STUDENT HANDBOOK 2008-2009

TO THE GMS PARENTS: We feel that well-informed parents promote a better school environment. Consistent with this belief, we are encouraging your child to bring this handbook home so that you may become acquainted with the various phases of school life. You will note that we have included academic, extracurricular and student services information, attendance regulations, the code of student conduct, dress code, as well as other general information that will aid a student in becoming a better member of our school. It is our belief that parental involvement makes for a successful student, thus we welcome you at all times to come and be a part of your child's education. We also welcome any volunteer services that you may offer that will make Georgetown Middle School a "blue ribbon" school. Volunteers are encouraged to be trained through our Volunteer Program. For more information contact our Youth Service Coordinator.

TO THE GMS STUDENT: This handbook has been developed for the purpose of informing you of policies, procedures, and organization of your school. We hope that is will assist you in making your school days pleasant and more profitable. It is each student's responsibility to read, understand, and abide by this book.

SBDM COUNCIL:

IMPORTANT INFORMA TIONTION

ABSENCES: When a student is absent, parents are requested to call the office in the morning. You may reach the attendance clerk at 863-3805 Ext. 2873 until 12:30 p.m. Upon returning to school, the student should bring in a written excuse or a doctor's

excuse to their homeroom teacher. You will find the attendance policy on pages 19 and 20.

ACCESS TO THE RECORDS: Records are released to parents and students at their request. Outside agencies wishing records must have a signed statement from the parent or guardian stating that a release for disclosure of records to the student. These records can be obtained through our registrar’s office.

ACCIDENTS: If an accident occurs, the school staff member on duty must fill out an accident report. Someone trained in first aid will give minor medical attention. Parents are notified of any emergencies requiring immediate attention. All students are to have an emergency form in the office. Parents should fill these forms out, NOT the student, with the parent’s signature.

ASSEMBLIES: Assemblies are held to enrich the curriculum. All assemblies are approved in advance by the principal.

AGENDA BOOKS: An agenda book is a requirement for each student. If a student should happen to loose theirs, they will need to purchase another at a cost of $5.00. It is imperative that the student keep his/her assignments in this book so that all homework and projects will be turned in on time.

BANQUETSBANQUETS: Individual Team Sport 3

Page 4: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

and an Academic Banquet will be held each year. Those who have participated in an athletic activity will be invited to attend these individual dinners. If a student has maintained a high academic average (92+ average for the year), or served in Math Counts, BETA Club, or on the Academic Teams then they will be invited to participate in the academic dinner.

CAFETERIA: Our cafeteria offers breakfast and lunch to all students. Lunch prices are as follows: Student- $2.00; Students Reduced- $.40; Board Employees-$2.75; Visiting Adults- $3.50. Breakfast prices are as follows: Students- $1.25; Students Reduced- $.30; Board Employees-$1.50; Visiting Adults -$2.25. Extra milk or juice price is $.45 each. ADVANCE PAYMENT IS RECOMMENDED. This is helpful to the parent by reducing the amount of time a student could forget his/her money. The cafeteria staff accepts payment for a week, a month, or whatever time span you desire. Checks are welcomed. Students whose families financially qualify may receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch after their application is approved. The cafeteria’s policy is “no charges”. If your child should forget his/her lunch, they may inquire about the alternative lunch (peanut butter & jelly sandwich with milk) with the cafeteria’s manager. Free lunches and breakfasts are also available in the summer for those children under the age of 18 years.

CAR RIDES: If you are being dropped off to school in any vehicle other than a school bus, you must enter the side door. Cars are not permitted in the bus area directly behind the building. Do not allow your

child to leave the vehicle until you have reached the side of the building. Morning traffic is too dangerous to allow students to enter the front of the building.

