ADS markets a full line of nonwovengeotextiles from Propex a world-renowned innovative and experi-enced producer of polypropylene tex-tile fibers.

Nonwoven geotextiles are designedto filter soil particles from drainagesystems, and stabilize roadways toincrease the performance life of thesestructures. With the world’s largestnonwoven facility and ISO-9002 certification, Propex is dedicated tothe production of high quality, needle-punched, staple fiber geotextiles.Continuous filaments of polypropy-lene are extruded on the world’slargest fiber extrusion line. Fibers arethen cut, opened, laid into a web,needle-punched, heat-set and rolledto create Propex nonwovens. Aftercareful inspection and testing, theseengineered products are then readyfor shipment to job sites all over theworld.

Whether constructing a roadway, designing an erosion control plan orinstalling a subsurface drainage sys-tem, you can count on the provenbenefits of Propex needle-punchednonwoven geotextiles. Nonwovengeotextiles are approved by manylocal, state and federal agencies, including the Federal HighwayAdministration, U.S. Army Corps ofEngineers, the EnvironmentalProtection Agency and AASHTO.Nonwovens are ideal for a variety ofcivil engineering applications, including:

• Subsurface Drainage• Roadway Separation• Railroad Stabilization• Hard Armor Underlayment• Landfill Leachate Collection• Underground Detention/Retention

Systems

Subsurface DrainagePropex lightweight and medium-weight nonwoven geotextiles prove tobe excellent filters in subsurfacedrainage applications. The needle-punch construction of the fabricallows subsurface water to pass intothe drainage pipe for proper channel-ing. At the same time, the nonwovenprevents adjacent soil from cloggingthe system and causing costly exca-vation and repair. When properlyselected, nonwoven geotextiles areeffective in most soils, particularly inenvironments where silt and clay areprominent.

Roadway Separation/Railroad StabilizationDeploying a Propex nonwoven geo-textile directly on subgrades extendsroad life by preventing fine subgradesoil particles from migrating and inter-mixing into the aggregate and ballastbase course. Propex 401 meetsAASHTO M288 Class 3 standards, and Propex 801 exceeds the require-ments for Class 1 textiles used inroadways.

Hard ArmorUnderlaymentSoil migration and the buildup ofhydrostatic pressure are two of theleading causes of failure in hardarmor, such as rock riprap and con-crete block systems, along shorelinesand waterways. Propex nonwovengeotextiles act as a filter to help pre-vent subsurface soil migration andrelieve hydrostatic pressure beneathhard armor erosion control systems.Propex 801 and 401 meet therequire ments for Class 1 and Class 3erosion control geotextiles, respec-tively, as outlined in AASHTO M288.

Landfill LeachateCollectionWhen placed in intimate contact witha geonet or drainage stone, medium-weight Propex nonwoven geotextilescan filter soil and waste while allow-

ing water and leachate to pass. Anefficient design utilizing recommend-ed Propex nonwoven geotextiles canlead to proper leachate managementin new landfill cells, and rapid surfacewater collection and removal in closure plans.

Subsurface Retention/Detention SystemsUnderground storm water retentionsystems incorporate large diameterpipe to hold runoff in a defined areauntil the surrounding soil can acceptit. Detention systems, on the otherhand, consist of large diameter pipethat detains all runoff exceeding theallowable amount and releases itthrough an outlet pipe at a controlledrate. Some systems are a combina-tion of both. In each case, subsurfaceretention/detention systems provide

maximum use of land, require littlemaintenance, and do not diminish theaesthetics of the development.

Non woven geotextiles play a keyrole in maintaining the efficiency ofthese underground retention andcombination systems. The pipe andsurrounding angular stone backfill areencapsulated with non-woven geotex-tile to prevent soil intrusion into theangular stone backfill/water storagearea. Propex 601 & 801 non-wovengeotextile meets AASHTO M288class 2 separation requirements forsuch appllications.

Underground retention/detention systems use ADS large diameter pipe and Propex geotextiles toeffectively control stormwater runoff.

Propex heavyweight nonwoven geotextilesallow the construction of landfill drainagelayers without fear of liner damage.

Engineers around the world are spec-ifying Propex woven monofilament fil-tration geotextiles and ADS N-12 pipefor a variety of civil and environmen-tal engineering applications.

The Propex fabrics are manufacturedfrom extruded polypropylene monofil-aments woven together to form adimensionally stable construction fab-ric. This process produces a premiumfilter that is extremely resistant to soiland biological clogging. A full range ofhigh quality filtration fabrics has beencreated to offer designers severalchoices for percent open area (POA),the single most important property inthe selection of a woven geotextile fil-ter.

These types of geotextiles are usedprimarily for:

• Hard Armor Underlayment• Subsurface Drainage• Landfill Leachate Collection

Hard ArmorUnderlaymentSoil migration beneath flexible hardarmor systems is the primary causeof failures. Woven monofilament filtra-tion geotextiles prevent soil migrationby retaining particles while still allow-ing water to flow through the fabric. These monofilaments offer varioushydraulic and filtration properties

such as percent open area, apparentopening size and water flow rate.Cutoff pipe drains placed above hardarmor systems are often beneficial tothe structure.

