Patriots in the Pros Throughout George Mason women’s basketball history, many athletes have left Mason only to continue their playing career professionally, whether it is with the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) or overseas in international play. Jen Derevjanik is one of the most recent players to extend her basketball career as she just ended her fourth season in the WNBA and her second with the Phoenix Mercury. Keri Chaconas was the other Patriot who played in the WNBA as she was a member of the Washington Mystics squad during the 1998 season under former Mason head coach, Jim Lewis. Whether or not you are drafted, the players go through a long process before their team’s final roster is revealed. About a month after her career had ended with Patriot basketball in 2004, Derevjanik was invited to participate at the WNBA free agent camp at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. The Staten Is-land native was then chosen as one of the top three, out of 39, to be invited to participate in the Sun’s training camp. Originally there were 18 players on the roster, but after two cut-dates, the Sun had a complete final roster with 11 players and two injured reserves. Derevjanik’s first year with the Sun was in 2004 and she went from her collegiate team participating in the conference championship game to her professional team playing in the WNBA Finals in the same year. After her first season ended, Derevjanik played overseas with the Lithuanian National Team, which advanced to its first-ever Euro-League Final Four. When Derevjanik came back to the states, she once again made the Sun’s roster to make history as the first Patriot

to play more than one season with the WNBA. In 2006, Derevjanik was released from the Sun, but was picked up by the Mercury where she played in 31 games and started eight of those contests. Derevjanik, in her second season in Phoenix, helped lead the Mercury to the WNBA Finals and ultimately, the league championship. “We are thrilled for Jen Dev (Derevjanik) for this great opportunity to continue her career in the WNBA,” said former Mason head coach Debbie Taneyhill. “Now playing with the Phoenix Mercury it shows that Jen is very deserving of playing at this elite level and it is very exciting that she will be able to represent Mason, as well as the Colonial Athletic Asso-ciation in the WNBA.” In Derevjanik’s two years with Connecticut, the Sun advanced to the WNBA Finals both seasons, but the Sun fell short both times. Derevjanik saw action in all eight playoff games in 2005 and became the first Patriot in school history to start in a WNBA Finals contest. Derevjanik closed out the playoff run third among teammates with 14 assists and fourth in steals with five through the eight games. Derevjanik started a school record 116 consecutive games for Mason and is among the top-10 all-time in Mason’s history books in four categories, including fourth in steals (227), sixth in 3-point field goals (132), as well as third in both assists (470) and points (1,637). Derevjanik was also named to the 2004 Academic All-America Women’s Basket-ball District III University Division First Team

and went on to earn conference All-Academic accolades for her efforts in the classroom. Derevjanik earned CAA Rookie of the Year honors (2001), was a two-time All-CAA Second Team award winner and garnered All-CAA First Team honors her senior season. In addition, Derevjanik was named to the 2005 CAA All-Tournament Team. In 2016, two former Patriots landed spots on professional teams. Forward Kristi Mokube (2014-16) signed a deal with the Saarlouis Royals in Germany. Guard Taylor Brown (2014-16) signed a one-year contract with Snaefell in Iceland.

Patriot Center History

The Patriot Center, one of the finest on-campus arenas in the East, is home to the George Mason women’s basketball team. Since 1985, the Patriots have compiled a record of 191-151 at the Patriot Center for a .558 winning percentage. Since Nyla Milleson took over as head coach in the 2013-14 season, the Patriots have posted a 19-18 home record, including a 7-5 home record in the 2015-16 season. In the 2008-09 season, Mason won three games at home, two in Colonial Athletic Association play including the Feb. 22 victory over Old Dominion. The Patriots’ 63-57 victory before a crowd of 1,214 was the first time in program history that Mason had defeated the Lady Monarchs, ending a stretch of 44 straight losses. Two weeks earlier, Mason topped Georgia State, 63-59 in front of 3,073 fans, the second-highest total in Patriot history. For two straight seasons (2004-06), Mason hosted the CAA Women’s Basketball Championship at the Patriot Center. In 2005, five of the nine games were decided by five points or less for the first time in league history. Second-seeded Old Dominion earned a 78-74 victory over top-seeded Delaware in the only overtime game ever played in the CAA title contest. In 2006, Old Dominion edged out James Madison, 58-54, for its 15th-straight CAA Champion-ship title. During the 2004-05 campaign, Mason collect-ed an overall record of 7-6 when playing on its home court, which included a Colonial Athletic Association mark of 5-4. The Patriots opened up the year with a loss in Fairfax to Tulane (Nov. 21), but rebounded with a 60-35 win over BIG EAST member school, Miami, on Nov. 30. The Patriots held the Hurricanes to just eight points in the first half, which was tied for second in the NCAA Division I record books for fewest points scored by one team in a single half. In 2003-04, the Patriots dropped their home opener to Georgetown on Nov. 26, but went on to defeat their opponent in the next three contests