CHECK-IN POLICY: A student who arrives late before 8:15 a.m. will go directly to their homeroom, with his/her note. A student who arrives late (after 8:15 a.m.) to school must check in with the attendance clerk (second window) in the front office, and then go directly to his or her locker and then to class. A student must have an admit slip to assure attendance accuracy.CHECK-OUT POLICY: If it becomes necessary for a student to be checked out of school during the school day, we request the following procedure be used: 1) On the day the student is be checked out, send a note with the student's full name, the date, time and reason for leaving. 2) The student will give the note to their homeroom teacher. 3) Only the parent or guardian can check a child out of school and upon entering school must show proper ID before a child can be released. This is mandatory for the protection of your child. The office staff will make a copy of the ID to keep for their records. After the initial time this is done, this won't need to be done again. 4) Upon returning to school, the parent should sign the student back in and produce a doctor's, dentists, and etc. excuse to the attendance clerk (2nd window in front office. 5) If a student is checked out of the same class more than six (6) times a doctor's note is required.

REGULAR DETENTIONS & REGULAR DETENTIONS & FRIDAY DETENTIONFRIDAY DETENTION: Monday detentions will be assigned by an Encore teacher. Tuesday detentions will be assigned per grade levels.

Monday and Tuesday detentions begin at 3:05 p.m. and end at 4:05 p.m. Friday Detention will start at 3:05 p.m. and end at 6:05 p.m. Students must have work to do while in these detentions. If the student is dismissed from a regular detention or a Friday Detention because of poor behavior, they will be assigned CAB time.

EMAIL: If you would like to receive our staff’s Buffalo Bulletin, you can be included on the school’s e-mail list. This is helpful for the parents to keep up with the activities going on in our school. There is a sign-up list during our Open House or you may send your name and e-mail address to: [email protected](If you were on last year’s list, please sign-up “new” for each year. EARTHQUAKE DRILLSEARTHQUAKE DRILLS: Fire drills, tornado drills, and earthquake drills occur during the year. During fire drills, it is the responsibility of the student to leave the building quickly and quietly. Each teacher will explain the correct procedure for exiting the classroom and the building. During tornado drills and earthquake drills, students should evacuate their rooms to the designated assigned areas. Maps are posted in every classroom displaying the route to be taken.

GRADES ONLINE: You may check on your student’s grade through STI website: www.iiod.ssts.comYou will need your child’s pin number and social security number to access this program. The pin number will be sent home with your student shortly after school starts.

GRADING PROCEDURES The grade card contains a percentage grade and a corresponding letter grade for each subject. The standard grading scale adopted by the Scott County Board of Education is as follows:A = 100-92 B = 91-84C = 83-76 D = 75-68F = 67 & Below

GRADE REPORTS: Students receive their report cards

every 9 weeks. Students receive their mid-term reports every 4½ weeks. With receiving the mid-term report every 4½ weeks, this will give the student time to get his/her grade higher in time for the actual report card. The final report card for the year will be given on the last day of school at the end of the school day. If your child should be absent on the last day, it will then be mailed to your home.

GUIDANCE SERVICES: Developmental guidance is the responsibility of all educators. Our guidance counselor provides guidance in the areas of self-esteem, decision-making, relationships, sexual harassment and career development. A student's visit and conversations are always kept confidential. Any student may sign up with the counselor or the registrar for a meeting time with the counselor. Students’ records are kept in the registrar’s office. The registrar office handles all open enrollments, physicals, immunization records, registrations and withdrawals. Should your child, due to medical reasons, need homebound assistance you may contact our registrar’s office for more information. Parents may reach the guidance office at 863-3805 (registrar ext. 2890 and the counselor ext. 2889).

HALL PASSES: Students are not to be in the halls or in the office without a hall pass, which will be distributed by the classroom

6

Page 7: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

teacher. They will be sent back to class if without one. Students will be required to sign-in and out of each classroom as needed. Different hall passes will be given by teachers. They will be color coded with the teachers’ name on them and the specific place each student is going. Green: Office Yellow: Restroom Red: Teacher to Teacher White: Library Blue: Water Fountain

HOMEWORK: Homework is important in helping the individual student achieve a sense of responsibility for his own achievement. It reinforces and enhances the classroom learning experience. Students should be encouraged to seek help from their parents with their homework. By checking homework regularly, parents help the student develop proper work habits and improve grades. Parent involvement helps in developing student pride in neatness, pride in correctness, and pride in creativity. It is the student's responsibility to obtain their homework due to an absence. We would like to encourage our students to use our homework hotlines to retrieve homework. On a daily basis the hotlines are updated. Depending on your child’s grade level (6th, 7th, or 8th), call the school’s main number after school hours (3:30 PM) and the extension of that grade’s team leader. A student should be absent more than two days before requesting the office to circulate a homework assignment sheet. Upon the third day of excused absence, the parent should notify the office of this request before 11:00 a.m. Then the collected homework will be available in the office by 3:00 p.m. Please make sure to have your child’s combination to their locker so you can retrieve their books (if needed for the work). However, if a student is suspended they are NOT entitled to make up that homework or receive credit for it.

