On July 1, 2011, Rick Cole became a full time employee of William Jewell College, not only broadcasting games but working with community engagement projects and helping with the marketing of WJC athletics.
He has been the play-by-play voice of Jewell athletics since 2006, and will likely broadcast his 1000 Cardinal events on the William Jewell College Sports Network (WJCSN) in the spring of 2016, as well as being involved in other broadcasting events.Cole has also been involved in the broadcasts and productions on a conference and regional level, with work in announcing men’s soccer, basketball, tennis and track & field, producing the video coverage for tennis and track.
Live video streaming of Cardinal home events in football, soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball became a reality in 2011-12, as well as the live broadcast of Jewell’s graduation in May of 2012 and 2013.. During the winter of 2012, live swimming was added to the production schedule, with the first Jewell tennis match broadcast in January of 2015.There have also been approximately 1500 videos posted to the Jewell athletic website, www.jewellcardinals.com, produced by Cole and the WJCSN.
Jewell also was named winner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference 2011-12 Award of Excellence for their participation and coverage of a significant community engagement activity during their first year in the conference, being selected for the honor after Cole submitted a video of the event to the Conference. In 2012 through 2014, Jewell home events that are streamed on the Jewell athletic website were also seen on Time-Warner Cable Sports Channel throughout the region.
Cole started his announcing career in Sidney, Nebraska, in the 1970s as a studio board operator and disc jockey. He eventually became the youngest Sports Director in Nebraska radio at the time, beginning that position in 1981 at the age of 19.Drifting away from radio for several years, Cole ventured into teaching and coaching. He was the assistant baseball coach at Wayne State College for four years, among other jobs.
He resurfaced in the 90’s doing volleyball live on the radio, something that wasn’t widely done. “My audition tape was made at home...they thought I was doing a pro basketball game live from the TV broadcast, when I actually had taped a part of the game and had several chances to get my call right.”Coming to the Kanas City area in 1999, Cole began broadcasting sports on Comcast Cable in eastern Jackson County.
The process evolved into a multi-camera format, featuring graphics and replays and covering nearly every sport, including auto racing and World Team Tennis, many of the same processes that are used in the production of Jewell events. Beginning in the 2011-12 school year, the WJCSN has now featured as many as six different cameras to cover events, and has expanded to slow-motion replays and on-screen graphics as well. The live video in 2011, however, was much more rudimentary, with a single person--Cole--operating a self-created mobile broadcast board which featured mixing three cameras, audio mixing, commercial insertion and play-by-play announcing for the operator.
These days, workers on the live broadcast staff are mainly Jewell work/study students who train and work as part of their financial aid package at Jewell.“I think our online telecasts are the best in the GLVC,” said Cole. “It’s a tribute to the College for allowing me to produce coverage in the way I think suits us best, and to the students at Jewell for executing the plan.”
On Wednesday, April 13, 2016 Cole broadcasted his 1,000th William Jewell Athletic event while covering the Cardinals softball team as they split with Central Missouri.

