"He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up." Did you grow up in a small town? Whenever you see stories of tight-knit communities, a common refrain is that everybody knows everybody and that's very difficult to change. If you leave and return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it's strange for them if you do not. In today's Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving "in the power of the Spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He...was praised by all." His ministry has begun! News of his growing popularity must have proceeded him to Nazareth. Upon his arrival, he "went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day." For the first few moments, he is what they expect - their hometown boy returning to pay his respects. As was common of men at the time, he takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a bold passage, one he selects intentionally. "He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." After reading about holy anointings, liberation for the poor and prisoners, and physical healings, Jesus does the unthinkable. "'Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'" We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might mean doing the unexpected! All too often we're content with the daily status quo, and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Christian values, change our lifestyle to reflect the Gospel, and work for justice in society, we may make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn't call us to the same life we lived yesterday or the year before that. He is calling all of us - each and every one of us - to deeper conversion of heart. No matter what other people expect, will you love in the Spirit of the Lord today?

Come for a tour and see the Holy Cross difference!

BELL TOWER PROJECT As you may know, we have completed the work on the bell tower. The total cost for the project was $23,200. We paid for this with the $15,084 which has been donated through the improvements fund and the balance of $8,116 was taken out of the general fund. We would like to re-pay this amount to the general fund through future donations. If you would like to donate towards this, you can do so through your weekly contribution envelope (be sure to circle the "Capital Improvements" fund on the upper left side of the envelope) or through separate cash or check donations. Please be sure to note on your donation that it is for Capital Improvements. You can put your donation into the collection basket at weekend Masses, mail it, or put it in the drop box outside the Parish Office. We will track our progress in the Liturgical Stewardship section in the weekly bulletins.

2018 CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL REBATE Thank you to everyone who supported the 2018 Catholic Services Appeal. Thanks to your generosity, we received a 25% rebate on the CSA funds that are collected from our parishioners. We recently received a rebate payment of $5,058.38. This is the first of two rebates we will be receiving, the other rebate will be issued in May. These funds are deposited into our general fund and are used as necessary to keep St. Nicholas operating and performing our mission to make Jesus known and loved. The 2019 CSA will be starting soon - please prayerfully consider supporting the 18 (soon to be 20) Collective Ministries of the Archdiocese.

WHY DO WE DO THAT?

CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: This month, we had the March for Life and the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. What does the Church have to say about having respectful conversations between people who disagree? Answer: Christians are not removed from the world and its conflicts. Indeed, Jesus sends us "to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Due to the complex nature of the human experience, the pressures of cultures that don't share Christian values, and the difficulty of living the Gospel, even people of good will have conflicts! The Church has disagreements within herself. This has been the case from the beginning. In the letters of Paul, we see him writing to churches who disagree on how to best live the Gospel in everyday life. And different teachers went to cities after Paul and sometimes preached conflicting messages on who Jesus was. When we encounter people who disagree with us - on topics large and small - we must remember basic Christian values. Respect and compassion are critically important. We need to be good listeners to grasp another person's perspective. This dialogue doesn't mean we compromise our values or deny the truth. We may still disagree, but our conversation can be a lot more civil if we try to understand each other!

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Remember that time when you arrived at school to take a test or quiz on material you failed to read? Maybe it was on a classic book or a chapter in a science textbook. Did your blood pressure go sky high and the sweat start to show on your forehead? Squirming in the seat, you wondered what you could have done to avoid feeling this way. Then it came to you: you should have read what you were supposed to read! Procrastination, indifference, poor scheduling of time, and stubbornness are all reasons why we fail to be prepared for a situation that arises in our lives. We lack commitment in doing what we are asked to do or what we know we should do. This is certainly true in our spiritual lives as well. We may choose to bear the label of disciple or good steward, but we don't really prepare ourselves for the daily journey of life. Sacred Scripture can prepare us more fully for the circumstances of life, but not if we fail to read it. The words contained there are Spirit and life for us. They help us to understand where we fit into the Body of Christ and how we are to respond to the daily call of Christ. Everyday Stewards should be committed to reading and reflection of the Word of God. We know we should spend time with God's Word, but too often we fail to due to the same reasons already mentioned. When we failed to read in school, perhaps we failed the test and it hurt our grade. When we fail in life due to lack of preparedness, sometimes the consequences are more severe.

DOUGHNUT SUNDAY HOSTS NEEDED FOR 2/10/2019

Hosting Doughnut Sunday is shared by parish groups and individuals every second Sunday of the month after both Sunday Masses. Volunteers help serve coffee, juice, milk, and doughnuts and clean up afterward. A free will offering is collected and helps to provide the doughnuts each Sunday. Easy instructions are given and help is always there to guide you. This is a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners and to volunteer and involve the whole family or join with others to serve fellow parishioners. For more information or to sign up to host, call the parish office or visit our parish website:

January 27, 2019 The 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK St. Theresa of Avila reminds us that, "Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world. Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people." We are, in every way shape and form, the Body of Christ. Our bodies are not just one single part but many. We are many, and we are all uniquely different. Yet each in his or her own way contributes significantly to the whole. We are all baptized in one spirit, and there are no distinctions that separate us. We must keep our eyes focused on the greater whole and not get distracted or consumed with particular parts. Everything and everyone must work together for the praise and glory of God.
