Researching GenrePrint
Definition of Genre
Genre is a type of magazine that has its own characteristic features which are known and
recognized by the audience.
Chosen Genre
The genre I have chosen is indie, I have chosen this because I thought it would be the genre that is more realistic in how I could actually make the magazine and what kind of access I would have
to certain types of props.
Key Components Key components of indie magazines are certain types of:
Colours- such as red, white and black; they tend to be darker colours rather than bright pinks and purples.
Fonts- these tend to be quite simple yet bold and easy to read.
Content- this is obviously about what is in the magazine, such as certain bands and different types of articles e.g. upcoming gigs.
Costume- this is what type of clothing the model is wearing, and it is usually something that will fit in with the rest of the genre and colours.
Camera shots- these are usually mid- shots, so you can clearly see the model on the page.
Examples of Text-Colours
Common colours used in indie magazines are red, white and black. This could be to try and make the magazine look slightly different and those colours can link to the type of music.
Examples of Text-Fonts
Fonts used in indie magazines are usually clear, simple, bold fonts. This is so they’re easy to read and stand out from everything else. It also links to the type of music.
Examples of Text-Costume
Costume is just the clothing and make-up the models wear on the magazine, the type of clothing they wear and what their make-up is like usually links to the genre of music e.g. indie. The models
could wear quite edgy clothing or look a bit different to what you would typically expect.
SummaryIn my magazine firstly the type of camera shot I would use would be a mid-
shot because it fits the conventions of a lot of other magazines. The colours I would use could be colours such as red, black, white and maybe darker
purples or blues; I would use these certain colours because they are darker and have certain connotations, also so the magazine isn’t too dark but so it would still have some colour to it, again it fits the conventions of other indie
magazines. The type of clothing and make-up I would use on my model would be similar to magazines that exist, possibly bold make-up and outfits that
could be seen as slightly different. The fonts would be bold, clear and simple, again like existing magazines because I want mine to fit the conventions. The
content in my magazine could be things such as interviews with a music artist, reviews of gigs, articles on new albums and music etc.
