Our Mission: Columbia/Barnard Hillel The Kraft Center for Jewish Student LifeColumbia/Barnard Hillel is guided by a vision and a set of core values that have emerged over the years
of our history. Columbia/Barnard Hillel is the catalyst for students to explore and consciously define
their Jewish identity. Our quest is to help students, regardless of their origin or destination, find their own
interpretation of Jewish values, culture, community, and religion by empowering them to explore, learn,
and grow intellectually, spiritually, and socially. By encouraging exploration in warm and accepting
environments, we invite self-reflection and open dialogue so every student can discover their own path to
integrate being Jewish into their life choices and expressions. While our mission is constant, our methods are
defined only by the limits of our community’s imagination. We create experiences and communities focused
on social, cultural, and educational programs, social action, Israel, and religious life. We draw upon the
rigorous and intellectually exciting environment of Columbia University, Barnard College, and New York
City. In a world of abounding choices, we offer a captivating array of opportunities which engage students
in all things Jewish – fun and thoughtful – opening the door to transformational experiences. We are
passionately committed to enabling our students to meaningfully contribute to the local and global Jewish
community, Barnard College, Columbia University, and the world-at-large.
Columbia/Barnard Hillel is committed to a pluralistic vision of Judaism.
We promote Jewish life at Columbia, Barnard, and beyond, through broad programming
and a commitment to building a diverse Jewish community.
We provide a strong community that enriches the lives of our Jewish students and Columbia
and Barnard as a whole, and that enables members of these communities to come
together in a welcoming atmosphere.
We prepare Jewish students to be active and responsible members of the larger community
and prepare them to be active and engaged members of the Jewish community after they
graduate from Columbia and Barnard.
We provide a nurturing environment for Jewish students to grow religiously, spiritually,
socially, culturally, and ethically, as well as in a love for Israel and, in community with other
Jews, with respect for other faiths and a broad understanding of what it means to be Jewish.
The Gershom Mendes Seixas AwardThe Gershom Mendes Seixas Award is bestowed by Columbia/Barnard Hillel on those who have made outstanding contributions to Jewish Life at Columbia University and Barnard College.
Gershom Mendes Seixas, the first American-born Rabbi, American revolutionary patriot, and Jewish
Trustee of Columbia College, was born in 1746. His father was a Portuguese Marrano who had returned
to openly practicing Judaism, and his mother was the daughter of Moses Levy, a leader of early New York
Jewry. Although there was no rabbinical seminary anywhere in the American colonies, the young Gershom
undertook the study of Hebrew texts and, at age 23, became the spiritual leader of Congregation Shearith
Israel, the oldest synagogue in North America.
Seixas was one of the incorporators of Columbia College and served as a trustee for over 30 years. He
wrote the Hebrew oration that Sampson Simson, the first Jewish graduate of the university, delivered at
commencement exercises in 1800. In tribute to Seixas’ commitment, Columbia University issued a bronze
medal with his portrait, a replica of which has been made into the Seixas Award.
A committed patriot, Seixas refused a British order that his congregation pray for King George III. When the
British captured the city, he chose to close his synagogue and leave New York rather than give allegiance to
the King. He took the community’s Torah scrolls and prayer books to Philadelphia, where he served as the
first head of Congregation Mikveh Israel.
After the Revolution, Seixas returned to New York and participated in George Washington’s presidential
inauguration. He was the first religious leader of any faith to preach a Thanksgiving sermon. Copies of
his speech were printed in the thousands, with all proceeds benefiting the widows and orphans of the
Revolutionary War.
Gershom Mendes Seixas died in 1816 at the age of 70, a renowned leader who had promoted the
intellectual growth of his city, the nation, and Columbia. The plaque in his memory at Shearith Israel is
inscribed to the “patriot Rabbi of the American revolution.”

Student SpotlightsEmma Barnett, BC ’19On my first Shabbat on campus, I went to a Kraft Shabbat Dinner, and was comforted by being surrounded by such a massive Jewish community. Since then, Hillel has deepened my appreciation for Judaism and has given me the opportunity
to share my culture and customs with my non-Jewish friends on campus...
...I have been fortunate to connect with my roots through Hillel’s Birthright trip and a leadership trip to Israel focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hillel has provided a space to constantly think about and challenge my beliefs while hearing a variety of perspectives and opinions from others.
Michael Berkson, SEAS ’17I grew up in the Reform movement and imagined myself becoming part of that community. As soon as I arrived at Columbia, I quickly became close with students of all Jewish backgrounds. The Kraft Center provided a space for me to learn about
how others practice Judaism and to share my Jewish identity with my peers...
...My very first Shabbat during first-year orientation, I watched a performance of Pizmon, Columbia/Barnard’s co-ed Jewish a cappella group. I was immediately taken by their musicality and spirituality, but was unsure if I should audition. Four years later, I’m finishing up my college experience as Music Director of Pizmon, a group that has taken me around the world with who are now twelve of my closest friends, and without whom I would not be the person or the Jew I am today.
Rachel Blumenthal, CC ’17Coming out of a Jewish high school, I was looking to further both my academic and Jewish learning. At Hillel, I have been able to integrate my Jewish learning with my daily life. The Kraft Center provided me a myriad of learning opportunities –from
participating in nightly learning in the Beit Midrash, or attending weekly “Judaism and the Core” sessions.
