Introduction

1 Introduction

GestureFX is a family of interactive systems created by GestureTek. The GestureFX Tracker allowsusers to interact with the GestureTek Dazzler player through a special interface called the GestureTekControl Panel. The basic package is intended for use with one camera and one projector. If yourequire more than one of either, you will need the Platinum MP edition.

Any number of GestureFX systems can be linked to a central location using the GestureTek NetworkPackage (sold separately). An administrator can upload content from the GestureFX system to theGestureTek server and then, from the server, can download that content to any or all of the GestureFXsystems in his/her network. User metrics and system information are also sent to the server andstored there to be accessed when required. The System Monitor agent is installed with GestureFX andserves as the client side of the System Monitor service, running in the background to handleidentification of the screen to the System Monitor server and facilitating the transfer of data. For moreinformation on the GestureTek Network Package, contact your sales representative.

This User Guide will help you in setting up and using the GestureFX Tracker. It is organized by topicand covers the following material:

4.2.3 To adjust cameras

There are two methods of camera control available, Software Controlled and Manual.

§ Software Controlled (default setting) - In most cases, this method will effectively control thecamera settings. It is also very useful in environments where lighting changes. However, whenusing this method with a DirectShow camera, the camera image may appear black. Use the Manual method instead.

§ Manual - This method should only be used in controlled environments that are not susceptible tolighting changes. Great care should be taken when adjusting the controls using this method.

Selecting the Show All Controls checkbox reveals all possible controls. However, not all listedcontrols are applicable to all cameras.

1. Refer to the camera manual for instructions on adjusting the camera settings.

2. Repeat for each of the cameras.

3. Click OK to return to the Verify Camera dialog box and return to Step 4 of the previous topic, To setup cameras. 46

4.3 Screen Alignment

When running GestureFX, the camera does not actually see what is projected. It only sees thereflection of infrared light within the presentation area.

Make sure that the camera is aligned exactly according to your screen dimensions as projected onyour presentation area.

Aligning the dimensions of what the camera sees with what is projected on the presentation area isdependant upon the correct placement of the camera and projector in relation to the presentation area. Before adjusting screen orientation and alignment, make sure that the camera, projector, andpresentation area are aligned as much as possible. Only then should alignment be adjusted withinTracker setup.

The three alignment procedure options are:

§ Manual - This option allows you to manually set the exact dimensions of the presentation area(screen). This is especially good for non-standard dimensions and to fine tune an existingalignment.

§ Screen Borders - This is the most automated option and should only be used for well-definedpresentation areas (screens) that are surrounded by a dark, rectangular border in distinct contrastto the presentation area.

§ Target Placement - This option sets the screen alignment by placing targets at specific points ofthe presentation area (screen). It is preferred for most standard dimensions that do not have awell-defined border.

Your choice of alignment procedure depends on your environment and personal preferences. ScreenBorders is the easiest to use, but has the strictest requirements.

The following options are available:

§ Accept - Saves alignment according to screen adjustments. Automatically takes you to the nextscreen.

§ Cancel - Cancels the Manual alignment screen. Provides options to go back to previous settingsor cancel setup altogether.

§ Revert - If you make alignment changes, selecting "Revert" resets the alignment to its previouslysaved state prior to these latest changes.

§ Defaults - Resets the alignment to its default state. Cancels all changes from current or anyprevious sessions.

§ Align - Lists choices of screen regions to align.

When Middle-Center is selected, an X appears in the very center of the screen instead of anarrow, to indicate the active adjustment area.

Instead of using the menu to access the various screen regions, you can use your numerickeypad with numbers 1 - 9 representing each of the 9 regions (e.g. 1 is the bottom-left corner, 5 isthe middle-center, 9 is the top-right corner).

§ Flip Horizontal - Flips the screen image horizontally (left to right).

§ Flip Vertical - Flips the image vertically (up and down).

§ Display Window (multiple cameras only) - When using multiple cameras, select the portion ofthe overall display that corresponds to the current camera.

§ Advanced - Opens the Camera Controls screen. For more information, see Advanced Options -Camera Controls. 97

Advanced Options are available to assist you with target placement and to allow you to make surethat the Tracker is tracking motion as expected.

