Gender Identity

Taryn Rae Vest

What is gender? How an individual identifies and presents themselves, usually masculine or feminine, but the term is a spectrum, so you can be both, neither, or even somewhere in between.

Not genderGender is not based on biology, it is based on how someone identifies and expresses themself.

So if a girl says she is a girl, no matter her biology, she is a girl.

What is transgender?Transgender is a term for people whose gender does not match their assigned gender at birth.

Assigned gender at birth usually aligns with someone’s biology, but not always.

TransitioningWhen a transgender person begins to transition between their designated gender and their true gender.

MTFMale-to-female

A term used for transgender women. They are designated at birth male, but are transitioning to be female.

FTMFemale-to-male

A term used by transgender men. Their designated genders at birth were female, but now they are transitioning to be male.

Intersex

An individual who was born with both biological sexes. This usually causes the person to have a forced gender which is not accurate. Invasive surgery usually begins at a young age to force the child to conform to one sex.

PronounsPronouns are very important, and if someone has told you their preferred pronouns, it is important to try your very best to use them.
