Ashley Schneider Born and raised within the automotive industry, and never

looked back! I started washing cars from a young age and have

worked my way up through various positions gaining as much experience as possible. When it came time to choose a career path it was our dealer rep at the time that had spoken strongly of the Automotive Business School of Canada and strongly advised me to attend. After completing my first two years, I do not have a single regret and I love the industry more than ever. Now into my third year of schooling along side this role, it has provided me with many opportunities to bring my insight on marketing into the show. I hope some of the changes we have made this year will reach as many people within the community of Barrie and surrounding communities to bring them together for a weekend of experience like no other! I hope to see you all out there on the weekend of the show, I know it will be the best one yet – happy 30th anniversary!

Michael Anderson I am currently a fourth-year degree student and couldn’t

be happier to finish off my ABSC career as a member of the Auto

Show Student Director Committee. I started at the ABSC in the diploma program, from which I graduated and then transferred to the degree program.

I joined the automotive industry while I was on a grade 12 co-op placement, I was in the body shop at my local Ford dealership in Midland, ON. A few years later, I realized that the ABSC was where I needed to be. It was the best decision I could have made, and I haven’t looked back since. My first college co-op was as a service adviser for a Chrysler dealer in my hometown; the second was at SCI MarketView in Markham, ON as a dealer support specialist; and for the third I was back to SCI MarketView as an account coordinator.

I have participated in the Auto Show every year and it is shaping up to be the best one yet! I cannot wait to watch it all unfold!

Matt Garwood It became very clear at an

early age, that cars and the automotive industry would be

part of my life for a long time to come. I wanted to turn my passion in to a hobby and started Karting in high school; from there my love of cars grew.

When it became time for me to choose a path I would follow, it was a natural decision to enroll in the Automotive Business School of Canada.

Over the past three years I have been a driver in the Formula 1200 Championship Series racing across various locations within the province. I have been able to take my experience and success from my motorsports program and use what I have learned to focus on making the 30th Anniversary Auto Show the best year yet. Over the past summer I had the opportunity to work with an automotive event planning company, this has provided me with the knowledge and tools to be successful. The possibilities are endless

I was thrilled to be the Sponsorship and Performance Director for the 2015 Georgian college Auto Show. Being a part of a energetic team and to learn a greater knowledge of the automotive marketing and sponsorship sector within the industry has been a experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. Meeting various people throughout the year who help put the show on and representing Georgian college truly is an honour.

I hope you all enjoy the 2015 Georgian College Auto Show!

Katheryn Abou Chakra The Automotive Business School

of Canada has so far been an incredible experience. I am a third-

year degree student at the ABSC and I chose this path because I have a passion for business and an interest in the automotive industry. The enthusiasm and passion that can be found in this program is so strong; this can be seen by how all the automotive students are so excited to partake in this year’s auto show. I have been involved in the auto show for every year that I have been at ABSC; one year as a co-captain and the second as an ambassador. This year, I decided to take on a bigger role at the auto show as one of the directors because I wanted to learn how a large event is planned and gain more experience in the automotive industry. This also provided me with an opportunity to become more involved with my school and meet more students in the program. I had the privilege to be chosen for this role and consider this to be one of the most rewarding experiences. There has definitely been challenging times during this position but I had the support of my team to turn things from negative to positive. I hope everyone enjoys the Georgian College Auto Show as much as we enjoyed organizing it.

Michael Vander Heyden Since a very young age, I have

always had a strong passion for cars. As I got older, it became clear

that I wanted to match my passion for cars with future career opportunities. I found out about the Automotive Business School of Canada through a family friend. Through getting more information, I realized that this was the perfect program for me matching my passion for cars with my interest in business. Within less than a year of finding out about ABSC, I had made the decision to move all the way to Barrie from Montreal. During my first year at ABSC I had the opportunity to participate in the Georgian College Auto Show as a product ambassador. During this position I realized that one day becoming a director of the Auto Show

MEET THE AUTO SHOW STUDENT COMMITTEE

was something I truly wanted to achieve. Fast forward to present day, I consider myself grateful to have the opportunity to fulfill this goal. Being on the 2015 Auto Show committee has enabled me to try out new ideas and introduce innovative technologies causing an increase in efficiency. This role is provided to students as a blank canvas with free range to enhance and add new ideas making every year consistently better.

