Lee ValleyRegional ParkFirst for Angling

Hi and welcome to the Seventh and latest edition of “GET HOOKED”the angling guide book from the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority(LVRPA).

The LVRPA currently manage 27 Gravel Pits and 21 stretches ofRiver/Flood Channel which facilitate coarse fishing comprising of 29venues; 14 of which are directly managed by the Fisheries Department,14 are Licenced to Angling clubs, Societies and Consortia and one isjointly managed, (please see club details on pages 28 and 29).

Our website visitleevalley.org.uk/angling encourages you to uploadyour own photographs (subject to approval), as well as keeping you up todate with news stories, catch reports and vital information such as waitinglists and permit availability, so always click on our ‘News’ and ‘WaitingLists’ pages for updates. The gallery section includes archive photos andfeatures some of our well known characters such as ‘16.11’ at over 42lbfrom Nazeing Meads and ‘Beaky’, ‘Single Scale’ and ‘Tyson’ all over 40lbfrom the North Met Pit. So don’t be shy in coming forward; as well asadding your photographs to the website please send in any interestingcatch reports as we would be very keen to feature them on our website.

Our re-stocking programme continues to reward us for our effortswhereby some of our fish stocked in 2006/07 have now reached over31lb. The great news is all of our Carp appear to be very fast growing inevery water we’ve introduced them to so far! After a complete restoration,Stock Pit is now producing a good number of the newer stocked Carpover 20lb and a few of the older residents have been gracing the bankstoo. Banjo Lake continues to thrive and we’re certain the 2013/14 seasonwill see the first 30lb Carp banked since its launch as a Day Ticket fishery.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate tocontact myself or Jamie Godson (Fisheries Officer) on 01992 892291or send reports and photos to LVRPA Fisheries, Holyfield Hall Farm,Stubbins Hall Lane, Waltham Abbey, Essex EN9 2EG. HotspotsFind the gaps in the year-roundweed beds, particularly clearareas, gravel bars and shelves.

TipsTry Drift-Floating a deadbait tocover a larger area whentargeting the pike. The betterfish tend to be caught onledgered dead baits. Wary Carpare easily spooked, a subtleapproach is required. Keep offthe skyline as much as possibleand use bank side vegetationfor cover.

RestrictionsAngling is from dawn to duskonly. ‘Bait’ fishing for Pike is onlyallowed between the 1 Octoberand the 31 March, however theuse of lures is permitted all yearround. Live baits must becaught from the venue. Nightfishing is not allowed and daytickets are not available forthis site. Permit holders mayuse a maximum of three rods.

AshleyTurnford, Hertfordshire

SpeciesPrimarily a Carp fishery, howeverPike, Tench, Rudd and Breamare also present. Since beinglaunched in 2001, Ashley hasbeen stocked with fast growingFishers Pond and PrioryFisheries strain Carp into doublefigures. Many of these fish arenow being caught over the 30lbmark. An additional stocking ofBowyers Water strain CommonCarp were introduced in 2006 tocompliment the stock of MirrorCarp and have been caught todouble figures.

HotspotsWatercraft and fish location isthe key. All of the typical gravelpit features, ie gullies, plateausand bars, etc, should producefish.

TipsThe stocked fish respond well topellets. Beds of these fishedwith good quality boilies overthe top have produced multiplecatches. The water has beenlightly fished in recent years andincreased usage together withpre-baiting should see adramatic increase in fishweights. Fish are often seen inthe margins during the summermonths, therefore adopting astealthy approach and baitingclose in spots can provideexciting action.

RestrictionsThree rods maximum.

SpeciesPrimarily stocked with Carp, plus Rudd, Roach, Perch andTench.

HotspotsThe pit has many underwaterfeatures including bars, plateausand gullies but do not ignore themarginal cover provided bytrees and reed beds on the farbank. The swims on the lake arevery comfortable being formaland constructed to a highstandard.

TipsThe fish have been fed regularlyon pellet since the stocking. Agood quality boilie fished with aPVA bag of pellets, on top of ascattering of pellets and boilieshas proved a winningcombination. In certain areascrayfish are present so air dryingyour hookbaits or using artificialcorn or boilies can work well.Big bags of silver fish can becaught using maggot andwaggler tactics.

RestrictionsThere is a limit of two rods perangler. Being a narrow lake, there are markers indicatingwhich areas you are able to fishto from each swim during busierperiods.

At just over five acres in size this mature gravel pit is aDay Ticket fishery for new Carp anglers or someonewishing to put a bend in their rods. Following remedialfisheries work, this venue has benefitted from a proactivestocking programme whereby there are now well over250 Carp between 2.5lb and 30lb. HotspotsFor Carp find features such asbars, plateaus, holes in weedbeds and gullies. A subtleapproach in the edge scoreswell on Brackens.

TipsThe main lakes are typical gravelpits containing numerousunderwater features; hencelocation is the key to catchingfish. The fishery contains agood head of well known Carpover 30lb and there is anincreasing number of thesespecimens now over 40lbincluding ‘Single Scale’, ‘BabyBasil’, ‘Moonscale’ and ‘ElsFish’ which topped the scales at46lb 10oz in 2011.

HotspotsFor the Carp, find features suchas bars, plateaus, holes in weedbeds and gullies. The Northsection is very under-fished andcould be worth perseveringwith.

TipsFor the Carp, any of the wellknown good quality fishmealboilies work well when fishedover pellet or particle.
