Reading is Everything

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

Once you learn to read, you will be forever free. —Frederick DouglassOne of the greatest gifts adults can give—to their offspring and to their society—is to read to children. —Carl SaganChildren are made readers on the laps of their parents. —Emilie BuchwaldTo learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark. —Victor HugoWe read to know we are not alone.—C.S. LewisSo it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky. —William James

What is Geneva 2020?

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

An umbrella for all programs and organizations that support our youth. An initiative that finds solutions to the problems facing Geneva’s youth.A uniting force for all of Geneva behind our schools and our kids.

What we are NOT?A program. A fundraising initiative. A great idea that will fizzle out. One person’s vision. Competition. Judgment.

McGowan Charitable Fund, which, along with matching funds from HWS, allows for the hiring of the Geneva 2020 Program Coordinator. In April, there is a community-wide convening for Geneva 2020.2016—Geneva 2020 became an official StriveTogether member.

The next phase of the collective impact work will be creating collaborative action networks. These networks will focus on outcomes and indicators and will be made up of a diverse group of Geneva representatives with an interest and experience in each area. These networks will eventually include all of these areas:o Kindergarten Readinesso Literacyo STEaMo Graduation Rateso College Readinesso Career Readinesso Attendance

Our strengths

We will build a stronger Geneva by harnessing the resources of the entire community in support of our children so that they may graduateprepared for lives of consequence.

o We have strong community programming in literacy already.

o Other communities work for years to create a book give-away program, and we already have Geneva Reads.

o We have a school district that is on-board and focusing on literacy, but it needs more community support.

o You all are here!