As host of the Amazing Race Canada, CTV’s top regularly scheduled TV program in 2013, Jon Montgomery has become a beloved Canadian icon. His contagious patriotism and dynamic

public presence was noticed by the world in 2010 during a now-famous victory walk through Whistler Village after winning the Olympic gold medal in skeleton racing.

Jon graduated from Georgian’s Business Administration – Automotive Marketing program in 2000. It was during his return visit to Barrie for his graduation that Jon saw the 2000 Olympics on television and told his friends that he wanted to compete when the games came to Vancouver. The fact that he was not involved in any eligible winter sport did not keep him from his dream.

A little more than two years would go by before he would discover how he might get there...on a skeleton sled.  His subsequent hard work and dedication helped make his dream become a reality.

The car auctioneer/salesman now uses his marketing, public speaking and people skills honed during his time at Georgian’s Automotive Business School of Canada at every turn, including while appearing on Oprah, the Juno Awards, as a television host and through his many professional speaking engagements.

PERFORMANCE

ACCELERATE YOUR SUCCESS

When you celebrate a 30-year anniversary, you make sure that you have some pizzazz.

For Matt Garwood, director of performance and sponsorship, and a second-year automotive marketing diploma student at Georgian College, it means that you stage a show that will make everyone come back again and again.

For the 30th anniversary of the Georgian College Auto Show, Garwood and friends have put together a program that should keep everyone interested.

“We have encouraged exhibitors to host interactive displays to show attendees how different elements of the automobile world works,” Garwood said.

Mario Design, a local company that specializes in the design, production and installation of large-format digital graphics, will be demonstrating their techniques in customizing your ride to make it an

Lindsay Rice isn’t too sure right now about where her career will end up.Two things that have always interested her are cars, fast cars, probably race cars and business.

What she sees, as a second-year student in the Automotive Marketing program at Georgian College, is an opportunity to be able to marry her two interests.

affordable marketing machine on wheels or a public expression of your passions. For drivers who may have crimped their fender in an ill-advised parking manoeuvre or

been victim to one of this past winter’s driving challenges, Zenetec and 3M Canada and their technicians will be on site for three days, turning vehicles that have been involved in a collision back to being safety tested and roadworthy right before your eyes.

Organizers want to make sure there is something for everyone. “We don’t want it (the Auto Show) to be something just for an older demographic who

are looking to buy a car,” Garwood said. After staging the Auto Show at Georgian for 30 years, the students know they are

part of a large, dynamic industry and a large part of the economy and there is always something to learn.

To keep you safe, Drivesafe will be on hand with their distracted driving simulator to show drivers, young and old, exactly what the dangers are if you are not paying attention when you are behind the wheel.

And in keeping with the idea of both hands on the wheel, local drivers and owners of area sport cars will be on hand to answer questions and show off their rides.

And finally there is Kidzone, lots of fun for all ages with the biggest treat of all for kids big and small is the chance to meet Batman and check out the wicked Batmobile. The caped crusader has taken time out his crime-fighting schedule to spend the weekend at the event.

“We want this as a day for the whole family to come out and enjoy and we made sure there is something for all ages,” Garwood said. “This is our 30th anniversary, so we definitely want to make a splash.”

By J.T. McVeigh

By J.T. McVeigh

“In all honesty, I came into the program with an open mind. I knew at some point that I wanted to race whether or not it would lead to anything I don’t know, but when I started going to Georgian I was just excited that I was going to sit in class and learn about the automotive industry,” Rice said on her Bluetooth device while driving back from a day at Mosport race park.

“It’s just a starting point for me and the business side is a plus, because you get the fundamental business knowledge that you need in order to be in the business world,” she added.

