tasted in the wine – even the most sensitive Master of Wine would
have difficulty picking out organic wines by taste profile alone. However,
the grower that farms this way has to spend more time and effort in
the vineyard. This extra care and attention most definitely can be tasted
in the wine, even if the lack of pesticide residues cannot!
And biodynamics? Often portrayed as ‘moon cycles witchcraft’ or
‘organics-plus-plus’; something in between is closer to the truth. The
biodynamic grower adopts an holistic approach to the entire land – as
opposed to just the target crop – and as such one has a ready made
riposte to those who point to studies showing organic fruit is no more
healthy than non-organic produce; they miss the point entirely! It is
not about the health of the produce, but the health of the land itself.
Biodynamism (and indeed organics) embarks on a process where the
land bequeathed from father to son and mother to daughter is in a
better and healthier state than when they started. Pair this with the
fact that it is the terroir that makes interesting and great wines, then
anything that nurtures and cares for this golden egg laying goose should
be encouraged.
Therefore not only do we believe the green movements, under
whatever banner, should be supported for the future of great wines, but
in these days of sustainability and the Toyota Prius, it is a value add that
the drinker can readily buy into.
We would be in denial if we said that wine drinkers are spending
as much as they did in those heady days of 2007. For those of your
customers who are spending less, but not wanting to trade down or
compromise, we have trimmed prices as best we can – 150 of the
wines in this list – and highlighted wines that can be served by the glass
or carafe on The Short List on page 1.
Tom Heywood Lonsdale
Managing Director
A year ago the country and the rest of the world was in the
midst of a financial tsunami. Everyday we are still handling the
repercussions, but a clear trend has emerged: the importance of
perceived value.
Mainstream retailers have interpreted this change in mindset to
be one of cost and reacted with deeper and deeper discounting.
This is surely a blinkered approach where the reduced cost does
nothing for the value of the product, which by association has
been reduced too. Value has not been created as you pay less for
a lesser product. Genesis have taken a route of discussing these
issues with our many growers and finding ways of trimming costs,
but still providing value. This is no easy task with the weaker
pound and the government’s overly enthusiastic approach to
increasing duty.
Value in our eyes is about offering a product and proposition that
has something of worth and integrity. Genesis makes a concerted
effort to search out ‘growers’ rather than ‘producers’. This is not
simply semantics but a statement of how these hands-on farmers,
who craft their wines out of the land, are able to produce real
wine of worth and substance. Grower wines are the opposite
of mass produced wines, where more investment is given to the
look of the bottle and the label than the actual contents; surely
the wine itself is the acid test of value? The recent trend among
the public for allotments, grow-your-own vegetables and famers’
markets, suggests there is a growing and receptive audience for
this approach in the UK.
Genesis fully supports sustainable farming methods, a fact that is
illustrated throughout this list with the prevalence of B and O
markers against many growers. We believe that this is the way of
the future and that in 20 to 30 years all wines of note will be made
this way. In the meantime it is another element of added value to
take to the customer. Granted, just because grapes for wine have
been grown organically, does not mean that that in itself can be

ChampagneChampagne Dehours, CerseuilA fourth generation independent grower, Jérôme Dehours, along with his brother-in-law Jean-Marc Laisne, has produced a marvellous range of
Champagnes from their numerous parcels of vines split between Mareuil-le-Port, Oeuilly and Troissy. The non-vintage white has a light, delicate nose
with apple and citrus notes – a perfect aperitif. The rosé has a very pale rose petal colour that again reflects the delicate palate that is a blend between
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a larger percentage of Pinot Meunier. Jérôme has been a great find for us as his wines are not only of high quality but also
extremely well priced.

Champagne Agrapart, AvizePascal Agrapart owns ten hectares in Avize and the neighbouring villages. With a majority of Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards the wines are very classy
and reflect the quality of the vineyard work he puts in. In a recent issue of the Revue des Vins de France, Agrapart Champagnes were ranked among
the best Grande Marques Cuvées, and the ‘Les 7 Crus’, a blend of seven different Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, scored 92 points on the other side
of the Atlantic. Very exciting growers’ Champagne.

Champagne Maillart, EcueilThe quality of Nicolas Maillart’s straight non-vintage has always been very high and such great value as well. As a Pinot Noir dominant-grower (in
contrast to Agrapart’s Chardonnay based wines, and Dehours’ predilection with Pinot Meunier) his wines show plenty of red fruit aromas and depth.

