HEALTHY EATING CHOICES Getting fueled back up af-
ter a workout or a big game is important. First, if you haven’t been hydrating during your workout or the game, make sure you replace the fluids lost during activity. Within two hours from ceasing activity you should have a good meal to help facilitate recovery and prepare you for your next workout. If it is going to be two hours or more before you are sitting down to some calories, think about a recovery bar. It is important for your recov-
ery for you to get a good dose
of protein after activity such as meat or beans. This helps the muscles to recover. Antioxi-dants like vitamin C from fresh veggies like broccoli are great to help rid the body of tox-ins. Eating carbohydrates like fresh fruit will help restore gly-cogen levels in the muscles. An ideal ratio of carbohydrates to protein is 4:1, four grams of carbohydrates to one gram of protein. If you are going for the recovery bar, look for the 4:1 ratio. Keep fats to a mini-mum for your recovery meal, so no fried foods and try and
steer clear of pizza. Things like grilled chicken breast and low fat meats like turkey, buffalo, or ostrich are low in fat and taste good. Most importantly, listen to
your body about what you need for recovery after the game. Even consider writing down what you are eating to see what works for you. Keep-ing a food journal and tracking your activity to estimate calo-ries used and calories burned is a good place to start. Prop-er nutrition will help you stay healthy, injury free, and keep
you motivated to train and compete at a high level.

STARTING FROM SCRATCHBARAT ACADEMY BEGINS ITS FIRST SEASON OF VARSITY FOOTBALLOn a warm October after-
noon, the Barat Academy foot-ball team is practicing like any other high school football team in the area. There’s players’ stretching
on the sidelines while oth-ers are busting their tails run-ning wind sprints. Coaches are barking at players to push
themselves to the next level and it seems as if it’s another day in the world of high school football. But that’s not necessarily the
case for the Eagles of Barat Academy. For this is the first season of varsity football in the school’s four-year history. For head coach John Mor-
rison, building a high school football team from scratch has been one the biggest challeng-es in his coaching career. Mor-rison had coached at some of the state’s top football pro-grams with coaching stints at Waynesville, Kearney and Lib-erty High School, before com-ing to Barat, where he teaches
Biology.“It’s been a huge chal-
lenge,” Morrison said. “Every-where I’ve been there’s been a program already in place that already has it’s tradition, so building a program from scratch, like we’re doing here, is really a challenge.”With just 22 players on the

Eagles roster, many players see time on both sides of the ball. That has then led to un-fortunate injuries to several players as Barat is slated to dress just 14 players for their October 23rd game against Principia. “This is our first varsity sea-
son and we’ve faced a lot of adversity,” Morrison said. “We have just 22 players and we’ve had to deal with a lot of injuries. We’re trying to do our best and play competitive football and be able to field enough kids to play a game.”So how hard has this first
season been on the Eagles?Try to imagine losing not one
player to an appendectomy, but two. It’s those types of in-cidents that can challenge any seasoned coach.“This has been the most
challenging year of coach-ing football in my career as a coach,” Mor-rison said. “We lost two kids very early in the season be-cause they had their appendix removed. We’ve just had weird things happen this season.”But it’s not all
doom and gloom for the Ea-gles; one thing that Morrison has seen the Eagles improve on is the team’s cohesiveness as well as their desire to step up their play in order to help out a teammate.“We definitely have come
together as a team as the season progressed,” Morrison said. “The boys care about each other and they go out there and play for each other. They’re definitely a family.”Barat has two seniors on
this season’s roster in running back/cornerback Stiles Jack-son and offensive/defensive left guard Braden Dalaklis. For Jackson, joining the foot-
ball team was not really in his plans. It took some convincing
from Morrison, who encour-aged him to give football a shot and he’s been a key player on the team ever since.“Last year I wasn’t really
thrilled to play because I’m a basketball player,” Jackson said. “But coach Morrison re-ally talked me into playing.”Jackson also noted that it
takes a special kind of person to go to practice every day and then play every Friday night with the understanding that the Eagles might not win a game this season.“Being the first team at
Barat, it’s really hard because we catch a lot of stuff from the soccer players about us not being too good because we haven’t won a game yet,” Jackson said. “But I think that it takes a really strong person to play and know that you very well might not win every game, but you’re out there just play-
ing for fun.”For Dalaklis,
the inaugural season of var-sity football at Barat Academy has been a learning experi-ence not only about the game itself, but also the intangible
factors in football such as dis-cipline and working as a team.“This year we’ve learned a
lot,” Dalaklis said. “We had to learn discipline and respect for each other because you can’t have a team if you don’t have respect and discipline.”The regular season will be
winding down soon for the Ea-gles and while their record may not show success, the coach-ing staff at Barat Academy is proud of this year’s team.“We’re really proud of our
kids,” Morrison said. “Despite all of the adversity that our kids have gone through, they’ve kept their heads up and had a positive attitude and we’re proud of them for that.”
I think that it takes a really strong person to play and know that you very well might not win every game, but you’re out there just playing for fun.”Stiles Jackson, senior