Rice knows she has a lot of opportunities to investigate before she is prepared to just settle. She appreciates that opportunities could take her anywhere, but if it came down to a dream job, she is pretty much open to a where she would like to end up.

Motorsports tops the list at the moment, but Rice recognizes that there are a number of jobs that she would like to try first.

Perhaps even opening up her own business, maybe market a product, a project that she could see all the way through.

Rice is realistic enough to realize that the industry has a lot of doors that she has the chance to open.

“There are many jobs that I would like to try before I get to that point of selecting a dream job,” Rice said, “but I want to be able to fully understand how it all works.”

DISTRACTED DRIVING SIMULATORIn the blink of an eye, the vehicle in

front of you can suddenly stop, the weather can take a nasty turn

or an animal can dart in front of you. If you’re alert and trained in safe

driving techniques, these challenges can be just that: problems to overcome. But if you’re distracted – talking on your cellphone without hands-free technology, texting or eating – that sudden adversity can turn to tragedy.

With that in mind, Allstate Insurance and Pixel Media Communications will unveil its unique distracted driving simulator at this year’s Georgian College Auto Show.

“This simulator really gives you a sense of the perils of distracted driving,” said David Ng of Pixel. “Distracted driving has become a huge problem and this really helps people understand how dangerous it is.”

Dave Dawson, Special to The Examiner

Once a person is situated behind the wheel, he or she is given a cellphone and asked to negotiate the simulator on a virtual course. The driver is filmed so they can get a first-hand look at the obvious distraction that occurs when, for example, they’re trying to read a text.

“People are often very surprised to see their reactions, to see how their eyes – and their attention – are focused on the cellphone and not on driving,” said Ng.

“The message we’re trying to get out is that it’s a dangerous practice,” said Ng. “Is that text message really that important? The answer is obvious: it isn’t worth someone’s life.”

And while drivers now face fines if they’re caught driving while distracted, many still do not consider it dangerous, said Ng. That became obvious at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto where the simulator was a popular attraction.

“Over the course of 10 days, we had about 10,000 people try the simulator,” said Ng. “Only a handful of people refused to accept the cellphone that we asked them to use. They simply said they would never use a cellphone while driving. The rest – about 9,990 people – didn’t think twice about accepting the phone and that is telling.”

This is the first time the simulator will be part of the Georgian College Auto Show. There is no charge to take a spin in the unique simulator and free prizes will be given to participants.

The exhibit will be in the performance area all weekend.

Visitors to this year’s Georgian College Auto Show are going to have the chance to experience two entirely different automotive experiences.Pfaff Auto, a longtime partner with the Auto Show and Georgian

College, has always been raising eyebrows with their Pfaff Porsche test track.

What a lot of people may not know is that the Pfaff family extends beyond Porsche, but also six other highly desirable manufacturers including Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Audi and the more exotic McLaren and Pagani at specific dealerships throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

This year, Pfaff has offered to bring large trailer with a number of different cars from their other dealerships and offer the same experi-ence, but this time on a tight autocross track.

“In the past, we have had the Pfaff fast track where the cars would drift around the course that we had wetted down, we met with Pfaff earlier in the year to discuss the possibility of them bringing a num-ber of the different cars they represent,” said Katheryn Abou-Chakra, director of community and show events.

Instead of just drifting around in a circle, an auto-cross track is a little more structured, shows how the cars perform and Pfaff gets to show more of their brand.

On the other side of the automotive world is the electric car.Plug ‘n Drive is a non-profit organization, based in Ontario commit-ted to promoting the adoption of electric cars to emphasize their environmental and economic benefits.

“Visitors to the show will have a chance to test drive an electric car, but what Plug ‘n Drive does is contacts a number of the different manufacturers and they ask if they can borrow an electric vehicle for the weekend,” Abou-Chakra said.

This year, visitors can expect have a chance to drive Nissan’s Leaf, Chevrolet’s Volt and Mitsubishi’s i-MiEV  among others.

The college has asked Georgian automotive students and the college’s own Research Analyst students who are working with the Plug ‘n Drive volunteers, test drivers’ attitudes by taking surveys before and after the road test drive to see how the opinions may change.