LOCKERS: Only school provided locks will be used. Students should never give their combinations to anyone else nor should they set the lock on the final number or they risk the chance of someone getting into their locker and taking things that don't belong to them. If the student's lock is missing they are responsible to obtain another lock from the front office. There will be a $5.00 fee to replace the missing lock. If a student should damage the locker they will be responsible to pay for the repair of these damages. They will be expected to clean their lockers if they should put chewing gum, stickers, etc in them. When they are issued a locker, at the beginning of the year, it will have been already cleaned out of these substances. Students are asked not to put left over food in their lockers for sanitary reasons. If a student keeps their locker organized it helps the student not waste time between classes.

7

Page 8: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

LOST AND FOUND: Personal items should be marked. Found items will be placed in the Lost and Found Box located close to the cafeteria. When the Lost & Found Box is full, the office will make an announcement to encourage students to look for lost or missing items. The announcement will be announced for at least three days. [This time frame will allow if a child was absent and did not hear the announcement.] All unclaimed items will be taken and donated to a charitable organization. The Lost and Found Box will be emptied on a regular basis. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with their personal items. If an item is lost, they need to inquire at the custodial office, check with their teachers and/or check the box. If the item is still not found, they can write up a description of the item and turn it in to the front office to be read over the intercom announcements.

If an item is found such as: eyeglasses, jewelry, textbooks, they will be turned in to the front office and included on the intercom announcements and the Buffalo Bulletin.

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS: PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION CAN ONLY BE GIVEN WITH WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM THE PHYSICIAN with explicit directions and the physician's signature. This form will be sent home only upon request. Medication must be brought by the parent to the front office with the dosage and time the medication is to be administered. The pharmacy can give extra prescription bottles to keep one at school and one for home. All medication will be kept in a locked cabinet. It is the student's responsibility to remember to come to the front office to take their medicine. He/She will be asked to sign the medication log at the time the medicine is distributed to him/her. WE DO NOT HAVE A SCHOOL NURSE. A member of our office staff will administer the medication. Parents are encouraged to administer medication at home whenever possible. It is State Law that no medication can be administered without proper consent (including inhalers). Inhalers are the only medication permitted to be kept on the student after the proper forms are in the office

.

OVER-THE-COUNTER

8

Page 9: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

MEDICATIONS: We try to discourage over-the-counter medications, due to the volume of students.Over-the-counter medications can ONLY be given with written permission from the parent/guardian and explicit directions from the parent. Parent must bring medication to the front office. Only the recommended dosage mentioned on the container can be administered. Medicine will not be accepted in foil or in a baggie. The medicine should be brought in an unopened container with the child's name clearly marked on it. This would include Tylenol, cough drops, cough syrup, ointments, creams, etc. The school cannot supply these medications. At the end of the year if the student should have any medication left in their container, it will be sent home with the child. Again, we do not have a school nurse so the medication will be administered by a member of our office staff. The student must sign the temporary medication log at the time the over-the-counter medication is distributed to him/her. Sometime students try to abuse the privilege of having Tylenol. If a student should ask for Tylenol more than three (3) consecutive days, the parent will be contacted and recommend the student to see a doctor. Again a consent form will be sent home only upon request. It is hard to keep and give medicine to hundreds of students and the offices do their clerical job efficiently.

PARENT CONFERENCES: Parents can make appointments for conferences with teachers, counselors, or principals by telephoning 863-3805. The principal, counselor, and teachers have voice mail to set up their own appointments. It is important to contact the school if your child is experiencing any difficulty whatsoever.

PROMOTION AND RETENTION: Students who meet any one of the following conditions will be considered for retention at

his/her current grade level: 1) fail two out of the four academic core classes 2) fail 50% of combined encore classes 3) fail a combination for the academic core classes and the encore classes (example: one academic class and two encore classes--25% of each class).

