The village of Germantown’s sixth tax incrementalfinance (TIF) district is drawing interest from businessesthat may want to locate in the area.

The TIF 6 is located in an area between MapleRoad, Appleton Avenue and Lannon Road. In a TIF dis-trict, taxes normally directed toward local units of gov-ernment are instead used to pay for improvements ininfrastructure. The local units of government later bene-fit from the development created as a result of theimprovements.

The Village Board approved the creation of the TIF

6 district in May 2014, with the Joint Review Board thatconsiders TIF requests approving the district a shorttime later.

However, while a business had committed to locat-ing a facility within the district, the business changedplans last fall.

The board was updated on the sixth TIF district June 1. Bar ry Chavin of Mooney LeSage Group saidthere are seven “prospects” for TIF 6, including onewhich has signed a “letter of intent.”

Chavin said there is a potential user that wants toconstruct a building between 80,000 to 100,000square feet He said the potential user would want tobreak ground this year and have occupancy in June or

July o f 2016.“It would have made my life a lot easier if we had

broken ground (in the TIF), but it wasn’t the prudent

Airgas has now transitioned all itsGermantown operations to its new facilityin the village's Industrial Park.

A ribbon cutting was held last Octoberfor the company's new 250,000 squarefoot facility at the southwest corner ofMequon Road and Enterprise Drive inGermantown. The new facility includesoffice space, a distribution center and is t henew home for the Airgas Total Access salesunit.

"Airgas has been a part of theGermantown community for more than 17years," Airgas President and ChiefExecutive Office Michael L. Molinini saidat the time. "We are very pleased to havefound a new location that allows our distri-bution center, Airgas Total Access team,and support offices to remain inGermantown, while expanding our capaci-ty to serve our customers and provide addi-tional jobs to the region. We look forwardto continuing our successful partnershipswith the residents, businesses and civicassociations of Greater Milwaukee formany years to come."

The company has had a facility inGermantown since 1996 and the newspace is double the size of its previous loca-tion. According to information from the com-pany, "the new distribution center is one ofsix that Airgas operates across the country.It will be used to stock and ship hardgoods, including welding equipment andsafety products, to Airgas customers andbranch locations throughout much of theMidwest."

Since the ribbon cutting, the interiorconstruction of the building is complete, asdistribution and offices spaces were fullyoperational by Dec. 14, according to infor-mation from a company spokesperson.Also, landscaping work at the site is cur-rently underway and will be completedlater this summer.

The spokesperson added that 15 newassociates have been hired at the newGermantown location and the companywill continue to add to the Germantownoperation as needed.

On May 27 during the GermantownCommunity Scholarship Fund (GCSF)Senior Scholarship awards night, a total of147 Germantown high school seniors wereawarded scholarships.

Of the total awards presented thatevening, 89 scholarships totaling more than$125,000 were GCSF scholarships award-ed as a direct result of the fundraisingefforts of the GCSF organization.

“This is the largest achievement in thehistory of GCSF. These scholarship dollarsrepresent the belief the community has inour youth,” said GCSF President DebStresing, “It also shows the commitment ofarea businesses, our valued sponsors, gen-

erous donors, and volunteers whose dedi-cated efforts have raised the scholarshipfunds we are proud to present tonight.”

Not only did the awards night recog-nize student achievements, but presenters ofthe 37 individual or company named schol-arships shared many of their stories.Memorial scholarships on behalf of PhilDatka, Wayne Baumgartner/IndustrialRecyclers, Wayne Heidel/Jennifer

ship directly supports the ability of GCSF tofundraise for the scholarships that wereawarded this year. Since 1981, over $2.3million has been awarded in scholarships to2,269 Germantown area students pursuinghigher education at colleges, universities or

vocational/technical schools. Thtrust fund was initiated in 1981 bytion from the Germantown Rotarythe amount of $10,000. t. Boniface's annual Math Fair adds to the end of the school year frenzy.Through fun and creative games, the first through seventh grade students test the math skills they learned throughout the year. It is just another way St.

Boniface infuses a little whimsy into serious education.

Clara Theine (aka Ms. T), St. Boniface's math specialist and vol-unteer extraordinaire, conducts the beloved Math Fair. Ms. Ttakes the time to visit each classroom, teaching the students allthey need to know before the main event. Her passion for math,the school, and the students shines through everything she

does. A parent, Joanna Grossi, perfectly sums up Ms. T by saying:" Ms. T is such ablessing to our school, not only because of the work she does but because of her bigheart. She has such a passion for learning, teaching students, and helping others."

The Math Fair is comprised of several games utilizing math concepts, ranging from

basic addition/subtraction problems to more challenging multiplication/divisionequations. Students are given two tickets per game, allowing everyone a chance toplay all the games in their skill level. The older studentsget in the act by leading the games. It is hard to tell

who is having more fun - the leaders or the players. TheMath Fair is always a rousing success and enjoyed by allinvolved, but if you ask a student what their favoritepart of the fair is – nine out of ten will tell you it's thepenny candy that can be won. That's a pretty sweet way to learn math!

Dear Dr. Winter, I have just been told I have 5 crowns withcavities under them. Two of these are part of bridges that areonly 1 year old. I floss diligently and brush twice a day. Whatcould cause cavities around bridges and crowns in such a shorttime.

Dear Ann, without seeing x-rays and doing an exam, I canonly tell you that the reasons for decay are as follows:1. Decay was left inside the tooth when the crowns wereplaced.

2. The crowns did not fit properly.3. You are missing areas with your floss and you may have ahigh sugar diet.4. A microscopic dental lab wasn’t used which resulted incement leaching out and leaving a gap between the tooth andcrown that became more easily decayed.

