Each summer since 1968 in the beautiful Berkshires of Massachusetts, the Boston Symphony Orchestra operates Days in the Arts(DARTS), a multi-cultural, residential education program where Massachusetts’ 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students gather together to explorethe arts. DARTS offers children the opportunity to spend five of their summer days totally immersed in the arts, engaged in intensiveworkshops and touring various cultural venues throughout the Berkshires. DARTS serves 400 students each summer during eight one-week sessions from various communities. The DARTS philosophy is founded on fostering respect for and interest in each person’s eth-nicity, interests, talents, and individuality. DARTS strives to provide an environment in which students are exposed to the arts and topeople from a wide range of backgrounds.

Slots are reserved for Boston Public School students in weeks 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. If these slotsare not filled by Boston Public School students by the end of April, we will open them toBoston residents who do not attend a Boston Public School. If your child is a Boston PublicSchool Student or a Boston resident, please fill out the attached registration forms and make sureto list the weeks your child is available to attend DARTS. We will do our best to place yourchild in the DARTS program.

The fee for Boston residents to participate in DARTS is $250. The actual cost of DARTS is over$1350 per camper, and this fee is significantly subsidized to make this opportunity more afford-able for families. There is a limited amount of financial aid available.

Arts Workshops: Arts Workshops are taught by experienced arts educators from throughoutMassachusetts. Students may choose from Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Theater/Drama, Dance or Visual Arts. All Arts Workshops work toward a presentation for theirpeers on the last night of the session. (Students will be asked to indicate their top threechoices on their registration form. DARTS guarantees placement in one of the top three se-lections. Workshop assignments will be mailed to you 2-3 weeks before your student isscheduled to come to DARTS.)

Vocal Music: Those enrolled in the Vocal Music workshop will have the opportunity to sing great music while using proper techniqueand learning the fundamentals associated with singing. Students will learn how to use their voice effectively to become strong singers. Noprevious experience required.

Instrumental Music: The Instrumental Music workshop helps students learn the skills necessary to play together in a group. Repertoireis selected based on the level of the group and can consist of classical, jazz, folk and film music. Students should have a basic understand-ing of and ability to read printed music. We suggest that those interested in the instrumental workshop have at least one year of dedi-cated and continuous study on the instrument, either through a school program or through private instruction. Students can bringtheir own instrument but it is not required; standard orchestral instruments are provided. Instruments are stored in a locked classroomduring a student’s time at DARTS.

Theater/Drama: Those enrolled in the Theater workshop will learn techniques and skills needed to become a successful stage actor—drama to comedy, scripts to improvisation. Theater students will gain insight into acting no matter what their skill level. No previousexperience required.

Dance: Dancers will learn the fundamentals of dance. This workshop will consist of learning proper stretching and warm-uptechniques, as well as a short choreographed work developed by the instructor. This class is high energy with a ton a fun mixed in!Dance is for everybody! No previous experience required.

Visual Arts: In this workshop students will explore a number of techniques involved with visual arts. Past Visual Arts workshops haveused sculpture, watercolors, oils, mural painting, charcoals and canvas painting. No previous experience required.

Creative Expression: Creative Expression classes are taught by school teachers from participating communities. In Creative Expres-sion, students spend time with self-reflection, journal writing, and other expressive activities to jumpstart their imaginations for the day.

Cultural Excursions: In addition to their intensive Arts Workshop experience, students are immersed in countless forms and aspects ofthe arts during daily Cultural Excursions to local cultural institutions. Venues visited may include Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Ches-terwood, Shakespeare and Company, Berkshire Theater Festival, Norman Rockwell Museum, Clark Art Institute, Williamstown Thea-ter, Tanglewood and more!

Housing: At DARTS all students, staff and faculty are housed in secured dormitory facilities on the DARTS campus, the site of theformer Valley Head School in Lenox, MA. Each dormitory suite consists of double occupancy student rooms and, at least, one Coun-selor-in-Training (CIT) room. Dorms are monitored by senior staff members and security personnel.