This season Mason will host 16 teams on its own court, the most in 11 seasons. In addition to non-conference games against Norfolk State, Jack-sonville, N.C. Central, Fairfield, High Point, Howard and George Washington, Patriot Center will also host CAA competitors Delaware, Northeastern, William & Mary, Georgia State, Hofstra, Old Dominion, VCU, UNC Wilmington and James Madison. The Patriot Center offers fans excellent sight lines and has 9,523 permanent theater-style seats, yet retains an intimate home court atmosphere. The facility has attracted basketball fans from the entire Washington metropolitan area since it opened on Oct. 4, 1985. The inaugural event was a NBA exhibition game between the New York Knicks and the Washington Bullets, with the sellout contest marking the professional debut of Patrick Ewing. Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs also made his first professional appearance in an exhibition contest at the Patriot Center in 1997. The Patriot Center houses the men’s and women’s basketball offices and the offices of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which manages the facility. Recently, the arena underwent significant renovations, including upgrades to the concourse, ticket office, as well as basketball offices and locker rooms. While basketball remains the primary tenant, the multi-purpose facility also hosts a wide array of family programming, concerts, sports and entertain-ment events. An October 8, 1994, Phish concert set the overall attendance record of 10,356. Other headline acts which have performed in the Patriot Center include Jimmy Buffett, David Copperfield, Prince, Alan Jackson, Neil Diamond and Barenaked Ladies, among others. Family entertainment acts such as Sesame Street Live and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus return annually.

on their home turf. One game that highlighted the 2003-04 campaign at the PC was a 92-64 win over Hofstra on Feb. 1 in front of a Patriot Center season-high 2,275 fans where Mason set the school record in three-point field goals made with 15. During the 2003-04 campaign, the Patriots posted an overall record of 8-3 at the Patriot Center which included a 7-2 CAA mark. In 2002-03, Mason opened up its home sched-ule with an 89-52 win over Howard on Dec. 4. The Patriots then went on to win its first two conference games on their home turf against James Madison, 82-57, and William & Mary, 64-48. Old Dominion was the next conference foe to step on Mason’s home court, but the Lady Monarchs would squeak by with a 73-69 win. During the 2001-02 campaign, Mason opened its home schedule with back-to-back come-from-behind victories, defeating Hartford, 79-68, and topping UT-Chattanooga, 91-84. The win over UTC on Nov. 24 featured a historic Patriot Center and CAA freshman-record 41-point performance from stand-out guard and then-freshman Laura Kooij, as Mason tied a school record with 10 three-point baskets in the victory. Several hundred spectators witnessed the Patriots host their first-ever postseason tournament contest in 2001—a 66-56 loss to Georgetown (Mar. 14)—after totaling 11 home victories, the most home wins ever in season. During the 1999-2000 campaign, the Patriots had almost 9,000 fans (over 600 per game) see Mason win seven contests at home. On Jan. 23, 2000, a record-breaking 3,152 fans were on hand as the Patriots fell to CAA foe East Caro-lina, 91-79. This number broke the attendance record of 2,811 that was set in the 1997-98 season when JMU slipped by Mason, 68-67 (Jan. 18). On Jan. 3, 1999, Trish Halpin became the all-time blocked shots leader in George Mason history as she swatted block number 137 against Old Dominion in the Patriot Center.