The Cardinals will celebrate their 118th season of varsity football in 2016 with a near-record sized roster, a newly resurfaced turf field and a renewed commitment to restoring the Jewell Football winning tradi-tion.
Second year head coach Shawn Weigel is ready to get this new mix of Cardinals rolling on August 8. “Everyone is very excited about this season,” Weigel said. “Our culture is very good and the level of accountability is excellent. I have always believed that you have to have a good locker room before you have a good football team and I really like where our locker room is right now.”
Offense:
The Cardinal Offense looks to improve and continue its momentum from 2015. The Cardinals, who led the GLVC in passing and finished fourth in total offense a year ago, return a host of starters in many important skill positions.
Quarterback:
The Cardinals will be looking to a new face as their signal caller in 2016. The graduation of Nick West, the Cardinals QB for the majority of the last two seasons, has left the all-important position open for competi-tion this fall. Jared Hobby (SO), Collin Rugg (FR), and Brad Strauss (JR), a transfer form Northwest Missouri State, will be among those fighting it out for the right to lead the Cardinals onto the field in September.
Running Back:
The Cardinals return Second Team All-GLVC running back Tre Mask (JR) and 4-year contributor Darrick Strzelecki (SR) in 2016. Mask, who led the Cardinals with 661 Yards and 7 touchdowns in 2015, looks to increase his overall production this fall while Strzelecki works to finish a very productive career in the Cardinal backfield. The Cards will also look to Chance Nelson (SO), Rye’ll Dydell (FR) and Kahluna Bouchard (FR) for depth.
Wide Receiver:
The Cardinal receivers will arguably be the most experienced and deep position on the field in 2016. The Cards return First Team All-GLVC honoree Anthony Mullins (SR), a 1000 yd. performer in ’15 who
also led the league in All-Purpose yards. Joining Mullins are veterans Cody Edwards (SR), Staton Rebeck (JR), Drake Hofer (JR) and the second leading receiver for the Cardinals in 2015, Bulla Graft (SO). The Cardinals will also look to Ian Burch (JR) and Frankie Gomez (SO) to contribute through the air.
Offensive Line:
The offensive line lost four of five starters from 2015 to graduation. Jake Anthony (JR) will return to anchor the line in 2016 along with experienced veteran Trevor Goforth (SR). Austin White (JR), Jeff
Gallimore (JR), Nick Hartwig (SO), Josh Blochlinger (SO), Zach Hand (FR) and Jaymes Ginn (FR) look to compete to round out the front 5 for the Cardinals in 2016.
2016 OUTLOOK
5
Defense:
The Cardinals are set to replace a number of starters on the defensive side of the ball in 2016. The Cardinal Defense, which finished third in rushing defense in ’15 looks to continue their success
against the run while improving upon their pass defense, which was last in the league this past sea-son.
Defensive Line:
The front three of the Cardinals will return 2 starters in 2016. Collin Heller (SR) and Kier Stamp (SO) look to anchor the front line of the defense, which led the league in tackles for
loss and sacks in ’15. The Cards will also look to Dylan Doss (SR), Christian Hunt (SO) and Jack Kutey (FR) to contribute in 2016.
Linebacker:
The Cardinals will return three of four starters at the linebacker position in 2016. Quayde Bauman (SO), who led the Cards in sacks in 2015 will be joined by Parker Wood (SR), Zach Haynes (SR), Kolby Fennewald (SR) and Andrew Baxley (SR) to round out a group that con-trolled a large portion of the defensive production at linebacker in 2015.
Secondary:
The Cardinals will return three starters at the secondary position in 2016. Strong safety Isaac Dozier (JR) and Honorable Mention All-GLVC cornerback Justice Taylor (SO), who each had 4 inter-
ceptions in 2015, will be joined by two-year starting free safety Andrew Pence (JR), cornerback Orlando Ward (JR), cornerback Michael McCuaig (SO) and transfer cornerbacks Mohammad Abubakar (JR) and Alex Jimenez (FR) as they work to improve the Cardinal pass defense in 2016.
Special Teams:
The Cardinal special teams will look to build on a very successful 2015 campaign. First Team All-Con-ference kicker Brandon Womack (SR) returns for the Cardinals in 2016. Womack kicked 3 game win-ning field goals in 2015, including a GLVC record 52 yarder against Southwest Baptist. Anthony Mullins (SR) who led the league in All-Purpose yards in 2015 and Bulla Graft (SO) look to continue adding a spark for the Cardinals on special teams in 2016 as well. Zane Kitchell, the Cardinals punter for the last 4 years graduated in May, leaving the punter position open for competition in 2016. Rhett Purling (FR) and Evan Kitchell (SO) will look to battle during camp for the punting duties.
The 2016 Cardinals will open their season where they left off in 2015, in Rapid City, South Dakota. The Cardinals look to avenge a season ending loss and get things rolling with a win on September 3 against South Dakota School of Mines.

