SEDS History• SEDS is an independent, student-based organization
which promotes the exploration and development of space. SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and inspiring people through our involvement in space related projects. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future.

SEDS History – Cont’d• Founded in 1980 at MIT and Princeton.• Consists of students from all levels of education with
a wide range of educational backgrounds working towards a common goal of promoting space.
• SEDS is a chapter based organization with chapters throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
• Permanent National Headquarters for SEDS-USA resides at MIT.

CuSEDS History• Founded in the spring of 2006.• Held the 2006 Canadian Space Summit showcasing
key note space advocates and entrepreneurs.• Entered the first ever Canadian entry into the NASA
sponsored Great Moonbuggy Challenge in April of 2007.
• Participated in SpaceVision 2007 held in Boston, MA, at MIT, the founding location of SEDS.

CuSEDS Lunar Rover Project
• As always, CuSEDS plans to learn from the mistakes and accomplishments of the previous entry to try and best our result at this years race.
• CuSEDS is looking for a dedicated team of individuals from all years and programs to assist in the completion of this project.
• The project involves designing, building, testing and the racing of a two person powered replica lunar rover over an artificial lunar surface at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Project duration: 8 months.

CanSat• This year will mark the first entry for CuSEDS in the
American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) CanSat competition designed to reflect on a small scale a typical aerospace program.
• The competition mission is to design-build-launch a small satellite that shall not exceed 500 grams and fit within a cylindrical payload section of the rocket defined by the envelope of 72mm in diameter and 279mm in length.

CanSat – Cont’d• The cansat must perform a variety of requirements
such as:– Descend at a rate no larger than 4.6m/s and no less than 2.2m/s.– Must abide by specifically outlined safety regulations.– Launch within a certain launch window.– Collect and telemeter information such as its GPS lat and long
position, altitude obtained through non-GPS instruments, cansat “housekeeping” telemetry so as to evaluate the cansat health, etc.
– Must cost no more than $1000US excluding computer hardware and software.

CSS 2008• The Canadian Space Summit is an annual conference
generally covering topics that deal with the next steps in the expansion into space with interesting and established key note speakers, panel sessions and ample networking opportunities.
• This years theme is: ‘Canadian Space Program: What next?’

SAF Concordia• The Student Aerospace Forum put on by CRIAQ (Consortium
for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec) is an annual forum more directed towards the aerospace industry and to help students network and meet industry representatives.
• Theme for this years event is: ‘Challenges of Innovation.’• Completely free event for students, including accomodation,
transportation, some meals and admission to the event.• Date: Sept. 24th & 25th

Yuri’s Night• Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space on
April 12th, 1961 and ever since, this day marks the annual world space party, celebrated in his honor.

Canadian Science and Technology Museum
• Has a permanent astronomy exhibit titled: ‘Canada in Space: Destination Earth,’ which showcases the great achievements of Canada to space exploration.
• Offers a wide range of astronomy programs at a relatively low cost for students:– Stargazing– Digital Astrophotography– Celebrate the International Year of Astronomy 2009– The Universe – Yours to Discover– Group Astronomy and Space Nights– Beginner’s Guide to Astronomy

Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory
• Located at the Canadian Science and Technology Museum and can be utilized through the museum’s Stargazing program.

Digital Astrphotography
• A good opportunity to learn about the basics in astrophotography in the museum’s 3 week course on the motions of stars and planets, the benefits of digital cameras, exposure settings and more.

The Universe – Yours to Discover
• A variety of different programs that span rest of 2008 and 2009 with topics ranging from how to tell time by the stars to taking a closer look at Jupiter – King of planets.

Group Astronomy and Space Nights
• Choice of two programs; learn about how stars are formed, touch real meteorites and view the night sky through the Helen Sawyer Hogg Observatory. Or, take a guided tour through the Canada in Space exhibition. See real satellites Alouette and Hermes, discover what it takes to become an astronaut and find out what Canada contributed to the International Space Station.
• Minimum 20 participants, $3 per person.

Beginner’s Guide to Astronomy
• Learn to find your way through the night sky. Where and how do you look to find constellations, planets and other deep space objects, as well as the right equipment to use.

building, Carleton’s own outdoor observatory and powerful telescope. Join Prof. Dick for some world class stargazing, right here on campus!

Rocket Weekends• A new event for CuSEDS, here we hope to get a number
of teams together to compete in a small rocket building competition. The idea: To use non-environmentally harmful ways to produce the highest flying rocket you can! Of course, all entries must abide by safety regulations so as to keep all competitors safe. Also, all entries must be designed and built on the Saturday of the weekend, while last minute tinkering and launches will determine the weekends winner on the Sunday.

NRC Uplands Tour• The National Research Council here in Ottawa allows
tours of their Uplands campus, where you’ll get to see one of the top ten wind tunnels in the entire world while enjoying a detailed description of its daily functions and other interesting facts about the NRC.

CuSEDS T-Shirt Contest
• In hopes of obtaining a club shirt you can be proud of wearing, this year members are invited to get creative and have some of your art work walking around on campus.
• If you have a great idea for a t-shirt, make a sketch, submit it to an exec. and during a meeting come the new year, we’ll have a vote on the best t-shirt design. Winner gets their art work printed on the club t-shirts and their shirt at no charge.
