GEORGE BUSH WINS THE ELECTION OF 1988
GORBACHEV INSTITUTES REFORMS IN USSR Glasnost- means openness- began to allow
people to criticize problems in the USSR Allowed more books to be published Released political prisoners
People began to complain about economic conditions
Perestroika- economic reforms- allowed more local control of factories and some private businesses
DEMOCRATIZATION
Beginning in 1987, Gorbachev began to open up the election process
Gorbachev states he will not intervene in East Europe
COMMUNISM END IN EASTERN EUROPE The movement begins in Poland with a
group called Solidarity When the USSR does not intervene, the
movement spreads to Hungary, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Romania
FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL
NATIONALISM AS A FORCE FOR CHANGE IN THE USSR The USSR had over 100 different
nationalities Under glasnost, national groups began to
demand self-government and religious freedoms
March 1990- Lithuania declares independence Gorbachev orders an economic blockade 1991- civilians attacked by Soviet forces
YELTSIN DENOUNCES GORBACHEV
Elected Russian president in 1991
Gorbachev still in power (President of the USSR)
THE AUGUST COUP- PLAN TO TAKE OUT GORBACHEV BY THE COMMUNIST HARDLINERS WHO DID NOT LIKE CHANGES IN THE USSRAUGUST 18-21
The coup fails because Yeltsin and the army side with Gorbachev.
USSR BREAKS UP
By early December all 15 republics had declared independence from the USSR
Form Commonwealth of Independent states (Baltics and Georgia refused to join)
Dec. 25, 1991- Gorbachev resigned as president of the USSR
1989- TIANANMEN SQUARE MASSACRE May 1989- Students in China began
demonstrating for more rights June 4, 1989- Chinese government
brought in tanks and 300,000 soldiers who fired on the protesters
PANAMA- 1989
United States invades Panama to remove Manuel Noriega and bring him to trial in the United States
1990- SADDAM HUSSEIN INVADED KUWAIT UN issues sanctions against Iraq When that doesn’t work, begin
Operation Desert Storm- Jan 16, 1991 Quick and successful- Iraq was pushed
out of Kuwait

Bush tries cutting capital gains taxes to stimulate the economy Capital gains tax would be a tax on the sale
of stocks or real estate for profit During the election of 1988- Bush stated,
“read my lips, no new taxes”\ He signs a tax increase into law in return for
cuts in spending
ELECTION OF 1992
Republican candidate- George Bush Democratic candidate- Bill Clinton (blames
Bush for the recession) 3rd party candidate- Ross Perot
