Design GoalEnabling invalid elderly, to retain their grocery shopping experience by focusing on help with trans-portation of the goods.

Interaction VisionThe interaction should give the warm feeling of taking part in the routines and surprises of the world.

Design Goal & Interaction Viosion

Research goalMain question

How can the design proposed at the end of cycle two be further defined or adjusted in order to reach the design goal and interaction vision?

Sub Questions

1.Understandability and readability2.How do people respond to tip-cards and how can the use of these be optimized?3.Do users feel like the service helps retain their shopping experience and do they like this?4.How do users experience the interaction created through the design?5.How do users experience the use of the design.

MethodsTo answer all of these questions I have conducted several studies, for which I used following methods.

a.Iterative Prototype Testing throughb.Observations, Interviews, Roleplaying c.Expert Consult d.Evaluation study

In this section I will provide an account of how research and design activities influenced each other.

Activity 1 - Design of concept 1.0 This cycle was started by adjusting the design proposed on the end of cycle two according to new design guidelines that followed from the expert consult with Mrs. WIjnmalen.

The guidelines formed on basis of cycle two:

•Better use of contrast to improve readability •Less focus on groceries, instead apply extra activity like drinking coffee •Improve explanation so that individual understandability is improved

On basis of these guidelines a prototype was developed to test a new way of explaining the use of the interaction guidance system (IGS). This model was developed for the IP workshop.(image 1)

Activity 2 - Test of Concept 1.0PurposeTest a new way of explaining how to use the design. Focus of the test is on Interaction, experience and understandability. (Image 2)

Processa. Explain the participant the idea of an elderly person wanting help and using the service.b. Provide participant with the package the user would get. c. Observe how the participant works through and understands the prototyped. Discussion & Feedback (appendix A)

ParticipantFemale Student age 22

EvaluationThe prototype was understood reasonably well. Yet, what has to be taken into account is that the test was done by a design student who will presumably understand these systems more easily. The conclusion is that the design has to be developed further. On the other hand the experience of the way the system was explained was received positively and guides as a feasible basis for further development.

Activity 2 - Design of Concept 2.0On basis of IP workshop development of Booklet around calendar. (Image 3)

Activity 3 - Test of Concept 2.0Purpose & ProcessThe same test was conducted as in activity 2, yet this time with concept 2.0.

ParticipantMale 24 years old. (Not a Design Student)Female / Male 50 years old.

EvaluationThe prototype was understood much better then the last version. Both participants pointed out some malfunctions of the prototype. One of the participants also started giving his opinion on aes-thetic qualities it should have. Allthough this is also a possible targetgroup (voluntaries) not possible to test with elderly yet.

Activity 4 - Response Interest CardTest response on interest card (Image 4) and usability for tip-cards

PurposePurpose is to get an indication what kind of response the interest cards bring about. Focus on inter-action (interest card will be the medium for first interaction)

Processa. explain participant about the projectb. let them imagine they would participate in this voluntary servicec. let them fill in the interest cards

ParticipantUVV gave three categories in which they categorize voluntaries.Students – Working Adults – Retired people There were three participants in each category.

EvaluationI got a nice overview of what possible responses would be. The conclusion however was that it was really quite general and therefore needed further development.

Activity 6 - Consult expert on Concept 3.0Expert Consult

PurposeTo find out how she experiences interacting with elderly while delivering homecare to elderly. Focus on interaction, experience, appearance, aesthetic expression and material.

Processa.Tell about the goal project without telling how it works.b.Give package and see how she understands and anticipates.c.Observe, Interview and Consult (discuss ideas and opinions) (Appendix B)

ParticipantFemale – 23 Works part time at Careyn Homecare service (image 6).

EvaluationThis interview was planned before the development of the model that would be used for the evalua-tion test. Unfortunately the appointment was delayed a lot which meant I could not apply tips in the version for the evaluation test. On the other hand she reacted very positive on the prototype and its potential for the DG and IV and gave some more useful advice.

Activity 7 - Evaluation Test

PurposeTo test how delivering voluntary service by the use of this design answers the DG and IV and also if it delivers a contribution to the participants in his or her perception.