SCHOOL SPIRIT: GO BUFFALOES! We believe that every student should have a feeling of "School Pride" and support all school functions, keep the building clean, and take pride in themselves and their school by respecting each other, teachers, administrators, and all classified staff.

SCHOOL BOOKSTORE: There are vending machines available in the front hallway, across from the front office windows. The students can purchase notepads, pencils, pens and eraser sticks. As a convenience, before our annual Science Fair, students will be able to obtain tri-fold boards through the front office.

SNOW DAYS: Students are encouraged to listen to the local radio and TV channels for school closings and delays.

STUDENT FEESSTUDENT FEES:: Student fee is $20.00. This fee includes their agenda book, usage of books, their

9

Page 10: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

lock and locker, etc. Replacement costs of our locks and agenda book are $5.00 each. Each child is responsible for their student fee to be turned in to their homeroom teacher the first week of school. Checks are welcomed: payable to GMS. This rate will be pro-rated by nine weeks if a child should enroll later into the school year. The scale will be as follows: 1st nine weeks: $20.00; 2nd nine weeks: $17.50; 3rd nine weeks: $15.00 and 4th nine weeks: $12.50. In this case, the parent will need to pay the fee to the front office’s bookkeeper. At that time, the student will receive an agenda book and lock for their locker from the secretary. If you have applied for a waiver of student fees, please wait until you get your letter of confirmation from our Central Office before paying the student fees.

STUDENT ILLNESS: Should your students become ill and feel the need to call to go home, they may do so from the classroom. A teacher or staff member cannot make the determination if a child is ill. They can only see if the student appears ill from their actions in class. We do not have a school nurse or a designated area to isolate a sick child. The student will be called to the front office when someone comes to pick them up.

STUDENT INFORMATION: The front office should be informed if student information has been changed. In case of emergency, the office will need to contact you. The office will need this information for mailings going home to the parents.

STUDY SKILLS: A student who learns will: 1) Bring textbook, notebook, paper, pen, and pencil and other necessary materials to class. 2) Be an active participant in the classroom, listen well, and take part in discussions. 3) Ask questions if he/she doesn't understand the discussion or if he/she has a problem. 4) Plans work and schedule time for homework every day, make sure assignments are understood before he/she leaves class. 5) Strive to do his/her best not just to "get by."

TARDINESS: If a student comes in late or leaves early from school this is counted as a tardy (depending on the amount of time absent). It is better for a student to be tardy to school than to be counted absent the whole day. Students should always be in class and ready to work with all materials. If a student is (unexcused) tardy to school or tardy to class, he or she will be given a written warning the first time, and anything there after will result in Friday Detention. If a student is tardy to a class due to a teacher detaining them, they will need to obtain an admit slip from that teacher. The front office will not issue an admit slip unless they were detained in the office. The student must have an admit slip to enter late into any class.

10

Page 11: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

TEAMING: The middle school is organized into interdisciplinary teams to help personalize education and to provide a sense of community and belonging. Each team is composed of a large group of students, a Science, English, Math and Social Studies teacher, plus staff from Encore. The teacher team has a common planning period to work on curriculum, and to discuss particular student learning issues. We believe our Team Program has several advantages to students, parents, and teachers. Included in these advantages are the following: 1) Economy of time for both staff and parents, as parents may meet with entire team rather than the individual teachers. 2) Individual attention for students. 3) Lack of overloads in test and homework. 4) Early identification of problems. 5) Consistency in handling problems. 6) Creation of interdisciplinary units. 7) Creating a smaller community within the larger school.

