial contributions. With decreased funding for public education and increased student needs, we need everyone to ensure that all of our kids in Lawrence Township Schools have the resources they need to excel. We are asking every member of our community to consider allocating $10/month to this effort (that’s just 2-3 trips to Starbucks). If everyone committed to this, we could raise $13 million annually for our public schools.

Funds raised through this effort will go back into the classrooms to fund mentoring and tutoring programs, grants for technology, the arts and music, and to ensure our kids have 21st Century skills such as critical thinking, inquiry, collaboration, innovation and creativity that are so critical to success in our growing global economy. Sign up today by visiting www.msdltf.org and clicking on the “News & Events > Join the Power of Community” links. For more information, contact Ellen Robinson at 317-423-8302 or [email protected].

Goodwin credits the improvements made this year in anticipation of the 2011 NSA World Series hosted in late July. “We made several improvements to our fields and the NSA took note of them,” said Goodwin. Only four parks in eleven states were recognized for this high honor. Goodwin credits Joe and Jackie Hussey, Aaron Woosley, Brad Baumgartner, Mick Magar, Dave Desplinter and Chris Rohr for laying most of the ground work for this award.

This I know: Opinions do count.

Those who know this man say he is in fact a quiet man. One who has taken seriously his role in public service. His reputation bears the fruit of being a problem solver; someone who gets people to come together to talk calmly about issues they openly don’t agree on. He’s a family man who loves kids and actually goes to where they gather without publicity to read to them, encouraging them to think about what they might want to do with their lives, their dreams. He never breaks a promise and sincerely believes that being involved in public service is a privilege and a 24-7 responsibility for all elected office holders.

In 1990, James (Jim) Merritt began his journey as one of the youngest to be sworn in as an Indiana State Senator.

“Looking back on that day at just 31 years of age, I realize now how innocent I was at that time. There are a certain amount of bells and whistles that can indeed be distracting in public life. If you keep your feet planted and your actions based on what really matters, you can get things accomplished for the people who elected you to serve them,” he said reflectively.

Sitting across from this man, you absolutely feel the energy and experience Merritt brings to the table on multiple government issues. He has become a key team player in Indiana’s economic development built on legislation that encourages job growth. He serves as the chair of the Senate Majority Caucus where his leadership has helped Indiana to pass four consecutive balanced budgets.

He is chairman of the Indiana Senate Utilities & Technology Committee. He is also the ranking member on Homeland Security, Transportation and Veteran Affairs. Merritt authored Indiana’s Safe Haven Law after an infant was abandoned by its mother and died outside an eastside hospital. This Law allows a parent to drop off a child anonymously with no questions asked within 45 days of birth at any hospital, police or fire station.

Passionate about preserving Indiana history, he authored a book, Passing the Torch: Preserving Indiana’s Heritage. This book is filled with wonderful information on Indiana’s landmarks, memorials, treasured artifacts, and the State Archives. He also serves as a member of the board of trustees for the Indiana Historical Society and the board of directors of the Friends of Indiana Archives.

When asked about future efforts, Merritt was thoughtful in

outlining his personal priorities. Simply put they include: Expanding the Safe Haven Law through education and community partnership; Developing his Merritt Readers program in schools; Working to solve the abandoned homes situation, focusing on what Merritt calls, the Good Samaritan Law, which will allow property owners to have a hand in the care of maintaining the outside property appearance of abandoned homes in their own neighborhood without penalty, until the home can be sold or fixed up by the mortgage holder; And, getting out to meet people in his newly shifted district (31), which now includes much of Fishers.

When asked if he has higher aspirations for public office he replied, “I am focused on my job at hand.”

Merritt is vice president of corporate affairs for the Indiana Railroad Company. He and his wife Kelley, a nurse, have two daughters (Abby and Jennifer), and a son (Will). His daughters attend Hanover College and his son is a freshman at DePauw University.

One last opinion was offered up on Jim Merritt that I thought should be shared: “Jim’s a great example of excellence in public service, but he’s not so great as a politician ….” In today’s world, this quote speaks volumes for the quiet man who has a clear understanding of the office he holds and the people he serves.

Last month, a 73 year-old man and his wife were pulling up to park at the Community Health Rehabilitation Center in the Geist Station strip mall when he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. His Ford Taurus jumped the curb, smashed through the glass of Vern Roach’s Edward Jones office and continued through the wall into The Bakery at Geist and stopped about two feet inside of the Geist Station Animal Hospital.

“All I heard was a crashing sound and when I looked up it was all moving in slow motion, at least that’s how I remember it,” said Ron Woods, owner of The Bakery at Geist, as he stood in his gutted space draped with plastic and broken furniture.

Woods memory of the event is sketchy at best. The trauma of seeing his struggling one year old business being decimated in a matter of three seconds by a freak accident is hard for him to wrap his hands around. Sweet Treat Boutique, just around the corner from Woods, gave him temporary quarters to sell bread and some pastry items. But lack of business forced Woods to close on weekdays and open only on weekends, setting up a temporary farmers’ market-style table on the sidewalk in front by a large red dumpster staged for rebuilding.