Let’s examine these one by one. Decay left in a tooth. Whenthe crown was done, the filling under the crown may have beenold and in need of replacement. If this decay was not found andremoved meticulously, this decay is like a time bomb that willcontinue to eat away tooth structure even with a newlycemented crown. The solution to this is to make sure the dentistused magnifying glasses and caries stain detectors to insurethere is no decay left inside the tooth. Then a new filling or coreshould be done prior to preparing the tooth for a new crown. Itis essential that a crown sit on clean, healthy tooth structure.

Next, the crowns did not fit properly. The type of lab adentist selects and their attention to detail will determine howtight the crown fits on the tooth. The dentist usually selectsdental labs based upon how much the patient’s insurance paysto make the crown. If insurance reimbursement is low, thedentist will select a less expensive lab. Conversely, if a patienthas high esthetic demands, the dentist may use a masterceramist to insure the crowns will look better, fit better and lastlonger.

Today many crowns are sent overseas to receive bigdiscounts. Your dentist should be able to show you a “made inthe USA” verification if they have chosen a laboratory in theUnited States that uses microscopes for crown fabrication.

The next reason a crown may fail may be from poor oralhygiene habits and a high sugar diet. The sipping of sugarsodas, fruit juices, sports drinks and the inability to remove thissugar with proper brushing and flossing can result in cavities in

a short time. We recommend water and milk anwater as great low sugar drinks! Have your hygieyou brush and floss to assess your techniques!

Lastly, gaps under your crowns will allow cemeout. While there will always be a micro-gap betweeand remaining tooth, the larger the gap, the more tcan leak out by being exposed to foods and salivAsk your dentist if they are using microscopic den

The Menomonee Falls girlssoccer team beat Arrowhead in ashootout June 11. The shootout winadvances Menomonee Falls to aDivision I sectional final againstHomestead at Brookfield Centralon June 13.

Menomonee Falls and

Arrowhead were tied 2-2 follow-ing overtime, leading to theshootout.

Menomonee Falls got on theboard first, as Alex Graeberscored on an assist from KylieSprecher at the fourth minute.Arrowhead evened the score 23minutes into the game and tookthe lead on a goal at the 66thminute.

Sprecher scored the equalizerfor Menomonee Falls at the 86thminute, sending the game intoovertime.

Germantown loses inregional final: A Germantown comebackagainst North Shore Conference rivalHomestead came up short June 6, as the

Warhawks lost a regional final to theHighlanders, 3-2.

Homestead's goals all came in the firsthalf. Germantown got on the board at the

64th minute as Mackenzie Challoner scoredoff a corner kick from Izzy Thompson.

Germantown continued to challenge

during the second half but didn't score its sec-ond goal until there was less than two min-utes remaining, as Challoner again scoredoff an assist by Thompson.

The first two innings of the WIAA statesoftball tournament were completed June 11before rain pushed all activity to the nextday.

DeForest and Germantown opened thefirst Division I quarterfinal game at the UW-Madison Goodman Diamond. In the top ofthe first inning, Germantown got the first twoouts before DeForest got on base with a

walk. However, DeForest pinch runner AlyOtteson was caught stealing second base forthe third out. Germantown then recorded

three outs in the bottom of the inning.DeForest then scored two runs in the top

of the second inning while holdingGermantown scoreless in the bottom of theinning.

In the top of the third inningGermantown recorded one out before playwas stopped by rain. The game was sched-uled to resume at 8:30 a.m. June 12. An

When 8-year-old Slinger residentChase Jacklin holds his lemonade stand June 14, he will not be raising money forhis piggybank, but rather for a muchgreater cause.

Chase is hosting an Alex’s LemonadeStand during Alex’s Lemonade Days(June 12-14) to raise funds and aware-ness for the fight against childhood can-cer. With his stand–which will offer bothlemonade and sno-cones for dona-tions–Chase hopes to continue Alex'sLemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF)founder Alex Scott’s mission to “findchildhood cancer cures, one cup oflemonade at a time.”

The ingoing third grader at AddisonElementary School learned about theopportunity from his mother, Brenda Jac kli n, who is an emp loye e ofNorthwestern Mutual. NorthwesternMutual supports and encouraged itsemployees to help the ALSF cause in oneof three ways–“stand up” (host lemon-ade stand); “suit up” (purchase a T-shirt);or “speed up” (participate in the corre-sponding run/walk held each year).

Chase is a huge fan of lemonadestands so the choice was a no-brainer,

said Brenda.“Chase loves to put on lemonadestands, so we thought this was a perfectfit,” she said. “He often hosts stands withhis friends and brothers (Marshall, 13,and Andrew, 11).”

Brenda said she and her husband,Bill, are quite pleased with their son’swillingness to help children in need.

“We are really proud of him to bewilling to do all this work for a greatcause,” she said.

The Germantown RecreationDepartment and GHS Band Director JamesBarnes are providing community instrumen-talists ranging from incoming high schoolfreshmen to adults an opportunity to cometogether, rehearse, and perform a varietyof music as part of the GermantownCommunity Band.

The season includes five rehearsals and

three “Concerts in the Park” performancesas well as five rehearsals in winter for theDecember holiday performance at GHS.

Members should have playing experi-ence with music at the high school level orshould be presently enrolled as a highschool band member. Any musician cancome and rehearse.Regular rehearsals willbe in the Germantown High School BandRoom 158 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on June 15,

22, 29; July 6, 13, 27,and Aug. 3.Performances will be on Wednesdayevenings at 7 p.m. on July 1, 15 and Aug.5 at Firemen’s Park and are open to thepublic (if rain the concert will be in the KMSGym).

The fee to join is $23/residents andschool district residents, $30/non-residents.New members need to purchase a per-

formance polo shirt for $25. Those interest-ed should register by June 8.
