A potpourri of topics will be presented by renowned specialists from a variety of disciplines. Attendance offers participants an opportunity to update their knowledge regarding predisposition syndromes that result in malignant and non-malignant disorders. A section focusing on counseling will address specific issues that providers often lack the knowledge to discuss with their patients. In particular, information regarding genetic counseling for families when a child has an unexpected diagnosis will be presented. Additionally, the “when” and “why” of cord-blood banking will be discussed. Participation in this educational offering will result in improved identification, diagnosis, decision-making, communication, counseling and treatment when patients present with disorders that may have a genetic component. Networking breaks will provide attendees opportunities to interact with faculty and forge collegial relationships to improve their patients’ experiences. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1. Understand the principles of genetics and predisposition to diseases in certain childhood disorders. 2. Identify childhood disorders that may have a genetic component. 3. Follow screening recommendations and recognize indications for specialty referrals when genetic factors are identified. 4. Become familiar with the unique counseling needs of families of children with inherited hematologic oncologic and other disorders. 5. Understand how cord-blood banking relates to heritable disorders in childhood. Course Description