“Our kitchen was unharmed, it was open within 20 hours of the accident. We just couldn’t sell out of the front which was terrible for business.”

Neighbors Vern Roach and Mary Desotell were both taken to the hospital for treatment. Roach was cut on the head when a light fixture fell from the ceiling, resulting in 10 stitches. Desotell was sitting at her desk when the car rammed through the front door, pushing her backwards and underneath the desk trapping her for a few moments.

“I don’t know how I avoided being hit,” said Woods shaking his head. He was seated facing the wall where the car came crashing through. Tire marks burnt into the flooring from the speed and heat of the tires end where Woods was sitting at his computer. A broken

chair serves as a reminder of how lucky Woods was to survive the crash.

The grim reality of the accident is the real victim of the crash: The Bakery at Geist.

“We’ve been doing our best to make this work and we really need the support of the community,” said Woods. “Having to deal with this now on top of the struggles we were already going through as a fledgling business might be too much for us to overcome.”

The Bakery at Geist just reopened on November 15.

As the NBA lockout continues and Colts fans wonder what happened, there is one sports team in Indianapolis preparing for their first trip to the National Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Championships: The Naptown Roller Girls.

Founded in 2006, the team has gained national attention for their legions of passionate fans, explosive offense, and fostering of sisterhood and teamwork. Girls drive from as far away as Fort Wayne to be a part of this team. Leagues have creeped up all across Indiana since Naptown’s inception, giving women not only a place to get some exercise, but a place to make lifelong friendships as well.

The Naptown Roller Girls recently hosted a Regional tournament, defeating teams from Cincinnati and Detroit to place third and get a shot at the National Competition, “Continental Divide and Conquer,” which took place

November 11th-13th.

The Geist area has provided roots for two of these talented women.

“Dora the Destroyer” (aka Megan Gill) grew up in Geist and graduated from Lawrence Central, while “Piper Sonic” (aka Stacie Pillar) teaches at Lawrence Central.

“My family and I moved to the Geist area when I was going into the 5th grade. I actually found it hard growing up in that area, partially because I was the new kid and really just wanted to fit in,” Gill says. “When I got to the Geist area, I got confused and just wanted to try to be like everyone else so I’d fit in and make friends easily. I really struggled with getting back to my quirky ways until high school.”

Gill, who has earned the nickname “the Gazelle from Hell” for her agility, speed, and balance on skates, found her way to the Naptown Roller Girls a little over two years ago.

Pillar moved to the Geist area four years ago and is newer to the squad, having joined earlier this year. “My entire adolescence was spent in a roller skating rink, and when I saw the girls whippin’ around the track I longed for the feeling,” she says.

“A few years passed and in August of 2010, we had our first child. I kept active during the pregnancy, but soon after our son was born I felt really anxious to do… something… to get moving again and feel more like myself,” Pillar says. “In the end, joining the Naptown squad was where my heart took me. I contacted the recruitment coordinators and tried out in December. My first practice was in early January 2011.

Pillar has risen through the ranks of Naptown’s set-up, moving from the traveling squad, the Third Alarms, up to the Warning Belles (the B-team), and is an alternate on the Tornado Sirens. Pillar is considered a dangerous “jammer,” or the skater able to score points.

Gill has some simple advice for young girls. “Stay strong. Do what you want to do. Hold your ground, stand up for what you believe in. If I could go back, I wouldn’t have changed from my 4th grade self into the mold I tried to squeeze into in 5th grade and on, cause when you’re older, you’ll realize those ‘popular’ girls really weren’t that cool and you don’t want to be like them anyway,” she says.

By the way, there is a junior roller derby league in Indianapolis. They accept girls ages 8-17 and are always looking for new skaters. It’s not quite as hard-hitting as its adult counterpart leagues.

They can be found at www.indianapolisjuniorderby.com.

You can catch Dora, Piper, and the rest of the Naptown Tornado Sirens during live coverage of the WFTDA Championships on www.wftda.com. You can also see the ladies live December 17th at the Pepsi Coliseum for a home match against the Tornado Sirens (Toronto). Ticket information can be found at www.naptownrollergirls.com.

Actor Dan Aykroyd caused quite a stir last month when his motor coach pulled into the Payless Liquor Store in Fishers. Hundreds of fans lined up outside the store waiting to meet the well-known actor and purchase an autographed bottle of his newly released Crystal Head Vodka.

Aykroyd and his artist friend John Alexander are co-founders of Crystal Head Vodka. They were inspired after researching the Legend of the 13 Crystal Skulls.

In 2007, they came up with the concept for Crystal Head Vodka. The heads are thought to offer spiritual power and enlightenment to those who possess them, standing not as a symbol of death, but of life. This “Pure Spirit” is the result of an integral process of creating a uniquely pure and clean vodka by avoiding the use of any additives in its creation.

Aykroyd also signed copies of his brother’s book that he forwarded, “The History of Ghosts.” Ironically, Aykroyd’s father witnessed seances for years and kept family books on the subject which is what the movie Ghostbusters was based upon.