LoireWe take a lot of pride in our list of growers from the Loire, and while the region may not have the blue chip status of Bordeaux, or the exclusive
nature of Burgundy, the area has more than its fair share of superstars: Domaine Didier Dagueneau, Clos Rougeard, Alphonse Mellot. One could very
easily get the Loire Eye Spy book out and start ticking off all those that Genesis lists. Though diverse in style they all have a similar theme running
through them that is in tune with the drinkers of here and now – they are refreshing and moreish, with incisive fruit flavours and definite sense of place.
The only downside is the growing number of wines on allocation. Many of these growers are now so successful that demand vastly outstrips supply and
we recommend that you contact a member of our sales team to secure wines from the more sought after among them.
O Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy, SancerreAnother tragic loss to the wine world that leaves a gaping hole: Nicolas Reverdy was killed in a terrible accident in late 2007, leaving that year’s wine as
the last made by his hands. And extremely good they are too now that they are in bottle – a fitting tribute. However, his bother Pascal has taken over
the running of the property and continues the hard work done over the past fifteen years that has established this domaine as one of the best in the
region.

Masson Blondelet, Pouilly FuméWhat do you do when you make wines in an appellation that is home to one of the true, all be it eccentrically incomparable greats of all time, Didier
Dagueneau? Become disillusioned that you will never be noticed, or work doubly hard to create the very best possible? It is of course the second route
that Jean-Michel Masson takes and as a result we think this has to be one of the domaines to follow in the Loire. With a fast growing and fanatical
following these are delightful and impressive wines that should be tried now before they achieve a cult status of their own.

Vignoble des Bois Vaudon, TouraineThe young and talented Jean-François Merieau is making superb wines from his large 50 hectare property in the Cher. Jean-François is one of the rare
producers in this unfashionable area, who is working and picking manually to achieve lower yields and higher concentration. This has a cost but the
results are well worth the effort. The wines are well defined, showing great typicity but with a modern twist and super drinkability. Not to mention
some very attractive labels.

B François Chidaine, HusseauWith all the fashionable fuss surrounding Sauvignon Blanc and the selective amnesia with respect to the Muscadet-overdosing of the 1980s, the central
appellations of the Loire are often overlooked. However the terrific range of wines of François Chidaine from Montlouis and Vouvray are the best find
we have made in the Loire in the past four years. The wines show well young but have the stuffing to get better with age; the Baudoin and Bouchet
cuvées in particular show some ageworthy sweetness. In short a grower to get excited about.

O Domaine Didier Dagueneau, Pouilly FuméThe wine world is still spinning from the freakish and premature death of the Master of the Loire Didier Dagueneau. Undisputedly the finest grower in
the Loire, Didier was in the vanguard of groundbreaking producers in the whole of France. The world even. He will be truly missed by us at Genesis
and the wine drinking world, however the show goes on and the 2007 wines released now were of course made by Didier and as such were been
snapped up; please contact the sales team to be considered for any allocations of the soon to be offered 2008s.

Philippe Delesvaux, LayonPhilippe Delesvaux’s reputation is growing year after year, not least because despite the undoubted quality of his wines, the prices are shockingly good
value for money. His Coteaux du Layons are sublime, with just enough freshness to balance the natural sweetness. The straight Layon is always hugely
popular and incredible value, but lovers of sweet wines fight over the limited quantities of the other cuvées, especially the immensely rich and unctuous
Séléction de Grains Nobles.

B Domaine de l’Ecu, Sèvre et MaineGuy Bossard was, and still is, one of France’s pioneers of biodynamics – he has run his domaine according to those principles for nearly two decades.
As you would expect of one who is dedicated fully to a holistic approach to viticulture, Bossard names his Muscadet after the soil composition of the
vineyard, hence the geological persuasion. As well as great expressions of terroir these wines are fantastically ageworthy. This year we also introduce
l’Ecru’s Gros Plant – a better priced partner for oysters you will not find.

Domaine Guiberteau, SaumurRomain Guiberteau is a young and promising producer coached by Nady Foucault of Clos Rougeard. The style is very close to that of Clos Rougeard,

Clos Rougeard, SaumurHard to disagree with the term Loire First Growth when discussing the wines of Clos Rougeard from Jean-Louis and Bernard Foucault – only

B Alphonse Mellot, SancerreToday the wines of the best estate in Sancerre are made by the nineteenth generation of the Mellot family, Alphonse Junior, with his father Alphonse
Senior on hand to pass on his vast experience. The whites they make are some of the most complex and intense Sauvignons around owing to the high
average age of the vines and varying degrees of oak used in the élevage. As for the reds, these are as close as you can get to fine Burgundy in the Loire
and as such need time to reach their full potential.

O Domaine Pellé, Menetou SalonMenetou is definitely coming out of the shadow from his its more illustrious Sauvignon producing neighbours, Pouilly Fumé and Sancerre. And if you
want to know what this appellation’s superstar equivalent of Mellot and Dagueneau is then look no further than Domaine Pellé. The talented Julien
Zernott, along with Anne Pellé, has taken this winery from strength to strength. Of course the fact that Julien is great friends with Alphonse Mellot
doesn’t hurt when it comes to picking up the odd trick or two.

