Turner Senior Resource Center celebrates 20 years on Plymouth Road

Dr. Pearl Lee was among six speakers in an ongoing lecture series entitled Healthy Aging in Retirement as part of a collaboration between The Michigan Taiwanese American Organization (MITai) and Turn-er Senior Wellness Program. Future topics include How to Talk to Your Doctor and Advocate Within the Hospital System, Navigating Medicare and Medicaid, and Local Resources to Support Aging.

In August, the Turner African American Services Council (TAASC), a group committed to improv-ing education and health outcomes among underserved older adults in our community, held its annual Fun Day (photos below). Storytelling, line dancing, poetry, music, and multicultural foods brought people from many backgrounds together in a joyous way at the Turner Senior Resource Center.

Geriatric Center Community Programs Promote Learning and Fun Across Cultures

Twenty years ago, four community programs supporting older adults in the community found a home under one roof at the Turner Senior Resource Center (TSRC). Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), Silver Club Memory Programs, Turner Senior Wellness Program, and Housing Bureau for Seniors are all programs that began as services provided at the Turner Geriatric Clinic forty years ago. The anniversa-ry was marked with a week of special activities at TSRC culminating in a reception and toast to the next twenty years. Festivities included a greeting from TSRC founder, Ruth Campbell, and the announcement of a major gift to the Turner Senior Wellness Program. The Robert and Barbara Debrodt Endowment Fund was established to honor the memory of Bob Debrodt, retired UM attorney and longtime volunteer at TSRC, who died in early 2018. This discretionary fund will help the program continue in its mission to respond to community needs and implement new ideas that are often generated by participants.