First Up In The GLVCThe Cardinals will open 2016 Great Lakes Valley Con-ference play in Week Three as they host Saint Joseph’s College. In 2015 the Pumas were also the Cards open-ing GLVC contest and defeated Jewell 35-9. Following the opening home game, WJC will take to the road to take on McKendree and Missouri S&T before returning home to host Quincy and SBU. Truman State and Indianapolis will also be on the road before Jewell will host Lincoln for Se-
nior Day on November 5 to close the season.
The Last Will Be FirstJewell will open the 2016 season with the same opponent that closed 2015, South Dakota School of Mines and Tech-nology. The Cardinals fell to the Hardrockers 35-14 on the road last November. Last season Jewell came to Rapid City with a new head man in Shawn Weigel, but this time it will be SDSMT will be under new direction as Zachary Tin-ker takes the helm. Tinker, like Weigel spent several years
on staff at SDSMT befor taking over the head job.

2016 CARDINAL STORYLINESNEW YEAR, NEW QBThe Cardinals will begin the 2016 season with a new quarterback after the graduation of Nick West. West was the primary starter for much of the past two seasons. In 2015 he became the first quarterback in the NCAA era to surpass the 3,000 yard mark, which ranked tops in the GLVC. In the hunt for the job will be Brad Strauss, a transfer from Northwest Missouri State, along with soph-omore Jared Hobby, and true freshman Collin Rugg.
SECOND YEAR UNDER WEIGELAt this time last year the Jewell football program was undergoing a transition as long time assistant Shawn Weigel moved into the head position. This fall, however, it will be just the newcomers making the transition as the Jewell staff has been in place for over a year and wel-come back a strong crop of veteran players. In his first season Weigel led Jewell to a 4-7 record including 4-4 in the GLVC and looks to improve on those marks in 2016.

William Jewell Cardinal football battled the warm temperatures and Division I FCS Drake University on Saturday night, dropping a 44-30 opener on the road. The Cardinals trailed the entire night, but cut the lead to just six points with 12:50 left in the game when Nick West connected with Cody Edwards for a 22 yard touchdown pass. West was 24-40 in the game for 205 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Drake took control at that point, however, scoring two touch-downs and adding a two-point conversion to pull away late. Special teams played a factor in the game, with the Cardinals blocking a punt, recovering a fumbled punt, and scoring on Anthony Mullins 97 yard kickoff return in the third quarter. Zane Kitchell av-eraged 43.8 yards on five punts, and Brandon Womack kicked a 40 yard field goal. Isaac Dozier also had an interception for the Cardinals. Offen-sively, Trey Mask carried the ball 23 times for 114 yards and a 29 yard touchdown. Mullins had 68 yards receiving. On defense, Nick Messer had 14 total tackles and Parker Wood nine.

Three touchdowns in each half propelled sixteenth-ranked Colorado School of Mines past the William Jewell College football team 42-7 on Saturday after-noon in the home opener of the 2015 season for William Jewell. Mines, which ranked No. 16 in the latest NCAA Division II poll, improved to 2-0 on the year. Jewell dropped to 0-2 on the year after its season opening loss at Drake last weekend. The Orediggers set the tone early and drove 47 yards on their second possession of the game as Justin Dvorak completed a 20 yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Ellis. Mines then took a 14-0 lead when Dvorak found Cole Spurgeon for 12 yards in the end zone. The Cardinals responded in the opening drive of the second quarter when Thomas Cook, Jr. rushed for 13 yards out to give Jewell is only score of the game. Mines found the endzone again when Dvorak completed a pass to Nate Wiemers from 27 yards out that gave the Orediggers a 21-7 halftime lead. The Cardinals forced a quick three and out and after a seven yard punt found themselves starting their first drive of the half from the Oredigger 13 yard line. Mines came up with a huge defensive stand to hold the Cardinals scoreless. Mines would add another touchdown in the third followed by two more in the fourth that produced the 42-7 margin.Cook, Jr., finished with 130 yards on 19 carries for an average of 6.8 yards per rush. Quarterback Nick West was 17-of-34 for 153 yards through the air. AnthonyMullins led the Cardinals with five catches for 63 yards, while Cook, Jr., had three receptions for 20 yards.Zach Haynes led the Jewell defense with six tackles and a sack, while Le’Andre Nebbit and Isaac Dozier Jr. each regis-tered an interception for Jewell. Dvorak finished the day 26-38 for 276 yards and four touchdowns for the Orediggers.

