II Current Procedure for Printing of Publications and Reproduction of Documents At present the following procedure is applied to the printing, of publications and reproduction and distribution of documents. 1, As,a rule, annual publications are typographed; offset impression is used ^ for protocols, declarations or reprints of publications when a relatively small number of copies is required. For very few publications only roneo impression is used with typographed cover pages, 2, When a publication is ready for printing or offset three different printers are invited by the secretariat to send in tenders. In consultation with the United Nations and other international organizations suitable firms both inside and outside Switzerland are approached. In making the choice the following elements are taken into consideration: cost, delivery time, need for frequent consultations etc. As a rule printing paper is purchased on a joint basis with the United Nations. 3. For cost comparison the following example may serve: 1000 copies of Agricultural Products (2nd *nd 3rd Report) of 2nd Committee - Country Consultations 500 pages O Typography: $4,080.- Offset: $3,140.- Roneo: $1,576.- 4. 5. Approximately 95 per cent of GATT documents are reproduced by the United Nations Reproduction Unit. The remaining documents, mostly short papers for internal use only or for special distribution, are roneoed at the. .Secretariat. All stencils are typed by the secretariat. GATT documents roneoed at the UN are distributed by the UN in accc fiance with distribution lists kept up to date by the secretariat. The main bulk of GATT documents are stocked at the UN and only a few copies of each document are filed at the secretariat.

8. A certain number of documents and publications are distributed free of charge (postage paid by GATT) to governments and international organizations. The present free distribution list is given in Annex B. In addition, some publications are distributed free of charge to depository libraries, sales agents, UN Information Centres, etc.
9. Any additional publications requested by contracting parties are billed at 50 per cent of the sales price. -