Burgundy
Burgundy epitomises Genesis’ approach to our growers: invariably small operations with an intense affinity towards the land and an overriding sense
of place. Yes, Burgundy can be mercurial but the region has never been on better form and produced more consistently than it does now; be it the
heights of the wonderful 2005 vintage or the contrasting 2006s and 2007s. The artisan approach of Burgundy producers leads to small, if not miniscule
allocations and many of the wines that we list do not make it into print on a price list such as this that must last for half the year.
Our En Primeur offer, released in January every year, is often the best way to secure stocks of the more sought after wines from the likes of: Domaine
Denis Mortet, Domaine Sylvie Esmonin, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier, Domaine Henri Gouges, Domaine Guy Roulot, Domaine Louis Carillon,

O Domaine Billaud-Simon, ChablisBillaud Simon is now consistently producing some of the most beautiful wines in the appellation which has been confirmed by the worldwide success
of the domaine. Every wine from the simple Chablis to the best Grand Cru is full of mineral expression and class, with an almost electric tension and
structure. However skilful Bernard Billaud is in the winery though, even he cannot control the weather gods – 2007 saw significant losses owing to hail
and so quantities for this vintage are down on what we would normally expect. Look out for the 2008s.

from lesser famed Aligoté, Sauvignon de Saint Bris and Petit Chablis. The Crémant is a new and very welcome addition this year to our sparkling range.

O Domaine Vincent Dauvissat, Chablis
Vincent Dauvissat is one of France’s best producers and worthy of the Fine Wine moniker. He makes Chablis that requires time to evolve and reach the
dizzying heights that set him apart from the rest. His top wines will, in good vintages, last well past their twentieth birthdays and even the supposedly
basic ones can take three to four years to evolve. These wines are unfortunately only available in tiny quantities so please speak to your salesperson for
information on allocations of the 2008s.

Laurent Tribut, PoinchyAn apprentice to the master so to speak; Laurent is Vincent Dauvissat’s brother in law, and makes wine in a similar top quality vein. He has learned well
from his great mentor and utilises older oak barrels which create harmonious and accessible wines from the outset without sacrificing the flinty aspects
and startling minerality of his terroir. Fine Chablis.

to experience the De Montille style without having to join the lengthy waiting list for an allocation of the domaine wines.

finish.

O Jean Thévenet, Clessé
Jean and his son Gautier keep the Thévenet tradition going. For the past 25 years the domaine has been making exceptional wines using simple
methods of working their vineyards: eschewing machines and chemicals, and picking late from low yielding vines. The estate is split in three parts
– Domaine de la Bongran, the oldest part, Domaine Emilian Gillet, and the most recent addition Domaine de Roally bought in 2000. All are situated
around the village of Quintain in the Viré Clessé appellation.

Rhône
For all intents and purposes the Rhône Valley is where Genesis’ heart is: the company’s first En Primeur campaign, the 2003 Rhônes, is what put us
on the wine merchant map. The dual nature of the region geographically (North–South), viticulturally (Grenache or Syrah) and in the appellations
(established ACs versus the new up-and-coming spots) makes this a forever interesting and dynamic region. Last but not least, while the top wines of
more illustrious regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy require deep pockets, the cru wines of the Rhône still represent good value for money. That
said, the cat is untying the bag and the most recent vintage, 2007, was a stellar one and has been received with particular fanfare and acclaim. Some
of more desirable cuvées are on tight allocations and are best sourced when we release our previously mentioned En Primeur campaign in November
each year. This includes the likes of René Rostaing, Domaine de Marcoux, Clos du Cailou, Domaine de la Mordorée, Pegau and Vieille Julienne.
Northern Rhône
N Natacha Chave, Tain l’HermitageChave by name and Chave by nature – Natacha is the younger sister of the prominent winemaker Yann Chave and it is obvious that a nose for quality
parcels of vines runs in the family. Striking out on her own only a couple of years ago she makes just two wines for now under the Aléofane moniker: a
Saint Joseph from a small 1.5 hectare plot, and a debutant vintage Crozes Hermitage from old vines. A star has been born and definitely one to follow
with excitement.

Domaine Colombier, Tain l’HermitageThe Viale brothers only relatively recently started to make their wines themselves – up until 1991 they sold all their grapes on – and indeed half
their 20 hectares are devoted to fruit farming. However, part timers they are not, and in the past 18 years they have shot to the top of the Crozes
Hermitage tree and are now considered one of the best producers. They own a hectare and half of straight Hermitage vines but their Crozes surpasses
many growers wines from the more illustrious appellation.

B Domaine Ferraton, Tain l’HermitageThis fourth generation family-owned domaine is now in the hands of Samuel Ferraton. The vineyards in Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage are farmed
biodynamically and little intervention takes places in the winery either: only a light touch of oak is used and the final wines are neither fined nor
filtered. This is the first year Genesis is listing the wines of Domaine Ferraton and we are excited to be working with another such talented producer.