SAINT JOSEPH’S COLLEGESeptember 19 | Rensselaer, Ind.
MCKENDREE UNIVERSITYSeptember 26 | Liberty, Mo.
Jewell football, looking for its first win of the 2015 season on the road at Saint Joseph’s College in the Great Lakes Valley Conference football opener, will look another week for a winning combination after falling to the Pumas 34-9 on Saturday. Not that they didn’t have chances to pick up a win, as a 13-9 deficit starting the fourth quarter became a hill to steep to overcome following three turn-overs and three Saint Joseph touchdowns in the final period. The Cardinals were down just 6-0 late in the first half when Brandon Womack hit a 34 yard field goal just before halftime, a half that saw both teams strug-gle on offense and struggle to keep their composure following several person-al foul calls. In the third quarter, the Pumas and Cardinals traded touchdowns to set up a wild final 15 minutes.Jewell’s touchdown came on a Nick West to Bulla Graft 17 yard pass play with three seconds left in the third quarter. The fourth quarter began with the Pumas scoring another touchdown, but, with the Cardinals moving the ball well, a fumble gave the ball back to Saint Joseph at midfield and the Pumas scored another touchdown, making it 27-9 with 6:22 left.Jewell moved the ball down the field well one more time, but an 85-yard inter-ception return sealed the game for Saint Joseph, who also picked off another pass late in the quarter. The Cardinals managed just 288 yard of total offense, and Saint Joseph had 394. Anthony Mullins had five receptions for 77 yards, including a tremendous grab of a deflected ball in the third quarter for 41 yards.Parker Wood collected 12 tackles, while Isaac Dozier had 11. ,Andrew Baxley blocked a punt for the Cardinals.

MISSOURI S&TOcotber 3 | Liberty, Mo.
QUINCY UNIVERSITYOctober 10 | Quincy, Ill.
The William Jewell College football team used a strong defense and special teams effort to earn their first win of 2015, 40-16 over Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday. With over 2,000 in attendance for Homecoming festivities the Cardinals won for the first time on homecoming since October 2, 2010 when Jewell defeated Central Methodist 13-3.Things did not start out looking good for Jewell. They held S&T to a punt on the Miners’ first possession and then drove all the way to the S&T 27 yard line when Nick West’s pass was intercepted by Isaac Williams. Isaac Dozier then picked off his first of two passes on the day on the next possession and Jewell took over at their own seven yard line. A penalty took the Cards back to the two and Nick West threw another interception this time to Jeremi Ross who took into the end zone and after a missed extra point S&T took an early 6-0 lead.Jewell’s first score of the day came at the start of the second quarter when West rushed in from six yards out and the game was tied 6-6 after Brandon Womack’s point after attempt was wide. S&T responded with a 12 play drive and kicked a 28 yard field goal to go up 9-6. It would end up being their last lead of the game.On the ensuing kickoff Anthony Mullins brought the crowd to their feet with his electrifying 97-yard kickoff return touchdown that put Jewell up 13-9. A drive later Thomas Cook, Jr., found the end zone from 17 yards out and Jewell went into halftime up 20-9.Womack extended the lead to 23-9 with his 22 yard field goal which was set up by a 76 yard run from West on the first play of the third quarter. The Miners answered right back when quarterback Lamar Wilkes hooked up with Elrod Spencer for 42 yards and cut Jewell’s lead to 23-16. Two drives later with 5:17 to play in the third quarter the Miners missed a golden opportunity when Wilkes again found Spencer wide open from 58 yards out but Spencer dropped the sure touchdown pass and swung momentum back to JewellTrejuan Mask opened the fourth quarter with a six yard touchdown run that gave Jewell a 30-16 lead with just over 13 minutes to play. On the next Miner possession Isaac Dozier picked off Wilkes at the S&T 42 and returned it to the S&T 20. Womack then connected from 36 yards out on a field goal that increased the Cardinal lead to 33-16. The next possession saw the Miners drive all the way to Jewell nine yard line when facing a fourth and goal the defense once again stepped up. This time Justice Taylor picked off Wilkes in the endzone and sealed the game for Jewell. Bulla Graft added a late score from five yards out which produced the 40-16 winning margin. West finished the day 12-30 for 102 yards and 73 yards rushing. Defensively Dozier finished with two picks while Nick Messer led the Cardinals with six tackles and a sack. Anthony Mullis tallied 212 all-purpose yards for Jewell including his 97 yard touchdown return.

