MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Friends, Corbin is entering a very special season where we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary. I hope everyone can find a way to be a part of this celebration. There is so much history involved here and, since you only turn 50 once, as many can testify, why miss out on it! On August 25th from 3:00 to 5:00 Corbin will be hosting an open house for all members

past, present, and future. We will be serving wine, appetizers and more. It’s a chance to mix and mingle with our community partners and members who make Corbin happen every day. I know many members who were extremely active in years past, but due to health or other rea-sons, have not been as active lately. Please come by as you are part of this history as well. If you know of such a member, be sure to invite them. After that celebration, we will begin preparation for our auction. This is our cornerstone event and, it too, will be themed around our Golden Anniversary. We are still in great need of donat-ed auction items. If you are out shopping and find a gem, or perhaps looking through your house and want any items to go towards a good cause, we would love to have them. With that, the future continues to look bright for Corbin. As you know, Corbin has been able to receive some fantastic grants this year. These grants help us make many of the upgrades you see around you. These are improvements we would not have been able to make on our own. And it gets better. This fall we will receive the grant funding that will enable us to replace the carpet in the entire building! In addition, this same grant will allow us to add an outside security camera system to make our parking lot safer and re-design the Lincoln Street door. Hard to believe it’s been a year since I started here at Corbin, but I’ll tell you that I absolutely love it. Who knows, if you’ll have me, I might even be here for our 100th anniversary! Enjoy your month and be sure to take advantage of the great opportunities and travel we have here at Corbin this season.

This Holiday Is For You! September 4th is Labor Day and the Corbin office will be closed. Thought of as the “end of Summer” in other places, here in Spokane summer goes deep into the fall. Dedicated in honor of the worker, it is also appropriately called the "workingman's holiday". The holiday is dedicat-ed to you in respect and appreciation for the work you do in or outside of the home, union or non-union, big company, small company, self employed or government. As long as you work somewhere, at something, this holiday is for you!

Stop the Itch! Tis the season for annoying bug bites, but a sur-prisingly simple remedy exists that can eliminate all of the itch within minutes. All you have to do is heat up a metal spoon under hot tap water for a minute or so, then press it directly against the bite. Hold it tight against your skin for a couple of minutes, and when you take it off, the itch should be gone for good. When mosquitoes bite you, they inject proteins under your skin to keep your blood from clotting. It's this protein that causes you to itch, but it can't survive at the moderate-ly high temperatures a hot spoon can create. The bump might linger for a few days, but the uncomfortable itching should be gone for good!

Skin Cancer Thursday, August 17—10:00-11:00 (UN) Presenter: Gerald Ray -Corbin Member What does your shadow have to do with skin cancer? If you are not casting a shad-ow, you need protection. The hours of 10—2 or 3 are the most dangerous. Clouds do not protect your skin! SPF 30 sunscreen or higher is recommended. Most T-shirts or blouses do not give full protection. One bad sun burn can be the start of a Melanoma, that will take a few years to develop. Children's skin is more apt to be damaged! Cancers can be found on parts of the body that are not directly exposed to the sun. Skin cancer is some-thing our parents and grandparents didn’t think about, because primary care doctors advised us to go out and get some vitamin D. WW2 changed dress codes drastically. Healthy tan and a lack of modesty encour-aged sum lamps and tanning booths. There are handouts for this seminar, please bring something to write with.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

August 24-27 24 hours a day

FREE to the public

KSPS Public TV is hosting The Wall That Heals, a 250-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, along with a mobile Education Center at Mirabeau Point Park in Spokane Valley. Corbin is taking a van on Aug 24, see page 4 for details.

My First Tour by Kate Robbins When I first joined Corbin, I knew I wanted to serve as a volunteer, so when my friend Vi Martin talked about driving for tours, I jumped in to get approved by Kermit Shaull. After driving for a couple of months, I asked Beth Daniels how to become a tour leader. Beth & the tour team are fun to work with, & after driving to Kamiak Butte with Dan Conlon I knew it was my next goal! For my first tour I did a lot of re-search & also challenged myself to think about what I love to do! Ken-dall Yards is one of my favorite plac-es in Spokane, so I explored and spoke with the sales & rental offices, business owners, restaurant staff, and read about the history & devel-opment. I worked on a date and proposed tour specifics with Beth, and the Kendall Yards property manager, got approval with Beth and a blurb in the Corbin newsletter. I contacted each of the businesses on the route, and wrote up a small flyer for participants. I was pleasantly surprised that my first tour was sold out! Corbin members enjoy exploring! We stopped at the Kendall Yards Wel-come Center where Cat Carrel, Sales Manager, hopped on the van and gave us a guided tour through the property. We enjoyed our various tours of the businesses! If you decide to become a tour leader or driver, my advice is to learn from those who have been doing this for many years & from Beth, plan & drive for tours that sound interesting to you, connect and have fun! If you are interested in volunteering

as a tour leader or driver, call Beth Daniels at 327-1584.