Pierre Gaillard, MallevalHaving cut his teeth by working for Guigal in the 1980s (Pierre had the equally arduous and loving task of tending the La Turque vineyard) and actually
owning more red vines than white, you would expect Pierre Gaillard to have made his reputation on Côte Rôties and Saint Josephs. Not so; the name
Gaillard is interchangeable with Condrieu wines of the very best quality. As well as the Northern Rhône, the ever busy vigneron has projects in Banyuls
(see pages 24) and Faugères.

René Rostaing, AmpuisRené continues to be one of the great characters in the Rhône valley and his Côte Rôties are world famous. His passion and character are evident in
his winemaking and his rules are simple: lots of hard work in the vineyard followed by minimal intervention in the cellar, with gentle extraction and
skilful handling of oak. The results are incontestable. He produces wines that are fine, medium to full bodied, delicate and perfectly balanced, that while
providing immediate pleasure, have the structure to age for fifteen plus years.

François Villard, Saint MichelFrançois’ operation is a great example of the modern Rhône; a relative newcomer (he started in the wine game just over 15 years ago) there has been
extensive investment in his winery and cuverie, and selection of the parcels of grapes is exemplarily. The resulting wines are then treated to the best
wood money can buy; be it new or older. A more expressive, passionate and driven vigneron you will not come across.

Domaine Denis Alary, CairanneThough Cairanne does not have the cachet of some of the more well-known southern appellations it is one of the best of the Côtes du Rhône Villages.

O Domaine d’Antonin, Côtes du LuberonGuillaume Gros is a truly passionate winemaker, whose star would surely be shining far brighter if he was making wine in a more glamorous location

provençal herbs and they have remarkable richness and complexity, especially the Côté Terroir.

Paul Blanc, Costières de NîmesThe Paul Blanc wines are produced at the Mas Carlot estate run by Nathalie Blanc-Mares. Costières de Nîmes is one of those slightly schizophrenic
appellations that is often listed with southern French and Languedoc wines, even though it is situated in the Rhône delta. It is possibly the
preponderance of Syrah planted that tips the balance in the favour of the south, and this is reflected in blends of Natalie’s rosés and reds. The whole
range has impressive complexity for the price point and great drinkability.

Henri Bonneau, Châteauneuf du PapeHenri Bonneau is one of the last of the great winemaking icons in France. The wines which are aged in oak for a long time can look prematurely old
but in actual fact gain in freshness and structure over the years. They can last for several decades and outgun many other Châteauneuf du Papes that
promised more in their youth. Les Rouliers is a Vin de Table made from both declassified Châteauneuf and another well located vineyard across the
Rhône. It has all the hallmarks of the great man’s wines. Other wines can be found on our Fine Wine list.

B Domaine Chaume-Arnaud, VinsobresA relatively large estate situated in the village of Vinsobres, Chaume-Arnaud is run using biodynamic principles. Producers of a beautiful white blend
that is head and shoulders above most other Southern Rhône whites, their reds see no oak in their élevage. The results are wines with a purity and
freshness that make them great drinking at an early age. We were introduced to this domaine by Bruno Gaspard of Clos du Caillou; kudos to Bruno for

B Domaine Gramenon, MonbrisonBurgundy analogies are frequently bandied about in relation to various wines from the Rhône and elsewhere but rarely do they apply more than of the
wines of Michelle Laurent at this esteemed domaine. Made biodynamically with minimal use of sulphur, if any at all, they have a wonderful freshness and
precision to them. It doesn’t hurt either that the vineyards are situated high up in just about the most northerly corner of the Southern Rhône, with
the colder nights inducing feminine-tinged elegance as opposed to muscular power. Great wines and Genesis favourites.

B Domaine de Marcoux, Châteauneuf du PapeThe sororal double act of Catherine and Sophie Armenier are as grounded and unpretentious as they come. Catherine’s area of responsibility lies in the
vineyards, using biodynamic techniques, while Sophie’s domain is in the cellar. There she uses large vats and not a centimetre of new oak. The result has
been more than one of the legendary 100 point marks from Robert Parker, but these highly sought after wines are not super extracted monsters; they
are extremely pleasurable with feminine elegance and graceful poise. Genesis favourites through and through.

O Domaine de La Mordorée, Tavel
Having featured in his own French TV programme Christophe Delorme is well and truly a superstar winemaker. But it was not for his rugged good

Santa Duc, GigondasCompromise is not really in the vocabulary of Yves Gras of Santa Duc, the benchmark producer for Gigondas. That said, a change of style has taken
place over the past year or so with the adoption of less intense extraction and marathon cuvaisons. Instead the wines appear more approachable with
overt fruit character. Yves is still the same robust and direct man, but his wines now have a broader appeal – surely a good thing for this village.