Processa.Tell participant they are participating in a project focusing on voluntary service. b.Let them fill out interest cards (also participated in activity 4)c.Delivered package (Image 7) on day 1 (morning) together with interest cards from activity 3 and stayed with them until they had fully read the package. (Did not give any help but had to make sure the participants would use the package as intended as there would be no more time to repeat the test in case of misunderstanding)d.In the next five days the participants will have had the chance to find something for the tip cards, fill out shopping list and the where to go list. Also, during this time two participants representing the voluntaries will fill out their tip card, which they will fill out for the elderly. e.Returned to participants on day 5 with the tip cards the voluntaries provided for the elderly. After having studied the tip cards I played the role of the voluntary and went through a cycle as intended with this service.f.During this test I experienced interacting myself and observed the participant. g.After the test I conducted a interview and consulted/ discussed possible improvements of the elderly. (Image 8&9)

ParticipantsVoluntaries: Male 36 years old – works as cook Female 22 years old – student

Elderly: Single Male 85 years old – Only leaves house by himself if it is really needed, but rather does not. (Appendix C) Couple 85 & 87 years old – Does go out for small walks but can hardly go out by her self carrying products. (Apendix D)

EvaluationExcept for the fact that due to the ice on the streets the female participant did not want to leave the house, both participants reacted really positive on using voluntary service guided by the design. They especially enjoyed the fun they already had during the week and really used the tip cards a kickstart to start a long and diverse conversation going further then talking about the standard where are you from and what do you do.

Some reactions:It was fun to start looking for something.Nice to get out more and see what’s going on.It is allways nice to hear new stories.People still recognizing me gives me the feeling I still matter socially.

The redesign is much more focused on the unforced experience. The elderly should not feel forcedto fill in all the extra lists about the interests of the volunteer. I think the redesign is really coveringthis but I should still be noticed as a possibility. Right now it is more or less hidden on the back. Thereadability is ok but the introduction sheet contains a lot of text. It might be better to use moresymbols and create more of a step based plan. It feels like it has potential but the way the packageis presented to the elderly and the volunteers is very important. When the package is set up in aspecific order it will be more clear for the users.

INTERVIEW Volunteers

Design GoalEnabling elderly, who experience physical limitations, to retain their grocery shopping experience by focusing on help with transportation of the goods.

Interaction VisionThe interaction should give the warm feeling of taking part in the routines and surprises of the world.

Research question – How do you experience interaction socially with elderly you help?

Main Questions with Cues

What can you tell me about the voluntary work you do?What kind of voluntary work do you do for elderly? – How often? – How many people?

Voluntary service is calles careyn.I am sent to homes in order to help anybody who needs assistance in the household tasks.Young families to elderly.Especially in summer I am almost sent to another place each week.

What are requirements of volunteers?Motivations? – Time?

Well I get paid for it but it sometimes feels like voluntary work.I allways work longer then I get paid for because I can’t leave just like that!I also don’t feel like it. Often people just keep on talking and talking, and need to tell their problems to someone. Sometimes I even have to cut of the conversation as I am supposed to do the household tasks! But it gives me a really good feeling and is fun.

How does the social interaction go?A lot to talk about? – Hard to understand? I don’t really have problems communicating. But I can imagine other do have problems. With women it is easier. Men are more stubbornAlso really depents on people, some are really kind and hospitable, others are rather carefull in how they tread me.Some see me as help, others as social contact.Elderly can be hard to understand.

What do you talk about?Hobbies? – Stories? – other people? – Neighbourhood?About anything. It can be categorized in two parts. Complain (about their physical state or things in society) or just

25

Page 26: get out together - idStudiolab · Discussion & Feedback (appendix A) Participant ... Zo veel mogelijk grote steden in om meegesleeurd te worden door hun energie! Lederhose aan en

Appendix B

talk about anything they encounter from things they experience during the week up to old stories. But as I said men are harder to talk with. Also there is a category that really doesn’t do anything anymore. They don’t read or hardly have friends. So they in particular don’t really have anything to talk about.

What do you experience as obstacles when interacting with the elderly?Physical limitations – as articulation – attention? Finding hard to find stuff to talk about?Well they hear poorly or are very hard to understand. They tend to repeat a lot of stories in different words.