FRESH • LOCAL • FLOWERS

The SmartMoney at the Wall Street Journal recommends shoppers buy from a local florist who will actually deliver their flowers rather than using an online broker who will typically take a sizable cut and charge an excessive service fee.

Shop local, get what you really want, and save.

It's really that simple!

Thirty-three year-old John Riggins is a Noblesville firefighter with a passion for music. On nights that he is not on call with the fire department, he plays country tunes with fellow musicians in the “Mule Barn Band” at a few select venues around the area.

Recently, he had the opportunity to perform in front of a crowd he always wanted to play for at Casler’s Kitchen & Bar, the Fishers restaurant/sports bar that features live music weekly. After some encouragement, he stopped in, introduced himself, and asked if he could play a short set some night. Owner Rosa Fonseca agreed and was glad she did. “He was good and people liked him, so we thought we would try him out a couple more times.”

Fonseca also says they have been considering adding a country music weekend once a month at Casler’s. Riggins for one would enjoy being a part of the lineup.

The country crooner says his mom bought him a guitar when he was a kid but he never really picked it up until a few years ago. Now he’s hooked and jokes that his mom may finally see a return on her investment, after all these years.

Riggins says being on the job as a firefighter is much like performing on stage. “It is a rush the entire time and your adrenalin never stops,” says Riggins.

So it seems as though the man who finds satisfaction in saving families from fire, also enjoys firing up a crowd with some good country music on a cold winter night.

You can email [email protected] for more information and booking dates for John Riggins and the Mule Barn Band.

Business SpotlightWhen Sherri Meyer, president of Property Group One, LTD, chose the name Watercolors, she envisioned a European Country French community with a colorful ambience. Sherri and her building partner and daughter, Nicole Newkirk, are building their custom condo homes community just north of 96th Street on Olio Road. The name Watercolors is a good fit, as this lovely community has 3 large bodies of water with ever-spraying crystal clear water fountains that come alive at night with rich colors.

In the home building industry, it’s rare when a mother and daughter share the same professional career path as custom builders.

So how did it all begin?

Sherri was a realtor in the 80s and worked with lots of builders. One day, while browsing in a builders’ magazine, she read about a new company, Epcon Communities, that had just begun building custom lifestyle condo homes with a design plan that was far different from other condominium builders anywhere. By the end of the story, this experienced real estate agent was eager to learn more about a builder who was paying attention to shifting homeowner lifestyle trends, creating well-appointed common spaces, plus supplying the advantage of minimal homeowner maintenance, which granted residents the one thing they needed most: Time spent enjoying life.

Her research would lead to the formation of her own company, Property Group One, LTD, and immediately, she signed on with Epcon Communities as a franchise owner. Epcon is the number one builder of ranch condos in the country.

Flash forward a few years

Sherri’s daughter, Nicole Newkirk, was studying marketing at the New York Fashion Institute, but decided that she really was more drawn to the world of real estate. Nicole went with her

heart, switching from fashion to selling properties. A good student, she achieved her realtor’s license and then plunged feet first into the fast and furious New York real estate market.

In 2004, Nicole decided to move home and join her mother’s business. Shortly thereafter, they learned that her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer just as she was develop-ing the plans to build Watercolors, a new concept with 4-homes attached in a pinwheel design. Nicole formed a partnership with her mother as director of sales and marketing within Property Group One, LTD.

“Nicole brings a youthful approach to our company through the sales end, as well as her ability to develop all the many aspects of our Watercolors website content. She created and manages our successful website seminars (called webinars),” said Sherri.

“It was an easy decision to get involved

in this unique project and, to be there in person to support my mom through her cancer journey,” Nicole added. Today, Sherri Meyer is cancer free and this creative partnership, along with Betsy Bly, sales consultant, and Jeff Fraker, director of construction, is excited to announce the expansion of Watercolors with 18 new free-standing condo homes that include full condominium services and maintenance. This is indeed a new concept in building free-standing condo homes.

“Our designers work closely with buyers to create a living space that fits their needs. And, all homes will be ENERGY STAR certified,” said Sherri.

“We are ahead of the curve with the highest of energy standards for our homes,” adds Nicole. “We don’t have to build this way. We just do.”

These new models, ranging from 1500 to 2000 square feet, offer the possibility of expanding to nearly 3,000 square feet. They include private outdoor living courtyards with window views that allow an abundance of wonderful natural lighting from every view. The interior of these new models are designed for openness with attention to detail that is sure to put the expression WOW back into your vocabulary.

The well-cared-for Clubhouse includes a heated swimming pool, private entry, and a fully equipped exercise area.

Homeowners can relax with family or friends in a beautifully decorated common area that serves as an extension to all Watercolor homeowners. Equipped with a full kitchen, it can be reserved by any owner for private parties as well.

Besides their already busy schedules, Sherri, Nicole and Betsy also share a hobby. They are involved with international and national dog show competitions. Their show dogs include Afghan Hounds, Italian Greyhounds and Border and Norwich Terriers. If you want to hear some very interesting stories, just ask them about their travels and their dog showing experiences. Needless to say, at Watercolors pets are most welcome!

Reservations are now open for securing your lot and your model preference.