Safety Concerns

If you drive a car that doesn’t have automatic locking doors, be sure to lock all of the doors while driving. It’s easy for some-one to open your door while you are at a stop sign or light. Ladies, if you have a purse in the passenger seat, and stop for gas, be sure the passenger door is locked to avoid theft.

Picnic At Mission Park

A special thank you to the Academy and Gemini Signs for a lovely afternoon at Mission park. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect setting. The weather was just right, with a light breeze that kept everyone very comfortable. Hamburgers and hot dogs were served along with potato salad and cup cakes. There were about 100 people in attendance. Ron Criscione sang and played guitar. His repertoire was unbelievable ranging from, the Beatles, Hank Williams and Ricky Nelson of the Mamas and the Papas. The crowd was tapping their toes and singing along. After providing the food and flipping all of those burgers and hot dogs, Gemini Signs awarded Corbin with a very gener-ous check. Thanks again for a lovely afternoon.

Four Birthdays were celebrated at the July 7 birthday potluck. Pictured are Waunita Fischback, Jeff Edwards, Vala-rie Harper and Caryl Ann Herman. Val-arie was the lucky winner of the $20.00 gift certificate donated by The Academy Retirement Community.

On Monday, July 10th, we had a visit from a long time Corbin member, Geri Fait. Geri stopped by to drop off donations for the October 7th auction. Geri became a member in 1999. She quickly be-came a tour guide and made several trips with Corbin members including: Africa, Italy, Holland,

France and Egypt. Geri enjoyed the people, travel and making new friends. While on tour, she enjoyed the stories of trips members had taken. Those stories gave her ideas of where to go next. While no longer a tour guide, Geri is still a member. She spends her time volunteering with SCRAPS, Women’s & Children's Kitchen and Union Gospel Mission. We hope to see Geri at our August 25th open house.

The Other Side of Corbin

Over the next couple of month I want to share with you why everyone should be proud to be a member of Corbin Senior. The Other Side Of Corbin series is to in-form everyone that Corbin is not just a place to “play cards”. Below is a article written by Skil’Kin about how our membership has embraced 3 new Corbin mem-bers and enhanced their lives. I truly believe we are the best Senior Community Center in Spokane. Heide Wehr , Assistant Director

The Corbin Center: A Place for Everyone

The Corbin Senior Activity Center is more than just a senior center – it is a com-munity center that has a place, and an activity, for everyone. Corbin offers dance nights, walking groups, potlucks, book clubs, quilting groups, darts, pool, semi-nars, computer and technology assistance, Wii bowling, and community-college-sponsored writing workshops, yoga classes, and art classes. As Heide Wehr, Assis-tant Director at the Corbin Center, explains, “Corbin has something to offer every-one. We want to drop the stigma of what people think of as a senior community center because we are so much more – this isn’t just a place for Mom and Dad to play cards. We do a lot of different things.” While the focus and mission of Corbin centers on serving senior populations, there is no age requirement for partici-pating, and all members of the community can gain something from Corbin. It is apparent that Corbin aims to foster connections with members of the com-munity, and perhaps nowhere is this engagement more evident than in the way Corbin has impacted the lives of several members of Skils’Kin’s Community Access program. Skils’Kin’s Community Access program helps adults with developmental disabili-ties engage with the community by facilitating opportunities to participate in ac-tivities, join groups and clubs, and volunteer. Three individuals from Skils’Kin’s Community Access program, Mary Ellen, Patricia, and Jack, came to Corbin seek-ing opportunities to build relationships and engage with the community. Thanks

to the inclusive and accommodating culture at Corbin, these three individuals have been able to find just that.

Mary Ellen (to right) came to the Corbin Senior Center to check out the Wii bowling league. What Mary Ellen found was not only an opportunity to join a bowling league she can participate in unhindered, but she built new relationships and found new friends as well. Mary Ellen actively competes alongside and with her Corbin teammates. Furthermore, Mary Ellen has indicated how the inclusiveness she feels amongst her bowling team is commonplace among Corbin members, stating how all its mem-bers are always so friendly and accepting.

Patricia (on right) also came to Corbin to engage with the com-munity and participate in Corbin activities. While participating in the stretch and tone classes at Corbin, Patricia has been able to build meaningful relationships. She enjoys the class greatly and also enjoys interacting with the other Corbin members.

Another Skils’kin Community Access partici-pant, Jack (to left), has also greatly benefitted from the inclusivity and range of activities that Corbin offers. During his time at Corbin, Jack has become close friends with Les, another member of the Corbin community. Jack and Les play darts and pool together, and Les even helps Jack write letters to his family. Corbin is a prime example of how a welcoming culture creates opportunities for meaningful community engagement for every-

one. By facilitating opportunities to engage, Corbin has created a space that has helped Mary Ellen, Patricia, Jack – as well as many others – thrive within the com-munity. Skils’Kin