B Domaine de La Vieille Julienne, Châteauneuf du PapeThe word ‘old’ in the name of this estate is very apt: with a history going back over 100 years it has access to some ancient vine fruit in its vineyards to
the north of the appellation. The man in charge of this legacy, and some of the most sought-after wines in Châteauneuf du Pape, is Jean-Paul Daumen.
The vines are farmed biodynamically and there is minimum use of sulphur and fining in the winery. The results are pure expressions of the deep-rooted
vines and their grapes.

O Clos de l’Anhel, CorbièresPhilippe Matthias and Sophie Guiraudon continue to make wines way above their appellation status. Despite having to work overtime (they also manage

Grenache. Another dimension to the domaine is its situation near Sainte Anne du Castellet, which is one of the highest parts of the appellation and
thus gives an extra dose of freshness to the wines.

B Clos Marie, Pic Saint LoupChristophe Peyrus started making wine in 1995 and in that time has progressed from organic to biodynamic methods. In just 14 years the domaine has
become one of the leaders in the region and indeed further afield, featuring on top restaurant wine lists. They are big, concentrated wines that punch
well above their weight for the appellation. The reds are blends of Grenache and Syrah, with the Metairie having some old vine Carignan too. We are
very excited about this grower and its wines should not be missed.

Mas Amiel, MauryMas Amiel is the flagship domaine in the Roussillon. Located in Maury, an appellation within an appellation (Riversaltes) the estate can trace its history
back to 1816, and for all but the last few years was famous for its unique fortified wines. Recently though, under Olivier Decelle’s ownership, Amiel has
started to make some of the best table wines in the south using the plethora of ancient vine stock to hand. The range is extensive with Grenache Blanc
and Gris, Muscat, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan among the grapes used. Some of the resulting wines are very classic; others quirky
and unusual. All are fabulous.

O Domaine Mouscaillo, LimouxDomaine Mouscaillo’s five hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, located in Roquetaillade, on one of the highest points in the area, are run organically
by Pierre Fort and his wife. Having run Château de Tracy in Pouilly sur Loire for many years, Pierre decided to go back to his family roots. The style
is rich and almost Burgundian but with fabulous acidity due to the altitude. Large 600 litre barrels are used so there is no overt oakiness either. They
perennially receive accolades from the French wine press.

O Château de La Négly, Coteaux du LanguedocWhereas Mas Amiel is the flag bearer for Roussillon, La Négly, owned by the Rosset family, is arguably the Languedoc’s counterpart and makes some
of the greatest wines in the south. Surprisingly close to the Mediterranean, it is located in the subregion of La Clape: a chalk packed grand cru of the
south. The whites are an pithy blend of regional grapes with lots of minerality, floral notes and a little honey. The red Falaise is astounding value for
money: an ageworthy, fruit filled Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre blend.

B Domaine de l’Oustal Blanc, MinervoisClaude Fonquerle looks after this ten hectare property in partnership with Philippe Cambie, a leading oenologist in Châteauneuf du Pape. Their
collaboration started in 2002, and fitting for the southern Rhône link the main variety in the wines is Grenache but judicious additions of Syrah,
Cinsault and old vine Carignan gives extra complexity; though the K is virtually all Carignan and one of the best versions we have tasted. They have
received more accolades and awards than any other domaine in the Languedoc, including Wine of the Year with one of their 2005s.

Domaine du Puech-Noble, Coteaux du LanguedocDomaine du Puech-Noble is the southern property of René Rostaing, the great Côte Rôtie producer (page 19). The Domaine is situated nine miles
outside of Nîmes on the way to Montpellier. Here René uses his vast experience and the same uncompromising techniques from his Rhône property to
produce wines of great class and elegance. The reds are Syrah-based blends that have the power and structure of the region, but with added finesse and
depth. The white is a full-bodied Grenache Blanc blend with impressive creamy citrus and mineral notes.

B Borie la Vitarèle, Saint ChinianFounded in 1990 this property has now established itself as one of the leading Saint Chinian producers. Using varying combinations of Grenache, Syrah
and Mourvèdre, all cultivated using biodynamic techniques, Jean François Izarn knows how to express the differences between his terroirs. The Terres

element. A reoccurring theme of freshness runs through all the wines.

O Les Jardins de Babylone, Jurançon
This is a typically exciting side project founded by the late, great, Didier Dagueneau. A four hectare vineyard located in an natural amphitheatre with
a prime view of the Pyrénées, it produces some of the country’s finest sweet wine. Using Petit Manseng’s natural acidity, the wine is delicate and
refreshing with fabulous balance. Rather than trying to pack as much sugary sweetness in the bottle as possible, the aim instead is for refinement and
finesse. The results are simply stunning. Unfortunately the grapes are picked at such low yields that the quantities produced are very small.