Two timeouts by Quincy University with just four seconds left in the game did not phase Jewell kicker Brandon Womack, as the Cardinals upended Quincy Saturday on Womack’s no-time-remaining field goal from 28 yards on Saturday afternoon, lifting Jewell to a 24-21 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference football. The Cardinals rallied from 14 point deficits twice in the game, 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the half.Quincy did not score the rest of the game, as Jewell shut them out for the final 39:56 of the game. The Cardinal rally began in the second half. Down 21-7, Nate Egharevba took a 47 yard pass from Nick West down the left sideline to cut the lead to seven, then, after an Justice Taylor interception, the Cardinals scored again on a Thomas Cook one yard dive early in the fourth quarter.Although Jewell had the better of field position in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t until the final drive began at the Cardinal 49 yard line with 2:23 remaining that Jewell could focus on winning the game. Using the clock deliberately, the Cardinals drove down to the Quincy 11 yard line to set up the final kick.Womack waited through the back-to-back time outs from the Hawks before hitting the winning field goal from just inside the left hashmark.

Kicker Brandon Womack delivered under pressure again for William Jewell College on Saturday, kicking a career-long 52 yard field goal with 1:02 remianing to give the Cardinals a 35-34 win at Southwest Baptist in Great Lakes Valley Conference football. The kick is also the longest in GLVC football history. The win is the third straight for Jewell and moves them to 3-4 overall, and 3-2 in the confer-ence.The Cardinals jumped out to a 17-0 lead with 12:22 left in the first half, as Womack hit a 39 yard field goal, Tre Mask ran for a touchdown for a yard out and Nick West also ran for a three-yard score. SBU came back with a touchdown in the middle of the second quarter, but Womack’s second field goal of the half was good from 35 yards out just before the intermis-sion and Jewell lead 20-7.The Cardinals were beset by three turnovers in the second half and untimely penalties (they were flagged for nine violations and 85 yards in the game). After trading touchdowns, the Bearcats scored three unanswered touchdowns and took a 34-26 lead with 10:15 left in the game.Jewell came right back with a touchdown run by Mask, but could not convert the two-point try, trailing 34-32.The Cardinals forced SBU into a three-and-out offensively, started the game-winning drive at the 25 yard line. A key completion from West to Anthony Mullins moved the ball to the 35 yard line and ultimately set up the Womack try from 52 yards.Into a left-to-right crosswind, and from the left hash mark, the kick seemed long enough ini-tially but then started to drop dramatically. but cleared the crossbar with a yard to spare, good enough for a 35-34 lead. The Bearcats were able to complete a long pass down to the Jewell 30, but a fourth down play was stopped after a short completion over the middle and the Cardinals held on for the win.

