The Individual Oral – 10 mn., 25%
To take place during the second year of the programme, with some advance notice
Consist of three parts:
1. Presentation + Teacher’s questions based on visual stimulus (1-2 mn., with 15 mn. preparation)
2. Teacher’s questions based on visual stimulus (2-3 mn.)
3. General Conversation between teacher and student (4-5 mn., topics from core syllabus)
Must be a spontaneous conversation and not be rehearsed.

Conduct of the Oral, Part 1
Student shown two previously unseen visual stimuli for preparation. They choose one.
The visual stimuli should: allow the candidate to describe a scene or situation objectively allow the candidate to offer a personal interpretation of that
scene or situation enable the teacher to lead the candidate into a wider
conversation be relevant to 18 year olds be relevant to the topics prescribed in the core syllabus be culturally related to the language.

Description is a technique which can be taught Should be integrated into the course as soon as
possible Expose to a whole range of visual stimuli Familiarize with prepositions of location Try to make connections with the 3 themes Practice description in every possible context Encourage students to make personal connections
with the pictures

Bringing a Structure into Picture Description
1. Introduction: Type of image, origin?
2. General description: Where are we? When is it? (season, etc). What is happening? What are the people doing?
3. Detailed description: In the foreground, in the center, in the background…
4. Your impressions of the picture: Do you like the picture? Why/why not? In you had a magic wand, would you get into the picture?
What would you do? What would you change?