Bordeaux
Vignobles GarcinThe owners of no less than four Châteaux – Clos L’Eglise (Pomerol), Barde-Haut (Saint Emilion), Branon (Pessac-Léognan) & Haut Bergey (Pessac-
Léognan) – mother and daughter Sylviane Cathiard and Hélène Garcin have catapulted themselves into the Bordeaux big league. In conjunction with
Hélène’s husband Patrice Levêque, Team Garcin has transformed the properties by investing heavily in vineyard management and the cellars themselves.
Their efforts have most definitely born fruit with critical acclaim and high scoring accolades aplenty. Clos L’Eglise is a concentrated and silky Pomerol
with a string of stellar performances since 1997. Château Barde-Haut shows the juicy, warm and approachable style of modern Saint Emilion that is
now so much in demand. Château Haut Bergey has the benchmark gravelly notes of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, with added suppleness and charm.
Château Branon has a very small production (on average 750 cases per annum), and more often than not sells out En Primeur. It is a bigger, more
concentrated and muscular version of the Haut Bergey. The second wines, Etoile de Bergey and Esprit de l’Eglise, offer a more immediate reflection of
the Grand Vins and are exceptional value for money.

As well as our flagship collection from the Garcin stable we also continue to list a range of less celebrated, but equally classy clarets that not only
represent impressive value for money but illustrate the new wave of conscientious and quality-driven properties on both banks. La Fleur de Bouard
continues to win fans, while Château Cissac is a more traditional classic. Château Richlieu improves with each vintage, and is on a par qualitatively with
many of its grander neighbours in Saint Emilion and Pomerol. Château Teyssier is owned by the Bordelais-baiting Englishman Jonathan Maltus, who has
invested heavily over the last 15 years in pursuit of making some of the best wines in Bordeaux.
For the latest classified growths and fine wine releases we conduct an En Primeur Offer each spring (April through June depending on when the
Châteaux release their prices). For older vintages please request a copy of our monthly Fine Wine List that is has an ever evolving line up of quality

personality of their own. Wild and exciting in a creatively bohemian kind of way, the Tissot’s property consists of 35 hectares of biodynamically

Alvear, Montilla-MorilesFrom the Adelucian south of Spain, Montilla’s fortified wines have some similarities with Sherry, but they are far less well known, though it’s worth
noting that ‘Amontillado’ means ‘after the style of Montilla’. One of the differences is that Pedro Ximenez is the grape of choice for both dry and sweet
cuvées with not a splash of Palomino to be seen. Family owned, Alvear produces a wide range of styles. The Fino En Rama is zesty and pithy; the Carlos
VII is a classic Amontillado with strong nutty notes and extra length. The Oloroso is richer and sweeter with great complexity and is suited to desserts
and cheeses. The Solera was started in 1927 and is still being maintained while the Añada is made with sun dried grapes from exceptional vintages. All
in all these are beautifully made and distinctive wines that deserve a wider audience.

Portal Del Montsant, MontsantWhile the wines of trendy neighbour Priorat have gained a cult following, Montsant seems to be quietly going about its business almost unnoticed. The
catch is that the DO of Montsant envelopes the whole vineyard area of Priorat and has just as many amphitheatre-like vineyards with ancient vines.
Indeed the brains behind Portal, including oenologist Ricard Rofes, have a sister project called Portal Del Priorat where they are doing the same thing
there: resuscitating abandoned vineyards then vinify the stunning produce. These wines, including a flavour packed rosado, are simply amazing and
arguably, pound for pound, the most exciting on the list.

Valtuille, BierzoBierzo’s grape of choice is Mencia, and no that is not another regional name for Tempranillo! Probably its nearest comparison, if you had to make one,
is to Cabernet Franc and there are some similarities in the smoky hardwood aromas. However, the wines from Valtuille are riper and more generous
than those of the Loire. Just to the east of the province of Galicia Bierzo is influenced by Atlantic weather systems not the Mediterranean – this can

N Quinta do NovalOne of the grand old names of the port industry, Noval also make some very impressive table wines too. The fact that Christian Seely (the man behind
Bordeaux second grwoth Pichon Baron) gives more than just a helping hand with the quinta’s eponymous grand vin, produces an extremely polished fine
wine that has already induced a devoted cult following. Allocations though are tiny. However, a good dose of Syrah in the Cedro (around 50%) means that
the wine takes the ‘vinho regional’ designantion (Portugal’s equivalent of Vin de Pays and IGT), as opposed to the more illustrious Douro, but results in
a deliciously berried wine that feels more Mediterranean than Atlantic. These are a mighty impressive pair and a must try. Various Ports are available too;

Stefano Inama, SoaveStefano is a man on a mission to create the very best he can, practically banning the words mediocrity and second best from his vocabulary. His family
owned estate is located in the heart of Soave, a region with a reputation for white wines that are simply crisp and refreshing; full stop. Not Signore
Inama’s: his are the best in the region showing depth, interest and complexity. Dismissed Soave in the past? Try Stefanos and be prepared to have your

De Stefani, VeneziaThe De Stefani family has been making wines in the Veneto for four generations. Their estate is located 50km from the Alpine foothills and 20km from
the sea; a location that provides an ideal microclimate for very aromatic, fresh wines. The Pinot Grigios are all of superior quality showing plenty of
fruitiness with hints of almonds, apple and a fresh, zesty, dry finish. The Prosecco comes from the hills north of Treviso and is an informal sparkling
alternative to Champagne.