I made an initial design aiming at a voluntary system where voluntaries help elderly to go shopping. The design itself focuses on guiding the social interaction of voluntary and elderly.

Show the idea.¬

What do you think of it?Potential – Message – Does it add anything for you? – What could be things for you, you would be interested in?

THE IDEAI really like the idea. I think especially the women will love it. The group that doesn’t experience a lot will find it harder to fill in things, but they might enjoy getting something of the volunteers to get back in touch with things.

Layout and explanationI think a lot of people will understand, yet I still meet people that amaze me when they don’t understand some-thing. They really need things explained carefully. For example the drawing with the dot’s connected will be to abstract for some people. Try to do everything as literal as possible.Maybe also just add a letter with introduction.Word of mouth will really help!

INTERVIEW v Hoof

Design GoalEnabling elderly, who experience physical limitations, to retain their grocery shopping experience by focusing on help with transportation of themselves and the goods.

Interaction VisionThe interaction should give the warm feeling of taking part in the routines and surprises of the world.

Research question – How are Design goal and Interaction vision experienced by the elderly? And how did the user experience interacting with the booklet?

Main Questions with Cues

Do you feel like the service would add to your weekly program? Getting an extra moment of leaving the house and doing groceries?

What do you think of this purpose? Helping you in getting out doing groceries?Would it help you? Does it enlarge your feeling of zelfstandigheid? Does it add to your zelfredzaamheid?

Like the idea.Allready exsist service here (from the church). But have to pay from a certain point.Nice to go out more often.Who pays the coffee?AH has got free coffee. Can also imagine that when voluntary comes in for a short talk before we go out. When they would then see my shopping list say; mr. van Hoof, we already got you sugar last week. Older people like me tend to forget things!

How do you experience the service and interaction overall?

How did you feel about leaving the house with me?(Try to ask for routines and surprises without mentioning them explicitly)Well it was nice to leave the house with someone else sometimes! I had a nice talk with you, about what I wrote on the cards and about what you took for me about the weaving. Of course the weather was pretty bad, so we wanted to go in and out fast as we could. But I always like going out with young people. Like his I get to talk about different things then usual. My own grandchildren don’t come by that much anymore.

How would you feel when doing this more often? It would be really nice. I would have to plan less what to have in my home. And it is nice to get out more often in an easy way. Of course if it is really necessary I can get out, but it is easier and more reassuring for me to get out when someone joins me.

How did you feel when first reading the hobby cards of the voluntary?Does it inform you enough about the other person? – Does it make you curious? – Does it trigger/ help you?

Seems like a nice girl. Nice to get an impression of who is coming.

How did you like interacting using the tipcards?Did you find them helpful when interacting? – Fun? Nice to have something to talk about straight away. Also like what they brought me.Yet I already knew the man.And someone working in textile whole his life will see something like this in a different way then someone who does not know a lot of weaving. But was nice to see the effort.

What I did myself was also nice. I started looking for things according to the interests and found quite some things. At some point I had to choose what she would like most. In the end I chose for that of which I thought that could be newest to her.Nice activity.Of course it is hard to say if she would like it because she could not be here. But I do think she would not know how one can use this waterpaint. How do you experience the way in which the service is offered and explained?

How did you understand the booklet? Was the layout clear? – Was the type writing etc clear? – Was the message and the use clear?

It looks very professional and clean. And I really liked things as the explanation on the front page.I understood the points but not shure if everybody would. Some words, ore sentences could be chosen differently.

How did you feel about the way the booklet tries to guide the interaction?Does is feel pushy? – Do you see potential in using it?

It explains everything in quite a clear way.No, I didn’t feel it was to pushy because it was explained in an open way.I think I could use this. But I think the question is wetter or not people will get to the service. If a person is alone and isolated, this person might not be the person that comes out to look for a service like this.

How did you use the tipcards?

Explained before.

Would you use it?Potential – Message – Does it add anything for you? – What could be things for you, you would be interested in?

Went well. Because of the weather could not go that far (walker). So wen to the bakery two blocks away and back again. Had a cup of coffee afterwards. Discussed the what we wrote on paper during walk and after. During walk talked a lot about how dangerous the snow was and at the bakery about what I was doing with mr v Hoof.