Proper geotextile selection will ensureexcellent clogging resistance, thuseliminating the build-up of pore waterpressure. Propex 104F and 111F aretypically used in both inland waterwayand shoreline erosion control sys-tems. Propex 117F features the high-est percent open area (17%) andwater flow rate of all Propex’smonofilaments. This geotextile hasbeen engineered for high impactshorelines, where large hydraulic gra-dients and clogging are the primaryconcerns.

Subsurface DrainagePropex 104F and 111F are also idealfiltration products for subsurfacedrainage systems. For example, ahigh groundwater table warrants theuse of these styles of premium wovenmonofilament geotextile filters.Drainage pipes wrapped with amonofilament geotextile providegreater resistance to soil particleclogging, adding years of service lifeto the drainage structure. All Propexwoven filtration geotextiles exceedthe American Association of StateHighway Transportation Officials’(AASHTO) M288 physical require-ments for Class 2 subsurfacedrainage and permanent erosion control.

Landfill LeachateCollectionPropex 111F and 117F woven filtra-tion geotextiles provide excellent filtration characteristics when encap-sulating coarse gravel in leachate collection systems in solid waste

landfills. The monofilament yarnshave less surface area for potentialbiological growth, which helps toeliminate long-term clogging con-cerns.

Five years of testing conducted at theGeosynthetics Research Instituteresulted in a recommendation to theU.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) that, when using awoven monofilament geotextile inleachate collection systems, a mini-mum POA of 10 percent should bespecified (e.g. Propex 111F). Someindustry experts are more conserva-tive and opt for Propex 117F whichpossesses the properties required toensure long-term functionality inleachate collection systems.

Propex woven monofilament geotextiles arevery resistant to biological clogging, makingthem ideal for landfill leachate collectionsystems.

Since Propex’s first involvement inthe geotextile industry more than 20years ago, hundreds of millions ofsquare yards of high quality wovenfabrics have been produced andinstalled all over the world.

After extruding and slitting a polypro-pylene film, an ISO-9002 certifiedmanufacturing process weaves indi-vidual flat yarns into geotextiles fea-turing high tensile strengths at lowelongation (high tensile modulus). These characteristics allow Propexwoven geotextiles to distribute loads, reduce rutting and extend the life ofpaved and unpaved roadways.

Unpaved RoadwaysPropex woven geotextiles help saveon aggregate placement and repaircosts associated with constructingand maintaining unpaved roadways.A soft subgrade covered with theappropriate Propex woven geotextilestabilizes an access or haul road byspreading applied loads over a widerfoundation, reducing rut depths andpreventing aggregate contaminationby the underlying subgrade soils. This reduces maintenance costs, improves roadway life and permitsunrestricted flow of traffic.

Subgrade strength is often measuredby the California Bearing Ratio(CBR). Depending upon the actualstrength of the subgrade, Propexwoven geotextiles have the ability toperform several different functions. These range from Reinforcement onweak subgrades (CBR <= 3%) toSeparation on firm foundation soils(CBR >= 8%). As expected, weakersubgrades demand stronger wovengeotextiles and more favorable soilsrequire less robust geotextiles.

Propex “ST”series of wovengeotextiles canreduce aggregatethickness inunpaved roads byas much as 50%.

These geotextilesare also effectivein paved roads asshown below.

Paved RoadwaysThe “ST” series of Propex wovengeotextiles offer an inexpensive andtime-proven means of extending thelife of paved roadways and parkinglots. Since subgrade contamination isthe leading cause of pavement fail-ure, highway engineers typicallythicken aggregate layers using sacrifi-cial aggregate to offset the expectedlosses. By unrolling a high modulusPropex woven geotextile directly onthe subgrade during construction, aggregate is permanently separatedfrom finer soils below. This preventsintrusion of the subgrade into theaggregate and improves the subsur-face drainage of roadways. Even withthe rigors of heavy truck traffic, aPropex woven geotextile allowsaggregate layers to maintain theiroriginal design thickness.

The expected life ofpaved roads andparking lots isextended with aPropex woven geotextile by perma-nently separating thesubgrade from theaggregate.

Wovens for SedimentControlOnce fastened to posts and properlyinstalled, Propex woven geotextilesare also effective in controlling sedi-ment laden runoff from construction

sites. These woven silt fence fabricshave been recognized by the EPA asa Best Management Practice (BMP)and offer a unique combination of UVresistance, strength and hydraulicproperties.

Picking the RightWoven GeotextilePropex offers five standard wovengeotextiles for soil separation, stabi-lization and reinforcement functions inpaved and unpaved roadways.Propex 200ST, 250ST and 315STmeet AASHTO M288 construction requirements.

For more demanding soil reinforce-ment applications exceeding theAASHTO criteria, Propex offers highstrength woven geotextiles. Whenyou encounter very soft soils or othercritical soil reinforcement applica-tions, these unique twill weaves formrobust fabrics with high tensilestrengths and superior hydraulic char-acteristics.

Propex silt fences trap sediment before it canpollute surface water ways.
