Existing Conditions:This was the base of which this project was based off of. An Auto CAD base was created through a scaled image of the site. The work on site was contained by the surrounding property line.

Concepts:These are two concepts that were thought of in group discussions. Ideas were gathered and displayed at a critique.

Located in South Kingstown, R.I., this school was trying to achieve a new green and sustainable campus. This was achieved by the systems that were theorized and creating a more environmentally conscience campus with a new organized layout which included; parking, pedestrian pathways, planting, green energy systems. The following shows the process and development of these ideas in different methods of understanding.

Concept 2:-Redirecting traffic flow-Interior courtyard re-development

Concept 1:-Marked key areas for concern-New green space development-Renewable energy

The end result of the workshop with the help of those who attended, marked up the base maps provided.

U.R.I. students ask students, faculty, and community members about certain issues about the South Kingstown High School campus.

Students from South Kingstown Highschool help U.R.I. students to figure out areas on campus for improvement.

U.R.I. students presented a final site analysis to the workshop group who attended.

South Kingstown High School Workshop:A public workshop was put together to gather ideas and concerns from teachers, students, and the surounding community.

Outdoor Education and Recreation:This project topic was given to our group as a way of focus on the high school campus. Our group focused on all areas of concern on the existing campus. Those concerns were made up of; Entrances, Green Energy Systems, Circulation, Interior Courtyards, and Outdoor Recreation.

This site provided many challeneges due to the surrounding neighbors concerns as well as the grandfathering land of the pre-school that resides on the existing campus.

Site Development:This site allowed for many opportunities for redevelopment. During the design process, many thoughts and ideas were refined. The following shows those ideas in plan view. The outdoor education and recreation allowed for the reconstruction of the existing parking lot, as well as the circulation throughout the site. Outdoor recreation encompasses new ways to enjoy the re-developed green spaces on campus to allow students and faculty to visualize the new systems on campus that all green living practices to be known and shared throughout the community.

The surrounding neighborhood needed a planting buffer for continuous privacy.

The existing campus had no recognizable athletic fields or facilities. This was a task we took pride in, we provided a new turf field with a surrounding quarter mile track with adjacent tennis courts with batting cages and a enclosed building to hold equipment.

Entrance Re-Development:Each entrance has the opportunity to be re-prioritized, these doorways allow you to enter the school and start and end the school day. Each main entrance to the school has been addressed and shown graphically in before and after perspectives.

Parking:The new back parking layout still has the original amount of parking spaces as before. Even after removing almost an acre of pavement the spaces were still saved.

The front parking lot was able to allow 5 more spaces than before. The access The front parking lot was able to allow 5 more spaces than before. The access road surrounding the front parking lot was made into a one way to accomodate a larger green buffer for plantings.

The Hazard school parking lot has been re-designed to accommodate a new one way system to organize the traffic flow.

New Access Road:The new one way access road leading to the back parking lot allows for easy traffic flow during the school hours of operation.

Parking and Circulation:The object of this task was to address the current parking situation and help organize the existing system. The existing parking and circulation caused areas of concern throughout the comunity and the school students and faculty.

Energy:This system requires 1,045 solar panels at 200 watts each; on an average Rhode Island day with 6 hours of continual sunlight this system would generate:

Per Hour: 209,000 watts = 209 /kWh Per Day: 1,254,000 watts = 1254 /kWh Per Year: 4,577,710,000 watts = 4,577,710 /kWh

Funding Opportunity:RIEDC ( Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation), has many grants that could cover this investment. One award is called the Municipal Renewable Energy Investment, this award allocates up to $1,000,000 in total funding.

Pricing:An estimated cost from Alteris Renewables came to about 4 dollars to 4 dollars and 25 cents per watt, installed and delivered: This system would be an estimated total cost of: $836,000-$888,250

Green Energy Building:The overall goal for this area was to create a hub for sustainable learning. The most important aspect of this includes alternative forms of energy, collecting and reusing rainwater, and planting and growing different types of edibles and herbs. This building serves as a learning area for students and faculty, to learn more about renwable energy. This building will control all green energy systems on campus and display the data and results.

Exisiting Conditions:These pictures show the existing condidtions of Woodward Hall and Tyler Hall , the proposed conditions are shown to show how green this space can become with a new innovative parking lot with a captivating landscape. Below the exist-ing condition is the proposed design with the new Pharmacy building that is currently under construction at The University of Rhode Island.

The Woodward Hall quad design was influenced by the new construction of the Pharmacy building at the University of Rhode Island that will connect the two buildings; Tyler hall and woodward hall . This quad incorporates connections to each of the buildings while creating spaces that students can enjoy themselves and ponder about their day. This design unifies the three buildings with circulation, environmentally conscious materials, as well as continuing with the renovations of the campus by bringing in new designs to this historic campus.

San Mateo Ixtatan, GuatemalaCommunity Discovery Park

San Mateo is over 12 hours away from Guatemala City. They have limited provisions and limited medical remedies.

Locus Map

With the understanding of context and capacity for growth, this project begins to unravel the potential of space as a node throughout the community.

Increasing the already historic value and capacity for creating a more vibrant quality of life. This will be collaborated with the knowledge of everyday activities and the accessibility for resources. As well as respecting of the surrounding culture and tradition plays as a symbiotic role in this project thesis.

The school has become the main focus with integrating medicinal plants for the current health issues as well as to increase the capacity to gain knowledge and factual observations. The creation of open space involves adjacent school area while providing a space for the community to learn and take what they’ve learned and use it in their homes. The system of teaching becomes the focus when moving forward; the details of construction, and new practices start to shape a new future for the San Mateo Ixtatan community.

This area could become a stage of learning as well as an area to hold concerts and other festivities for community involvement

Green Wall Module:

Ethnobotany:Plants selected provide medicinal remedies for the community. These plants are indigenous to the area. The plants selected provide helpful remedies to the existing prevelant aliments to the community.

The new planting would allow the practice of ethnobotany to be implemented and used throughout the community. The idea around this was to allow the community to gain from these plants with the ideaof knowing that supplies of medicine are not readily available.

The top level provides an observation deck. This provides views out into the mountains as well as a buffer from the lower level of the site. The patio will consist of cement pavers and will match the existing mate-rials on site with the school.

This project was given as an empty plot of land, recently bought by a developer. My mission was to plan 30 or more lots along an R.O.W. I was given free reign on design and land use

Courtyard Re-Design

Page 24: General portfolio

Existing Conditions:Currently the site is not in use, and has no purpose for its spaces. Plant material has begun to take over and site amenities have started to fail under no maintenance.

This site became the focal point to be re-designed.Picking up where the landscape architecture senior studio at U.R.I. had left, the high school decided to start at its center courtyard and work its way out, into the surrounding landscape. What continued was a new design to allow the space to be user friendly, with a plan to become a micro climate of sustainable outdoor classrooms and landscapes.

Page 25: General portfolio

A site analysis was conducted of the space. As a product of the site analysis, future classroom spaces were chosen due to sunny areas, diversity of space and a concern for vision and sound distractions. Each stage of this project was presented at a public meeting to town officials, parents and teachers of the community.