Student SpotlightsJulia Crain, BC ’18Coming from a town with a very small Jewish community, the Kraft Center’s seemingly endless opportunities for Jewish engagement (various denominational services, Shabbat meals, social events, and Israel advocacy) really excited me. From going to
Israel for the first time on Birthright Israel and becoming friends with Jews of all backgrounds, to celebrating High Holidays and endless Shabbatot, Hillel has provided me countless opportunities to grow Jewishly...
...The professionals at the Kraft Center have supported me in all levels of my Jewish engagement. They have guided me in my Jewish learning, made me feel at home in the building, and encouraged me to find new ways to explore my Jewish identity. I am so grateful for my connections with them.
Dore Feith, CC ’18 The Kraft Center has provided me the opportunity to learn how to work professionally with both my peers and full-time staff members. Hillel’s professionals have given my student group, Aryeh, the resources to host exciting and interesting Israel
programming at Columbia.
Sami Frankel, CC ’19I went on an alternative spring break trip to Israel this past spring with Hillel, and it had such a tremendous impact on my life. I came back to campus feeling so refreshed and confident, with more perspective and a renewed dedication to Judaism, Israel, and
Hillel that I have carried through the rest of the semester and intend to continue into the summer, next year, and beyond Hillel.
Jordana Fremed, CC ’17I’ve learned that Judaism comes in many forms. Being Jewish can mean so many different things to students who come to the Kraft Center. During my time here, I have loved learning about how others express their Judaism in ways that differ from my own!
Student SpotlightsMarc Hersch, GS/JTS ’18The rabbinical team at the Kraft Center has taught me how to lead a community with skill and consideration, tools that have helped me become a better leader. The Campus Rabbi and the clergy interns have supported me tremendously, guided me
along the way, and inspired me to learn more...
...I am so grateful to the Kraft Center for providing me with two meaningful experiences in Israel. I would not have had the chance to tour Israel and think critically about it if it were not for the resources and communities that the Kraft Center provides.
Anna Kalm, BC ’19If I hadn’t gotten involved with the Columbia/ Barnard Hillel community, I probably would have transferred to another school. I feel so lucky to have found my space on campus here at the Kraft Center...
...Hillel manages to have professionals who both provide excellent Jewish life and growth opportunities, and a level of care and support I have not found elsewhere on campus.
Emily London, BC ’17Kesher, the Reform Jewish student group on campus, has been my rock throughout my college experience. I immediately found it to be such a warm, inviting community where I made many friends, and began to find a home at the Kraft Center.
Student SpotlightsLeeza Hirt, CC ’18In some ways my Jewish life in college is a continuation of everything I had experienced until this point. But in other ways, my Jewish life in college, fostered by the Kraft Center, is unlike anything I have experienced before. Through the Kraft
Center, I have come to learn about, appreciate, and experience so many other expressions of Judaism with students from backgrounds very different from my own. This has enriched my Jewish life and identity in ways I never anticipated...
...In addition to finding my place in Hillel’s religious communities, I have also found a home in Hillel’s Israel-related groups, specifically in Aryeh: Columbia Students Association for Israel. The work I have done with Aryeh has been some of the most meaningful work I’ve done during my time at Columbia.
Ayelet Jacobson, BC ’19After my first semester freshman year, I was hooked. Everyone I met at Hillel was warm and welcoming. At first, my relationship with Hillel consisted of Friday night services, but soon developed into much more. Hillel has taught me how to stand up
for what I care about and has enabled me to put myself out my comfort zone...
...On the holiday of Simchat Torah this past fall, I finally felt completely at home within the Jewish community at Columbia. Every year, hundreds of Jewish students walk from the Kraft Center to Low steps, where we join together to dance and celebrate the holiday. I found that being with our Jewish community at the center of our greater university community was something very special that I did not want to take for granted. It was an experience that made me feel like I belonged.
Aaron Liberman, CC ’19While I remain engaged in Jewish Orthodoxy, I have also been lucky enough to become involved in groups and communities that I had not originally planned to associate with. The Kraft Center—constantly abuzz with the myriad of religious and
social groups that call it their home—proved to be the perfect place to explore new interests and engage with people with whom I otherwise would not have interacted.
Student SpotlightsNathan Rosin, CC’18The Hillel community here is special in that it brings surprisingly disparate parts and diverse identities together into a complex and cohesive Jewish experience. As a student leader in the greater Columbia community, I take inspiration from
Hillel’s unparalleled success of dually embracing individual experiences and building tight-knit community. As I approach the formidable task of continuing to build a strong and connected community at Columbia, I look to Columbia/Barnard Hillel as a guide.
Noa Shapiro, BC ’19I never expected to find such a warm community that welcomed me in the way that the Kraft Center did. Upperclassmen reached out to me beginning on my first day on campus, and Hillel professionals encouraged me to take on leadership roles
throughout my time here.
Ilana Solomon, BC ’19Going on Birthright Israel with Hillel connected me with students who were Jewish, but not necessarily involved in any sort of Jewish organization or community. It does not have to be an organized event, but more just finding people I enjoy
spending time with.

This April 2017, alumni, students, staff, leadership, and community members gathered together to usher in this beautiful Torah. It was a meaningful and joyful day that began with the carrying of the Torah from Earl Hall – where Jewish life was previously centered – to the Kraft Center, the beautiful
home that has housed and allowed Jewish life to grow and flourish over the past several years.
This Torah will allow the Kraft Center to continue to enhance Jewish life at Columbia University.