Mascarello, BaroloMauro Mascarello is a fourth generation family winemaker that now almost wholly owns the Monprivato vineyard in Barolo. So although not quite
a monopole, there is no other wine that matches its stature, elegance and style. It has power and length with complex notes of tar and dark fruits
with spicy hints. As you would imagine with a single vineyard producer in Italy’s most prestigious village, quantities are tiny so please contact your
salesperson for further details on stock and allocations.

Le Cinciole, ChiantiWe are really excited to be working with Le Cinciole and it seems the wider world is too with the estate recently winning its first Tre Bicchiere award
from the Gambero Rosso. This small property is increasingly in the limelight, producing trademark Chianti Classico from their high altitude vineyards in
Panzano.

Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona, MontalcinoBased on the Sant’Antimo side of the region, the estate benefits from early ripening vineyards; a real plus in cooler vintages as they can pick their
grapes up to one month before the vineyards located on the Montalcino hill. A lot of work has also gone into the vineyards and as a result the estate
regularly receives ‘Tre Bicchiere’ in the Gambero Rosso guide, a tremendous accolade.

Villa Medoro, AbruzzoThe glamorous Federica Moricone runs Villa Medoro, a 92 hectare estate within sight of the Adriatic that sold its grapes on until the late 1990s when
it started to make wine itself. Pairing indigenous varieties with modern winemaking the wines are very appealing but with some serious complexity
too; the 2006 Montepulciano was awarded Tre Bicchieri in the Gambero Rosso 2009. The whites are just as interesting: the 100% Trebbiano is as spicy
and floral as we have come across with this variety, while the Chimera takes some of this Trebbiano and blends it with Falanghina – one of the most
intriguing combinations on our whole list.

N Saladini Pilastri, SpinetoliCount Saladini Pilastri’s can trace the history of his estate back 300 years, and for all of this time it has produced wine. Then in the 1970s new vines
were planted and production was stepped up for export. The Rosso Piceno Superiore DO, is located just to the north of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
DOC on the Adriatic coast and makes use of the same varieties. This wine sees Montepulciano blended with 30% Sangiovese and aged for 18 months.

Terredora, MontefuscoThe Mastroberardino family has been instrumental in the survival and revival of some great indigenous grape varieties such as Greco. After a family
split in the 1990s, Walter and his sons kept hold of the top sites and have continued to produce stunning wines on Campania’s complex, volcanic soils.
This Greco from the single vineyard of Loggia della Serra has to be one of the very best the region has to offer, while the Fiano from the Terre di Dora

Fattoria La Monacesca, MatelicaThe property’s name has its roots in a small monastery that was set up on the site 900 years ago by a group of Benedictine monks. It is surrounded by
the Maceratesi hills and as such is sheltered from the winds coming off the Adriatic. In pre-historic times this area was a huge salt lake and the resulting
salt deposits have led to the vineyards being extremely mineral rich. That flinty herbaceousness comes though in this wine. Subtle, unoaked and citrusy,
this Verdicchio is a great choice as a light aperitif.

O Weingut Vereinigte Hospitien, MoselThe roots of Germany’s viticultural history can be traced back to he United Hospices (Vereinigte Hospitien); not only were there Roman wine cellars
built on the same site dating back to 330 AD, but the first known evidence of Riesling cultivation in 1464 was written in a log belonging to Saint Jacob’s
Hospital, a precursor of today’s United Hospices. Today this ancient institution has access to some superb vineyards along the Mosel and the Saar rivers
with which they produce a large quality range of varying wine styles.

Josef Leitz, RheingauIt is another J Leitz than runs the estate nowadays – Josef’s grandson Johannes. The family’s vineyards were left untended during his father’s time,
but his mother kept use of the land to grow cut flowers and asparagus. However, Johannes’ passion and interest now more than makes up for those
intermediary years. He works only with wild yeasts and leaves the wines on their fine lees until the spring following the harvest. The results are wines
with extra depth and richness than the norm.

O Weingut Geyerhof, KremstalThere was a time when Austrian wines were even more unfashionable than their German neighbour’s, but not so any more. It could be said their
speciality grape Grüner Veltliner is one of the first wines a sommelier will pencil into a new list. Weingut Geyerhof owners, Josef and Ilse Maier farm
their land organically and use varied picking times and lees aging to create a portfolio with a range of characteristics: the Rosensteig is the lightest and
most herbaceous; Hoher Rain is fruitier and riper; while the Steinleithn is the firmest and most ageworthy.

