Projects must meet specific legal requirements to be eligible for funding by the CPA. Your suggestions for CPA projects are welcome. Input from the citizens for Georgetown will not only help to create new projects but also help to determine which projects are needed and wanted. Name: Jeff Lamoureaux on Behalf of the Georgetown Historical Commission Address:42 West Main Street, Georgetown Phone: 978 352-4866 Suggestion: The purpose of this GCPC Project Suggestion it to request a Historical Preservation type CPA grant for the purpose of completing the rehabilitation the Civil War Monument Area located in front of the Town Hall. The planning for and some of the initial re-landscaping to be done as part of this project was authorized under the existing multi-project CPA grant (cp_app_075) that was issued jointly to the Georgetown Historical Commission (GHC) and the Georgetown Highway Dept (GHD). The intent of this project is to make the Monument and the “green” on which it sits more like it was when it was erected and dedicated in 1874 (see Figure 2 on Attachment 1) and to make it stand out as the focal point of the green by making it more viewable from all directions (See Figure 1).This will bring the monument site into compliance with the Dept Of Interior’s guidelines for such memorials erected in the honor of previous generations. That is the purpose of this grant is to:: 1. Provide an iron fence with an open access area around the monument and make it more accessible for viewing up close by leveling and re-landscaping the area where it sits as shown in the artists rendition shown Figure 3 of Attachment 1, and 2. Re-landscape the small “green” such that the monument becomes the focal point when viewed from any direction by removing the large evergreen and other trees and shrubs which obscure the all-around view of this Monument especially from the center of Town looking towards Town Hall. 3. Re-grade, re-sod and plant low profile plants and/or bushes that compliment the park without obscuring the view of the monument or seriously interfere with the assembly of participants and spectators that gather there during commemorative celebrations (Planning yet to be done) Recent estimates indicate that $35,000 will be needed to rehabilitate this site as indicated. So a joint GHC/GHD grant in that amount is hereby requested to enable completion of this rehabilitation project.