What do you think of this purpose? Helping you in getting out doing groceries?Would it help you? Does it enlarge your feeling of zelfstandigheid? Does it add to your zelfredzaamheid?

I really like how you get to know eachother like this. In our experience, and we have a lot of experience with vol-untaries, it is not allowed to get a too personal relationship. They do this so that the people helping you stay on a professional level.

Husband:Of course we didn’t get the chance to go out and do groceries right now, although I did make my shopping list! But it is really nice if you would take my wife out to the supermarket. Like this she gets out to get something and I get to be alone for an hour or so.

Wife:Nice to get out more and see what’s going on. I already get help from homecare but they are really here for what needs to be done and nothing extra.

transparency

How do you experience the service and interaction overall?

How did you feel about leaving the house with me?(Try to ask for routines and surprises without mentioning them explicitly)

wife: I can imagine that when we get out I get to greet people again and they greet me. I only get that when I go out with my husband, son or daughter. There used to be neighbors and friends as well, but they have problems themselves now.

29

Page 30: get out together - idStudiolab · Discussion & Feedback (appendix A) Participant ... Zo veel mogelijk grote steden in om meegesleeurd te worden door hun energie! Lederhose aan en

Appendix DPeople still recognizing me gives me the feeling I still matter socially.

How would you feel when doing this more often?Husband:Doing something like this more often would be really nice. Then I could plan something extra on a regular basis.WIfe:For me it is allways nice to hear stories a lot as I can’t read anymore. There are other voluntaries reading newspa-pers to me twice a week. Like this I know what’s going on around me. So to hear different things out of society is nice!Yet I must say you will get in trouble with voluntaries getting to personal with us.

How did you feel when first reading the hobby cards of the voluntary?Does it inform you enough about the other person? – Does it make you curious? – Does it trigger/ help you?Husband:It is nice to learn something about the voluntary before you meet her. It also ads transparency which you some-times miss in the care system. Wife:But I must say I find your idea with the sentences more fun! You could wake me up for my granddaughter. They also tend to shift around a lot between voluntaries so it would help a lot to keep track who is visiting you.

How did you like interacting using the tipcards?Did you find them helpful when interacting? – Fun? It was fun to start looking for something. We had discussions what would be the nicest thing to tell. Besides I like the idea, because I forget a lot so it would help me remembering things.

How do you experience the way in which the service is offered and explained?

How did you understand the booklet? Was the layout clear? – Was the type writing etc clear? – Was the message and the use clear?I could not read it at all because of my sight. My husband understood most of it.

How did you feel about the way the booklet tries to guide the interaction?Does is feel pushy? – Do you see potential in using it? Husband: I really found it explained clear.I really liked the transpernecy in the way everything is explained. It gives a reassuring feeling when you can’t see or read everything.

How did you use the tipcards?Well we hung It in the kitchen and tore a shoppinglist out. The shoppinglist was lying around and we wrote every-thing on it.Also we immediately started looking for something to put in. So that was in there all week as well. It was nice to think of the initiative each time you saw it.

Would you use it?

30

Page 31: get out together - idStudiolab · Discussion & Feedback (appendix A) Participant ... Zo veel mogelijk grote steden in om meegesleeurd te worden door hun energie! Lederhose aan en

Appendix DPotential – Message – Does it add anything for you? – What could be things for you, you would be interested in?

We would use it. Yet my wife is a bit less sociable then me sometimes. She couldn’t use it by herself. Wife: As I said I really like the initiative and some people would need this. I would try to use it. But of course some voluntaries already talk that much that they wouldn’t need this.It is a nice feeling to have something ready to tell and show the voluntary when they come. Yet I wonder what would happen after four times. Then it could become to standard: Hi! Look what I want to show you this time! That could become strange.

Went really well for a part. The part of the tipcard, and the interview went great. The fact that we didn’t get the chance to leave the house was less rewarding. Was nice to see that they really act together and both gain something from this voluntary service.

Went there. Did the interview. And talked through readability. Had a conversation about the tipcards which was nice. Talked about it for about 10 minutes. And it aroused other stories as well.