B Matetic Vineyards, San AntonioChile has a strong case to be called the new Australia: a producer of modern fruit filled wines that deliver time after time at entry level and rarely
disappoint. Matetic Vineyards need not apply for this definition, because they are head shoulders above the cheap and cheerful brigade and can easily be
considered in the top handful of growers in the country. The all mod cons estate located in the San Antonio Valley and within spitting distance of the
Pacific coast, is cultivated biodynamically (NB the EQ in the name stands for equilibrium and eludes to the holistic balance struck in the vineyards). It is
the maritime influence that maintains the freshness and life in these wines. The Sauvignon is zippy and limey, the Gewürtz spicy, and the Syrah is very
much North Rhône in style with herbs and spices aplenty.

N Mt Beautiful, North CanterburyThe new addition to our Kiwi range is new in more ways than one: it is a first in the UK for the North Canterbury region of the Cheviot Hills
– located on the eastern side of the South Island between Marlborough and Waipara. Set up by David Teece and family this is not just a back garden
project. They have set it up to produce world beating wine and put a new region on the map. The Sauvignon is very fresh and zesty, the Riesling is dry
and feminine, while the Pinot is great value for money. We’re very excited to be working with such a new and dynamic grower.

Michelle RichardsonHaving cut her teeth heading up the winemaking team for New Zealand’s most successful and innovative producer, Michelle decided time was right
to set up her own project. What you get is a combination of the country’s very best winemaking skill plus knowledge of where the best grapes and
vineyards are. It is this second element that gives her eponymous label an added edge – she is not married to sourcing all her wines from one site and
so is able to vary region depending on the variety. In this case the Sauvignon and Chardonnay come from Marlborough and the two Pinots from Otago.
The results are spectacular – sensuous, hedonistic and really complete.

as little intervention as possible, he allows the 18 different rootstocks to show their best potential by carefully matching them to the most appropriate

Dutschke, Barossa ValleyWayne Dutschke’s vineyards have been in the family for three generations. His grandfather Oscar Semmler started planting in the Barossa Valley back in
the 1930s, and for much of this time the grapes were used for making sweet styles of wine, or simply sold on. More recently Wayne decided to grub up
some of the inherited vines and replant with Shiraz and other quality varieties. However, Wayne still keeps up the family tradition and makes fortified
wines too. They represent some of the very best sweet wines in the world regularly scoring huge points from international critics. If you love this style
of wine then they are not to be missed.

Lantana & WillandraNew to our range are two labels from Trentham Estate who are based in New South Wales. Both offer great value for money, especially considering
the droughts and hammering the vineyards in Australia have taken of late. Made in an easy drinking style yet with plenty of flavour the Lantanas are
typically Australian bi-varietal blends, while the Willandra, named after the ancient lake system to the north of the state, is a touch more complex and
defined. All deliver plenty of bang for your buck.

South Africa
Raats Family Wines, MalmesburyThe Raats family are one of the famous and established names of the Cape and are champions of Chenin Blanc, also known as Steen in South Africa.
The relatively abundant old vine stocks of this variety from the Loire has many commentators suggesting South Africa should makes this their speciality.
Proprietor Bruwer Raats would agree. The root of the cuvée name ‘Original’ is because Bruwer Raats wanted to turn away from the habit of over-
oaking the variety and return to the original fruit flavours of the Chenin grape, aiming for pineapple, apple and citrus flavours in his wine. Continuing the
Loire theme the Cabernet Franc is a rich and spicy example with hints of tea leaf and smoke. Powerful but with good freshness and a grippy finish.

O Brewer-Clifton, Santa Barbara CountyBorn out of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, Brewer-Clifton was formed in the early 1990s by Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton. As the
former notes; “It is our primary goal and priority to deliver the essence of the vineyard as clearly and honestly as possible.” They do this by sourcing
parcels, which they vinify and bottle separately, from growers in all four corners of the region. Their range is extensive (including a Pinot from grapes
grown by the Melville family – see below) but like an artist’s palette each expresses the different shades and hues of the clone and terroir they are
derived from. Their name is held in reverence in the US and we and excited to import their wines in the UK. The 2007 releases are expected late 2009.

O Melville Family Vineyards, Santa Barbara CountyLocated in the centre of the Santa Rita Hills appellation, in Santa Barbara County, the Melville’s estate currently consists of 85 acres of vineyards. They
are purely growers and have a relationship with Greg Brewer (see above) who vinifies each of their plots for them. The climate here is significantly
impacted by the proximity to the ocean, and marked by consistent morning and evening fog and steady afternoon winds. These are pure and impressive
wines and though not identikit Burgundies they do share the same terroir-iste philosophy of wines with a direct connection to a plot and parcel in a
defined vineyard. The 2007 releases are expected late autumn 2009.