TELEPHONE: Students will be called from class for emergency telephone messages from parent/guardian only. Only for emergency calls, students may use the classroom phones. Students will be able to call from the classroom should they become ill. (The teacher would be able to see if the student appears ill, since we do not have a school nurse.) Non-emergency calls are as such: forgetting homework, going home with a friend, transportation needs, etc. Students should make arrangements before school concerning transportation needs. DUE TO THE HIGH VOLUME OF NON-EMERGENCY CALLS, PLEASE DON’T ASK YOUR CHILD TO CALL YOU. They have only four (4) minutes between classes and don’t have extra time to place calls unless an emergency. If you notice on your caller-id that a call was made to you from Scott Co. Schools, Youth Services, etc., please don’t be concerned. If it was an emergency, the office staff will keep trying to reach you or leave a message informing you of the urgency to return the call. If it is not an emergency, whoever placed the call will call again. All calls go through our main switchboard therefore, it is impossible for the office to trace where the call originated from or who placed the call. We cannot interrupt classes for such phone calls. We must keep our phone lines available for emergency calls. All telephone messages or personal items, for after school activities, will be given to your student at the end of the school day. Again, please try to make these arrangements before your child leaves home in the morning or the night before. This will help keep our phone lines available.

TEXTBOOKS: Students are expected to take proper care of all books. Students must pay for lost or destroyed books. It is the student's responsibility to return the book issued to him/her (even if a friend borrows it). These can be expensive, so make sure

11

Page 12: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

that you take care of them.

TIME STARTING & ENDING: School will start at 8:05 a.m. and end at 3:05 p.m. The doors to the building will be opened at 7:50 a.m. School office hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Early Release Days dismissal time is at 12:55 PM.

VISITORS: Students are not allowed visitors at school. This applies to school age children and preschool. Visitors making presentations and parents are always welcome. They should report to the front office and receive a visitor's pass before going to the classrooms or elsewhere in the building. No one is permitted outside the office area without a visitor's pass. You will be stopped if not seen with a visitor pass. We all have safety obligations for our students

.

SPECIFIC RULES EXPLAINED

ASSEMBLIES: Assemblies are a privilege. Rules are the same as that of the classroom with special emphasis on courtesy to the performers. Whistling, booing, rude expressions are not acceptable. If a student has CAB, he/she will not be allowed to attend assemblies.

BOOK BAGS & JACKETS: These items are not allowed in classrooms and/or hallways. When brought to school the student will be required to keep said item/s (at their own risk) in their lockers. This policy is designed to cut down on the concealment of a wide range of unnecessary and prohibited items.

BUS MISBEHAVIOR: Misbehavior on the school bus coming to or going from school endangers the lives of everyone on the bus and will NOT be tolerated. Misbehavior will be handled by a referral to the office and follow-up action by the principal. On pages 33 through 36, you will find the complete the bus rider policy and rules. Even if your child does not ride a bus to and from school, you will need to know this information. During the first week of school, each student will receive a bus contract form in their information packet to be returned signed, in order to ride a bus. (During the course of the school year they would need to ride a bus for field trips.)

CAB 13

Page 14: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

(Choosing Alternative Behaviors): An alternative to out of school suspension: a classroom has been designed for placement of students who are having difficulty conforming to the policies of the school. These students will be assigned to this alternative classroom by the Principal, Assistant Principal or Dean of Students. Assigned students will experience limited privileges and will be required to complete their regular classroom work under the supervision of classified personnel. The administrator making the assignment will determine the initial length of placement; however, failure to fully comply with all the rules may result in an extension of the assignment as recommended by the teacher in charge. CAB assignments are considered in-school suspensions.

CAFETERIA: Middle School Students are mature and responsible enough to behave in the cafeteria. The teacher that takes students to lunch will cover cafeteria procedures and cafeteria supervisors will monitor behavior. Lunchtime is a time to relax and rest so behavior expectations will be the same if not higher than those in the hallways or classroom. Other lunch arrangements will be made for those students unable to behave in the cafeteria. Although students can bring their lunch from home, State Law prohibits fast food and other commercially prepared food from being eaten in the cafeteria during lunch hours. Factory sealed beverages can also be consumed during lunch but be reminded that any open beverage containers is not allowed in student possession (water bottles, twist off pop bottles, etc.

DETENTION POLICY: Detention is the most used consequence for serious unacceptable behavior at our school. After-School Detentions are assigned each week on Mondays and Tuesdays (from 3:05 until 4:05 p.m.) and on Fridays (from 3:05 until 6:05 p.m.). All detentions will be assigned at least two days in advance (Friday Detentions should have at least three days notice) to allow for transportation to be arranged by the parent. Efforts will be made to contact parents, but the burden of informing the parents will rest with the student. A copy of the detention notice will be mailed to the home. Your child will sign the original copy of the notice on the day of the occurrence. If the student is dismissed from the detention or it is not served, a Friday Detention will be assigned. Students are responsible for arranging transportation home from the detention in advance. Students who have two after school detentions assigned and receive a third will receive a short-term suspension.