The William Jewell College football team had their three game winning streak snapped today by Truman State, 40-28 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Liberty. Truman quarterback Randy Schroeder completed 24-of-38 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown while receiver Joey Schenck snagged 13 receptions for 157 yards to improve the Bulldogs to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. Truman’s running back Andy Satulla, the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, gained 127 yards rushing on 31 attempts including a clinching touchdown run of 36 yards with under two minutes to play.Jewell’s Anthony Mullins had 9 receptions for a career-high 188 yards and two touchdowns. Nick West went 32-52 for 393 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, Quayde Bouman had a game-high 10 tackles and had two tackles for losses. The Cards held Truman to a three and out on the first drive only to give the ball right back to the Bulldogs. On the Cardinals first play from scrimmage, West threw an interception that set Truman up deep in Cardi-nal territory. Jewell held Truman to a field goal of 38 yards for a 3-0 lead. William Jewell then drove all the way to the Truman 21-yard line but was stopped on a fourth and three. Again, Jewell forced a Truman punt but Thomas Cook fumbled the ball at the Cardinal two yard line and the Bulldogs recovered and scored two plays later for a 10-0 lead. Truman then took what looked like a commanding lead on their next possession when Schroeder found Schenck from 15 yards out that put the Bulldogs up 17-0. Jewell got on the board on the next possession after a 64-yard touchdown pass from West to Mullins. Satulla put Truman back up 24-7 two drives later as he rushed in from one yard out. West connected with Mullins again for a huge 50 yard touchdown on the next possession that cut the Bulldog lead to 24-14. Two drives later Jewell cut the lead to three when West found Bulla Graft from 14 yards out and Truman would lead 24-21 at the half. That would be the closest the Cards would get the rest of the way.The Bulldogs engineered an impressive 15 play 84 yard opening drive of the third quarter when Jessie Jenkins rushed in from one yard out and put Truman up by ten. After holding the Cards again Truman added to the lead with a 42 yard field goal to lead 34-21. The Cardinals scored on their next possession when West found Trejuan Mask from 19 yards out that cut the lead to 34-28 and that score would stand as the game headed into the fourth quarter. After a Bulldog punt the Cardinals again drove deep in Truman territory only to give the ball back on downs. Facing a fourth and nine West’s pass fell incomplete and Truman took over possession with 7:36 to play. The Bulldogs put the game away with a 12 play 73 yard drive that ate up 5:54 on the clock and ended when Satulla ran it in from 36 yards out.

Brandon Womack is 3-3 in game winning kicks this season, adding yet another clincher to his resume on Saturday as Jewell football held off Lincoln University 34-31 in Jeffer-son City, Missouri. The junior’s kick came from the left hashmark 30 yards away with no time left on the clock. It capped a day in which the Cardinal offense shined for a half, but the Cardinal defense was under pressure in the second half.Jewell scored on Tre Mask’s one-yard reception to open the game with a 7-0 lead, and extended the lead on two Thomas Cook, Jr. runs of 38 and 6 yards, along with a Wom-ack 28 yard field goal, to lead at half 24-14.The second half opened with Justice Taylor’s second interception of the game, along with his 46 yard return for a touchdown, to push the lead to 31-14. The Blue Tigers (1-9, 0-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference), though, made a change in quarterback as they went to sophomore Dennis Vinson, and the game turned at that point with Vinson leading :Lincoln to 17 straight points to tie the game at 31.The Cardinal defense, despite giving up the points, was mostly solid after Lincoln pulled to within 31-24 with 5:12 left in the third quarter. Lincoln finally scored the tying touchdown on a long catch and run with 3:36 left, setting up the late game heroics by Womack. The Cardinals started the game-winning drive with 3:31 left, going 62 yards on 11 plays highlighted by a Nick West pass to Mask on 4th down to keep the drive alive. After two timeouts, Womack calmly hit his third game winning field goal of the season (all on the road), to give the Cardinals the win and push their record to 4-6 (4-4).Defensively, Quayde Bauman had three sacks for Jewell and led with seven tackles; Isaac Dozier and Zach Haynes also had seven tackles.Womack is 11-13 in field goals this year, with each miss coming on a block.

SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OFMINES & TECHNOLOGY
September 19 | Rensselaer, Ind.The William Jewell College football team ended their season with a loss to South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Saturday in Rapid City, South Dakota. The 35-14 win by the Hardrockers leaves Jewell with a 4-7 record for the season. It didn’t look like Jewell would struggle at all initially, as Nick West hit Bulla Graft with an 85 yard touchdown strike 55 seconds into the game to give the Cardinals a quick lead. The Cardinals continued to move the ball on their second drive, but a holding call negated a 15 yard touchdown pass, and a missed field goal ended the drive. It was mostly SDM&T after that. The Hardrockers (6-5) scored the next 35 consecutive points, as Jewell turned the ball over four times in the game. The final score was a West to Anthony Mullins pass from 15 yards out with 2:12 left in the third quarter.West had a career high with 517 yards on 34 of 62 passing; the Cardinals didn’t have much of a chance to develop their run game, and finished with 41 yards rushing.Mines had a tough time rushing the ball also, as the Cardinal defense held them to nine total rush yards. They did throw, however, for 479 yards.Jewell’s Mullins had 11 receptions for 136 yards, and Graft had seven recep-tions for 173 yards. Defensively, Andrew Pence and Zach Haynes each had 7.5 tackles.