Other electric vehicles owners will be on site to answer questions, including members of the Tesla owners group.

Abou-Chakra had a chance to sit in a Tesla and said it is like a computer on wheels.

“We have a charging station hub at the Barrie campus and that’s where Plug ‘n Drive will be,” Abou-Chakra said. “It is just a good pro-

motion for green driving and a chance to prove that electric vehicles are in no way worse or weaker for driving than gas powered ones.

“It’s just promoting a healthy environment.”

TESLA MODEL SDETROIT, April 8 (Reuters) - Tesla Motors Inc began taking orders earlier

this year for a new base version of its Model S electric sedan that is $5,000 more expensive than its predecessor, but offers better performance,

longer range and more features, including all-wheel drive. The Model S 70D is priced from $76,070 and will begin shipping to

customers in late May.The 70D is so named because it has a 70kWh battery pack and dual electric

motors rated at a combined 514 horsepower. Driving range between charges is 240 miles.

All are improvements over the outgoing Model S 60, which was priced from $71,070 and was equipped with a single 380hp electric motor and a 60kWh battery pack with a range of 208 miles.

The Model S 70D gets “a slight price increase, but it’s a huge value increase,” Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, said in an interview. “Customers wanted something that had more range and they really wanted all-wheel drive.”

Demand for the two single-motor cars - the Model S 60 and the $81,070 Model S 80 - has declined since Tesla last year introduced the dual-motor 85D and its high-performance sibling, the P85D, whose sticker price starts at $105,670 and ranges up to $135,000.

Musk said fewer than 10 percent of Tesla buyers opted for the rear-wheel-drive Model S 60. For now, the company will continue selling the single-engine Model S 80, even though the lower-priced 70D has more power, quicker acceleration and a higher top speed.

“But we think that all-wheel drive is what most customers want so that’s our focus,” Musk said.

Tesla is phasing in these revisions of the Model S, its only product, several months ahead of the launch of the Model X crossover.

Tesla’s new base Model S costs more, but adds features and powerThe Model X will be offered only with dual electric motors

and an 85kWh battery pack. Musk indicated the Model X also may be available with a smaller battery pack, at a lower price point, similar to the Model S 70D.

Like the Model S sedan, the Model X crossover will come with a package of semi-automatic “autopilot” driving features, including hands-free steering.

The company said last week that it delivered a record 10,030 Model S sedans to customers in the first quarter and expects to deliver 55,000 vehicles, including the Model X, globally this year.

Tesla stock closed Tuesday at $203.25 on the Nasdaq.

SAN JOSE, Ca.-- Jeep is set to bring the brand’s legendary ruggedness to the global small vehicle market with the launch of Renegade, the newest member of the family and the company’s first entry in the small SUV segment.Built on a new platform, the 2015 Renegade comes in three models, Sport, North and

Trailhawk in 4x4 and front-wheel drive. The new Jeep was designed and engineered in North America and is being built in Italy for markets in 100 countries.

Two engine/transmission combinations handle the power demands: a turbocharged 1.4L four cylinder turbo linked to a six-speed manual transmission is standard in Sport and North models while a 2.4L four cylinder with nine-speed automatic is standard in Trailhawk and optional in North.

The exterior design leaves no doubt that this is a Jeep but the tiny details are impressive, like tail lights inspired by military jerry cans but with a centre graphic of the front of a Willys Jeep, a unique little indent on the gas filler door that indicates where to push to open it and the Jeep-on-a-hill profile in the moulding on the right side of the windshield.

Interior design chief Klaus Busse said “we took our youngest designers and told them to have fun and design something attractive to them.”

The Renegade’s tachometer is a classic example. Instead of the regular redline, max revs are indicated by a splash of colour.

“We had gone paint-balling,” says Busse. “I got hit on the face shield right in front

of my right eye. That indicator is inspired by the splash of colour on the shield.”

Overhead, Renegade can be equipped with one of two class-exclusive My Sky open-air roof systems. Removable panels, which weight just 10 lb., are stored under the rear load floor.

