BeachesWaves:•Can wear away land and expose rocky shore•Can deposit new sand

Currents:•Move sand from one location to another

Tides:•Bring in sand, shells, and ocean sediments

What are beaches?

Effects of tides on Shore Line

These logs were washed ashore by tides after a storm.

What are some things that you have seen on the beach before that are an effect of tides on our shore

line?

Barrier Islands

Waves:

•Deposit sand on beaches and change the shape of barrier islands

Currents:

•Move sand from one end of the island to the other

Barrier Island before and after a hurricane.

What are barrier islands?

EstuariesAll rivers flow

into the ocean. The area where a river meets

the ocean is an estuary.

Waves:•Deposit sand in the estuaries

•At high tide, ocean water brings in sediments and sea life that feed and nourish life in the estuary.

What are estuaries?

InletsTides:•As tides change the amount of water will change

Currents and Storms:•Change the shape of an inlet opening

Inlet opening before and after a hurricane.

Important Points• Currents along the shoreline can move sand from

one location to another. These are known as longshore currents.

• Barrier Islands are naturally occurring and function to protect the mainland from the effects of waves on its shore.

• Estuaries have a mixture of freshwater and saltwater.

• Inlets are the water filled spaces between the barrier islands.