MISSED DETENTIONS: 1) A missed Monday/Tuesday detention (without a doctor's excuse) will result in an automatic assignment to Friday Detention. A parent can call the Assistant Principal or Dean of Students in advance to reschedule to another Monday or Tuesday if transportation is a problem. However, that detention cannot be rescheduled more than once. If the same detention is has to be rescheduled again, expect it to result in a Friday Detention or a day of CAB. 2) A missed Friday detention, without a doctor's excuse, will result in the student being suspended or sent to CAB for 1 to 3 days. 3) Any student who has two (2) Friday detentions assigned and is assigned to a third (3rd) Friday detention will receive a long-term suspension or CAB assignment (5-10 days). 4) Any student with an unexcused missed detention on file will not be allowed to participate in any of the following (until the Friday detention or suspension/CAB has been served): extra curricular activities; all assemblies. Excuses will be accepted within the first two days of return only!

FRIDAY DETENTION: Friday Detention is intended to provide a constructive and meaningful alternative to most suspensions. Pupils assigned to Friday Detentions must pick up assignments from teachers. Additional work may be assigned to an individual as determined by the school staff. Friday Detention is from 3:05 to 6:05 p.m. Students assigned to Friday Detention on or before Wednesday can serve the Friday of that week. Student s assigned to a Friday detention on/or after Thursday will be scheduled to serve the Friday of the following week. Parents are responsible for transporting their children from Friday Detention. The doors will be locked. So, the parent must be on time for pick-up promptly at 6:05 p.m. Failure to serve Friday Detention will result in CAB or a short-term suspension. Students who have two Friday Detentions assigned and -assigned a

third will receive a long-term suspension.

DISCIPLINARY REPORT

PROCESS: All disciplinary actions that are judged as serious, by teacher or principal, will be written up on a standard form called a disciplinary report. Students are required to sign all disciplinary reports; parent signatures are by teacher’s request only. This report will have three copies. The copies are for the parent/guardian, the principal and the student’s grade level team leader (teacher). The parent copy is mailed home. The principal’s copy will be posted in the computer and kept in your child’s disciplinary records. White copy: Parent/guardianYellow copy: AdministrationPink copy: Grade level team leader (teacher)

DRUGS AND ALCOHOL:

GMS & THE SCOTT COUNTY BOARDHAVE A “ZERO TOLERANCE

POLICY”. Any student found to be

dispensing alcohol or drugs on the school grounds or at any school related activity will be subject to suspension or expulsion and criminal sanctions imposed by the law. Any student using alcohol or drugs, under the influence or, in the possession of said substance on school grounds or at school related activities will be subject to suspension or expulsion and criminal sanctions imposed by the law.

Alcohol or dangerous drugs found in a student's personal belongings during school hours or at a school sponsored affair will be treated the same as the use of said substance as far as suspension or expulsion is concerned. If the principal or designee is reasonably convinced that he student is either possessing or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a parent or guardian of the student shall be notified. The parent will be requested to come to the school for a conference and to remove the student from school grounds. The local authorities may be notified. Further, the principal or designee shall refer the case to the Superintendent for possible

disciplinary action by the Scott County Board of Education. The Scott County Board shall comply with the provision of the Alcohol and Drugs Acts as outlined in state law and the guidelines developed to carry out the policy. (Legal Ref.: KRS 158.295)

Possession, use or being under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, counterfeit controlled substance or look alike (including caffeine pills or other over the counter stimulants) and/or possession of drug paraphernalia, the student will receive an immediate ten (10) days suspension with recommendation for expulsion for the first offense. Parents and appropriate juvenile authorities will be immediately notified when violation of laws governing use, possession sale of alcohol or other controlled substances has occurred.

