The next time you’re near the river, look around. Look beyond the natural beauty that exists from the shoreline and take notice of the people and how much they are enjoying being around the water.
A cornerstone of the Grand River Conservation Foundation’s work is showing people the great natural resources right outside their door.
Once people have seen them, it’s not long before they get active – and with 11,000 kilometres of waterways, nearly 75 km of trails and 11 Conservation Areas, there’s a lot to get into!
Our role is to support outdoor facilities and programs that have few or no other sources of funding, but provide a lot of enjoyment to our watershed community. Trails, outdoor education programs, high
quality wildlife habitat and clean water are some of the results of our efforts.
People get into the Grand in many ways. Whether fly fishing near Fergus, enjoying a boat ride at the mouth of the river on Lake Erie, walking the trails or anything in between, enjoying our great outdoor resources is key to the quality of life we enjoy. It is gratifying to see more and more people doing just that.
2013 was a great year to enjoy the special natural places of the Grand River watershed. Please read on to learn more about the people who love them.
Get into the Grand
Each Christmas, Guelph resident Marilyn Murray
asks her grandchildren to select a charity. She makes
a $50 donation to the charity on behalf of each
grandchild. In 2013, she pooled these donations
and sent one bigger contribution to the GRCF’s Give
Grand Campaign to support future trail development
at Guelph Lake. This year-round campaign is an
easy way for individuals to give. Funds are used to
plant trees and develop new trails. When pooled
together, smaller donations add up and really make a
difference in natural areas.
A gift today for tomorrowGive Grand Campaign Marilyn Murray
“Supporting the Foundation and trails is my passion. This year,
instead of many smaller donations, a more substantial donation went
to one place, which makes a real difference. We will all go up and
explore Guelph Lake together when the trails are completed.”

Thousands come from far and wide to paddle
the Grand River each year, a favourite of many
local paddlers including Robert Caldwell. A well-
traveled paddler, Robert holds a special place in
his heart for the Grand. Robert’s fondness for the
river has inspired him to organize a Cambridge-
to-Paris fundraising canoe trip each year. In 2013,
the Macquarie Group Foundation matched
donations made by more than forty trip participants,
raising almost $54,000 for priority environmental
improvement projects of the GRCA.
Getting into the GrandWatershed partnersRobert Caldwell
“Growing up in Galt, the Grand and other southern Ontario rivers is
where my love of paddling began. I am delighted to support the Grand
River Conservation Foundation by organizing this short river
excursion. It is a beautiful river that has a wilderness feel to it, even
though it is close to cities.”

Lloyd Gower left his mark on the Grand River
Conservation Foundation, spending several years
as a Director and member of the planned giving
committee. Lloyd passed away in 2013, but his
support has become a lasting legacy. Lloyd made
a bequest to the GRCF through the planned giving
program, and more, his philanthropy encouraged
his friends to make testamentary donations. In total,
$300,000 was raised in 2013 through bequests,
thanks largely to Lloyd’s involvement. These funds will
support a range of conservation projects for many
years to come.
Leaving a legacyPlanned givingThe estate of Lloyd Gower
“Lloyd enjoyed nature. He loved walking in the woods, hunting,
fishing and sailing. He helped reintroduce turkeys to the area in
the 1980s and encouraged people to give in all ways. He gave to the
GRCF because he believed in it.”

Derek Lippert and JP Bartle are the driving force behind
Quiet Nature Ltd., a landscaping firm based in Ayr. They
enjoy the outdoors and understand that planting trees
along waterways improves their health. Each spring,
the duo paddles the Grand River from top to bottom in
seven days to raise funds for tree planting. This feat is
often grueling and is not a typical recreational paddle.
The landscape changes significantly from the Grand’s
headwaters to the mouth. Unlike the tiny stream at the
source, the scene at the mouth of the Grand is akin to
a coastal village, frequented by larger fishing boats and
recreational boaters.
The Grand River AdventureTrees for the watershedDerek Lippert & JP Bartle
“We want to show off the river and get more people to
understand its importance and what it provides. Raising money for tree planting gets trees in the ground. Also, paddling the river each spring in such a short time
is a personal challenge.”

The close connection between health and fitness is a
strong motivating factor for George and Peggy Sarson.
They organize the annual Run for the Toad, Canada’s
biggest trail race, at Pinehurst Lake Conservation
Area. In 2013, the Sarson’s received a Watershed
Award for their commitment to Pinehurst Lake and to
the race. They enjoy seeing the improvements their
fundraising through Run for the Toad provides the
trails and facilities at the park. The GRCA plans to use
this funding to develop new trails for the benefit of all
visitors to this unique natural area.
Run for the ToadTrails for health and wellnessGeorge and Peggy Sarson
“I think any proactive healthy lifestyle including hiking, walking and running has profound health
benefits to immunity, improved health and disease prevention.
Exercise that is on the trails in nature is the best — it doesn’t get
any better than that.”

The Wellington Catholic District School Board
recognizes how vital it is for students to get away from
their desks and into nature. Don Drone and the WCDSB
are long-time supporters of the outdoor education
programs at Guelph Lake Nature Centre. All children
in Grades 1 through 8 spend one day each year at
the nature centre. The centre also provides programs
for high school students who have their sights set
on careers with an environmental focus. In 2013, the
WCDSB Bishop’s Dinner raised $45,000 toward the cost
of building a new Guelph Lake Nature Centre.
30 years of inspired learningGuelph Lake Nature Centre CampaignDon Drone
“Being outdoors and active is important
to student achievement. Guelph Lake
programs have huge dividends for
students, and in some cases, for the
careers of students as well. We have two
or three generations of students who have
been there. It is part of our culture and
something that we value at a program level
and a political level as well.”

Waterfowl, deer, turkeys and frogs will be moving into
a secluded corner of Conestogo Lake Conservation
Area, thanks to some great partnerships. Manufactured
wetlands that were created 30 years ago and were
no longer functioning have been restored, increasing
biodiversity. New control structures and small dams
allow GRCA staff to ensure that this will remain a
thriving ecosystem for wildlife. Seed funding from the
GRCF prompted a number of additional partners to
contribute to this project. The work transformed this
200 hectare (500 acre) space into a wildlife oasis far
from the hustle and bustle of campers and cottagers.
A refurbished home for wildlifeConestogo Lake Conservation Area Robert Messier
“The work at Conestogo Lake Conservation Area adds good
quality biodiversity to the landscape. Many partners,
from their own individual perspectives, saw this project
as an enhancement. Together they are making this happen.”

donors who made donations
and future commitments
to the Your River, Your Life

conservation partnerships and

next generation is doing to protect our rivers.”
