THIS IS AN ORIGINAL GEORGE KEYS DONKEY JACKET.
In 1890 George Key - a small bespoke maker of clothing - designs and makes the worlds first corporate clothing item - the donkey jacket - for
workers on the Manchester ship canal construction project.
The key feature is a saddle shoulder- the first clothing to feature this protective device.
Over time, the donkey jacket evolves from being just a sewn on saddle shoulder into a complete weatherproof jacket, made from boiled wool - serge - in the body and tallow covered denim cotton on the shoulder.
Designed for function, the shoulder seam is often turned inside out to give a smooth non rub surface to the wearer - something often missed on
inferior non industrial copies.
Two simple external pockets, button-through or toggle fastening and classic standing collar or hood for extra warmth complete the classic
look that remains as contemporary and relevant today as it was back then.
In 1900 orders are received from the Admiralty to make duffel coats for the Royal Navy. George Key adds his saddle shoulder to the Royal Navy duffle and changes the shape to reflect a long donkey jacket with patch
pockets, introducing a new key line to the range.
The re-launch of the George Keys label sees an important Heritage Brand available to discerning customers for the first time in over a quarter of
a century.
Often copied, but we believe, never bettered, the new George Keys stays true to its roots with the Donkey Jacket at its core and a range of key
products that reflect the ethics of quality functional workwear re-engineered for todays demands.