Established in 1978 with a commitment to the purposes, fundamental policies and basic principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to embody the vision established by the founders of the organization and has melded athletic and academic excellence for 35 years.
The GLVC, which at one point over the past decade grew to 17 members and was the larg-est athletic conference in the country in any division, has fully embraced NCAA Division II. Although formed and developed as one of the nation’s premier NCAA Division II basketball conferences, the GLVC now sponsors 20 championship sports, which includes the addition of football in 2012 and men’s and women’s swimming and diving in 2013-14.
The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three schools - Kentucky Wesleyan College, Bellarmine College (now Bellarmine University) and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the Univer-sity of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC. Under the direction of 14-year Commissioner Jim Naumovich, the GLVC will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary with several online and social media campaigns over the course of the 2013-14 academic season, while a 30-second public service announcement has also been produced.
The conference headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Midwest media markets in which the league maintains a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (Illinois Springfield), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Kansas City (Rockhurst, William Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville, McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis).
The conference sponsors 20 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men, and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, swimming and diving, indoor and out-door track and field, golf, and volleyball for women.
In the history of the GLVC, member schools have captured 12 NCAA Division II national championships, including nine on the men’s side. Seven of those titles were earned in the sport of men’s basketball, including Drury’s national championship in 2013 and Bellarmine’s title in 2011. Former member Kentucky Wesleyan won the 1987, 1990, 1999 and 2001 crowns under the GLVC umbrella, while Southern Indiana added a national title in 1995. Northern Kentucky won the school’s first-ever women’s basketball national championship in 2000 and followed that with a national title in 2008. In addition, Northern Kentucky became the first GLVC member to win a national championship in men’s soccer, while USI staked claim to the GLVC’s first baseball national championship in 2010. SIU Edwardsville was the first GLVC member to win a national championship in softball in 2007.
The league also takes pride in recognizing the many academic and athletic accomplish-ments achieved by its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. In 2012-13, the GLVC ranked third among 23 NCAA Division II conferences in Academic Success Rate (ASR) at 80 percent and third in the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) at 62 percent for all student-ath-letes. In addition, a conference-record 2,002 student-athletes were recognized with Aca-demic All-GLVC recognition in 2012-13, while a league-best 225 student-athletes earned the GLVC Council of Presidents’ Academic Excellence Award for grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
At William Jewell College we prepare students to think critically and adapt in a rapidly changing and complext world. As a national liberal arts college, Jewell emphasizes “liberal” learning, mean-ing to liberate the mind, think independently, respect differences, connect ideas and challenge assumptions. This approach to teaching and learning is reflected in all areas of study and experi-ence-based activities.
A Community of ScholarsOur passionate professors operate as mentors to create a vibrant learning community. Small class sizeds and personal attention are two attributes that frequently garner Jewell attention n national studies. Students of all majors collaborate with professors on conducting original research, publishing articles in scholarly journals, presenting at national conferences and preparing for intercolle-giate competitions.
Engaged Learning“Living what you learn” is highly valued at Jewell. We help students build a personalized, experiential Jewell that balances academic rigor with experiences that develop passions. Students set their own course of learning through research scholarships, service learning, campus leadership, Journey Grants, study abroad, and internships.
Value of the Jewell ExperienceAbout 92 percent of Jewell graduates complete their degree in four years and 99 percent have jobs or are in graduate school within six months of graduating. The Jewell experience also ex-tends far beyhond the diploma. We prepare students for the whole of life. We build a foundation for lifelong learning, global citzenship and social responsiblity. A liberal arts education at William Jewell provides a lens for a new way of looking at the world.