Given the length of the Renegade, there’s a surprisingly large cargo area behind the rear seat, which becomes downright huge when the seats are folded.

The San Jose area is ideal for testing the abilities of the rugged little SUV. There’s a wide variety of road surfaces, from smooth freeway to broken back-road pavement. Those narrow roads with their twists, turns and hills are an ideal playground for the Renegade.

Limited time, a large contingent of writers and a finite number of vehicles mean I don’t get to try the 1.4L powertrain or all the models in the lineup but my time in Limited and North editions with the 2.4 and 9-speed automatic was an eye-opener.

Off-the-line power is impressive and the Renegade is happy to cruise at freeway speeds. More importantly, it’s more than ready to play in the corners. Steering response is quick and the little ute hangs onto the pavement even when pushed hard in the corners.

The fully independent suspension soaks up humps and hollows with ease as frequency selective damping (FSD) prevents bouncing.

So the trip to the off-road area has been a pleasant, quiet, smooth yet fun experience, but now we’re where things get rugged as we take to the Trailhawk to take on water holes, big, humps, rocks, steep rises and even steeper declines.

Trailhawk is standard with 2.4L engine and 9-speed automatic along with Jeep Active Drive Low with a 20:1 crawl ratio and Selec-Terrain with added Rock mode. The off-road course uses it all, including the 30.5-degree approach, 25.7-degree breakover and 34.3-degree departure angles and capability to wade through 19 inches of water.

If things get a little tough Trailhawk’s skid plates protect the undersides.

The little ute easily climbs a steep twisting dirt trail and hill descent control handles the 10% downhill grade so well, I feel I should step on the gas.

The trip back to San Jose sticks mainly to major routes. It’s quiet. Wind and road noise are effectively muted. It’s smooth and the North model I’m driving maintains directional stability even in a brisk crosswind.

The Subaru Legacy sedan was in a tough category – Family Car Under $30k – at the Canadian Car of the Year competition, recently

staged in Niagara Falls by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).

But it had a couple of things going for it that its opposition – the new Toyota Camry and Chrysler 200 – couldn’t match.

And they were big things: Subaru’s standard symmetrical all-wheel drive and EyeSight technology, which includes pre-collision braking, brake assist and throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and lane swap warning. Pretty amazing for a car priced at $28,955.

EyeSight, which has earned praise from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, processes stereo images of vehicles travelling in front, as well as obstacles, traffic lanes, etc. This information is relayed to the EyeSight computer, which networks with the car’s braking system and electronic throttle control. The system also is capable of detecting pedestrians in the Legacy’s path and can activate in order to mitigate or even avoid a collision. Under certain circumstances, EyeSight is able to bring the car to a complete stop.

Legacy has an edge on its rivals in two key areas - symmetrical all-wheel drive

and exclusive EyeSight technology

The 2015 Legacy starts at $23,495, but even with its as-tested price it still was cheaper than either of its rivals. Standard equipment in the base model includes heated front seats, power glass sunroof, 10-way power driver’s seat, automatic dual-zone climate control, active torque vectoring, an infotainment system with 6.2-inch display and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes.

Like many Subarus, Legacy is powered by a 2.5L horizontally opposed engine that makes 175 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque. This “boxer” engine is connected to a continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters and burns regular 87 octane gasoline. Predicted fuel economy is 9.0L/100 km city and 6.5L/100 km highway – both numbers better than those of Camry or 200.

In AJAC’s acceleration tests, Legacy was slower than either of its rivals, sprinting from 0-100 km/h in 10.0 seconds and from 80-120 km/h in 7.0 seconds. (The 200, with its 295-hp V6 and 9-speed automatic was easily the quickest off the line.)

As an AJAC judge, Family Car Under $30k was one of my assigned categories. I rated Legacy best for driver position, occupant environment, vehicle dynamics, handling and price/value.

It may not come out on top (category winners will be announced Dec. 2), but it sure is worth a look if you’re shopping for a new family sedan.
