ANCC Eligibility Criteria for Certification

RNs need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Hold a current, active license within a state or territory of the United States or the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country

• Have practiced the equivalent of two years full-time as a registered nurse

• Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in gerontological nursing within the last three years

• Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in gerontological nursing within the last three years

Recertification Requirements (as of 2014)

• When: 5 years post certification

• Practice Hours: 1,000 hours in geriatrics over past 5 years

Recertification Requirements: Continuing Education

• Continuing Education: 150 hours (15 CEUs) over past 5 years– Average of 30 hours per year

– 50% of hours can be non-accredited, related to staff development at work, etc

– 50% of hours must be accredited by an approved organization (ANCC, many others)

– 51% must directly relate to geriatric nursing

– 49% may indirectly relate to geriatrics, geriatric roles
