3Get Healthy, Get Smart! Contest Rule Book | Overview

I. Overview

A. ThemeThis semester’s theme is:

“Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise.”

During the contest your class will be earning valuable milestone points and competing for prizes—all while learning how to make healthy decisions grounded in personal and social re-sponsibility.

During Parts II and III of the contest, your stu-dents may prepare their entries using a topic that addresses any aspect of the theme. Regardless of the topic chosen, their presentation of their re-search and conclusions must clearly relate to the contest’s theme. Remember, the goal is for the students to educate themselves and to take the lead in their community by sharing important information about HIV and AIDS.

B. Parts I, II and IIIThe contest is divided into three parts to allow students an opportunity to analyze the issues and work towards solutions. Part I addresses HIV and AIDS awareness by identifying the methods of contraction, symptoms of infection and prevention tactics. During Part II, students will be using what they have learned to develop a powerful message, in a variety of mediums, that promotes HIV and AIDS awareness. Finally, during Part III, the contest will culminate in a week-long outreach strategy, designed to edu-cate fellow classmates on the issues during World AIDS Week.

C. Contest CategoriesIn total, there are nine (9) categories separated into three (3) parts. To increase your chances of winning, we recommend that you participate in all nine categories.

II. Rules for All Categories

A. General Rules For All CategoriesRule 1: Annual ThemeYour entry must be clearly related to the annual theme and show your topic’s significance to the prevention of HIV.

Rule 2: Contest ParticipationPart I requires 100% participation to earn points. During Parts II and III, your class may submit one project per category. It is in your dis-cretion whether you have participants work in groups or work alone. However, as a timesaver we recommend students work in groups during Parts II and III, with each group working in a separate category.

Note: If multiple parties in your class want to work in the Lyrics category, you may allow them to do so individually, however, your class must decide which song will be used for your official class entry.

Rule 3: Individual or Group EntriesThe Quiz and Vocabulary Puzzle submissions must be the work of only one student. A group project, such as the Poster, Bulletin Board, Skit, Lyrics, PSA, Outreach Booth or Peer-to-Peer Workshop, must be the work of 2 to 5 students. All students in a group entry must be involved in the research and interpretation of the group’s topic. We recommend you have students sign-up for a category based on their interests. We have enclosed a sign-up sheet for your use in the ac-companying Contest Materials.

Rule 4: Construction of EntryStudents are responsible for the research, design, and creation of their entries. They may receive help and advice from teachers and parents on the mechanical aspects of creating their entry:

1. Students may have help typing their paper and other written materials.

2. Students may seek guidance from their teach-ers as they research and analyze their mate-rial, but their conclusions must be their own.

Note: Students should not share research with other students unless they are members of the same group and creating one entry together. It is not acceptable to have a common pool of research from which several entries are created.

B. Required Written Material For All EntriesRule 5: Cover PageA Cover Page is required for each entry. A sample is enclosed in the Contest Materials, please repro-duce this cover page as many times as needed. The cover page must include:

• Title• School’s Name• Teacher’s Name• Classroom Number• Category (e.g. Quiz, Vocabulary Puzzle,

Poster, Bulletin Board, Skit or Lyrics, PSA, Outreach Booth, Peer-To-Peer Workshop)

• Brief Description of Your Project

III. Individual Category Rules

As described in the Overview ( page 3), milestones are separated into three categories: Awareness, Leadership/Advocacy, and Outreach. Each milestone will require a creative approach to ex-tend the learning beyond the module. Because YLA’s STD and AIDS Awareness curriculum lays the foundation for the completion of the milestones, we have suggested YLA activities that comple-ment each category. Use these suggestions to help guide students in their work. Below is a complete overview of the milestones:

Part I. Awareness

We also recommend using www.puzzlemaker.com to create your unique puzzles, however, you are free to use other methods. At the end of the activity, students should exchange their work with a classmate and solve each oth-er’s crossword puzzle.

Please be aware that your students’ artwork will be used in conjunction with text, and may be later utilized in any number of promotional lay-outs (brochure, postcards, etc.).

Students should draw from their own commu-nity’s experiences when preparing their skits. In addition, the Skits must adhere to the following criteria:

H. Outreach BoothGroup only (3–5 students)Beginning on World AIDS Day, and continuing throughout the week, representatives of your class should operate a HIV and AIDS Awareness Booth during lunch periods at your school. The purpose of the booth will be to convey preven-tion messages and promote better understand-ing of individual risk. Students should consider using the posters and other work generated by their classmates to decorate the booth. In addi-tion, they should collect AIDS awareness pledges (found in the Contest Materials) from students, and distribute buttons and ribbons.

I. Peer-to-Peer WorkshopsGroup only (3–5 students)In this final milestone activity, your class is asked to lead a HIV and AIDS Peer-to-Peer Workshop. The goal is for your students to facilitate an in-teractive session that focuses on values, decision-making, communication, and HIV prevention skills. This milestone activity requires the teacher to organize the panel of students in your class-room, and invite a class currently not enrolled in the program to attend your workshop.

Submission deadline: December 5, 2008Suggested activities: We Got Game: Fear Factor, We Got Game Science Experiment

IV. How Will Your Entry Be Judged?

A. How Does the Evaluation Process Work?Part I Awareness:Points will be awarded for classes that achieve 100% participation.

Part II. Leadership/AdvocacyAll entries will receive 10 participation points and be eligible for prizes. Prizes will be announced beginning November 1, 2008. Entries submitted in Part II will be evaluated by a panel of judge using the evaluation criteria as outlined below:

Prevention (60%)The most important aspect of your students’ entries is the ability to promote HIV and AIDS awareness and prevention. Students should ask themselves the following questions to help them focus on their analysis:

• Does my entry provide analysis and interpretation?

• Does my entry demonstrate an understanding of the issues?

• Does my entry demonstrate a balanced presentation of materials?

• Have I used reliable sources to support my conclusions?

Relation to Theme (20%)Entries must clearly explain the relation of their topic to the Get Healthy, Get Smart! theme. Stu-dents should ask themselves the following ques-tions to help focus their topic on the theme and its significance:• How does my topic relate to the theme?• Why is my topic important?• How is my topic significant to the prevention

of HIV?

Clarity of Presentation (20%)Entries must be presented in an effective man-ner. Students should ask themselves the follow-ing questions to help them focus on their pre-sentation:• Is my entry original, creative, and imaginative

in subject and presentation?• Is my written material clear, grammatically

correct and accurately spelled?

• Is my entry well-organized?• Is the visual material, and/or message

I present clear?

Part III. OutreachWorld AIDS Day is December 1, 2008. Begin-ning on this date, classes will be required to implement all Outreach milestones during this week. Points will be awarded for classes that achieve 100% participation.

B. Consensus JudgingJudges will not assign a numerical score to each entry; rather, they will rank the entries in their category. Judges are required to consult with each other in determining individual rankings. Judges are allowed to review the results of their category upon completion of the judging to as-sure accuracy in the evaluation process. As a final step, the judges will assign each entry an overall rating.

Remember: Judges must evaluate certain aspects of your students’ entries that are objective (e.g., were sources used; is the written material gram-matically correct and accurately spelled). But judges must also evaluate interpretive aspects which are qualitative in nature, such as: Creativ-ity and Originality, Theme, Composition, and Presentation of Information.