The recommendation for expulsion may be waived to a ten (10) day suspension if the parent (s) or guardian (s): 1) Agree(s) to seek, at their expense, an evaluation of the student's alcohol/drug use by a qualified chemical dependency counselor acceptable to the school district. 2) Completes any and all treatment or recommendations made in such an evaluation. 3) If no treatment is recommended in the evaluation, the school may also require that the student meet with the school counselor on designated number of times to qualify for a waiver of the recommendation for expulsion.

16

Page 17: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

Failure to complete both the evaluation and the treatment as recommended by either the chemical dependency counselor or the school will result in immediate suspension with recommendation of expulsion. A second offense of the policy will result in immediate suspension with recommendation for expulsion.

Sale or transmission of alcoholic beverages, narcotics, drugs, counterfeit controlled substances or look-alike (including caffeine pills or other over the counter stimulants) the student will be immediately suspended, and a recommendation for expulsion will be made.

FIGHTING, THREATENING

OR BEING RUDE:Fighting is totally unacceptable and any student involved in or witnessing a confrontation situation (verbal or physical) will seek the assistance of the nearest adult staff member BEFORE, a fight starts. Being rude to a teacher, secretary, instructional aide, custodian, cafeteria worker, or even another student is totally unacceptable. All people who attend

GMS (student and staff) shall be treated with common courtesy in all situations. Threats to teachers or students, whether spoken, or implied, either in school or out, will NOT be tolerated. Students should be extremely careful in their actions, so that there can never be any question about what was intended.

REPEAT OFFENDER POLICY: Upon receipt of a sixth (6th) disciplinary report each semester (18 weeks), a parent conference will be held. This meeting should be attended by parent, student, all teachers of said student (at time of receipt), a principal (or designee), and other staff (as needed), examples could include counselor, school psychologist, etc. The purpose of this conference will be to create a plan that will encourage positive change in a student's behavior. Receipt of a seventh disciplinary report after said notification, but prior to conference, will result in suspension and conference is held.

17

Page 18: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

STUDENT COOPERATION: Cooperation with all teachers, school and district rules is expected. Poor attitudes will NOT be tolerated. (NOTE: Students should be reminded that behavior expectations at school related events such as dances, ball games, field trips, etc. are least as high as they are in the school building on a daily basis).

SUSPENSION, CAB, AFTER SUSPENSION, CAB, AFTER SCHOOL AND FRIDAY DETENTION SCHOOL AND FRIDAY DETENTION POLICIESPOLICIES:

Suspension from school is administered when the administrator considers that an individual has created a serious infraction of school rules. A student may be suspended from one to ten days. A student may be recommended to the principal for expulsion after the student has received five separate suspensions or a total of ten days suspension. (Suspension or Expulsion of Pupils, KRS 158-250, School Laws of Kentucky).

IF A STUDENT IS SUSPENDED OR EXPELLED, THEY ARE NOT ENTITLED TO MAKE UP THAT HOMEWORK OR RECEIVE CREDIT FOR IT. All pupils admitted to the common schools shall comply with the lawful regulations for the government of the schools. Willful disobedience or defiance over authority of teachers, habitual profanity or vulgarity or

other gross violations of propriety or law constitutes cause for suspension or expulsion from school. The Superintendent, Principal or Assistant Principal of any school may suspend a pupil for such misconduct, but shall report such action in writing immediately to the Superintendent.

The Board of Education of any school district may expel any pupil for misconduct as defined in this section. Such action may not be taken until the parent or guardian having legal custody or control of the pupil has had an opportunity to have a hearing before the Board. The decision of the Board shall be final.

If a student is suspended from school, he/she will NOT be allowed on any school grounds, school buses or to participate in extra curricular or co-curricular activities until the student is reinstated in school. Following a suspension, a parent will be required to escort the student to the school office for a conference with a school principal before the student will be allowed to return to regular classes.

UNNECESSARYITEMS:

Students need to avoid distractions to themselves and others in a classroom, which requires that all their energy be put to the task at hand. Examples of needless items in school include: Walkman, cassette players, CD’s, CD players, electronic games, yo-yos, laser pens, hats, sunglasses, toys, skateboards, squirt guns and electronic beepers (including watches with alarms) and large sums of money. Any personal items not directly related to classroom activity are not to be brought to school.Any faculty member may decide how the item can be regained (end of school day, by parent only, end of school year, etc.), will take items of this type on sight.

