PROJECT SUMMARYWireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are increasingly in demand for a growing number of application domains. Due to the limited battery capacity of wireless connected embedded systems, power saving has become a top priority to extend lifetime, reduce heat dissipation and limit form factor. GEODES rises to this challenge with innovative techniques covering all system levels.

OBJECTIVES n Design of low-power deployable mobile devices n Node-level and Network-level power optimisations techniques association:

> System Level modelling (SystemC), Power-Aware protocols (MAC, routing, PHY), Middleware (QoS), Power-Aware operating system

n Best compromised are searched, found and dynamically applied while maintaining functionality of the sensors and the whole network

UNIQUE SELLING POINTS / BUSINESS VALUE n Energy efficient systems n Smart decisions making systems (Communicating objects) n A wide range of business areas: Surveillance,

Automotive, Multimedia, Health

RESULTS n Orders-of-magnitude energy savings and lifetime extensions verified against multiple

prototype demonstrators across diverse application domains: - Up to 98% autonomy extension for surveillance applications - 100% network lifetime extension depending on WSN size, structure, latency - Up to 11% of Total Energy Consumption (TEC) reduction for Set Top Box > For 100000 products: 620MW/h saved per year

n Two public power saving handbooks written by the project are promoted at: http://geodes.ict.tuwien.ac.at/PowerSavingHandbook/