5.1 Target Placement

The following five Advanced Options help locate targets during the Target Placement alignmentprocess. They are available through the Advanced button in the Target Placement screens.

There may be one or more reasons why the red crosshairs are not locating your target.

If you have confirmed that your environment has been satisfactorily optimized, and the Tracker is stillhaving difficulty locating your target, use these advanced options.

If after working with these options, the Tracker is still not locating your target, try using the ManualAlignment procedure instead.

When using multiple cameras, certain Advanced Options will include separate tabs for eachcamera.

5.3.2 To adjust software-controlled method

1. From the Advanced Options screen, select Control.

The Software Controlled method provides additional controls that may be adjusted to affectcamera brightness and sensitivity. In most cases the default values provide best results. Do notadjust unless truly necessary.

The Control tab contains the following panes:

Histogram

Displays a dynamic histogram of the current camera image.

Status

Displays a status message regarding the brightness of the camera image. If the image is too darkor too bright, the Tracker will attempt to automatically adjust. If adjustment is unsuccessful, amessage appears explaining why. For best results, the message should read "Everything OK"before continuing Tracker set up.

2. Using the Percentiles slider, adjust the brightness percentage threshold for the camera image.

The Tracker will attempt to adjust overall brightness of the image to ensure that the specifiedpercentage of pixels remains below the target brightness. In most cases the default percentile ofabout 75% is preferred.

3. Adjust the Target Brightness slider to set the brightness level.

The green line indicates the current brightness of the camera image. The target brightnessshould be set fairly high, yet low enough to tolerate reasonably brighter objects. In most cases thedefault target brightness of about 53% is preferred.

Advanced Options

The two sliders set the minimum and maximum brightness levels. The Tracker will adjust thecamera's gain and exposure to attempt to keep the target brightness at a level between the twosliders. If the brightness indicator moves outside the specified range, the Tracker will adjust the gainand exposure.

Setting a too narrow (20% or less) or too wide (35% or more) a range will likely produceundesired results. In most cases the default range of 30% is preferred.

4. Adjust the Gain slider (the name of this slider may differ depending on your camera) to set therange of the camera's gain.

The green bar represents the current gain. The two sliders set limits on the range of thecamera's gain that the Tracker will use. In most cases leaving the sliders in their default positionsprovides best results. Some cameras allow for low or high gain settings that are undesirable, inwhich cases the sliders should be adjusted accordingly.

5. Alt Gain - Deprecated control. Will be removed in later version. (ASK EVAN)

6. Adjust the Shutter/Exposure sliders (depending on your camera, you may have only have one ofthese sliders and the name of the slider(s) may vary) to set the range of the camera's exposure.

7. The last two controls are camera specific and control shutter and exposure in various waysdepending on the camera. The first of the two allow for the limiting of the setting range similar to Gain above. The extra middle slider button allows for a initial maximum exposure setting. This is sothat the Tracker will increase exposure to that level before increasing gain. When gain reaches itsmaximum limit, then exposure will increase again if necessary. The second of the two controlsallows for a minimum setting.

8. When you are satisfied with these settings, click another tab to view or adjust, or click OK to closeAdvanced Options.

104

Appendix A - Multiple Cameras

Multiple projectors can be set up side by side in sequence or in a grid. Each camera should be alignedto view its associated projected area as closely as possible. Fine alignment changes can be made inthe Tracker setup.

There is also a special, rarely-used configuration available whereby a single tracking computer can beused to simultaneously track two separate projection areas. One of these projection areas must havetwo or three aligned cameras, while the other projection area must only have a single camera.

Working through the Setup and Advanced Options screens for multiple cameras is very similar tothat of using only one camera. You will choose one Camera Type , one Tracking Mode , and oneAlignment Procedure for all cameras.

Differences from single camera setup are as follows:

· A special screen for setting up the order of the cameras.

· Multiple displays or tabs for each camera where appropriate.

· Where a particular screen relates to only one camera, you will be presented with either amessage stating which camera will be affected or a choice of camera to affect.