OXBRIDGE HONORS COLLEGEFor over twenty-five years the William Jewell College Oxbridge Honors Program has been preparing students with the knowledge, vision, and flexibility to succeed in the highly-competitive and rapidly evolving environments of academics, professions, business, and service. As the only honors program in the United States offering majors with a full curriculum of tutorial-based instruction and a full year of study in Oxford, the Oxbridge Honors Program is a highly personalized, reading-writing intensive approach to
education that combines the best of the British-intense and deep study, with great independence-and the American-broad background and close
mentorship-approaches to higher education.
Oxbridge graduates point to the emphasis on writing, as well as the dis-cipline of working indepently, as excellent preparation for both graduate school and for the professional life. Our graduates speak of learning to see multiple perspectives of an issue, of developing critical judgement by which to evaluate and synthesize multiple perspectives, and of the ability to think
on one’s feet as important benefits of their Oxbridge training.

A Welcome From the President
William Jewell College provides an outstanding undergraduate experience for students who wish to invest themselves in their own education. In addition to the foundation of excellence in the core curriculum, the College provides bountiful enrichment opportunities that include the Perspectives on the Common Good Lecture Series, numerous study-abroad programs, the Hall Summer Enrichment grants, summer research grants, dozens of internship locations, and NCAA athletics. We also provide a Journey Grant for every student. This grant provides $2,000 for every student to construct his or her own experiential opportunity. These grants will make it possible for every student to study abroad or conduct research or have an internship or create an experience none of us have yet envisioned. The educational experience of Jewell students is not limited to the classroom. In fact, we expect you to be engaged frequently beyond the classroom. These opportunities and dozens of others prepare our grad-uates for outstanding first jobs or placements at the best graduate schools in the world. In the fall of 2014, we provided a new iPad to every student, every faculty member and most staff mem-
bers so that every person has the best educational device and applications available. Access to tools and technology greatly enhances the experience of every student, resulting in our recognition as an Apple Distinguished School. We call our initiative Jewellverse. We want you to enter the Jewell-verse and experience just how exciting education can be. We opened Pryor Learning Commons in 2013 as the most advanced library/learning facility in the Midwest. The Learning Commons has transformed the way students gather and use information. The innovation studios in the building allow our faculty to build learning experiences that take advantage of technology and worldwide connectivity. We use every tool available to provide a great liberal arts education. Learning at Jewell is led by outstanding faculty members. One of our faculty members, Dr. Mark Walters, has been named among Princeton Review’s Best 300 Professors in America. His work with students is reflective of the quality of teaching you will find in every discipline at Jewell. Jewell students compete well for national prestigious fellowships and scholarships. These fellowship competitions help to prepare our stu-dents for applying to the best graduate schools and employers in the country. View our list of student academic honors. We are fortunate to be located in a region (Liberty / Kansas City) that provides the best in quality living. Liberty still has a strong community feel even though it has grown to more than 30,000 residents. Our relationship with Liberty is outstanding, as reflected in The Princeton Review’s rating Jewell as having an outstanding “town-gown” relationship. Kansas City provides the best in sports and the arts, internships and service opportunities. Jewell is a provider of one of the most important arts programs in the city – the Harriman-Jewell Series. This Series brings the very best classical performers in the world to Kansas City, and Jewell students have the best seats in the house, free of charge. As the institution’s recognition as TIME Magazine’s 2001-02 Liberal Arts College of the Year illustrates, Jewell is unique. Long before classes begin, incoming first-year students are contacted by student mentors who will guide them through the first year of higher learning. Once on campus, the first-year students are embraced by small groups of peers, including student mentors, academic advisors, dean for first-year students, counselors and resident advisers. We prepare students to excel academically, professionally and personally, and to develop as leaders who will have a tremen-dous impact on their world. At William Jewell, students are our first priority, and they comprise the heart of the institution. This priority is just one of the many reasons we have been selected as one of the Colleges of Distinction. As a member of the Annapolis Group, Jewell is numbered among a small group (about 130 nationwide) of selective liberal arts colleges whose commitment is to providing the best liberal arts education possible.
