MI.GE-1002 Cone Drop Test Apparatus Method to determine the resistance of geosynthetics to penetration by steel cone dropped from a fixed height, as a simulation of dropping sharp stones on their surface. Generally applicable to all geosynthetics. However, the test principle may not be applicable to some types of products. The specimen is clamped between two steel rings. A steel cone (45° tip angle, 1000 g) is dropped from a height of 500 mm onto the centre of the specimen. The degree of penetration is measured by insertion of a graduated cone into the hole. Permittivity Tester

These test methods cover procedures for determining the hydraulic conductivity (water permeability) of geotextiles in terms of permittivity under standard testing conditions, in the uncompressed state. Included are two procedures: the constant head method and the falling head method. In Constant Head Test: - A head of 50 mm water is maintained on the geotextile throughout the test. The quantity of flow is measured versus time. The constant head test is used when the flow rate of water through the geotextile is so large that it is difficult to obtain readings of head change versus time in the falling head test. In Falling Head Test: - A column of water is allowed to flow through the geotextile and reading of head changes versus time is taken. The flow rate of water through the geotextile shall be slow enough to obtain accurate readings. Meets: - ASTM- D 4491 – 99a, IS-14324

MI.GE-1005 Dry Sieve Test Apparatus (Apparent Opening Size (AOS)) The test involves sieving rounded particle sizes for which 5% or less by weight pass through the geotextile. The Apparent Opening Size (AOS) is defined as ‘Retained On’ size of that fraction expressed as a standard sieve number (size). The test is widely used for relative comparison amongst the geotextiles. Thus AOS is a means of correlating geotextile pore structure to an equivalent screen mesh size. Specially devised clamps (25 mm wide) with a gauge length of 100 mm are placed across 200 mm square samples or 200 mm x100 mm samples. The sample is then subjected to tension at a specified rate until failure occurs. It is widely used by manufacturers as a quality control tool and as such is the most commonly reported tensile strength value. An outline of an isosceles trapezoid is marked on a rectangular specimen (150 mm x 75 mm) cut for the determination of tearing strength, (with a 6 to 9 mm cut) and the nonparallel sides of the trapezoid marked on the specimen are clamped in parallel jaws of the Tensile Testing System. MI.GE-1008 Index Puncture Test (Ball Bursting Strength of Textiles) The geotextile specimen is clamped to obtain an inside diameter of 44.45 mm and force is applied through steel ball having 25 mm diameter at the rate of 305 mm/min and continue at that speed until the specimen bursts. Record to the nearest 0.5 N the ball-bursting strength of the specimen. Meets: - ASTM D-3787 MI.GE-1009 Hydrodynamic Sieve Test Apparatus: The apparatus consists of two test drums of 14 cm dia and 10 cm effective length with 16 nos. of 4 mm dia rods provided circumferentially at equal spacing to hold the geotextile specimen in position. Two troughs to contain the test drums are supported on horizontal axis, facilitating free rotation and capable of being filled with distilled water to a level of 20 mm below the drum axis. The clearance between the trough and the geotextile could be maintained at about 40 mm. This test method at this point has only been evaluated for geotextiles— not geomembranes, grids, etc. Therefore, the test method is designated for geotextiles, not geosynthetics, as all products may not lend themselves to this test method for abrasion. If later developments indicate a wider scope for this test method, appropriate changes will be made. The assembly should be two parallel, smooth plates, one of which makes a reciprocating motion. The speed of the reciprocating plate should be adjustable between 10 and 115 double strokes per minute. The stroke length should be 25 mm (1 in.). The second plate is rigidly supported by a double-lever assembly to provide free movement in a direction perpendicular to the reciprocating plate. This plate is stationary during the test and must be well balanced so that a vertical load can be maintained by means of dead weights. Both plates are equipped with clamps at each end to hold the test sample and the abrading medium. The clamps have gripping surfaces adequate to prevent slippage of the specimen or the abrading material during the test. The CBR test is used for determining the relative bearing ratio and expansion characteristics under surcharge weights of base, sub-base and sub grade soils for the design of roads, pavements and runways. Tests can be conducted on all types of soils including sand, gravel and washed stone (passing through 20 mm IS Sieve). MI.SO-1026 PORE PRESSURE: The pore pressure measuring apparatus consists of a screw pressure pump, null indicator in Perspex, pressure gauge, mercury manometer, volume change burette and the necessary connecting tubes and valves. It is used for measuring pore water pressure and pore air pressure in soils. It has many features, which simplify the operation. The Null Indicator is made from a transparent Perspex block. It is a simplified U-Tube Null Indicator, in which water can bypass mercury if null indicator is tilted; thus de-airing process by circulation of water is facilitated. All features enable a visual check to be made during the de-airing operation of apparatus. A mercury manometer and a pressure gauge of Bourdon Tube type are provided on the panel on which the whole equipment is mounted. MI.SO-1034 Static Cone Penetrometer Among the field sounding tests the static cone test is a valuable method of recording variation in the in situ penetration resistance of soils, in cases where the in situ density is disturbed by boring operations, thus making the standard penetration test unreliable especially under water. The results of the test are also useful in determining the bearing capacity of the soil at various depths below the ground level. In addition to bearing capacity values it is also possible to determine by this test the skin friction values used for the determination of the required lengths of piles in a given situation. The static cone test is most successful in soft o loose soils like silty sands, loose sands layered deposits of sands, silts and clays as well as in clayey deposits.

MI.SA-1012 Chaplin Abrasion Tester The BCA (Chaplin) Abrasion Tester gives a guide to the abrasion resistance of concrete floors. It can also be used to test the effectiveness of surface treatments used to protect or upgrade sub-standard floors. The depth of wear in the concrete floor brought about by the action of 75mm diameter by 20mm wide hardened steel wheels is used as a guide to the abrasion resistance. TILE TESTING INSTRUMENTS MI.TI-1001D Tile Abrasion Testing Machine The tile sample is pressed under a specified load against a grinding path, strewn evenly with an abrasive powder, revolving at the rate of 30 ± 1 rpm. At the end of 100 revolutions of the disc, the second parallel side of the tile is subjected to wear for an equal number of revolutions of the disc. The wear of the tile is measured using thickness-measuring device (which is supplied at extra cost). The abrasion-testing machine consists of a replaceable grinding path, fitted on to a disc rotating about its vertical axis. The rotating disc and the grinding path are enclosed by a circular tray. A bracket holds the specimen. The loading is by a counter-balanced lever. A funnel is provided to facilitate charging the grinding path with abrasive powder.
