2. Tolerance of rated capacitanceStandard tolerances and belonging codes for marking tolerances of rated capacitances are as follow:
Tolerance ±20% ±10% ±5% (±2.5%) ±2% (±1.25%) ±1% ±0.5%Code M K J (H) G (E) F D
The narrowest possible tolerance is ± 1 pF (Z).Available tolerances of rated capacitances arestated at type descriptions in catalogue.
3. Temperature dependence of capacitance
Temperature coefficient TCTemperature coefficient TC is defined fortemperature range ϑ1…ϑ2 according to DIN41380 as follows:
)( 123
12
ϑϑ −−=
C
CCTC
C1 - capacitance at temperature ϑ1
C2 - capacitance at temperature ϑ2
C3 - capacitance at temperature (25 ± 10) °CTemperature coefficient for single type ofcapacitors is given in 10-6/°C.
4. Rated voltage UR
The rated voltage UR is the maximum directvoltage which may be applied continuously tothe terminals of a capacitor at any temperaturebetween the lower category temperature and therated temperature.
5. Category voltage UC Category voltage UC is the maximum directvoltage which may be applied to the terminals ofa capacitor at its upper category temperature.Adequate reducing of voltage for temperaturerange between upper rated temperature andcategory temperature is given at single types ofcapacitors in catalogue.
6. Alternating voltage loadingAllowed alternating voltage loading for singletypes is limited to frequency 50 to 60 Hz. Thesum of applied alternating voltage (amplitude)and direct voltage to the terminals of a capacitormust not exceed category voltage UC. In generalmica and plastic foil capacitors are not suitablefor connection to network, exept special versionsof capacitors, which are suitable also for suchpurposes.
7. Allowed self-heating because ofalternating voltage loading
If capacitors are loaded with alternating voltagesof higher frequences with sinusoidal orunsinusoidal shape of alternating voltage, thanself-heating and pulse loading is to consider.Self heating of capacitor (∆ϑ) is in operating ofcapacitor conditioned by belonging power loss
(Pi) and outer surface of capacitor (S), and iscalculated by the following from:
βϑ
⋅=∆
)(
)(
2)(
cmS
mWPiK
where the base for termoplastic case is used
)(1 2cmK
mW
⋅=β
Power loss of capacitor (P i) at loading withsinusoidal voltage of higher frequences iscalculated as follows:
)(2 tan2 fefi CfUP δπ ⋅⋅⋅= ⋅
where:C = capacitance in FUef = effective voltage in Vf = frequence in Hztanδ(f) = loss factor at frequence fPi = power loss in W
At un-sinusoidal alternating voltage it is to bedismantled according to Fourier's analysis tosinusoidal voltages and calculated the powerloss as a sum of single partial sinusoidal powerlosses. For carrying-out the Fourier's analysisthe voltage-time diagram is needed. The sum of temperatures because of self-heating and temperature of surroundings ofcapacitor may be equal or lower than permittedcategory temperature with considering thecategory voltage UC.
8. Pulse loadingThe capacitors charged with un-sinusoidalvoltage pulses with quick rise (high du /dt) willbe loaded with high current pulses. Because ofoverloading of internal contacts and connectionsin capacitor the current must be limited. Theboundary current for single types of capacitorsdepend on:- amplitude and shape of pulse- rated voltage of capacitor- capacitance- geometrical shape of capacitor. At the repeating pulses the current loading willbe limited by self-heating, surroundingtemperature and cooling. The limit of allowed current loading is given withallowed voltage rise in time (du/dt) in V/µs (voltsper microsecond)
dtdu
RCI =max
8
CR = rated capacitance in µFdu/dt = allowed pulse loading in V/µsAt single types of capacitors the data of allowedpulse loading is valuable for unlimited number ofpulses (charging and discharging of capacitors)up to rated voltage Un. Minimum resistance inseries with capacitor is then:
dtduC
U
R
RR/⋅=
where:UR = rated voltage of the capacitor in VCR = rated capacitance in µFR = min. series resistance in Ohm
At the pulses of lower voltage than rated voltagethe given values of allowed pulse loading are tomultiply with the relation factor ratedvoltage/pulse voltage. If the demanded pulse loading of the capacitorcomply with the requests in certain case, thecontrol is needed to be sure that power loss isnot exceeded, resp. self-heating is in area ofallowed pulse loading max. 15°C. In criticalcases the capacitor surface temperature is tomeasure and temperature fall of 5°C insidecapacitor is to consider.