Meals are served in the dining hall or picnic style, either on the DARTS campus or at one of the excursion sites. DARTS Dining Ser-vices staff can accommodate special dietary needs if notified prior to the start of the program in June. Occasionally, assistance fromparents may be requested to help meet dietary needs. Please be sure to note any food allergies/restrictions on both medical forms.

Recreation: Weather permitting, we swim once per week at the Tanglewood Lake where a certified lifeguard is on duty. Someevenings, we also have the opportunity for recreation and group activities.

Staff: DARTS has a multi-ethnic staff. Heading the program are Myran Parker-Brass, Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Director ofEducation and Community Programs, Claire Carr, Manager of Education Programs and Monise Reed, DARTS Program Coordi-nator. A dynamic faculty from all over the state leads the daily Arts Workshops. Each week teachers from participating commu-nities teach Creative Expression classes and six high school students, who are DARTS alumni, work as Counselors-in-Training(CITS). There is a certified nurse on campus with the students to administer necessary medication as well.

Transportation: All students, except for those located in Berkshire County, will be transported to and from DARTS via coachbus. The bus will arrive at a central community location to pick up your child on Monday morning, and will return to the samelocation on Friday afternoon. Bus schedule information, community bus stop location, and directions to Valley Head School(Berkshire participants) will be sent to you 2-3 weeks before your child’s time at DARTS. If you wish to drive your student toValley Head and/or pick them up, please notify the DARTS office by calling 617.638.9375 or emailing darts@bso.org at least oneweek prior to your child’s attendance.

Contacting Your Child: Although we do not permit students to call home during their time at DARTS, parents are welcome towrite to their child via email or regular mail using the addresses and formats below. (Emails are printed out and distributed;students will not be able to reply to the email.) Please allow at least one week for letters, packages, etc. to arrive at DARTS.

Orientation: All parents are urged to attend one of three orientation meetings. These meetings will include a discussion of theprogram, a question and answer period, and time to meet some of the DARTS staff. If you are unable to attend on your designateddate, please feel free to attend one of the other sessions. Those attending a Symphony Hall session, please use the Cohen Wingentrance on Huntington Avenue. The Berkshire session will be held at Girls, Inc./Brigham Community Center, 165 East Street,Pittsfield, MA.

Tuition: DARTS tuition covers all necessary expenses during your child’s time at DARTS (this includes all meals, housing,admission to Cultural Excursions and transportation to/from the Boston area for non-Berkshire students). There is no needfor your child to bring additional money with them to DARTS. Students will have the opportunity to shop at the DARTSMART (the DARTS store) which includes several items (from sweatshirts to water bottles) with the Days in the Arts logo.A price list of these items will be sent to you with the letter containing your child’s workshop assignment and bus pick upand drop off information 2-3 weeks before your child’s time at DARTS.

A $50 non-refundable deposit is due on April 8th, 2011 in order to reserve your child’s space in the program. Remainingpayment is due in full by Friday, June 3, 2011 and should be sent directly to the DARTS office at 301 Massachusetts Ave-nue, Boston, MA, 02115.

Cancellation Policy: We will refund your registration fee (minus the $50 non-refundable deposit) if notice of cancellation isreceived more than two weeks before your child’s scheduled time at DARTS. Notice of cancellation received less than twoweeks prior to your child’s scheduled time at DARTS will not warrant a refund.

Financial Assistance: Organizations in your community (such as PTO’s or Lion’s Club etc.) will often provide financialassistance or scholarships to students from their community. We strongly encourage you to check with organizations in yourcommunity to see if this is available.

Families interested in obtaining need-based financial assistance through the Boston Symphony Orchestra should obtain aFinancial Assistance Request Form. This form should be filled out completely and submitted directly to the DARTS office(301 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA 02115) no later than April 8th, 2011. Requests received after this date may notreceive consideration. The DARTS staff will send a financial agreement form to you.