GMS assumes no responsibility for 18

Page 19: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

any confiscated item that may be lost while in storage. Cell phones are not to be out in class and must be turned off. If deemed necessary for after school transportation, then the student will be allowed to use a cell phone after dismissal or extra curricular activities. It is best the students keep them locked in their locker.

TARDINESS: Tardiness to school and to all classes will be handled by the classroom teacher and team action plans as follows: 1st offense - written warning; 2nd offense - Friday Detention; 3rd offense - Friday Detention and so on. Each class will handle tardiness separately and each student will begin each new grading period with a clean slate. Learning the important personal responsibility of being at school every day and being on time is a very important goal for the middle school student. Students who become truant (as defined by the district wide Student Code of Conduct for K - 8th grade) will be dealt with by the attendance clerk, the teacher, the individual team, the administration or the district wide attendance officer.

ABSENCES AND EXCUSES POLICY

ATTENDANCE GOAL STATEMENT: The Scott County Board of Education views the matter of student attendance as one of its primary concerns. Accordingly, the Board encourages the active cooperation of teachers, students, parents, and administrators in maintaining a high level of student attendance at all Scott County Schools. Students are expected to attend the school in which they are enrolled, regularly and punctually, in order to benefit maximally from the instructional program and to develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline, and responsibility. The Scott County

Board of Education believes that there is a direct relationship between poor attendance and lack of achievement. Students who have good attendance generally achieve higher grades, enjoy school more, and are much better adjusted to live in our society.

TRUANCY DEFINED: Any pupil who has been absent from school without valid excuse for three days or more, or tardy without valid excuse on three (3) days or more, is a truant. A pupil who has been reported as a truant three or more times is a habitual truant. Absence for less than a half-day shall be considered tardiness.

ATTENDANCE CLERK: The Principal shall designate a staff member to serve as attendance clerk or student services secretary. The person shall be responsible for carrying out the K-12 attendance policy.

EXCUSED ABSENCES: A student shall be permitted a total of six (6) excused absences per year upon presenting a parental note to the homeroom teacher or attendance clerk for the following reasons:

(Doctor's excuses do not count toward the six days of excused absences.)

1. Death or severe illness in the pupil's immediate family. The number of days excused for a death will be

determined by the circumstances involved and will be kept to the

minimum necessary as determined 19

Page 20: GEORGETOWN MIDDLE SCHOOL Han…  · Web viewSTUDENT CONDUCT: Georgetown Middle School can be the best possible place to work and learn when students, parents, teachers, and principals

by the Principal or designee.

3. Religious holidays and practices. 4. Court appearance when

subpoena or citation requires the student's presence.

5. Driver's permit/license test, which will be excused for a portion of the day.

6. Cultural and educational activities (up to 10 days) as approved in advance by the Principal.

** The Attendance Policy could slightly change. The Attendance Committee could not meet until mid-summer (after the time this handbook was sent off to the printers.)

ATTENDANCE COMMITTEE: The Central Office Attendance Committee shall consist of the Director of Pupil Personnel (DPP) and two (2) parents to be appointed by the Superintendent. Their primary function shall be to hear appeals.

MAKE-UP WORK: Work missed due to excused absences may be made up by arrangement with the teacher. We would like to

encourage our students to use the homework hotlines to retrieve homework. The student is responsible for making arrangements with the teacher for completing make-up work. It is the student's responsibility to obtain their homework due to an absence. A student should be absent more than two days before requesting the office to circulate a homework assignment sheet. Upon the third day of excused absence, the parent should notify the office of this request before 11:00 a.m. Then the collected homework will be available in the office between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. Please make sure to have your child’s combination to their locker so you can retrieve their books (if needed for the work).

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: Absence for reasons other than those listed in this policy shall be unexcused. Work missed due to unexcused absences may not be made up.UNEXCUSED TARDY: Tardy for reasons such as: missed the bus, car trouble, and oversleeping is unexcused.

EXCEPTION: Students are NOT entitled to or receive credit for make-up daily work missed for absences because of suspension from school but are allowed to do the following:
