With today’s fast-paced life, a little green breathing space is essential to all of us. A space where, perhaps, you can watch the clouds go by while clearing out your cluttered mind; a patch of green to refresh the tired eyes, or simply an open space to feel a minute of Zen. This and more is the Instagram-worthy Greenbelt Park.

Surrounded by charming cafes, lovely restaurants and world-class shopping, Greenbelt Park is a refuge in the middle of the concrete jungle. A manicured garden with more than a dozen varieties of plants, curated and maintained with perfection, it’s always a delight to just sit for awhile and soak in some nature love.

This is the first issue of Locale Makati, paying homage to the beautiful, expansive piece of green that is Greenbelt Park. A 2.8 hectare garden brilliantly integrated with the urban sprawl and the cosmopolitan lifestyle, indeed, Greenbelt Park stands out as one of the most gorgeous parks in the whole country.

A beautiful park in the heart of the country’s “Wall Street” -- that’s what all of us have in mind when someone mentions Greenbelt Park. A pocket park that pairs perfectly with your grande frappucino, proving instant respite from the drab concrete structures of Makati.

Being in the country’s financial district and one of Southeast Asia’s most progressive cities, Makati City is one place where cosmopolitan living is 24/7. Malls, cafes, restaurants, offices and more make up this urban jungle. Amidst these painted sceneries though, Makati is not at all suffocating, thanks to the 2.8 hectare garden known as the Greenbelt Park that balances the consumerism and industrialism in this part of the metro. Taking time off to savor a small moment with nature does good for the tired mind -- the zen-like spots here and there, the Japanese-style pond with a lovely army of Koi fishes that seems to vie for your attention, the walkway with trees and bushes in between that insinuate an intimate communion with nature and the sculptures that add variety to the greens -- that is Greenbelt Park.

For the majority of the working class whose religion is Catholic, the dome-shaped chapel, known as the Chapel of Sto. Nino de Paz (or Holy Infant of Peace) is one attraction in the park that should not be missed. Since its inauguration in 1983, the chapel continues to provide solace to hackneyed workers up to this day, and will keep on spiritual comfort to the faithful for generations to come. Mass is held every morning, noon time and after office hours daily. The lush greenery and the beautiful chapel completes this sanctuary and has become a comforting spot in the hustle and bustle of Makati life.

FACTSabout makati city

and6 It is said that Makati City is the selfie capital of the world. Statistics showed that “258 selfies are taken per 100,000 people, on average.”

Wow! Can you just imagine that, perhaps, every nook and cranny of the country’s financial district are being shared with the world?!

It was in 2013 when the local government of Makati first opened the country’s first milk bank that aims to help babies that are deprived of breast milk —the Makati Human Milk Bank. It doesn’t only help Makati residents, but mommies and babies from other cities as well. So, yes, Makati got milk!

The PSE or Philippine Stock Exchange, has two trading floors – one in Makati and in Ortigas. Back then, PSE traders used blackboards and chalk to process the trading transactions. When the transactions are finished, these are erased from the boards, literally!

Santa Ana Cabaret, a twentieth-century nightclub was once publicized as the largest cabaret in the world. It was in business from 1921 until 1970. Famous personalities who once visited this entertainment venue were President Manuel Quezon, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Gov. Gen. Francis Harrison, to name a few. Currently, the Valkyrie nightclub in Taguig is the modern equivalent of the Santa Ana Cabaret.

Barangay Pitogo got its name from the ‘pitogo’ plants that are in abundance in the area before World War II. Pitogo belongs to the Cycas genus, a palm-like plant. See how simple our forefathers in naming a certain place? No fuss and so pragmatic.

THEPHILIPPINES

Is a traveler’s delight – beautiful islands, turquoise blue waters, tall mountains, scenic countrysides, growing mega-cities and most of all, its friendly and happy people. Its geography and topography is a gorgeous combination of rough and rugged beauty, of old and developing areas, of different influences yet still uniquely Filipino. Let us share with you some photos - from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao -- of the picturesque and interesting Philippine Islands.

The famous neo-gothic church in Baguio City that attracts thousands of tourists is the cathedral with a noticeable rose-colored facade called Our Lady of the Atonement Cathedral (or popularly known as Baguio Cathedral). Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the church has been serving the faithful for 82 years now.

One of Cebu’s famous Instagram spots is the two-storey Roman-style temple dedicated to Leah Albino-Adarna, the late wife of the businessman Teodorico Adarna. Constructed atop a hill in Busay, Cebu in 2012, the temple is reminiscent of ancient Rome and offers a sprawling panoramic view of the Queen City of the South.

Rizal Boulevard is one of Dumaguete’s well loved landmarks. A venue for recreation or just for a solitary walk, the boulevard added an austere charm to the capital and the most populous city of Negros Oriental. A nice spot for sunrise or sunset watching, Rizal Boulevard offers a tranquil escape from the hectic life of this booming province.

A true-blue street food eater should not miss the Roxas Street Night Market when in the city of Davao. Here, hoards of different affordable street food are presented to locals and visitors, all for their gastronomic delight! Aside from the food, the Roxas Night Market is also a one-stop shop for thrifty shoppers as varieties of goods are lined up for sale in the stretch of Roxas Avenue.

Mention the name Makati, and most will imagine the central business district and financial core of the Philippines. The city’s population doubles each weekday as people come to work in its skyscrapers and shop in itssprawling malls. But at night, life in Makati extends beyond the central business district out to the neighborhoods.

Barangay Bangkal offers a taste of life on the edge.

On the edge? Yes. Bangkal sits on the edge of Makati, just beside Pasay City. Still, it has the same city services and social benefits that Makati is known for at a fraction of the price. Streets are safe, and the people are friendly.

This is a working-class neighborhood with family homes that span back multiple generations. During late night hours, the barangay closes its perimeter gates turning Bangkal into a fully enclosed community with an entrance and exit at either side. But during the day, it gets busy like any other part of Makati.

BANGKAL

Without a big mall, what could possibly bring visitors to the area?

We walked through Bangkal and counted eight unique things to do in Makati’s eighth most populated neighborhood:

1. Get your windows tinted, tires changed, and body work. Any driver in Manila knows this area by the name of its biggest street:

Evangelista. This is the main artery of Bangkal. It stretches from EDSA to Arnaiz Avenue and is dotted with auto shops. Watch for the guys waving strips of window tint. They will install tint for you on the spot. There are big brand tire vendors and smaller outfits selling mag wheels on many corners. Need body repairs? You can find bumpers, headlights, or an entire front end on Evangelista.

2. Eat European food. Café Lulu is owned by Swiss nationals. It is along Osmeña Highway at the corner of Del Pilar Street. The

restaurant has weekday specials that will fill you up at lunch or dinner time. On Saturdays they have special pricing on their delicious pizzas.

3. Shop for vintage furniture. Thriftshops put Bangkal on the map in recent years. The biggest and busiest vintage furniture shop

is on Evangelista. It’s an everyday bodega sale with multiple vendors. Start there, then make your way to the smaller shops on Garcia, Apolinario, and Hizon Streets before exploring the rest of the area. From doors to desks, they’ve got a mix of everything. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to squeeze between dusty pieces of furniture to find deals. For the biggest selection, visit on a weekday. Many shops close on sundays.

7. Enjoy wellness without the hassle. Healthcare in the Philippines is available in a full spectrum from the basic

government clinic to full-fledged giant private hospitals. You’ll find a happy medium at RG Medical Center. Open from 6 AM to 11 PM, you can consult with a physician, get lab work, get x-rays, and more all under one roof. They even have a pharmacy. Waiting time is short when you arrive early. Pricing is always friendly.

8. Eat Indian food. Rakhi Ka Dhaba is another affordably priced international option that opens in the evening. Located

at the corner of Rodriguez Avenue and Del Pilar Street. Their simple menu pairs a handful of vegetarian and non-vegetarian side dishes alongside homemade chapati bread, paratha bread, or rice. The affordable pricing and casual atmosphere attracts a regular crowd of foreign graduate students from India and Pakistan. The restaurant stays open until the last person leaves, usually around 11 PM.

4. Eat affordable sushi. Kaito Japanese Carinderia is on Apolinario between Gen. Lim and Lacuna streets and offers an intro to carinderia style outdoor

dining in the Philippines. Tuna maki is their most popular dish. Plan your visit between sundown and 11 PM. For a more sosyal air-conditioned experience during the day, try Kaito’s new indoor restaurant just down the street at Apolinario corner Gen. Tinio.

5. Get a haircut. If you are the type to visit the barbershop at least twice a month, you want it done fast, right, and without

breaking the bank. Check out Muy Gwapito barber shop on the corner of Capt. M Reyes and Luna Street. People of all nationalities come from far and wide to get Manila’s best fade style haircut. Ask for Jojo.

6. Eat local burgers. Keeping true to Bangkal’s automotive theme, Burger Garage combines Instagrammable

interiors with fun names for their local burgers. This restaurant has an open front for the semi-outdoor eating experience. Bring your camera and a friend!

interiors with fun names for their local burgers. This restaurant has an open front for the semi-outdoor eating experience. Bring your camera and a friend!