9. Disipation factor tanδδ
Every capacitor has beside desired capacitancealso of her electrical properties, which areshown as constituent elements in following byconnection:
Ls - serial inductanceRs - serial resistnaceRi - insulation resistance (parallelresistance)C - capacitance
The real capacitor has always incorrectnessesas serial inductance Ls and loss resistance Rs
and Ri. The inductance can be reduced but notto zero. At certain frequency fo the capacitanceand inductance reactances are equal:
LoCoωω =1 where oo f⋅= πω 2
At frequencys higher than fo (the resonantfrequency) the inductive component prevail. Theresistance RS is the resistance of the capacitor'swires, transitional resistance of electrodecontacting, the resistance of capacitorelectrodes and polarisation losses in capacitordielectric. Resistance Ri is insulating resistancedepending on insulating properties of dielectricin capacitor.Values Rs and Ri determine losses in capacitorand depend on temperature, frequency, voltageand capacitance and cause heating of capacitor. The resistance Ri is much bigger then theresistance RS so we can change bothresistances only with equivalent serial resistanceof capacitor ESR.The relation between equivalent serialresistance of capacitor ESR and his reactance1/ωC is dissipation factor of capacitor and ismarked with tanδ.
tanδ = ESR. ω.C
The values of dissipation factor (tanδ) are givenat single types of capacitors in catalogue.
10. Insulation resistance Ri
Insulation resistance of capacitor is given asresistance Ri in MΩ or as time constant inseconds Ri . CR = MΩ . µF.The insulation resistance is the relation betweenthe applied direct voltage and the current, afterprecise determined time. The limited values forinsulation resistance are given for testing time60 sec. at 20oC.
Test voltages in accordance to rated voltagesare as follow:
Rated voltage UR < 100 V 100 V ≤ UR < 500 V ≥ 500 VTest voltage 10 V 100 V 500 V

Capacitors: Type KEU Metallized polyester capacitors
As a dielectric high quality polyester film withgood electrical properties is used. Electrodes ofcapacitor are vacuum metallized aluminium. Thethickness of aluminium is approximately 0.01 µmto 0.04µm, so the capacitor is self-regenerativeafter break down. The weak point in dielectricbecause of un-homogene material in somemicroseconds regenerate with energy of currentbow of charged capacitor. In this processmetallized layer of aluminium in the area ofweak point without any damage of dielectricburns out. The weak point is blamelessinsulated. So metallized capacitor withstandsbreakdowns without a permanent short circuitwith considering self healing resp. regeneration. The majority o weak points are cleared duringthe high voltage burning-out in themanufacturing process.Contact surface is made by spraying the parts ofmetal contact material. Leads are electricallywelded on contact surface. The technology andcontrol system in production assure high liabilityof capacitors also in use on low voltages andhigh frequencies. In the case of pulse loading orloading the capacitor with alternative voltage ofhigh gradient of growth is to consider allowedpulse loading du/dt resp. maximal allowedcurrent.

Capacitors: Type KNU Metallized polypropylene capacitors
As a dielectric a high quality polypropylene filmof excellent electrical properties is used.Electrodes are of vacuum evaporated metal ondielectric. Leads are electrically welded oncontact surface of capacitors. So the possibilityfor bad contact or even loss of contact duringthe operation of capacitors is excluded.
